Australia's nbn reports shifting data traffic patterns

Australia's nbn reports that data demand on its main wholesale access service continues to peak above pre-COVID-19 levels as more Australians continue to rely on the network for their work, entertainment and education needs.

The figures show peak download throughput (the measure of data flowing through the nbn network) during the busy evening period increased by 20 percent to 13.2 Tbps on the main nbn wholesale service, compared to the last week of February (which nbn measures as its normal pre-COVID-19 baseline).

Peak download throughput during the week beginning Monday, 8 June also increased compared to the pre-COVID-19 baseline during daytime business hours, up 15 percent to 8.9Tbps, and during early evening hours, up 23 percent to 12.1Tbps, on the main nbn™ wholesale service.

The uptick in downstream data demand for the week beginning 8 June coincided with the release of a software update for a popular online multi-player game. Meanwhile, new customers continue to connect to nbn. Nearly 500,000 new customers have signed up to the nbn™ network since the beginning of March, utilising the nbn™ network for their work, education or entertainment needs.

Peak upload throughput on the main nbn™ wholesale service in the evening busy hours for the week beginning 8 June increased by 20 percent to 0.93Tbps, compared to the pre-COVID-19 baseline.

TOYOTA to build private 5G network with Nokia

TOYOTA Production Engineering Corporation (TPEC) will deploy an industrial-grade private wireless network at its manufacturing design center in Fukuoka, Japan.

Nokia and local systems integrator NS Solutions (NSSOL) have been selected for the project.

Initially, a private LTE/4.9G network will be deployed at TPEC’s site supporting a range of IoT-based devices that enable equipment digitization and visualization. Over time, the network will be upgraded to 5G, featuring ultra-low latency to support even faster throughput.

Nokia will provide Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC), an industrial-grade global digital automation service platform that provides a reliable, secure, and high-performance private wireless network, which is scalable according to needs. A compact, plug-and-play system, it includes 4.9G/5G network equipment (core network, base station) and a cloud-based operation monitoring system.

ARM-powered Fugaku supercomputer is No.1 on the TOP500 list

The Fugaku supercomputer, a system jointly developed by RIKEN and Fujitsu Limited, and based on Arm technology, now holds the number one spot of the TOP500 list of supercomputers.

The Fugaku supercomputer, which is located at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science, is the flagship system designed to support a number of applications that will address both social and scientific issues as Japan works to achieve the nation's “Society 5.0” vision.

Fugaku achieved a LINPACK score of 415.53 petaflops, a much higher score than the 148.6 petaflops of its nearest competitor, Summit in the United States, using 152,064 of its eventual 158,976 nodes.

NTT Ltd. appoints Simon Walsh as CEO for the Americas

NTT Ltd. appointed Simon Walsh as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for its Americas business. Walsh will report to NTT Ltd. Global CEO, Jason Goodall.

Based in New York City, Walsh is responsible for managing the end-to-end go-to-market, sales, delivery, operations and profitability for the region. This comprises 4,800 employees in six countries across North and South America with combined revenues of over $2 billion. Walsh joined NTT Ltd. from Atos, where he served as CEO for North America. Prior to Atos, Walsh was Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Virtustream, Dell Technologies’ global cloud business, where he led its global expansion. Before Virtustream, he was Senior Vice President and COO for EMC across Europe, Middle East and Africa.

ServiceNow to acquire Sweagle for config management

ServiceNow agreed to acquire Sweagle, a Belgium-based configuration data management company. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Sweagle, which was founded in 2017 by CEO Mark Verstockt and CTO Benny Van de Sompele, provides a single source of truth for configuration data that is otherwise spread across many tools. With Sweagle, ServiceNow customers can identify and intercept application and infrastructure inconsistencies during agile development cycles.

ServiceNow said the acquisition will will extend itss DevOps and IT Operations Management (ITOM) capabilities, giving customers the ability to leverage machine learning to identify and help prevent potential misconfigurations from causing outages in production and speeding up remediation.

