IDC forecasts semiconductor growth of 7.7%, reaching $450B in 2018

IDC is predicting that worldwide semiconductor revenue will grow for the third consecutive year in 2018 to $450 billion, up 7.7% over 2017, down from 24% in 2017.

IDC's new Semiconductor Applications Forecaster (SAF) also forecasts that semiconductor revenues will log a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9% from 2017-2022, reaching $482 billion in 2022.

"Market consolidation in the semiconductor industry over the past five years continues to shape the competitive landscape for semiconductor suppliers as each company continues to refine its core markets and make acquisitions to find new and emerging sectors for growth. The pace of change and technology is expected to accelerate as machine learning and autonomous systems enable a more diverse set of architectures to address the opportunity. This will fuel the engine of growth for semiconductor technology over the next decade," said Mario Morales, program vice president, Semiconductors at IDC.

Some key findings from IDC's Semiconductor Application Forecaster (excluding memory) include:


  • Semiconductor revenue for the computing industry segment will decline 4.0% this year and will show a negative CAGR of -0.7% for the 2017-2022 forecast period. Two bright spots for the computing segment are computing and enterprise SSDs, growing in high double digits and 9.8% CAGR respectively for 2017-2022.
  • Semiconductor revenue for the mobile wireless communications segment will grow 5.5% year over year this year with a CAGR of 5.8% for 2017-2022. Semiconductor revenue for 4G mobile phones will experience an annual growth rate of 10.9% in 2018 and a CAGR of 3.1% for 2017-2022. 5G will also drive growth in the later part of the forecast as the technology becomes mainstream by the middle of the next decade.
  • Communications infrastructure semiconductors are forecast to grow at a 1.7% CAGR from 2017-2022 with the strongest growth coming from consumer networks.
  • The automotive market and the industrial markets will continue to be the leading areas of growth for the semiconductor market throughout the forecast period, growing at a 9.6% and 6.8% CAGR from 2017-2022. 

BT launches small business broadband gateway with LTE backup

BT introduced a business-grade broadband product which switches automatically to 4G if there is an interruption to their fixed broadband service.

BT said the new product– called 4G Assure – is the first example of a new portfolio of products for converged connectivity services to business customers. The launch is aligned with, and closely follows, the strategy updates provided by BT Group and its Consumer business, where convergence features prominently.

Comcast pursues a retail strategy with new store designs

Comcast opened four new retail stores featuring a refreshed design aimed at getting customers and potential customers to try its services.

The company says its new interactive Xfinity retail stores will provide customers with "an immersive destination to discover Xfinity products and services. Comcast has been on a journey to transform its customer experience and the stores are a place where customers can learn how to optimize their Xfinity services and can address any service needs."

Xfinity stores are arranged by product area —Xfinity Mobile, Xfinity X1, Xfinity Home and Xfinity Internet. The first locations of the new store format recently opened in Pueblo, Colorado; Aventura, Florida; Henrico, Virginia; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Tucson, Arizona.

“We want to bring our customers an incredible shopping experience, which showcases the power and innovation of our Xfinity products and demonstrates how they work together,” said Tom DeVito, SVP, Retail Sales and Service, Comcast Cable. “We have heard from our customers that they want to touch and feel our Xfinity products and understand their capabilities as they make decisions for their own home. Our Xfinity stores are the place to do that.”

Comcast plans to open more than 50 of the new and enhanced Xfinity stores in high-traffic shopping centers across the service footprint in 2018.

Pure Storage hits quarterly revenue of $255.9 million, up 40% yoy

Pure Storage posted revenue of $255.9 million for its quarter ended April 30, 2018., up 40% yoy, exceeding the high end of previously issued guidance. The was a GAAP operating loss of $61.9 million, compared to a loss of $58.2 million in the same period a year ago.

"Pure has delivered another strong quarter as we lead the industry in delivering new data-centric architectures that enable enterprises to succeed both today and tomorrow," said Pure Storage CEO Charles Giancarlo. "The combination of our innovative business model, first-to-market technology innovations, and focus on customer success drove continued momentum in Q1."

Dell'Oro: Microwave transmission market revenue grew 9% in Q1

The microwave transmission market grew 9% in 1Q 2018 compared to the previous year period, according to new research from Dell'Oro Group. NEC outperformed other manufacturers in the quarter and captured the highest shipment share.

Additional highlights from the 1Q 2018 Microwave Transmission Quarterly Report:

  • Packet Microwave comprised nearly 45 percent of the total Microwave Transmission market revenue in the quarter.
  • E/V Band system revenue grew year-over-year (Y/Y) for a 23rd consecutive quarter, and is projected to grow for at least another five years.
  • The country with the largest demand for Microwave Transmission equipment is India; 17 percent of global shipments during the past twelve months ending March 2018 were for use in India.

"The Microwave Transmission market dramatically improved in 1Q 2018," stated Jimmy Yu, Vice President with Dell'Oro Group.  "Following two years of market contraction due to fewer LTE cell site deployments and upgrades, we had expected another year of decline until volume deployments of 5G NR occurred in late 2019.  Yet, the Microwave Transmission market posted a strong first quarter and is expected to turn a positive full year," continued Yu.

Project Airship aims for fully containerized clouds - OpenStack on Kubernetes

AT&T is working with SKT, Intel and the OpenStack Foundation to launch Project Airship, a new open infrastructure project that will offer a unified, declarative, fully containerized, and cloud-native platform. The idea is to let cloud operators manage sites at every stage from creation through minor and major updates, including configuration changes and OpenStack upgrades.

