FWD: Australia's nbn hits 4 million connection milestone

Australia's nbn broadband access network initiative surpasses the four million connection milestone -- representing the halfway mark of the previously stated goal of connecting eight million homes and businesses by 2020.  This compares with approximately 2.4 million connections a year ago.

“With our aim to help bridge the digital divide and see that Australians, regardless of location, have access to fast broadband, we are proud today to announce that the rollout of the nbn access network to regional Australia is on the home stretch. We have seen a massive improvement in regional internet access, with our wholesale broadband services offering more competition, faster speeds and even giving some Australians internet access for the first time," stated NBN Co’s CEO Bill Morrow.

  • In regional Australia, nearly all homes and businesses outside of major urban areas now in design or construction stages, or able to order an nbn™ service from a phone or internet provider.
  • Australia now ranks 17th among OECD countries (up from 29th in 2012) in terms of equality of internet speed and proportion of people without internet access. By 2021, Australia is estimated to move from being in the bottom 10 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries in equality of internet access and speed to the top 102.
  • The nbn access network is estimated to have helped drive A$450 million in additional gross domestic product in regional Australia in the 2017 financial year and is forecast to drive an additional $5.3 billion in additional gross domestic product in regional areas in FY21.
  • The nbn access network is estimated to have helped create an additional 1,750 jobs in regional Australia by the 2017 financial year and this employment impact is forecast to reach up to 20,000 jobs by FY21.
  • Annual growth in people working from home in regional areas with access to the nbn access network is significant, at 2.2 per cent per year from 2011–2016 versus a decline in the annual growth rate of 1.1 per cent in regional Australia without access to the nbn™ access network.
  • The growth of new businesses in regions connected to the nbn access network accelerated at twice the pace of the national average with up to 5,400 additional new businesses created in 2017.



Australia's NBN Co launches Fibre-to-the-Curb

NBN Co announced the launch of Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC) access service in its first locations.

NBN Co has provided a limited release of FTTC services to more than 1,000 homes and businesses in Coburg, North Melbourne in Victoria and Miranda, South Sydney in New South Wales. A larger rollout is planned for later this year. The service supports speeds up to 100/40Mbps. Faster speeds will be possible when G.fast becomes available over the copper link into the home. NBC Co expects to launch G.fast later this year too.

“As with the introduction of any new technology, we will continue to gain insights as we navigate the complexity of the build as well as potential issues which can arise when people connect to the network. Juniper extends EVPN-VXLAN fabric to the campus

Juniper introduced a common architecture for campus and data center fabrics based on its EVPN-VXLAN fabric. The idea is to create an enterprise-wide fabric with simple, secure and automated multi-cloud capabilities. The company says the EVPN-VXLAN protocol is ideal for campus architectures because it provides layer-3 transport with layer-2 capabilities that allow enterprises to evolve while also taking into consideration legacy applications.

Highlights of the announcement:

  • Juniper’s EX Series Switches are augmented for EVPN-VXLAN campus architecture. A new EX4650 Switch with 25G/100G density complements the already available and EVPN-VXLAN capable EX9000 Series Switches.
  •  A global resell agreement with Aerohive Networks. This resale deal enables Juniper to provide a unified cloud managed campus and branch networking solution from Ethernet switches to enterprise-ready wireless access points. 
  • Enhancements to Juniper’s branch portfolio: Juniper’s Contrail SD-WAN now supports fine-grained Application Quality of Experience (AppQoE), offering visibility and dynamic management into individual granular application session performance for more than 3,700 unique applications, such as Microsoft Outlook, Sharepoint and Skype for Business. Based on real-time analysis of application traffic in Juniper’s NFX, SRX and vSRX Series WAN edge endpoints, customers can tune application performance to and from the branch using Contrail Service Orchestration managed policies. This gives enterprise IT managers the ability to dynamically prioritize business-critical application traffic based on business policy intent. Juniper has also enhanced architectural reliability and flexibility in the branch and WAN. An SD-WAN industry first, Juniper’s NFX and SRX Series branch devices now support active-active clustering, delivering double the connectivity and reliability to important sites across any type of WAN connectivity, such as LTE, broadband internet or traditional MPLS.