“With capabilities for configuration data management from Sweagle, we will empower DevOps teams to deliver application and infrastructure changes more rapidly while reducing risk,” said RJ Jainendra, vice president and general manager of DevOps and IT Business Management at ServiceNow. “Sweagle also brings deep DevOps talent to ServiceNow. Both founders are pioneers in configuration data management, and we are honored to have this talent join our team as we continue to help customers compete and win in a digital economy.”

Telia reshuffles management team

Telia announced the following changes to its Group Executive Management team: 


  • Markus Messerer will be appointed SVP, Chief of Strategy, Innovation & Head of Global Business. Markus is currently the CEO of Alltron AG, Swiss IT group Competec's B2B business, and brings experience in digital transformation and ICT. Before Competec he was Head of Corporate Strategy at Swisscom. Markus is an Austrian national.
  • Rachel Samrén will be appointed SVP, Chief External Affairs, Governance & Trust Officer. Rachel is today EVP, Chief External Affairs Officer and Member of the Group Executive Team of Millicom. She joins the company with significant experience in external affairs and risk management. Prior to Millicom she served as Director, Head of Business Intelligence, at The Risk Advisory Group. Rachel is a Swedish national.
  • Dan Strömberg will step up and take over as SVP, Head of LED (Lithuania, Estonia and Denmark), while continuing also in his present role as CEO for Telia Lithuania. Dan has held various senior manager positions in Telia Company since the late 1990s.
  • Ingrid Stenmark SVP, Head of CEO Office, Åsa Jamal SVP, Head of Group Communications and Emil Nilsson SVP, Head of LED, will leave the company. 
  • Peter Borsos, SVP, Head of Telia Global, will continue in his present role and will also oversee Group Communications until the new organization is implemented and Markus Messerer and Rachel Samrén have started in their respective roles. Peter Borsos will step down and leave the company during the fourth quarter of 2020.

Fujitsu develops Multi-Domain Optical Network Services within ONAP

Fujitsu Network Communications announced the first implementation of Multi-Domain Optical Network Services (MDONS) within the Open Networking Automation Platform (ONAP) Frankfurt Release.

Fujitsu’s open-source contribution, which was developed in collaboration with The Linux Foundation, Orange and other global service providers, extends ONAP orchestration into the optical space, allowing network operators to design, orchestrate and automate Optical Transport Network services across service provider networks.

The MDONS blueprint leverages Open ROADM, ONF Transport API (TAPI), and MEF standards to enable multi-vendor and multiple domain operation. Open APIs to SDN Controllers deliver multi-vendor service activation and provisioning. The newly added ONAP optical services capabilities will allow for the development of enhanced service offerings and applications customized to the needs of service providers, further driving network automation at the optical layer.


“In the past, service providers relied on a complex negotiation of manual processes for even the most basic inter-connections between network domains,” said Rod Naphan, head of the technology business unit at Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. “By leveraging ONAP and open APIs, our customers can now automatically orchestrate and provision optical services across multiple domains, resulting in faster service turn up and reduced operating expenses.”

All-Virtual 2020 OSA Advanced Photonics Congress Plenary 13 – 16 July

Advances in quantum information processing technologies and nonlinear integrated circuits, implementation of quantum photonics, and new opportunities with nanophotonics will be presented by leaders in the field at the all-virtual 2020 OSA Advanced Photonics Congress 13 – 16 July 2020.

The congress, originally planned as an in-person event, has been transitioned to an all-virtual, web conference format to ensure registrants have access to the high-quality, peer-reviewed technical program. Technical sessions will be presented live from the Eastern Daylight Time Zone (EDT). The Advanced Photonics Congress plenaries are scheduled for Monday, 13 July and Wednesday, 15 July.

Plenary speaker Ian Walmsley, Provost of Imperial College London, UK and 2018 OSA President, will explain how new quantum light sources, operational circuits, photodetectors and quantum memories are driving progress towards building a resilient, scalable photonic quantum network. The talk titled “Advanced Photonics for Quantum Technologies” will explore the promise of hybrid light-matter networks in delivering these technologies.

