MACOM expands GaN-on-Si power amplifier portfolio

MACOM Technology Solutions expanded its GaN-on-Si power amplifier portfolio with the introduction of its new MAMG-100227-010 broadband PA module optimized for use in land mobile radio (LMR) systems, wireless public safety communications and military tactical communications and electronic countermeasures (ECM).

The new device leverages high-performance MACOM GaN-on-Si to achieve an extremely wide frequency bandwidth of 225 – 2600 MHz, with 10W CW output power, 40% typical power added efficiency (PAE) over the band, 22 dB typical power gain, and up to 36V operation (28V typical). Provided in a compact 14x18 mm air-cavity laminate package with integrated gold-plated copper heatsink, the MAMG-100227-010 can eliminate the need for additional componentry and PCB space required for unmatched PA architectures, with top and bottom accessibility for improved mounting and heatsinking agility.

Mellanox supplies 200 Gigabit HDR InfiniBand to Finnish IT Center for Science

Mellanox Technologies will supply its 200 Gigabit HDR InfiniBand solutions to accelerate a multi-phase supercomputer system by CSC – the Finnish IT Center for Science. The new supercomputers, set to be deployed in 2019 and 2020, will serve the Finnish researchers in universities and research institutes, enhancing climate, renewable energy, astrophysics, nanomaterials and bioscience, among a wide range of exploration activities. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) will have their own separate partition for diverse simulation tasks ranging from ocean fluxes to atmospheric modeling and space physics.

Mellanox said its HDR InfiniBand interconnect solution was selected for its fast data throughout, extremely low latency, smart In-Network Computing acceleration engines, and enhanced Dragonfly network topology.

HyperX hits DDR4 overclocking world record of 5608MHz

HyperX, the gaming division of Kingston Technology company, set a new overclocking world record for the fastest DDR4 memory frequency at 5608MHz.

Current Predator DDR4 memory modules ship in frequencies up to 4133MHz along with low latencies CL12-CL19. Predator DDR4 memory is Intel XMP-ready including certified profiles optimized for Intel’s latest chipsets and are compatible with many of AMD’s latest chipsets.

A sample Predator DDR4 module was used in this overclocking world record. New 8G modules are scheduled to launch in Q2 2019 in kits of two, at 4266MHz and 4600MHz.

Telstra upgrades subsea infrastructure with Infinera's ICE4

Telstra is implementing Infinera’s fourth-generation ICE4 optical engine across its Asia Pacific subsea infrastructure to increase capacity, agility and reliability. The ICE4 upgrade increases Telstra’s fibre capacity by 160 percent and port density by 140 percent, while also decreasing power consumption, allowing Telstra to continually improve network services for customers.

Telstra is one of the largest providers of 100 Gbps network services globally and the ICE4 technology positions the company to support customers’ future connectivity demands, activating capacity per wavelength of up to 200 Gbps.

Padtec sells submarine systems division to IPG Photonics

Padtec, a global supplier of optical communications systems based in Brazil, agreed to sell its submarine optical systems division to IPG Photonics for R$75 million (approximately US$20 million). IPG Photonics is a US-based supplier of high power lasers and amplifiers.

In addition to the optical repeater, Padtec's submarine systems division acquired by IPG also includes the structure for submerged plant deployment, operation and maintenance services.

Padtec said the sale advances its strategy to focus on the high-capacity optical transport market for terrestrial networks. The resources resulting from the sale will be directed, primarily, to research and
development and to the expansion of the company in the global market. Padtec’s advisors were IGC Partners and BRGC Advogados.

ASN intros Space Division Multiplexing for subsea cables

At this week's PTC'19 conference in Honolulu, Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) is introducing an “SDM1 by ASN” technique using Space Division Multiplexing for optimizing cost per bit  on subsea cables.

According to posted materials, ASN aims to push the limits of theoretical design capacity by minimizing the non-linear effects that add complexity and cost.

“SDM1 by ASN” will leverage a combination of repeater pump farming, low Aeff submarine fibres, and higher fibre count cables.

ASN debuts aluminium conductor cable for subsea systems

Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) announced the commercial availability of aluminium conductor cable for optical fiber submarine systems. 

ASN says aluminium offers an alternative to copper conductor cables, with same level of quality and reliability. The company has conducted extensive testing and qualification program to demonstrate its suitability for ultra-long haul deep sea transmission systems. This included mechanical, electrical, optical and environmental tests performed on deep sea and armoured cables, also validated during a sea trial.

ASN also noted that this new cable variant has already been selected for a major long-distance project by Facebook.

