Deutsche Telekom tests Mavenir's 5G core

Mavenir has tested its containerized 5G Core solution on Deutsche Telekom’s Cloud network infrastructure.

In addition to 3GPP 5G functionality, the collaboration focused on automation, on-boarding, cloud native principles, CI/CD and other non-functional areas such as resiliency, fault tolerance and performance (load and stress tests). Furthermore, together Mavenir and Deutsche Telekom have validated the combo nodes, with its 4G micro services, to validate seamless 5G to 4G handover on a next generation web-scale core.

“The move to 5G is a paradigm shift for our industry. To support 5G use cases and 5G scale and required automation, Mavenir has developed a cloud-native microservices-based 4G-5G combo-core,” said Pardeep Kohli, President, and CEO of Mavenir. “With the use of web-scale technologies, operators are capable of supporting new 5G subscribers and their existing 4G subscribers with the same solution.”

Continuous-Wave Wavelength Division Multiplexing MSA gets underway

A new Continuous-Wave Wavelength Division Multiplexing Multi-Source Agreement (CW-WDM MSA) consortium has been established to define and promote specifications for multi-wavelength advanced integrated optics.

The CW-WDM MSA said it will solely focus on specifying the laser source instead of the full communications link, and is not targeted at any specific application. Such an approach allows developers to fully optimize optics to their customers’ requirements without interoperability constraints while simultaneously creating a large business opportunity for laser source suppliers.

Currently, IEEE and MSA standards specify four WDM interfaces. Emerging advanced integrated optics applications, such as silicon photonics (SiPh) based high-density co-packaged optics, optical computing, and AI, are expected to move to 8, 16, and 32 wavelengths. Standardizing higher wavelength counts is a crucial part of an emerging ecosystem which is enabling a leap in efficiency, cost, and bandwidth scaling compared to current technology. Increasing the number of wavelengths, while staying in the O-band and aligning with ITU and IEEE standards, allows developers and suppliers to leverage their strategic investments in the current generation of optical products to accelerate time to market of next generation products.

Promoter Members of the CW-WDM MSA are Arista Networks, Ayar Labs, CST Global, imec, Intel, Lumentum, Luminous Computing, MACOM, Quintessent, Sumitomo Electric, and II-VI.

In addition, several Observer Members have signed on to be briefed on the development of the standard to enable early technology development based on the new specifications. Observer Members are AMF, Axalume, Broadcom, Coherent Solutions, Furukawa Electric, GlobalFoundries, Keysight Technologies, NeoPhotonics, NVIDIA, Samtec, Scintil Photonics, and Tektronix.

“Laser sources have been the critical building block of fiber optic communications, and standardizing their specifications has been key to the success of telecom and datacom optics,” said Chris Cole, Chair of the CW-WDM MSA. “ITU-T established complete baselines for DWDM and CWDM grids. The IEEE then specified subsets of these grids for high volume data center applications, starting with 40G and 100G Ethernet optics. The CW-WDM MSA will similarly leverage ITU-T and IEEE standards to specify 8, 16 and 32 wavelength grids in O-band for emerging advanced datacom and computing optics. With the definition of multiple grid sets, the MSA will enable developers to choose what is optimum for their application, while allowing laser suppliers to only have to invest in one technology platform.”

Equinix adds $142 million extension to Dallas Infomart

Equinix has expanded its Dallas Infomart Data Center campus with the opening of a new $142 million International Business Exchange (IBX) data center and the launch of its 5G and Edge Proof of Concept Center (POCC).

The new DA11 IBX facility, which is the ninth data center for Equinix in the Dallas metro area, is a four-story, state-of-the-art data center designed for both small- and large-capacity deployments. Initial capacity is 1,975 cabinets with colocation space of approximately 72,000 square feet. Future expansion will take it to more than 3,850 cabinets with colocation space of more than 144,000 square feet.

