Arista's 7800R switches deliver 400G scalability for cloud networks

Arista Networks introduced its new 7800R3 Series switches boasting 36 400G ports per line card, a 4X increase compared to prior modular systems, to address the largest cloud data center routing requirements.

The rollout includes the new Arista 7800R family for 400G cloud networks and the next generation of the Arista 7500R, 7280R Series. All R3-Series feature the proven VoQ deep buffer architecture, with support for 400G, increased route scale and new telemetry functions.

The 7800R3 Series is initially available in 4 and 8 slot modular chassis, with up to 576 ports of 400G or 460Tbps of capacity for the largest scale environments, with a choice of both 100G and 400G modules with optional MACsec for secure interconnect across data centers. The 7800R Series support Segment Routing, MLAG, ECMP, EVPN and VXLAN technologies.

Samsung charts progress from 10nm to 3mm Gate-All-Around

Samsung Electronics is making rapid progress in 3nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) process technology, which could see first tape out in 2021 and mass market production as early as 2022.

Compared to 7nm technology, Samsung’s 3GAE process aims to deliver a 45% reduction in chip area with 50% percent lower power consumption, and 35% higher performance, potentially benefiting applications as diverse as mobile, network, automotive, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and IoT.   Samsung's GAA MBCFET (Multi-Bridge-Channel FET) uses a nanosheet architecture, enabling greater current per stack. WhileFinFET structures must modulate the number of fins in a discrete way, MBCFET™provides greater design flexibility by controlling the nanosheet width.

At Samsung Foundry Forum event in Santa Clara California, company executives outlined the fabrication roadmap from today's 10nm down to 3nm. Some highlights:
  • 14/10nm - these are in high volume manufacturing. These will remain long-lasting technologies into the future
  • 8nm - the most advanced non-EUV technology
  • 7nm FinFET - currently under mass production for mobile applications. The first tape out was in 2018. IP re-use is supported.
  • 6nm FinFET -- mass production of 6nm process devices in the second half of 2019
  • 5nm FinFET - the product design of Samsung’s 5nm FinFET process, which was developed in April, is expected to be completed in the second half of this year and go under mass production in the first half of 2020
  • 4nm FinFET - will represent the maximum scaling of the 7nm family, and development will be completed later this year - 
  • 3nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) process development is on track and will leverage MBCFET (Multi-Bridge-Channel FET) based on nanosheet technology. A Process Design Kit (PDK) version 0.1 for 3GAE was released in April. This will be the future beyond FinFET.

Vodafone UK to launch 5G on 3 July 2019

Vodafone announced plans to activate its commercial 5G network for both consumers and business customers in seven cities across the UK on 3 July 2019. Launch cities are Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London.

Vodafone's 5G pricing will be the same as 4G for both consumers and business customers.

Vodafone expects to launch 5G roaming in the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain over the summer.
Vodafone UK CEO Nick Jeffery said: “We started our 5G journey more than three years ago. We led the way in setting 5G standards to ensure phones and networks work well together. We upgraded our masts to be able to take 5G without disruption. And we were the first UK company to test 5G over our all-fibre core fixed and mobile network.


UK operators: Huawei ban would bring heavy cost



A restriction placed on Huawei in the telecom supply chain could delay a full 5G launch by between 18 and 24 months and cost the UK economy between £4.5bn and £6.8bn, according to a study published by Mobile UK, which is the trade association for the UK’s mobile network operators -  EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Huawei hosts partner summit in London

Huawei is willing to sign a "no spying" agreement with the government of the UK to appease critics as major carriers continue their 5G rollouts.

Speaking at the Huawei UK Partner Summit 2019 in London, Dr. Liang Hua, Chairman of Huawei Board, said his company is increasing its investments in the nation, including opening a new training centre in Birmingham to train engineers on the use of 5G technology and solutions. The centre will have the capacity to train more than 500 engineers a year and is due to open in June.

"We are in a leading position for 5G. We participated in the UK government's 5G trials and are ready to support our customers' commercial 5G launches in the UK. We are supporting the national rollout of Fibre-To-The-Premises (FTTP) technology in the country. We also have competitive and innovative solutions for connecting hard-to-reach areas," stated Dr. Liang.

