American Tower to acquire Telxius Towers for €7.7 billion

Telefónica agreed to sell Telxius Towers to American Tower Corporation for approximately €7.7 billion (approximately $9.4 billion at current foreign exchange rates), subject to customary closing adjustments. 

The deal consists of approximately 31,000 existing communications sites in Germany, Spain, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Argentina. In addition, American Tower expects to spend approximately $500 million to construct a committed pipeline of approximately 3,300 new sites in Germany and Brazil through 2025.

Following this operation, American Tower becomes Telefónica's leading supplier in both Europe and Latin America and maintains its status as a partner in strategic projects in Brazil, Argentina and Colombia.

American Tower expects the assets to generate approximately $775 million in property revenue, approximately $410 million in gross margin, and approximately $390 million in Adjusted EBITDA at current foreign exchange rates, in their first full year in its portfolio, pro forma for contributions from the committed future build-to-suits. This implies an Enterprise Value / Adjusted EBITDA multiple of less than 26x.

T-Mobile US inks multi-billion-dollar deals with Ericsson and Nokia

T-Mobile US has signed new five-year, multi-billion-dollar agreements with both Ericsson and Nokia for the continued expansion of its 5G network.  Financial terms were not disclosed. Both vendors have been long-term suppliers to T-Mobile.

Intel appoints Pat Gelsinger as next CEO

Intel's Board of Directors appointed Pat Gelsinger as the company's new chief executive officer, effective Feb. 15, 2021, replacing Bob Swan.

Gelsinger has served as the CEO of VMware since 2012, where he significantly transformed the company into a recognized global leader in cloud infrastructure, enterprise mobility and cyber security, almost tripling the company’s annual revenues. Prior to joining VMware, Gelsinger was president and chief operating officer of EMC Information Infrastructure Products at EMC, overseeing engineering and operations for information storage, data computing, backup and recovery, RSA security and enterprise solutions. Before joining EMC, he spent 30 years at Intel, becoming the company’s first chief technology officer and driving the creation of key industry technologies such as USB and Wi-Fi. He was the architect of the original 80486 processor, led 14 different microprocessor programs and played key roles in the Core and Xeon families.

NEC to build subsea cable in Palau

The National Submarine Cable Utility Belau Submarine Cable Corporation (BSCC) of the Palau Republic (Palau) has awarded a contract to NEC for the construction of the Palau Cable 2 (PC2) optical submarine cable.

The PC2 cable will have a total length of approximately 110km and connect Palau with another high-capacity cable linking southeast Asia to mainland U.S.  The new cable serves as an addition to the first optical submarine cable laid by NEC in Palau in 2017.

This project is being implemented under a buyer's credit loan agreement by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC)

with BSCC. The loan portion from SMBC is insured by Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI). Additional financing is being provided by the United States Government and the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP).


NEC begins construction of 3 subsea cables in Micronesia

NEC, in partnership with Belau Submarine Cable (BSCC) and the government of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), announced it has commenced construction of three submarine cable links that will connect the islands of Palau, Yap and Chuuk in the western Pacific Ocean to the global network.

BSCC, supported by a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has signed a supply contract with NEC to build the spur to Palau, while FSM, backed by a grant from the World Bank (WB), has signed a supply contract with NEC to construct the spur to Yap, and recently signed an additional agreement for the extension from Pohnpei to Chuuk.

The spurs to Palau and Yap will both interconnect with the SEA-US cable system, also under construction by NEC, which connects the Philippines and Indonesia to the west coast of the U.S. via Guam and Hawaii. In addition, the extension from Pohnpei, the capital of FSM, to Chuuk branches out of another existing cable linking FSM, the Marshall Islands and Guam. All three routes feature transmission speeds of 100 Gbit/s per channel.

BSCC is a state-owned entity of the Republic of Palau with responsibility for the submarine cable project. BSCC has signed an IRU agreement with GTI (a subsidiary of Globe Telecom) for the provision of 5 x 100 Gbit/s wavelengths and a branching unit (BU) on the SEA-US West subsystem linking Indonesia, the Philippines and Guam. It has also contracted NEC to supply a spur cable linking the BU on the SEA-US West subsystem to Palau.

On completion of the project, BSCC will provide open bandwidth access to the international cable system for domestic telcos.