The Equinix 5G and Edge Proof of Concept Center (POCC) enables Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), cloud platforms, technology vendors and enterprises to directly connect with the largest edge data center platform in order to test, demonstrate and accelerate complex 5G and edge deployment and interoperability scenarios. The Equinix 5G and Edge POCC aims to:

  • Develop 5G and edge architectures that leverage ecosystems already resident at Equinix. 
  • Explore hybrid multicloud interconnectivty scenarios between MNOs, public clouds and private infrastructures. 
  • Develop multiparty business models, partnering strategies and go-to-market motions for the nascent 5G and edge market.

Global Switch starts construction of massive Amsterdam data center

Global Switch kicked off construction on the first stage of a new data centre in Amsterdam.

The 32,000 sq m data centre, Global Switch Amsterdam East, will be built immediately adjacent to the existing Amsterdam West facility located in the Slotervaart/Overtoomseveld district, close to the main Dutch cable infrastructure, the financial district and city centre. Global Switch Amsterdam is the only multi-tenant provider in the city with a dedicated mains supply, and once all stages of the new data centre are complete, the utility power supply capacity will increase by 40MVA, bringing the campus total to 72MVA supplied at 50kV.

In contrast to the recent moratorium on granting new data centre planning consents, importantly Global Switch Amsterdam East is a known project with Gemeente Amsterdam (City of Amsterdam) and is not impacted either by the widely announced ‘building stop’ or affected by power availability across the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam East will incorporate the latest technologies such a flooded room cooling design with hot aisle containment allowing flexible IT rack load deployment. The cooling will be generated using a free-cooling water-based cooling system and will allow the heat to be exported to the local community. The data centre will be targeting an annualised design Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.2 and a BREEAM "Very Good" certification. In addition, as part of Global Switch’s comprehensive Energy Management Programme, customers will be offered 100% green energy.

The company notes that its existing Amsterdam West is a core node not just for the Netherlands, but also for Europe and beyond. It is one of the most connected hubs in the country and currently hosts a multitude of global and national telecommunications and cloud providers, AMS-IX and NL-IX as well as a wide range of internet services providers. With direct fibre connections between the two data centres, customers of Amsterdam East will be able to access this connectivity rich environment and will benefit from a wide choice of cloud and network providers as well as direct access to the global IP backbone. The two data centres will provide a total of four diverse entry points and four interconnected Meet Me Rooms ensuring highly resilient connections.

Western Digital unveils OpenFlex Data24 NVMe-oF Storage Platform

Western Digital unveiled its new OpenFlex Data24 NVMe-oF Storage Platform, a new shared storage JBOF (Just a Bunch of Flash) enclosure that extends the value of NVMe to multiple hosts over a low-latency Ethernet fabric network. The new enclosure leverages the company's new dual-port, performance Ultrastar DC SN840 NVMe SSDs and in-house RapidFlex NVMe-oF controllers.

The new OpenFlex Data24 holds up to 24 hot-swappable Ultrastar DC SN840 NVMe SSDs, providing up to 368TB in a compact 2U form factor. The newly branded RapidFlex RDMA-enabled NVMe-oF controllers allows up to six hosts to be directly attached with 100Gb Ethernet without the need for an external switch. RapidFlex controllers provide sub-500 nanosecond latency for projected platform performance topping 13M IOPS/70GB/s when adding up to six network adapters to the OpenFlex Data24.

VMware offers certification for Network Functions Orchestration and Automation

VMware is expanding its Telco Cloud certification program to enable telco network functions partners to test the interoperability and readiness of their Virtual Network Functions (VNF) and Cloud-Native Network Functions (CNF) with the VMware Telco Cloud platform.