NTT Com launches VMware Cloud service over its global MPLS backbone

NTT Com is preparing to launch a global Enterprise Cloud (ECL) service powered by VMware Cloud Foundation. The service will deliver advanced hybrid cloud environments consisting of VMware's full software-defined data center stack, and enable a frictionless path to the hybrid cloud through the inclusion of VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension.

NTT Com will also become a VMware Cloud Verified Partner and will display the VMware Cloud Verified logo as proof that its services are compatible with VMware cloud infrastructure.

NTT Com said that by combining the new ECL powered by VMware Cloud Foundation with its global MPLS service, Arcstar Universal One (UNO) and Nexcenter data centers, the new service will enable enterprises to securely and easily transit to the cloud, or provide a consistent hybrid cloud infrastructure across on-premises data centers and the cloud.

Reliance to acquire Radisys for approximately $67 million

Reliance Industries Limited agreed to acquire Radisys Corporation for US$1.72 per share in cash -- representing an enterprise value of about $67 million based on 39 million shares outstanding.

Radisys, which is based in Hillsboro, Oregon, has nearly 600 employees with an engineering team based out of Bangalore, India, and sales and support offices globally. Radisys delivers value to service providers and telecom equipment vendors by providing disruptive

Formula One Group goes all-in with AWS

Formula One Group (Formula 1) is moving the vast majority of its infrastructure from on-premises data centers to AWS, and standardizing on AWS’s machine learning and data analytics services.

AWS is working with Formula 1 to enhance its race strategies, data tracking systems, and digital broadcasts through a range of AWS services. These include Amazon SageMaker, a fully managed machine learning service; AWS Lambda, AWS's event-driven serverless computing service; and AWS analytics services. Formula 1 has also selected AWS Elemental Media Services to power its video asset workflows, enhancing the viewing experience for its international fan base.

Veridium raises $16.5 million for biometric authentication

Veridium, a start-up based in Quincy, Mass., announced $16.5 million in Series B funding for its biometric authentication solutions.

Veridium offers a software-only biometrics platform that enables users to replace passwords, tokens, OTPs or swipe cards with multiple biometrics from their smartphone. The solutions include native device sensors such as face and fingerprint, and Veridium’s 4 Fingers TouchlessID. The result is increased security, improved convenience and user experience; all while reducing fraud at a lower total cost of ownership than traditional multi-factor authentication (MFA) solutions.

The investment round was led by UK entrepreneur and philanthropist, Michael Spencer, with participation from Citrix Systems, Inc. and financial services executive and investor Michael Powell.

C Spire expands footprint with acquisition of TekLinks

C Spire has acquired TekLinks, a cloud, managed and professional services provider based ub Birmingham, Alabama. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 2001, TekLinks has primary operations in three states – Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Many of its eight offices operate in fast growth markets in the Southeast U.S., including Birmingham, Huntsville, and Nashville.

In 2016, TekLinks bought Nashville-based Guidant Partners, a leading managed services firm. In 2015, TekLinks acquired fast-growing cloud services player Claris Networks, based in Knoxville and in 2013, the company merged with health-care managed services provider ClinicAnywhere formerly ETG.

Comcast suffers big outage after fiber cuts

On Friday, 30-June-2018 Comcast suffered a major outage impacting users across the United States. The disruption appeared to last 4-5 hours. There was no word on how many of Comcast's 26 million broadband customers were affected.

In a statement, Comcast said: "We identified 2 unrelated fiber cuts to our network backbone providers. Our engineers are restoring services to business & residential internet, tv & voice customers. Apologies to those affected."

Keysight supplies 5G protocol tester to MediaTek

Keysight Technologies is extending its collaboration with MediaTek to accelerate 5G New Radio (NR) chipset development and testing of 5G NR protocol stacks.

Specifically, MediaTek will use Keysight’s 5G Protocol R&D Toolset for Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocol development, pre-silicon deployment, and full stack chipset validation across sub-6GHz and mmWave frequencies using the latest 3GPP Release 15 5G NR standards.