“From Inverse Design to Implementation of Practical (quantum) Photonics” is the focus of the plenary talk by Jelena Vuckovic, professor, Stanford University, USA. She will describe how combining state of the art optimization and machine learning techniques with high speed electromagnetic solvers offers a new approach to “inverse” design and implementation of classical and quantum photonic circuits with superior properties.

In his plenary address titled “New Physics from Photonic Systems,” Marin Soljacic, professor of physics at MIT, will discuss how the laws of physics can be tailored almost at will to mold the flow of light with nanophotonics and implement novel material-systems.

Ben Eggleton, director of the University of Sydney Nano Institute (Sydney Nano), will highlight “New Frontiers in Nonlinear Integrated Circuits” in his plenary talk. Ekinops supplies 400G optical transport for TurkNet

TurkNet, Turkey's leading gigabit internet service provider (ISP), has chosen Ekinops' FlexRate optical transport solutions to significantly upgrade its core network, which provides businesses and individuals with uncapped high-speed broadband services across the country's key cities. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The first deployment of the Ekinops 400G equipment solution for TurkNet was managed successfully in April of this year in Istanbul, where traffic loads on the metropolitan network are both acute and increasing continuously. Further points of presence will be installed later in 2020 as TurkNet continues to upgrade its core network in major Turkish cities.

Ekinops confirmed that its 400G DWDM equipment is being deployed  across TurkNet's core transport network. The deployment uses the Ekinops PM 400FRS04-SF, a pluggable FlexRate multireach muxponder to meet stringent technical requirements delivering redundant dual and diverse link connectivity at 400 Gbps.

"Turkey's communications infrastructure has evolved rapidly in recent years and TurkNet has set the standard in high-speed broadband," adds Frank Dedobbeleer, VP Group Sales EMEA & APAC, at Ekinops. India looks to limit Huawei and ZTE in infrastructure

Amid ongoing border tensions, the government of India is likely to restrict the role of Chinese vendors, specifically Huawei and ZTE, in future infrastructure projects.

The Economic Times (ET) reported that the government will restrict a tender by state-owned BSNL to expand its 4G footprint to exclude Huawei and ZTE. Furthermore, Jio is said to be making progress with home-grown 5G technology and would also likely exclude Chinese vendors going forward.

Nokia demos 5G C-Band network in Texas

Nokia completed a series of Over-the-Air (OTA) 5G NR (new radio) trials in C-band spectrum, in Dallas, Texas, achieving peak throughput speeds of over 1 Gbps.

The demonstration used Nokia’s AirScale 5G base station equipment in 100 MHz of spectrum at 3.75 GHz with a 4x4 MIMO and configuration in Non-Standalone (NSA) mode combined with Nokia’s Core network. During drive testing, Nokia monitored network performance and demonstrated that the handovers successfully happened between C-Band base stations as expected. The connection and performance was stable throughout the entire test, highlighting the robustness of the solution and its readiness for commercial implementation.

Nokia says its C-Band solution is ready for commercial deployment and notes that the  U.S. will hold a spectrum auction for the C-band in December with network deployments expected in the first half of 2021.

Nokia is also offering U.S. Carriers the option of deploying C-Band with its 5G AirScale Cloud RAN solution in vRAN2.0 configuration, in which the whole baseband will be in Cloud connected to the radio via an ORAN compliant eCPRI 7.2x interface.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, commented: “The mobile industry is dependent on the allocation of new spectrum to increase capacity and deliver enhanced mobile broadband services. This test, in the C-band, is significant because it proves that we have a solution ready-to-go following the completion of the spectrum auctions in the U.S. later this year. LightCounting: Optical tranceiver market down 12% in Q1 due to COVID

First quarter 2020 revenues of optical transceiver and component vendors declined 12% sequentially, after reaching a new high in Q4 2019, due to the global pandemic, according to a new report from LightCounting. The report finds that companies located in China were more heavily impacted in Q1 because of the complete shutdown of factories and construction in many parts of that country. Alibaba for example spent considerably less than in Q1 2019, simply because planned construction could not proceed and equipment was in short supply.