Najam Ahmad, Vice President, Network Engineering at Facebook, said: “Our efforts are focused on expanding connectivity and increasing the adoption of innovative technologies, without compromising reliability. The use of aluminum cable in submarine systems represents an attractive evolution as technology advances and demand increases for more data throughput and higher speeds.”

The use of aluminium conductor answers the need of operators and content providers to better support the growth of demand and to reduce submarine cable costs, by introducing an alternative to copper
conductor, which is one of the most expensive raw materials currently used in repeatered submarine systems.

ASN cites the following benefits of the new aluminium conductor compared to copper:

  • A better cost-effectiveness, while maintaining a performance equal to copper.
  • A more stable supply market, which benefited over the past fifteen years from technology improvements, mainly driven by the oil & gas industry. This has led to the development of new industrial techniques and equipment now available for aluminium processing and welding on long distances.
  • A potential for higher speed of production to speed-up the delivery of new systems.
  • An enabler to achieve solutions for low direct current resistance (DCR) with higher number of fiber pairs.

Dell'Oro: 5G RAN investment to approach $160 billion in 5 years

Robust demand for 5G NR will propel the cumulative worldwide RAN market to approach $160 B over the next five years, according to a new forecast report from Dell'Oro Group.

Other highlights from the Mobile RAN 5-Year Forecast Report:

  • 5G NR will scale at a significantly faster pace than LTE.
  • Sub 6 GHz spectrum is expected to drive the lion share of the RAN capex (Figure 1)
  • New capex to address IoT, Fixed Wireless Access, In-Building, and Public Safety opportunities for both private and public deployments will comprise a double-digit share of the RAN market by the outer part of the forecast period.
  • Sub 6 GHz Massive MIMO transceiver shipments are projected to eclipse 200 million.

“Even if 5G will be just another G initially, the reality is that for the carriers with the right spectrum assets, the mid-band Massive MIMO business case can be extremely compelling for the MBB use case,” said Stefan Pongratz, analyst with the Dell’Oro Group. “At the same time, we are more optimistic today about the mmW opportunity than we were a year ago. Oracle opens Toronto data center

Oracle inaugurated a Toronto data center to support in-region customer demand for its public Oracle Cloud Infrastructure service.

Oracle plans to open additional regions in Australia, Europe, Japan, South Korea, India, Brazil, the Middle East, and the United States, including Virginia, Arizona, and Illinois to support public sector and Department of Defense customers. This expansion complements an existing Edge network consisting of more than 30 global locations and 300 plus sensors, providing Oracle customers with a comprehensive Internet performance data set, and deep edge services capabilities.

AT&T outlines three pillars of 5G in business

AT&T is pursuing a three-pillar approach for 5G business solutions including:

Mobile 5G - AT&T is on track to launch a standards-based nationwide mobile 5G network in early 2020, with seamless handoffs between Wi-Fi, LTE and 5G. The network is currently active in parts of the 12 cities.

Fixed Wireless - within the next few weeks, AT&T Wireless Broadband will offer multiple speed tiers up to 50 Mbps. This solution builds on AT&T's fiber distribution -- over 8 million business customer locations sit within 1,000 feet of the company's fiber/ Nearly 2.2 million locations are currently connect with fiber today.

Edge Computing -- AT&T Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) uses the software-defined network to enable faster access to data processing, and gives flexibility in how businesses manage their cellular traffic through on-premise hardware and software. Iliad acquires majority stake in Jaguar Network

The Iliad Group has acquired a 75% stake in Jaguar Network for EUR 100 million. Kevin Polizzi, Jaguar Network’s Founder, remains the company’s Chief Executive Officer and has
retained a 25% stake.

Jaguar Network, which is based in Paris, operates data centers in Marseille and Lyon, along with a private fiber network extending 7,000km across France and neighboring countries.

Chayora advances its data center plans in China

T-Mobile US hires Ulf Ewaldsson as SR VP Technology Transformation

T-Mobile US named Ulf Ewaldsson as its new Senior Vice President, Technology Transformation, reporting directly to Chief Technology Officer and EVP, Neville Ray.

Ewaldsson spent nearly 30 years at Ericsson, where he most recently served as a senior advisor to the company’s CEO. Prior to that, Ewaldsson held various senior leadership roles including Senior Vice President and Head of Business Area Digital Services, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy & Technology Officer, Head of Group Function Strategy & Technology, and Head of Product Area Radio.

Toshiba expands line of automotive Ethernet ICs

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage expanded its lineup of automotive Ethernet bridge portfolio with new “TC9562 series” ICs. Sample shipments will start in February, and volume production will start in October.

The Ethernet AVB specification offers real-time reliable data transmission and is increasingly used in vehicles. Toshiba currently offers the TC9560 series of Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000Mbps) solutions compliant with IEEE 802.1AS[3] and IEEE 802.1Qav.