Keysight announces 5G NR Emulation

Keysight Technologies announced its PROPSIM F64 5G Channel Emulation Solution – the industry’s first 5G New Radio (NR)-ready channel emulation solution. Keysight’s PROPSIM F64 5G Channel Emulation Solution enables chipset, device, and network equipment manufacturers to characterize end-to-end system performance of the latest 4G and 5G base stations and mobile devices by emulating real-world radio conditions in the lab.

Keysight said its PROPSIM F64 5G Channel Emulation Solution supports all 5G NR signal bandwidths, carrier aggregation (CA) schemes, and offers the highest number of channels for massive MIMO channel emulation and testing. Finland's Elisa claims commercial 5G launch

Elisa Oyj, a Finnish telecommunications company based in Helsinki, is the first operator in the world to begin a commercial 5G service. Elisa's 5G networks now operational in Tampere and Tallinn.

On 27-June-2018, Elisa announced that it had begun to sell 5G subscriptions.

The first person to use the 5G network was Anne Berner, Minister of Transport and Communications, who made a video call to Kadri Simson, Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure in Estonia.

Elisa noted that the first GSM telephone call in the world was also made using its network.

However, Finland has yet to officially issue 5G licenses.

"We aim to make Finland the leading nation as a developer of 5G mobile services. The Ministry of Communications is ready to allocate the first 5G licenses to the 3,400–3,800 megahertz frequency band in autumn, which will make Finland among the first countries in the world to start building 5G networks, says Anne Berner, Minister of Transport and Communications.


  • On 14-May-2018, Ooredoo claimed to be the first operator in the world to launch a live 5G network. Its deployment runs on the 3.5GHz spectrum band. Ooredoo announced that its first 5G site was activated just days are its 5G commercial core came online.

    The first stage of Ooredoo’s 5G Supernet deployment will cover an area from The Pearl Qatar to Hamad International Airport, with Lagoona, Katara Cultural Village, West Bay, the Corniche and Souq Waqif also included in the initial commercial launch coverage area.

    The carrier did not say whether it had begun to sell 5G subscriptions, 5G smartphones or 5G CPE.

AT&T hits gigabit speed with fixed 5G pilot service

AT&T is seeing peak wireless downlink speeds nearing 1 Gbps and latency rates less than 20 milliseconds in its field trials of fixed 5G service.

The results were achieved in AT&T's 5G pilot in South Bend, Indiana.


AT&T updates its 5G and FTT rollout plans

AT&T confirmed plans to roll out mobile 5G service in a dozen U.S. markets by late 2018, making it the first U.S. carrier to do so. The initial launch is aimed at consumers. Trials of 5G business applications are also planned this year.

The company also updated its plans in the following areas:

  • LTE-LAA - AT&T, which deployed its first commercial LTE-Licensed Assisted Access (LTE-LAA) site in downtown Indianapolis in November 2017, now says it intends to launch the technology in at least 2 dozen additional metros this year. LAA offers theoretical peak speeds of up to 1 Gbps. In previous field tests, AT&T observed actual peak wireless speeds of 979 Mbps. 
  • AT&T 5G Evolution - this series of upgrades based on LTE-Advanced technologies launched in 23 major metros in 2017. Further rollouts are underway. 
  • LTE-M - AT&T's nationwide, low-power, wide-area LTE-M network went live in 2017. LTE-M supports large-scale IoT applications, like smart city services, smart metering, asset tracking, supply chain management, security and alarm monitoring, and personal wearables. 
  • Fixed Wireless Internet - in 2017, AT& launched high-speed internet access to over 440,000 locations across 18 states in mostly rural areas through technologies like Fixed Wireless Internet, as part of the FCC Connect America Fund. In 2018, AT&T plans to reach over 660,000 total locations in 2018 and 1.1 million locations by the end of 2020 in those 18 states.
  • Fixed 5G and AirGig - AT&T has pre-standard 5G fixed wireless trials underway in Austin, Texas; Waco, Texas; Kalamazoo, Michigan and South Bend, Indiana with residential, small business, and education customers. The company has also announced 2 trials of its AirGig technology, which targets transport for ultra-fast low latency internet over power lines. 
  • Fiber for Consumers and Businesses - AT&T Fiber currently reaches more than 7 million locations across 67 metros nationwide. This year, AT&T plans to add 3 million more locations on. By mid-2019, AT&T Fiber should reach at least 12.5 million locations across at least 82 metro area/ 
  • G.fast - In 2017, AT&T launched G.fast service supporting Internet speeds up to 500 Mbps for multifamily properties across 8 metro areas outside of its 21-state traditional service area. AT&T now to extend G.fast to apartment communities.