LightCounting also finds that Huawei lost some share in 100G port shipments, while d Accelink and HG Genuine, located in Wuhan, saw revenues plummet by 30-50% sequentially.

LightCounting said it remains confident that ICP spending will continue to be a strong driver of growth in the optical transceiver market. The most recent data shows that cloud revenues of the hyper-scalers continue to grow faster than other business segments, and operate at higher profit margins – ICPs would be extremely foolish to starve their cash cows of needed infrastructure.

IDC: Worldwide converged systems market grows 4.5%

The worldwide converged systems market revenue increased 4.5% year over year to $3.9 billion during the first quarter of 2020 (1Q20), according to a new report from IDC.

IDC's converged systems market view offers three segments: certified reference systems & integrated infrastructure, integrated platforms, and hyperconverged systems.

  • The certified reference systems & integrated infrastructure market generated just over $1.4 billion in revenue during the first quarter, which represents growth of 4.4% year over year and accounts for 36.8% of all converged systems revenue. 
  • Integrated platforms sales declined 8.7% year over year in 1Q20, generating $478 million worth of revenue. This amounted to 12.3% of the total converged systems market revenue. 
  • Sales of hyperconverged systems grew 8.3% year over year during the first quarter of 2020, generating just under $2.0 billion worth of revenue. This amounted to 50.9% of the total converged systems market.

As it relates to the branded view of the hyperconverged systems market, Dell Technologies was the largest supplier with $666.3 million in revenue and a 33.6% share. Nutanix generated $260.0 million in branded hardware revenue, representing 13.1% of the total HCI market during the quarter. Hewlett Packard Enterprise finished the quarter in the number 3 spot with $118.7 million in revenue, which amounted to a 6.0% share.


Intelsat files C-band spectrum transition plan with FCC

Intelsat filed its C-band spectrum transition plan with the FCC, detailing how it will:

  • Migrate 80-plus broadcast, cable, radio, religious and government customers to the upper 200 megahertz (MHz) of the C-band, including the corresponding changes required at 3,500 cable head-ends and 13,500 affiliate earth stations
  • Install 60,000 5G signal-blocking filters across the U.S. in order to mitigate post-transition interference
  • Consolidate multiple telemetry, tracking and control (TT&C)/Gateway antennas into two locations on the East and West Coasts of the U.S.
  • Contract with U.S.-based companies USSI Global, WESCO, ATCi and Convergent to perform aspects of the transition and installation work required on the ground at thousands of earth stations and cable television head-ends throughout the U.S.
  • Intelsat and other satellite operators participating in the FCC’s accelerated C-band clearing plan are responsible for incurring the upfront costs associated with clearing 300 MHz of the spectrum and moving their existing services to the upper portion of the band. Intelsat estimates these upfront investments will cost the company $1.6 to $1.7 billion.

In addition to receiving reimbursement for reasonable upfront costs associated with clearing the spectrum and transitioning incumbent services to the upper portion of the band, Intelsat said it is eligible to receive up to $4.87 billion in incentive payments for successfully meeting the Commission’s accelerated deadlines of clearing 120 MHz of spectrum (3.7 to 3.82 GHz) by December 5, 2021, and the remaining 180 MHz (3.82 to 4.0 GHz) by December 5, 2023. Reimbursements will be funded by the winning bidders of the FCC’s public C-band auction, in line with the FCC’s emerging technologies framework.

“Intelsat is filing its comprehensive transition plan after having spent more than two years proactively working with the FCC, our customers, industry stakeholders, vendors and other satellite operators to create a clear path for meeting the FCC’s accelerated clearing deadlines and ensuring the U.S. maintains its leadership in 5G,” said Intelsat Chief Services Officer Mike DeMarco. “With our detailed plan finalized and our supply chain engaged, Intelsat looks forward to supporting the FCC in successfully transitioning the C-band spectrum and accelerating America’s path to 5G – all while safeguarding the high-quality media broadcast services on which more than 100 million American households rely.”