To date, more than 35 partners have received more than 170 certifications. The expanded program will offer two new certifications:

  • VMware Ready for Telco Cloud certifies network functions for deployment and lifecycle operations through VMware Telco Cloud Automation, a multi-cloud orchestration and automation platform. As part of this certification program, VMware collaborates with partners to create an ETSI-Compliant descriptor, as well as workflow, resource, and artifacts for a validated and tested Cloud Service Archive (CSAR). This level requires the partner to complete the VMware Ready for Telco Cloud Infrastructure certification as a pre-requisite.
  • VMware Ready for Telco Cloud Infrastructure, formerly known as VMware Ready for NFV, identifies telco network functions that interoperate with the core infrastructure layers of the VMware Telco Cloud, as referenced by the VMware ETSI-compliant vCloud NFV Reference Architecture. The focus of this certification level is on the virtualized infrastructure manager (VIM) based on VMware Cloud Director and VMware Integrated OpenStack and, shortly, CaaS (Container as a Service): VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid compatibility, as well as the compatibility with the platform’s core components: VMware vSphere for virtualized compute, VMware NSX for virtualized networking and VMware vSAN for virtualized storage. The program is available at no cost to VMware partners. Testing can be completed either in the VMware on-premise certification lab or in the cloud as a self-service model.

VMware said its expanded program enables partners to accelerate the onboarding and deployment of their 5G-ready services on the VMware Telco Cloud platform, thereby reducing communications service providers (CSPs) time to revenue. CSPs benefit from having access to advanced network functions and services, such as 5G Core components, that are ready to be deployed on the VMware Telco Cloud platform.

Iskratel launches XGS-PON OLT blade

Iskratel launched its XGS-PON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) blade for its broadband-access product SI3000 Lumia, which supports multiple access technologies. The blade leverages network processors to operate in a flow-based mode and pave the way for operators to use next-generation, software-defined access solutions.

Fully equipped with XGS-PON blades, Iskratel’s single SI3000 Lumia XGS-PON OLT can serve up to 32,678 users from the same MEC chassis. The new four-port XGS-PON OLT blades in MEC chassis support full wire-speed throughput, as well as split ratio up to 1:512.

Nutanix adds remote management to cloud infrastructure

Nutanix is rolling out new capabilities that will allow IT teams to deploy, upgrade and troubleshoot their cloud infrastructure remotely.

AT&T pays down $5.3 billion in debt ahead of schedule

AT&T announced early repayment of six series of bonds totaling approximately $4.3 billion and prepayment of term loans totaling $1.0 billion. The total principal of these prepayments is approximately $5.3 billion.

AT&T said its goal is to continue improving its credit quality even as it remains committed to paying a dividend to its shareholders and investing in its growth areas — fiber, 5G and HBO Max. For full-year 2020, AT&T expects its dividend payout of free cash flow ratio will be in the 60% range. This gives the company the flexibility to continue to reduce its debt levels during 2020.

U.S. Cellular joins O-RAN

U.S. Cellular has joined the O-RAN Alliance.

U.S. Cellular said open RAN architecture can help accelerate its delivery of advanced 5G capabilities.  The carrier is undertaking a multi-year initiative to deploy 5G across its footprint.

Nokia moves ahead with 5G Cloud RAN commercialization

Nokia confirmed plans to commercially launch a version of its 5G AirScale Cloud RAN solution that is based on vRAN2.0. The open version  will be commercially available this year with general availability expected in 2021.

Open RAN (O-RAN) splits the base station into Radio Unit (RU), Distributed Unit (DU), Radio Access Point (RAP, a combination of RU and DU), Centralized Unit (CU), and O-RAN compliant interfaces between these elements. Nokia's 5G AirScale Cloud RAN also includes the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) concept to take advantage of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) capabilities to optimize the radio and system performance.

Nokia’s first-generation 5G AirScale Cloud RAN based on vRAN1.0, which has a virtualized Central Unit (vCU), has been in commercial operation on a mmWave network in the U.S. since early 2019.

Nokia’s new vRAN2.0 solution introduces a virtualized Distributed Unit (vDU) as well as a Fronthaul Gateway. The result is a fully cloudified and disaggregated 5G base station that provides scalability, low latency, high performance and capacity, as well as several network architecture options, to meet ever-increasing market demands. The solution helps operators to generate revenue from new 5G services as well as to enable flexible end-to-end network slicing, meet IoT requirements and bring the overall benefits of cloud computing to Radio Access Networks (RAN).