Nuro tests its autonomous vehicles for grocery delivery

Nuro, a start-up based in Mountain View, California, will work with Kroger, one the largest grocery store chains in the U.S., to test a fully-autonomous vehicle for home delivery service.

Nuro said this is the the first application test for its autonomous vehicle hardware and software. The pilot testing is expected to begin this fall.

Sierra Wireless intros FirstNet vehicle router

Sierra Wireless unveiled its AirLink MG90 High-Performance Multi-Network Vehicle Router supporting FirstNet’s First Priority – which includes priority and pre-emption for first responders – and FirstNet’s 700MHz Band 14 spectrum. The router supports LTE-Advanced Pro (Cat-12 speeds) and can switch seamlessly between FirstNet Band 14 wireless spectrum and other U.S. commercial mobile networks, with dual concurrent Gigabit Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet and extensions to Land Mobile Radio (LMR) and satellite systems.  This is the first device of its kind to achieve the FirstNet Ready designation.

The router is based on Sierra Wireless' AirPrime EM7511 LTE-Advanced Pro embedded module, which was also recently approved by AT&T and is the first embedded module available for the FirstNet network.

SM Optics, a start-up with operations in Italy and China, introduced a new WDM ROADM solution combining the flexibility of a disaggregated platform with the cost-effectiveness of WSS-free architecture.

SM Optics' LIGHTMODE LM-1 micro ROADM open line system is a disaggregated WDM functional block offering in a single rack unit a multi-degree ROADM.

Silver Peak adds $90 million in funding for SD-WAN

Silver Peak, which specializes in broadband and hybrid WAN solutions, announced a $90 million strategic investment from TCV.

Viasat launches 35-100 Mbps business Internet across U.S.

Viasat began offering a nationwide, business-class Internet service with a variety of unlimited and metered data plans featuring download speed options ranging from 35 Mbps to 100 Mbps across U.S. Maximum speeds vary by location.

Viasat broadband business internet will also provide a more resilient secondary/backup connection for businesses in urban locations.

The new business Internet service is delivered via the ViaSat-2 satellite system, which was launched on June 1, 2017 by Arianespace.  The Ka-band satellite was built by Boeing.

Belgium's KU Leuven selects ADVA's FSP 3000 CloudConnect

The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven), a leading research university in Flanders, Belgium, has deployed ADVA's FSP 3000 CloudConnect to enable 32Gbit/s Fibre Channel and 100Gbit/s Ethernet services.

KU Leuven's research and education (R&E) network is the first in the region to support Gen 6 Fibre Channel technology.

The deployment uses ADVA's FSP 3000 CloudConnect platform along with its QuadFlex line card and OpenFabric cross-connect – two technologies optimized for maximum flexibility and efficiency in metro data center interconnect networks.

ADVA’s Elite partner Arcadiz Telecom, which played a key role in the rigorous planning and smooth installation of the transport system, will also provide ongoing maintenance support.

Chennai-based Sify Technologies Limited has selected Ciena’s converged packet optical for its backbone.

JASK raises $25M for Autonomous Security Operations Center platform

JASK, a start-up founded in 2015 with dual headquarters in San Francisco and Austin, announced $25 million in series B funding for its Autonomous Security Operations Center (ASOC) platform.

The funding round was led by Kleiner Perkins with participation from early investors, including Battery Ventures, Dell Technologies Capital, TenEleven Ventures and Vertical Venture Partners. This brings JASK’s total funding to $39 million.

JASK’s mission is to modernize security operations by delivering an asset-independent, open platform that provides prioritized threat information with an autonomous workflow of what, where, why and how SOC analysts should take action.

The JASK ASOC platform automates much of the work of a tier one security analyst by correlating and analyzing vast amounts of data and summarizing the important information via JASK Insights™, streamlined notifications that indicate a combination of events or activities that should be investigated. JASK Insights contain all of the information in one actionable interface to help speed investigation and response times.