SiTime ships MEMS Super-TCXOs for 5G radio synchronization

SiTime announced volume production of its Elite Platform of temperature-compensated oscillators (TCXOs) that provide high stability and dynamic performance at 105°C for IEEE 1588-based synchronization in 5G/4G+ radios and enable wireless service providers to begin their network overhaul.

SiTime's Elite Super-TCXOs leverage its unique DualMEMS temperature sensing and TurboCompensation technologies. The SiT5356/7 MEMS Super-TCXOs deliver dynamic performance for timing stability in the presence of environmental stressors due to air flow, temperature changes, vibration, shock, and electromagnetic interference. The SiT5356/7 can be factory-programmed to many combinations of frequency, stability, voltage, and pull range. This programmability enables designers to optimize the clock configuration while significantly reducing the lead-time and customization costs associated with quartz TCXOs where each frequency is custom built. The device also integrates multiple on-chip regulators to filter power supply noise, eliminating the need for a dedicated external LDO.

Dell'Oro: Huawei and Samsung gain share in RAN

The mobile infrastructure radio access network (RAN) market is off to a good start in 2019, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. Faster than expected uptake of Massive MIMO and 5G NR added fuel to the upswing that began in the second half of 2018.

"The upswing that began in the second half of 2018 extended into 1Q 2019 as market conditions continued to improve fueled by synchronized growth across China, U.S., and Korea to address data traffic growth, low-band LTE coverage expansions, and initial 5G NR deployments," said Stefan Pongratz, Senior Director with the Dell'Oro Group. "Even though we have not made any material adjustments to the overall short-term outlook, it is worth noting that 5G NR Massive MIMO shipments developed at a faster pace than expected in the quarter while the price points for these 5G NR Massive MIMO systems are trending at lower levels than we had initially projected, changing the upside and downside risks to the short-term forecast," continued Pongratz.

Following are additional highlights from the 1Q 2019 RAN report:

  • Huawei and Samsung recorded the largest overall RAN revenue share gains Y/Y.
  • North America and the Asia Pacific regions are projected to lead the RAN market in 2019.

Keysight launches next gen network analyzers

Keysight Technologies introduced its next generation of network analyzers for testing active and passive components for devices such as cell phones, satellite communications, and 5G base stations.

Keysight’s new E5080B, P50xxA Series, and M980xA Series network analyzers deliver next generation features and performance in benchtop, USB, and PXI form factors. These new analyzers combine built-in pulse generators and modulators, spectrum analysis, and time domain analysis in a single instrument to save time by fully characterizing modern devices without the need for additional test hardware.

Blue Planet adds Proactive Network Operations

Blue Planet, a division of Ciena, introduced a new AI-powered Proactive Network Operations (PNO) solution that significantly improvse the trouble-to-resolve process, forging a path toward a more adaptive network.

Blue Planet said its PNO can predict potential service disruptions with exceptional accuracy, foreseeing up to 95 percent of unplanned network outages based on analysis of Ethernet and optical loss of signal (LOS) anomalies. PNO can quickly pinpoint the root cause and then prescribe the best actions to preemptively resolve the issue.

Deutsche Telekom tests 100G wireless backhaul over microwave

A test of wireless backhaul transmission over millimeter wave spectrum conducted by Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom achieved rates exceeding 100 Gbps over a 1.5 km distance.

The test, which was conducted at the Deutsche Telekom Service Center in Athens, represents a major technical breakthrough, achieving more than 10 times greater throughput speeds than current commercial solutions on similar 70/80 GHz millimeter wave spectrum. The companies said that apart from confirming the potential of microwave technology over millimeter-wave spectrum (70/80 GHz and above) as a 5G-and-beyond fronthaul and backhaul solution, the trial showed the importance of applying spectral efficient techniques, such as MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) on wireless backhaul technologies to address upcoming 5G radio access demands.

Technical details

Key technological advances included an 8x8 line-of-sight MIMO with cross polarization interference cancellation setup using commercial MINI-LINK 6352 radios and a 2.5 GHz channel bandwidth in the E-band (70/80 GHz) able to transmit eight independent data streams over the radio path. This corresponds to a breakthrough spectrum efficiency of 55.2 bps/Hz at peak.