The first Nokia 5G AirScale Cloud RAN solution with a vCU in vRAN1.0 configuration was taken into large-scale commercial use in the U.S. in 2019. Since then, Nokia has evolved the solution to vRAN2.0 configuration with a Distributed Unit (DU) running on General Purpose Processor (x86)-based computing with hardware acceleration in Layer 1 (L1).

Vitalpointz becomes part of Juniper - a likely "acqui-hire" for IoT cloud

Juniper Networks has acquired Vitalpointz, a start-up based that specializes in IoT cloud development tools. Terms of the apparent "acqui-hire" have not been disclosed.

Under the deal, Juniper would gain access to Vitalpointz products, technology and associated intellectual property.  THE Vitalpointz Edge Service Platform links to a mobile network's BSS, enabling the operator to provide a seamless IoT service. When a new SIM gets activated, the mobile Core triggers an API to the Vitalpointz cloud IoT platform. The device is then onboarded and provisioned with OTA software updates as needed.Vitalpointz IoT has been available on the Digital Ocean cloud marketplace for trial use. In addition, some of Vitalpointz' IoT technologies (VESPA) are open-sourced
on Github.

Juniper has not commented on how it plans to integrate Vitalpointz. However, Juniper has invested in Stackpath, which offers an edge cloud platform that might be an entry point.

Vitalpointz, which is based in San Ramon, California with operations in Bangalore, was founded by the same team behind Vistapointe, which focused on network monitoring, visibility & analytics. In September 2014, Vistapointe was acquired by Brocade Communications.

Anuta and Juniper partner on network automation

Anuta Networks, a start-up based in Milpitas, California that specializes in network automation, announced a partnership with Juniper Networks.

The Anuta ATOM platform will be integrated into Juniper’s existing network automation portfolio, including Junos Telemetry, Juniper HealthBot and Juniper NorthStar products. The resulting solutions will empower networking teams to rapidly design and provision network services, gain visibility into applications and services flowing through the network and ensure SLA compliance, as well as service assurance for multi-vendor infrastructure. The ATOM platform will be made available through Juniper.

The addition of Anuta ATOM to the Juniper Networks automation portfolio will provide the following added capabilities and benefits:

Russia's GlobalNet upgrades with Ciena's WaveLogic 5 Extreme

GlobalNet, a leading telecommunications company in Russia, recently upgraded its flexible grid network with Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e).

GlobalNet offers connectivity services to communication operators and corporate clients in high-bandwidth sectors, including content delivery, media and storage.

Ciena said GlobalNet achieved industry-leading capacity across all links in its network, including 600Gb/s between Moscow and St. Petersburg and 800Gb/s to interconnect data centers in St. Petersburg. GSA tracks growth of 5G in mmWave spectrum.

Ninety-seven operators in 17 countries/territories hold public licences (many of them regional) enabling operation of 5G networks using mmWave spectrum, according to a new report from GSA.

Some highlights:

  • twenty-two operators are known to be already deploying 5G networks using mmWave spectrum.
  • thirteen countries/territories have announced formal (date-specified) plans for assigning frequencies above 24 GHz between now and end-2021.
  • eighty-four announced 5G devices explicitly support one or more of the 5G spectrum bands above 24 GHz (though note that details of spectrum support are patchy for pre-commercial devices), up from 59 at the end of November 2019. Twenty-seven of those devices are understood to be commercially available.
  • The 24.25–29.5 GHz range covering the overlapping bands n257 (26.5–29.5 GHz), n258 (24.25–27.5 GHz) and n261 (27.5–28.35 GHz) has been the most-licensed/deployed 5G mmWave spectrum range to date.
  • One hundred and twenty-three operators in 42 countries/territories are investing in 5G (in the form of trials, licences, deployments or operational networks) across the 24.25-29.5 GHz spectrum range.
  • Seventy-nine operators are known to have been licensed to deploy 5G in this range.
  • Twenty-one operators are understood to be actively deploying 5G networks using this spectrum.
  • Band n260, covering 37–40 GHz, is also used, with 33 companies in six countries/territories investing in networks using this spectrum. Of those, 32 hold licences (with the majority of those 32 based in the USA and its territories). Three operators in the USA have launched 5G using band n260.