Bloomberg: U.S. Preparing Trump Order to Restrict Chinese Telecoms

On Friday, Bloomberg reported that the Trump administration is preparing an executive order to restrict Huawei and/or ZTE from operating in the U.S. over national security concerns.

The order, which reportedly would give greater authority to the Commerce Department, apparently had not yet been reviewed by the president.

Caixin: Huawei Founder Discloses More Details on Daughter’s Arrest

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei said his daughter Meng Wanzhou was in transit to Argentina when she was detained in Vancouver last month, according to reporting from Caixin and other Chinese media. The purpose of the trip reportedly was to discuss the restructuring of Huawei's overseas business units, including the possible outcome of granting independence to overseas divisions. Ren planned to join his daughter at the meeting but chose a different travel route.

Telstra activates rapid, subsea restoration service with Ciena GeoMesh

Telstra is introducing a new rapid restoration service on its busiest subsea cable routes in Asia based on Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme solution. Ericsson is also a partner.

Currently, Telstra’s assured availability “Always on” service - offers restoration within eight hours. Telstra’s new service will reduce that time from hours to minutes.

Trials were held in December and the new service is now available on three of Telstra’s intra-Asia routes.

“The Asian region presents one of the most challenging environments for subsea cable systems. Busy and shallow shipping ports in Hong Kong and Singapore, high-levels of fishing activity and an ecosystem prone to natural disasters, all threaten to disrupt or damage underwater infrastructure,” said Nadya Melic, Telstra’s Head of Connectivity and Platforms.

Ericsson’s Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, Emilio Romeo said: “Through this innovative technology we are supporting Telstra to meet ever-increasing network demands and providing unprecedented levels of reliability, automation and intelligence. IBM and Vodafone Business form partnership

IBM and Vodafone Business are establishing a new venture focused on digital transformation enabled by 5G, Edge and Software Defined Networking.

Under the new venture, Vodafone Business customers will have access to IBM's cloud offerings. IBM will provide managed services to Vodafone Business' cloud and hosting unit, in an eight-year engagement valued at approximately $550 million (€480 million). Customers will benefit from IBM's optimisation, automation and cognitive capabilities which help them to run their business effectively in a cloud environment. The venture will co-develop new digital solutions, combining Vodafone's leadership in IoT, 5G and edge computing with IBM's multicloud, industry expertise and professional services. The companies expect to be up an running in the first half of this year.

Baidu employs Xilix for edge acceleration board

Baidu has developed an edge acceleration computing solution enabled by Xilinx and targetted at edge application products such as smart-video security surveillance solutions, advanced-driver-assistance systems and next-generation robots.

The Baidu EdgeBoard is a turn-key solution that can be configured and customized as part of the Baidu Brain AI Hardware Platform initiative.

The Baidu Brain AI Hardware Platform is part of the Baidu Brain AI capabilities open platform, encompassing Baidu's open computing services and hardware and software products for edge artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

EdgeBoard is based on the Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC, which integrates real-time processors with programmable logic.

"Xilinx offers the world's leading adaptive chips and development support. The flexible EdgeBoard we built based on Xilinx is designed to enable developers and engineers to quickly leverage Baidu-proven technology or deploy self-defined models, enabling faster deployment," said Youping Yu, general manager of Baidu's AI ecosystem division. Huawei completes 5G NR test using 2.6 GHz band

Huawei completed a test 5G NR (New Radio) using the 2.6 GHz spectrum band in a trial organized by the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group.

To date, Huawei officially completed the third phase of China's 5G laboratory and field testing in NSA (Non-Stand Alone) and SA (Stand Alone) scenarios. The most mainstream NR frequency bands, including the 3.5GHz and 4.9GHz, were tested earlier. The most recent 2.6 GHz test was conducted in Huairou 5G test field and CAICT (China Academy of Information and Communications Technology) MTNet (Mobile Communication Trial Simulation Network) Lab using Huawei's latest 5G Massive MIMO 64T64R gNB.

For 2T4R 5G terminals, the single-user downlink peak throughput exceeded 1.8 Gbps.

Huawei said the successful verification of its 2.6 GHz NR gNB proves that 2.6GHz is a valid choice for operators to deploy a 5G NSA/SA commercial network. It also shows Huawei's strong determination to accelerate the development of 2.6GHz industry together with industry.

Yang Chaobin, president of Huawei's 5G product line, said: "In the early stage of 5G network deployment, C-Band and 2.6GHz are undoubtedly the most mainstream frequency bands. The C-Band industry chain is gradually becoming mature under the joint efforts of all of us. Similarly, the industry chain of 2.6GHz needs to be promoted together.