During the mid-April trial, transmission rates measures were consistently above 100 Gbps, with telecom grade availability (higher than 99.995 percent), with peak rates reaching 140 Gbps.

Alex Jinsung Choi, SVP Strategy & Technology Innovation, Deutsche Telekom, says: “Advanced backhaul solutions will be needed to support high data throughput and enhanced customer experience in the 5G era. This milestone confirms the feasibility of microwave over millimeter wave spectrum as an important extension of our portfolio of high-capacity, high-performance transport options for the 5G era. In addition, it represents a game changing solution for future fronthauling capabilities.”

Per Narvinger, Head of Product Area Networks, Ericsson, says: ”This trial signifies the successful establishment of true fiber capacities over the air using microwave.  This means that microwave will be even more relevant for communications service providers in creating redundant networks as a back-up for fiber, or as a way of closing a fiber ring when fiber is not a viable solution. By carrying such high capacities, microwave further establishes itself as a key transport technology, capable of delivering the performance requirements of 5G.”


  • In late 2018, Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom broke the 40Gbps barrier fully using commercial equipment including Ericsson’s MINI-LINK 6352 solution, which currently provides 10Gbps capacity over a 2000MHz channel. To raise throughput by more than 10 times, this trial used a 2500MHz channel and pre-commercial baseband and MIMO processing equipment in addition to MINI-LINK 6352 radios. 

 

SpaceX to launch its first 60 satellites this week

SpaceX expects to launch the first 60 satellites for its Starlink LEO constellation this week.

In a tweet, Elon Musk disclosed that six launches of 60 satellites each are needed for "minor coverage" and 12 launches of 60 satellites each are needed for "moderate" coverage. The accompanying photo reveals an extremely tight packing of photos into the Falcon fairing.

SpaceX has disclosed plans to deploy as many as 12,000 satellites in three, low earth orbit (LEO) shells. Cost estimates for full deployment approach $10 billion.

In November 2018, the FCC granted authority to SpaceX to construct, deploy, and operate a new very-low-Earth orbit constellation of more than 7,000 satellites using V-band frequencies. This is in addition to the authorization granted in March 2018. The FCC also granted SpaceX’s request to add the 37.5-42.0 GHz, and 47.2-50.2 GHz frequency bands to its previously authorized NGSO constellation. SpaceX now has the flexibility to provide both diverse geographic coverage and the capacity to support a wide range of broadband and communications services for residential, commercial, institutional, governmental, and professional users in the United States and globally.

FCC approves SpaceX's NGSO Satellite System

The FCC voted authorized SpaceX to construct, deploy, and operate a proposed non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite system comprising 4,425 satellites for the provision of fixed-satellite service (FSS) around the world.

In July 2016, OneWeb was granted approval to build a similar constellation of MEO satellites.

Two months ago, SpaceX successfully launched the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) PAZ observation satellite on behalf of Hisdesat and two satellites of its own.  Tintin A & B are the first two demonstration satellites for SpaceX's planned Starlink broadband satellite service. Both were successfully deployed into polar orbit and are communicating with Earth stations.

In regulatory filing, SpaceX has revealed that its initial system will consist of 4,425 satellites operating in 83 orbital planes (at altitudes ranging from 1,110 km to 1,325 km).  The system will require associated ground control facilities, gateway earth stations, and end-user earth stations. The system will use Ka- and Ku-Band spectrum.  SpaceX has separately filed for authority to operate in the V-Band, where the company has proposed an additional constellation of 7,500 satellites operating even closer to Earth. To implement the system, SpaceX will utilise the availability of significantly more powerful computing and software capabilities.  On the launch broadcast for the PAZ satellite, SpaceX said quite a bit of development work remains ahead on its satellite constellation plans

Urban Computing Foundation targets traffic infrastructure

A new Urban Computing Foundation is looking to accelerate open source software that improves mobility, safety, road infrastructure, traffic congestion and energy consumption in connected cities. The forum will address issues such as the adaption of geospatial and temporal machine learning techniques and urban environments and simulation methodologies for modeling and predicting city-wide phenomena.

The project is organized by The Linux Foundation and has backing from Uber, Facebook, Google, HERE Technologies, IBM, Interline Technologies, Senseable City Labs, StreetCred Labs and University of California San Diego (UCSD).