In addition, DTCI has signed an IRU agreement with Telkom Indonesia (Telin) for 5 x 100 Gbit/s wavelengths and a BU on the main trunk of the SEA-US West subsystem, plus a supply contract with NEC to deliver a spur cable linking the BU on the SEA-US West subsystem to Yap, along with a contract extension that includes a cable linking Weno Island Chuuk to the existing spur on to the HANTRU-1 cable system in Pohnpei to Guam.

Ownership and implementation responsibilities for the cable systems will pass from DTCI to the newly established FSM Telecommunications Cable (FSMTCC) which, as owner of the Yap and Chuuk cable systems, will provide open bandwidth access to the international cable systems for domestic telcos.

D-Link introduced a USB-C to 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, enable laptop users to connect with with 2.5X the bandwidth of current Gigabit connections.

India's Lightstorm Telecom Ventures deploys Ciena

 Lightstorm Telecom Ventures (LTV), an independent and carrier-neutral infrastructure provider in India, has deployed Ciena in its metro and long-distance network to support the delivery of low latency and high-capacity digital services. LTV’s network covers more than 10,000 kilometers and 60 data centers in five cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad, as well as strategic subsea cable landing stations providing high-capacity connectivity to Mumbai and Chennai.

LTV is using Ciena’s 6500 packet-optical platform with Layer 0 control plane, WaveLogic 5 Extreme, Waveserver Ai, Manage, Control and Plan (MCP), and Services as well as Blue Planet Multi-Domain Service Orchestration (MDSO).

Consolidated Comm Builds 5G-ready network with Ciena

Consolidated Communications, a top-10 fiber provider in the U.S. with 46,300 fiber route miles, is working with Ciena to upgrade its wireline network to support new and emerging 5G services and applications including new FlexEthernet-based slicing options.


Specifically, Consolidated will leverage Ciena’s Adaptive IP solutions including the 5164, 5166 and 5170 Routers, along with the 8180 Coherent Networking Platform, to provide standards-based IP connectivity and network slicing that is both open and optimized for 5G xHaul connectivity.

Ekinops reports stable revenue trend

Ekinops reported Q4 2020 revenue  €25.3 million, representing a limited decline of 1.0% (compared to €25.6 million in Q4 2019, up 20.7%), and at upper end of the target range. At constant exchange rates, the Group returned to growth in Q4 2020 with a 2% increase in revenue.

Ekinops said business activity remaining solid overall at the end of the year despite the tougher health situation.

Facebook tests trans-Atlantic 700 Gbps wavelength with Infinera's ICE6

 Facebook achieved two significant optical transmission records during recent testing of Infinera's ICE6 optical engine over the MAREA trans-Atlantic cable system:

MAREA hero results over 6,640 km

  • 30 Tbps of total capacity on a single fiber pair
  • 700 Gbps data rate per wavelength
MAREA deployable results over 6,640 km:
  • 28 Tbps of total capacity on a single fiber pair
  • Up to 650 Gbps data rate per wavelength


The hero result is considered maximum performance because it offers no additional deployment margin.

The MAREA cable system, which spans 6,640 km from Bilbao to Virginia Beach, has been used by multiple vendors for testing state-of-the-art equipment and is considered the benchmark for testing because it was specifically optimized for maximum capacity per fiber pair. MAREA uses a low-loss optical fiber type based on a pure silica core. It also features short amplifier spacing of 56 km.

Infinera cited several factors for the record-breaking performance of its ICE6 engine in this trial, including the use of Nyquist subcarriers, the advantage of long code words for probablistic constellation shaping (PC), nonlinear algorithms and mitigation techniques (e.g., super-Gaussian distributions), as well as dynamic bandwidth allocation. 

In a blog post, Steve Grubb, Global Network Optical Architect, states "the higher data rate per wave, the better the cost per bit – and that includes the fact that we need fewer transponders that consume less rack space and less electrical power. The 28 Tb/s option with ICE6 reduces the network element count by 60% vs. the boxes previously required for 24 Tb/s…that’s a huge improvement, especially in cable landing stations where real estate and power are often at a premium."