  • Last week, Intelsat announced that it has selected U.S. manufacturers, Maxar Technologies and Northrop Grumman, to design and manufacture satellites required to transition the company’s high-quality media distribution and contribution services – uninterrupted – from the 3.7 to 4.0 gigahertz (GHz) portion of the C-band to the 4.0 to 4.2 GHz portion of the band.

Comcast extends free public WiF for the rest of 2020

Comcast will extend free access to its 1.5 million public Xfinity WiFi hotspots to everyone through the end of 2020.

ONAP’s Frankfurt brings 5G slicing, Multi-Domain Optical Service

LF Networking (LFN) announced the availability of ONAP Frankfurt, the sixth major release of the open network automation platform for orchestration, management, and automation of network and edge computing services for network operators, cloud providers, and enterprises.

Key capabilities in the Frankfurt release include advances in 5G network slicing, integration with O-RAN, orchestration and management of multi-cloud cloud native network functions (CNFs), and cloud native applications across multiple Kubernetes clouds.  Frankfurt also introduces new functionality and makes considerable advances in S3P (stability, security, scalability, performance), and deeper alignment with Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs). Additionally, the release coincides with continued commercial activity and deployments to production across the industry via a vibrant technical community with participation from 34 organizations and 400+ developers.

The Frankfurt release also brings a blueprint for Multi-Domain Optical Network Service (MDONS) for L0/L1 optical service automation.

“It is during the most challenging of times that the ONAP Community shows its true strength,” said Catherine Lefevre, AVP-Network Cloud and SDN Platform Integration, AT&T and chair of ONAP Technical Steering Committee. “I am continually impressed by the amazing work we put forth every day and how we are making a difference across the Industry. Release Highlights:

  • 5G support — Frankfurt includes support for end-to-end 5G service orchestration and network slicing, greater alignment with the O-RAN specification, and other enhancements.  Developed in collaboration with SDOs such as 3GPP (see more details below), this feature positions ONAP as a comprehensive, vendor agnostic platform for 5G automation. 
  • Standards harmonization — Frankfurt advances alignment with ETSI vis-a-vis SOL002, SOL003, SOL004, SOL005 specifications; 3GPP in the areas of network slicing, fault/performance/configuration management; TM Forum on additional northbound APIs; and O-RAN software community in terms of the O1 interface. These harmonization efforts mean greater deployment readiness.
  • Commercial deployments are easier — Frankfurt brings better deployment readiness through major improvements in the continuous integration (CI) process, bringing stability, speed of innovation, and security:
  • CI — Frankfurt introduces the capability to run automated testing in response to new patch submissions. Since January, the patch submission process has resulted in ~4,000 ONAP installations and ~70,000 automated test suites. In addition, the integration team has defined five test categories, test APIs, and a test database. 
  • Security — Almost every ONAP project made progress on key security issues such as converting ports to https, removal of hard coded passwords, running K8s pods with non-root privileges, and reducing security vulnerabilities (CVE)s. Numerous open source dependencies were upgraded, such as Java 8 to Java 11. 
  • Cloud native deployments are easier — Significant security and flexibility improvements made to the OOM project include security enhancements and the ability for ONAP to be deployed in any Kubernetes-as-a-Service (KaaS) environment, thus increasing the move towards cloud.
  • Major new functionality — Frankfurt supports self service control loops that allows designers to completely define new control loops without having to wait for an official ONAP release;  Controller Design Studio (CDS) integrated to control loops; Configuration & Persistency Service supports saving 5G/O-RAN configuration data. This release also includes a new use case blueprints: Multi-Domain Optical Network Service (MDONS) for L0/L1 optical service automation and enhanced blueprints for 5G and CCVPN.

The next ONAP release, ‘Guilin,’ is planned for 2H of 2020 and will further increase the support for 5G in areas of network slicing and O-RAN integration, ETSI (e.g. SOL007) and 3GPP standards, as well as the cloud native journey including deeper integration with K8s. The release after Guilin is codenamed Honolulu.