“During moments of both technology disruption and opportunity, open development is critical for enabling interoperability and speeding adoption,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. “The Urban Computing Foundation is poised to provide the compatibility tools and resources for developers to create software that can map out and operate technology services in any given urban area, ensuring safety and equitable access to transportation.”

China Mobile intros 5G-powered Smart Commercial Refrigerator

China Mobile Group Zhejiang is launching the "goBox", a 5G-powered smart commercial refrigerator developed by UTStarcom.

Fast connectivity and low latency enable the goBox smart vending machine to use facial recognition to confirm the identity of customers and autorize each transaction without carrying a mobile phone. Customers can then open the door to pick their favorite products and close the door to complete payment. 

China Mobile Group Zhejiang and UTStarcom are creating goBox applications for high-speed rail stations, hospitals, shopping malls, hotels and other fields, so that more people can enjoy the convenience of life in the 5G era.

Telecom Egypt signs PEACE subsea cable

Telecom Egypt entered agreements enabling the Pakistan & East Africa Connecting Europe (PEACE) subsea cable system to cross Egypt through new diversified terrestrial routes between the Zafarana and Abou Talat cable landing stations, where Telecom Egypt will provide PEACE with brand new state of the art landing facilities. The total value of the agreement amounts to US$45 million over the lifetime of the cable. 

In addition,  PEACE will be granted an additional fiber pair to its redundant cross Egypt routes to accommodate PEACE extensive demand to Europe with a total value of US$20 million. China-based HENGTONG OPTIC-ELECTRIC, which is a backer of PEACE, has also agreed to provide Telecom Egypt with fiber optic cables of different cores based on competitive pricing. This cabling will be used in Telecom Egypt's strategic plans for fiber deployment inside Egypt.

PEACE is a 12,000 km long cable system with landings in Pakistan, Djibouti, Egypt, Kenya and France.

Subsea connectivity restored to northern Greenland

Following repairs to a subsea cable linking Greenland and Canada, connectivity has been restored to customers north of the town of Sisimiut.

The population of South Greenland will have to wait for another 15-20 days before the southern branch of the damaged subsea cable is repaired.


Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark with a population of about 56,000, most of whom live along fjords in the southwest.

TELE-POST is the service provider for Greenland.

The subsea cable to Canada was breached in late December 2018. The weather has been a factor in scheduling the repair ship. Since then, an old microwave radio network has been providing service via a second subsea cable to Iceland.

SK Telecom and Microsoft to collaborate on 5G and AI

SK Telecom signed an MoU with Microsoft to collaborate on 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud.

The companies will work on combining the capabilities of SK Telecom’s AI platform (NUGU) with Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant. Collaboration will also focus on creating better customer experiences in the field of media and entertainment.

In addition, SK Telecom will adopt Microsoft 365 for its own workforce. Eventually, SK Telecom will expand Microsoft 365 to other ICT companies under the SK Group umbrella.

Verizon tests full virtualization of baseband functions

In a trial environment conducted with Nokia and Intel in California, Verizon achieved full virtualization of baseband functions – the heaviest portion of computing on the Radio Access Network (RAN).

Intel provided its Xeon Scalable processor-based platforms and FlexRAN reference architecture while Nokia provided its new AirScale All-in-Cloud Base Station architecture.

Verizon said this virtualization will enable the network to be hardware agnostic, using Common Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware, leading to greater flexibility and speed to deployment of products and services.

“Having virtualized the core of the network last year, this significant step forward in virtualizing the RAN edge is a critical piece of providing the next generation of wireless solutions for consumers and enterprises,” said Adam Koeppe, Senior Vice President of Network Planning.  “With a virtualized baseband unit, we will lay the foundation to be able to move computing functionality to the edge of the network and will be able to rapidly respond to customers’ varied latency and computing needs.”

Openreach to increase pace of FTTP rollout

Clive Selley, CEO, Openreach, announced plans to reach an extra one million premises with full fibre to the premises (FTTP) service within the original timeframe, meaning four million homes and businesses will have access to a full fibre to the premises (FTTP) service over our network by the end of March 2021.

Openreach deployed more FTTP during 2018/19 than in the previous seven years combined.