A team of researchers from Infinera has achieved new benchmarks for efficiency for transatlantic fiber optic cables. By employing 16QAM modulation on the MAREA transatlantic cable, the researchers generated signal speeds topping out at 26.2 terabits per second, a 20 percent increase over what the cable designers originally thought feasible. IDC: Public cloud IT infrastructure revenue growth stays strong

Vendor revenue from sales of IT infrastructure products (server, enterprise storage, and Ethernet switch) for cloud environments, including public and private cloud, increased 9.4% year over year in the third quarter of 2020 (3Q20), according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Cloud IT Infrastructure Tracker. Investments in traditional, non-cloud, IT infrastructure declined -8.3% year over year in 3Q20.

Some highlights:

  • Spending on public cloud IT infrastructure increased 13.1% year over year in 3Q20, reaching $13.3 billion. During the previous quarter spending on public cloud IT infrastructure exceeded non-cloud IT infrastructure spending for the first time ever, but non-cloud IT infrastructure spending was back on top in 3Q20 at $13.7 billion. 
  • IDC expects public cloud IT infrastructure spending to surpass non-cloud IT infrastructure spending again in the near future and expand its lead going forward.
  • Spending on private cloud infrastructure increased 0.6% year over year in 3Q20 to $5.0 billion with on-premises private clouds accounting for 63.2% of this amount.
  • IDC believes the hardware infrastructure market has reached a tipping point and cloud environments will continue to account for an increasingly greater share of overall spending. 
  • Within cloud deployment environments in 2020, compute platforms will remain the largest segment (49.1%) of spending, growing at 2.3% to $36.4 billion while storage platforms will be the fastest growing segment with spending increasing 27.4% to $29.2 billion, and the Ethernet switch segment will grow 4.0% year over year to $8.5 billion.
  • Spending on cloud IT infrastructure increased across most regions in 3Q20, with the highest annual growth rates in Canada (32.8%), China (29.4%), and Latin America (23.4%). Growth in the United States was 4.7%. Japan and Western Europe declined by -6.7% and -3.4%, respectively. In all regions except Canada and Japan, growth in public cloud infrastructure exceeded growth in private cloud IT.
  • Inspur, Huawei, and Lenovo had double-digit year-over-year growth while most other major vendors, including the ODM Direct group of vendors, had single-digit growth. Cisco was the only major vendor with a year-over-year decline.


IDC: PC sales rocket ahead at 26% growth rate

 Due to ongoing work-from-home and school-from-home trends during the pandemic, global sales of traditional PCs (inclusive of desktops, notebooks, and workstations) experienced a 26.1% year over year growth during Q4 2020 to 91.6 million units, according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. The same category of devices grew 13.1% year over year for the full year 2020 with the catalysts being work from home, remote learning, and restored consumer demand.

"Every segment of the supply chain was stretched to its limits as production once again lagged behind demand during the quarter," said Jitesh Ubrani research manager for IDC's Mobile Device Trackers. "Not only were PC makers and ODMs dealing with component and production capacity shortages, but logistics remained an issue as vendors were forced to resort to air freight, upping costs at the expense of reducing delivery times."

Samsung's flagship 5G processor/modem boasts 7.65 Gbps in mmWave

Samsung announced mass production of its flagship Exynos 2100 mobile processor built on an advanced 5nm EUV process technology, which enables 20-percent lower power consumption or 10-percent higher overall performance than its preceding 7nm predecessor. 

The Exynos 2100 chip offers improved cache memory utilization and a stronger scheduler. The octa-core CPU comes in an improved tri-cluster structure made up of a single powerful Arm Cortex-X1 core that runs at up to 2.9GHz, three high-performing Cortex-A78 cores and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores delivering more than 30-percent enhancement in multi-core performance than the predecessor.CThe newly-designed tri-core NPU has architectural enhancements such as minimizing unnecessary operations for high effective utilization and support for feature-map and weight compression. Exynos 2100 can perform up to 26-trillion-operations-per-second (TOPS) with more than twice the power efficiency than the previous generation. 

Samsung's Exynos 2100’s advanced image signal processor (ISP) supports camera resolutions of up to 200-megapixels (Mp). It can connect up to six individual sensors and is able to process four concurrently for richer multi-camera experiences. With a multi-camera and frame processor (MCFP), the ISP can combine feeds from multiple cameras to improve zoom performance, enhance image quality for ultra-wide shots and more. With AI acceleration, the ISP offers a content-aware feature that quickly and seamlessly recognizes scenes, faces and objects and optimally adjusts the camera settings to capture the image with fuller detail.