Key capabilities in the Frankfurt release include advances in 5G network slicing, integration with O-RAN, orchestration and management of multi-cloud cloud native network functions (CNFs), and cloud native applications across multiple Kubernetes clouds.  The Frankfurt release also brings a blueprint for Multi-Domain Optical Network Service (MDONS) for L0/L1 optical service automation.




Australia hit by sophisticated cyber attack from state actor

The Australian federal government advised of a sophisticated cyber attack targeting Australian organisations across a range of sectors, including all levels of government, industry, political organisations, education, health, essential service providers, and operators of other critical infrastructure.

The Prime Minister's office said it is convinced that a state-based cyber actor is involved because of the scale and nature of the targeting and the tradecraft used.

The attack leverages a number of initial access vectors, with the most prevalent being the exploitation of public-facing infrastructure — primarily through the use of remote code execution vulnerability in unpatched versions of Telerik UI.

NeoPhotonics demos 90 km 400ZR in 75 GHz DWDM channels

NeoPhotonics has demonstrated transmission of 400Gbps data over data center interconnect (DCI) ZR distances in a 75 GHz spaced Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) channel.

NeoPhotonics said its demonstration achieved two milestones using its interoperable pluggable 400ZR coherent modules and its specially designed athermal arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexers (MUX) and de-multiplexers (DMUX).

  • First, data rate per channel increases from today’s non-interoperable 100Gbps direct-detect transceivers to 400Gbps interoperable coherent 400ZR modules. 
  • Second, the current DWDM infrastructure can be increased from 32 channels of 100 GHz-spaced DWDM signals to 64 channels of 75 GHz-spaced DWDM signals. The total DCI fiber capacity can thus be increased from 3.2 Tb/s (100Gb/s/ch. x 32 ch.) to 25.6 Tb/s (400Gb/s/ch. x 64 ch.), which is a total capacity increase of 800 percent.

NeoPhotonics technology overcomes multiple challenges to transporting 400ZR signals in 75 GHz-spaced DWDM channels. The 400ZR signal utilizes an approximately 60 Gbaud symbol rate and 16 QAM modulation, resulting in a broader transmitting signal spectrum compared to that of a standard 100 Gb/s coherent or PAM4 signals. Furthermore, it is recognized that the center frequencies of the lasers, MUX and DMUX will all drift due to temperature changes and aging. Consequently, as the channel spacing is reduced from 100GHz to 75GHz, adjacent channel interference (ACI) becomes more critical, and can potentially degrade the optical signal-to-noise ratio of 400ZR signals.

The filters used in NeoPhotonics MUX and DMUX units are designed to limit ACI while at the same time having a stable center frequency against extreme temperatures and aging. The optical signal spectrum of the pluggable 400ZR transmitter is very important for two reasons. First, the spectrum should not be too wide, as that would result in “spillover energy” impacting its neighbor DWDM channels. Second, it also cannot be too narrow, as that would degrade the signal quality or even recoverability, especially after the MUX and DMUX filtering.

NeoPhotonics has demonstrated end-to-end 90km DCI links using three in-house 400ZR pluggable transceivers with their tunable laser frequencies tuned to 75GHz spaced channels, and a pair of passive 75GHz-spaced DWDM MUX and DMUX modules designed specifically for this application. The optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty due to the presence of the MUX and DMUX and the worst-case frequency drifts of the lasers, as well as the MUX and DMUX filters, is less than 1dB. The worst-case component frequency drifts were applied to emulate the operating conditions for aging and extreme temperatures.

“The combination of compact 400ZR silicon photonics-based pluggable coherent transceiver modules with specially designed 75 GHz channel spaced multiplexers and de-multiplexers can greatly increase the bandwidth capacity of optical fibers in a DCI application and consequently greatly decrease the cost per bit,” said Tim Jenks, Chairman and CEO of NeoPhotonics. “These 400ZR coherent techniques pack 400Gbps of data into a 75 GHz wide spectral channel, placing stringent requirements on the multiplexers and de-multiplexers. We are uniquely able to meet these requirements because we do both design and fabrication of planar lightwave circuits and we have 20 years of experience addressing the most challenging MUX/DMUX applications,” concluded Mr. Jenks.