ADTRAN and Plume collaborate on Smart Home solutions

ADTRAN announced a collaboration with Plume to improve, personalize and secure the home network and streamline connectivity within the rapidly developing Smart Home market.

As part of the collaboration, ADTRAN will integrate Plume’s Customer Experience Management Platform via its Mosaic Subscriber Suite, offering ISPs a comprehensive single pane view of their access and smart home network. OpenSync, a key component in delivering Plume’s services, provides an open-source interface between ADTRAN’s Mosaic and the customer CPE, permitting cloud-based applications to access data and management control of the CPE. Nokia selected for Ireland's National Broadband

Nokia has been selected as a primary vendor by National Broadband Ireland (NBI) to deploy a nation-wide FTTH network solution in the Republic of Ireland.

Under the contract, Nokia will provide 100% of the active equipment, including an FTTH network based on next-generation PON technology, an aggregation network, based on its IP routing and optical networking technology and a full performance management solution.

Nokia products included in the projects: Nokia FX OLT, Nokia XGS-PON ONTs, management system and enhanced applications; 7750 Service Router, providing IP edge networking for the cloud era; and 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) to support next-generation DWDM multiservice, multilayer P-OTN transport

The Irish Government’s landmark National Broadband Plan (NBP) has the goal of providing high-speed connectivity to all of Ireland’s population, including 23% of whom currently live in the more rural Intervention Area (IA) where the NBP will be focused. It involves more than 44,000 non-farm businesses, over 54,000 farms and 695 schools.

Mavenir completes RCS interconnections with Telefónica, Vodafone and DT Germany

Mavenir's Mobile Business Messaging Cloud in Europe completed peer-to-peer (P2P) RCS interconnection with the networks of Telefónica, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom Germany.

Mavenir’s Mobile Business Messaging Cloud is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) RCS Business Messaging (RBM) implementation—operated by Mavenir. The cloud solution includes the RCS and IMS Cores, as well as the session border controllers (SBC) and firewalls required for RCS P2P messaging, and the MaaP (Messaging as a Platform) layer to deliver application-to-person (A2P) and person-to-application (P2A) business messaging to users, including chatbot experiences and advanced business messaging services.

Australia's nbn reports shifting data traffic patterns

Australia's nbn reports that data demand on its main wholesale access service continues to peak above pre-COVID-19 levels as more Australians continue to rely on the network for their work, entertainment and education needs.

The figures show peak download throughput (the measure of data flowing through the nbn network) during the busy evening period increased by 20 percent to 13.2 Tbps on the main nbn wholesale service, compared to the last week of February (which nbn measures as its normal pre-COVID-19 baseline).

Peak download throughput during the week beginning Monday, 8 June also increased compared to the pre-COVID-19 baseline during daytime business hours, up 15 percent to 8.9Tbps, and during early evening hours, up 23 percent to 12.1Tbps, on the main nbn™ wholesale service.

The uptick in downstream data demand for the week beginning 8 June coincided with the release of a software update for a popular online multi-player game. Meanwhile, new customers continue to connect to nbn. Nearly 500,000 new customers have signed up to the nbn™ network since the beginning of March, utilising the nbn™ network for their work, education or entertainment needs.

Peak upload throughput on the main nbn™ wholesale service in the evening busy hours for the week beginning 8 June increased by 20 percent to 0.93Tbps, compared to the pre-COVID-19 baseline.