The Exynos 2100’s integrated 5G modem supports 5G’s sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums from 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA and 4G LTE, for strong network coverage and reliability. DE-CIX says customers at 365 Data Centers in Chicago now have native access to a neutral multi-service interconnection platform, enabling VLAN access for peering, and to reach global carriers, ISPs, content, cloud, and other networks through a single port. Furthermore, transport connectivity available through 365 Data Centers’ interconnected network of data centers enables nearby secondary markets such as Detroit and Indianapolis low latency access to DE-CIX Chicago, enhancing connectivity for the entire Midwest region.

DE-CIX Doubles Its Internet Exchange Footprint in North America

DE-CIX announced two new Internet Exchanges in North America: one now available in Chicago, IL, and one soon to be ready for service in Richmond, VA. The two locations expand upon and interconnect with DE-CIX North America’s existing multi-service interconnection platforms in the New York and Dallas metro markets. 

DE-CIX Chicago is available for service today in 12 facilities throughout the metro market including key carrier hotels 427 S. LaSalle and 350 E. Cermak. The fully redundant and distributed carrier and data center neutral IX and multi-service interconnection fabric of DE-CIX Chicago, launches with more than 10 networks connected day one. O-RAN publishes 3rd software release - Cherry

The O-RAN Software Community (OSC) announced its 3rd open software release within 18 months, dubbed “Cherry”.

The main use cases delivered in Cherry include:

  • Policy based Traffic Steering using the A1 and E2 interfaces
  • Automated Monitoring and Health check of selected components using the O1 interface
  • Configuration, Fault and Performance Management Services aligned with OAM models and specifications newly approved by O-RAN
  • Life Cycle Management Framework of rApps and xApps using SMO
  • O-DU Low and High pairwise testing in O-RAN Software Community lab
  • Simulators for testing and integration, such as E2, A1, Open Test Framework, etc.

Intel leverages silicon photonics for Mobileye's lidar system-on-chip

Mobileye, a division of Intel, unveiled a new silicon photonics processor for frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) lidar. The new device, which was engineered at Intel’s silicon photonics fab in New Mexico, is expected to be in production by 2025. 

Mobileye envisions that AVs will use both radio- and light-based detection-and-ranging sensing.

The new software-defined imaging radar technology with 2304 channels, 100DB dynamic range and 40 DBc side lobe level that together enable the radar to build a sensing state good enough for driving policy supporting autonomous driving. 

“This is really game-changing. And we call this a photonic integrated circuit, PIC. It has 184 vertical lines, and then those vertical lines are moved through optics. Having fabs that are able to do that, that’s very, very rare. So this gives Intel a significant advantage in building these lidars,” stated Mobileye president and chief executive officer Amnon Shashua.

Intel shows bevy of new processors

Intel introduced four new processors families - a total of more than 50 individual processor designs - for laptops and PCs.

At the high-end, the new 11th Gen Intel Core vPro processors feature hardware security to detect and stop ransomware and crypto-mining attacks. It is also equipped with Intel Control Flow Enforcement Technology, ground-breaking technology to help shut down an entire class of attacks that long evaded software-only solutions. This processor line leverages Intel 10-nanometer (nm) SuperFin technology, Intel Iris Xe graphics, and integrated Intel Wi-Fi 6/6E (Gig+).

Additionally, Intel demonstrated “Alder Lake,” the next-generation in x86 architecture and Intel’s most power-scalable system-on-chip.  Alder Lake will combine high-performance cores and high-efficiency cores into a single product. Alder Lake will also be Intel’s first processor built on a new, enhanced version of 10nm SuperFin. Intel expects to ship Alder Lake in the second half of 2021.

Acacia expects Q4 revenue in $160-164 million range

Acacia Communications reported preliminary Q4 2020 revenue in the range of $160.0 million to $164.0 million. The company was expecting GAAP net income to be $31.7 million to $35.4 million, while Non-GAAP net income was expected in the $38.3 million to $42.2 million range. Further details posted online.

In addition, Acacia filed its answer and affirmative defenses in response to the complaint filed by Cisco Systems. The counterclaim against Cisco seeks a declaration that Acacia validly terminated the merger agreement with Cisco because the required Chinese regulatory approval was not obtained and the merger did not close before the agreed-upon termination date under the agreement.