AT&T said the project builds on the foundation laid by the OpenStack-Helm project launched in 2017. In a blog posting, Amy Wheelus, vice president of Cloud and Domain 2.0 Platform Integration, says the initial focus is "to introduce OpenStack on Kubernetes (OOK) and the lifecycle management of the resulting cloud, with the scale, speed, resiliency, flexibility, and operational predictability demanded of network clouds."

She states that AT&T will use Airship as the foundation of its network cloud running over its 5G core, which will support the launch of 5G services in 12 cities later this year.  Airship will also be used by Akraino Edge Stack, which is a new Linux Foundation project for creating an open source software stack supporting high-availability cloud services optimized for edge computing systems and applications.

"We are pleased to bring continued innovation with Airship, extending the work we started in 2016 with the OpenStack and Kubernetes communities to create a continuum for modern and open infrastructure. AT&T seeds Akraino project for carrier-scale edge computing

The Linux Foundation will host a new Akraino project to create an open source software stack supporting high-availability cloud services optimized for edge computing systems and applications.

To seed the project, AT&T is contributing code designed for carrier-scale edge computing applications running in virtual machines and containers.

“This project will bring the extensive work AT&T has already done to create low-latency, carrier-grade technology for the edge that address latency and reliability needs,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of The Linux Foundation. “Akraino complements LF Networking projects like ONAP in automating services from edge to core. We’re pleased to welcome it to The Linux Foundation and invite the participation of others as we work together to form Akraino and establish its governance.”

“Akraino, coupled with ONAP and OpenStack, will help to accelerate progress towards development of next-generation, network-based edge services, fueling a new ecosystem of applications for 5G and IoT,” said Mazin Gilbert, Vice President of Advanced Technology at AT&T Labs.

MTS activates Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) in Russia

MTS, the leading communications service provider in Russia and the CIS, deployed Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) technology at a shopping center in Ufa City, Russia.

The service activation took place in the Planeta shopping center in Ufa on May 17 following a series of tests conducted on a live MTS network using a commercial smartphone.

The new LAA network in Ufa aggregates a 20 MHz band in the 1800 MHz licensed LTE spectrum (4x4 MIMO, 256-QAM) and three 20 MHz bands (2x2 MIMO, 256-QAM) in the 5 GHz unlicensed spectrum. The installation is built on Ericsson’s ERS indoor small cell stations using 1800 (2212) and LAA (2205) broadband radio modules, while Motorola Moto Z2 Force smartphone powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform was used as a smartphone.

The Snapdragon 835 integrates X16 LTE modem, the first commercial modem supporting the LAA technology. The configuration yielded downlink speeds of 979 Mbps.

This marks the first commercial LAA rollout in the region. Qualcomm is also listed as a technology partner.

Interxion opens second data center in Marseille

Interxion officially opened the first phase of MRS2, Interxion’s second data center in Marseille, which has become the Mediterranean capital for telecoms, cloud and digital exchanges. Its geographical position as the landing point for 13 submarine telecommunications cables is a significant advantage.

The new facility will help meet the growing demand from international connectivity and content providers, and cloud platforms wanting to use Marseille as a hub to deliver their services and applications to Europe and further afield to Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

MRS2 is located in re-furbished, former naval workshops at the Marseille Fos Port. It will be built in three phases which will offer customers 4,400 sqm of equippable space with over 7MW of available power. The first phase, which is now completed, consists of 700 sqm of equipable space, while the second will offer 1,900 sqm from the second quarter of 2019. The capital expenditure associated with the construction of MRS2 as a whole is expected to be approximately €76 million.

Together with MRS1, the new data center allows a campus configuration, giving customers diversity of routes to ensure the resilience of their networks, as well as capacity for further expansion.

Oracle to acquire DataScience for centralized model development

Oracle agreed to acquire DataScience.com, whose platform centralizes data science tools, projects and infrastructure in a fully-governed workspace. Financial terms were not disclosed.

DataScience, which is based in Culver City, California, helps enterprises to organize work, easily access data and computing resources, and execute end-to-end model development workflows.

Oracle said it will use DataScience to provide customers with a single data science platform that leverages Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and the breadth of Oracle's integrated SaaS and PaaS offerings to help them realize the full potential of machine learning.

“Every organization is now exploring data science and machine learning as a key way to proactively develop competitive advantage, but the lack of comprehensive tooling and integrated machine learning capabilities can cause these projects to fall short,” said Amit Zavery, Executive Vice President of Oracle Cloud Platform, Oracle. “With the combination of Oracle and DataScience.com, customers will be able to harness a single data science platform to more effectively leverage machine learning and big data for predictive analysis and improved business results.”

Gigalight 100G optical modules pass cloud provider testing

Gigalight announced that its 100G series optical transceiver modules have passed the connectivity test of multiple cloud service providers.

The Gigalight 100G series products include 100G QSFP28 SR4 multi-mode VCSEL optical modules and 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 single-mode WDM optical modules.

The company notes that it ships a large number of 10G multimode and 10G single-mode optical modules and 40G multimode SR4 optical modules to the world.

In the field of 40G single-mode optical modules, Gigalight's main customers include global TIE1 equipment vendors. For 100G, the company says cloud service providers have directly verified its modules since the end of 2017.


Koo Bon-moo, chairman of LG Corporation, passes away

Koo Bon-moo, the chairman of LG Corporation, the fourth largest industrial group in Korea, has passed away. He was 73 and had been ill for about a year. Koo served as chairman since 1995. Under his helm, the global sales of appliances, displays, smartphones and batteries skyrocketed. The company changed its brand identity from Lucky Goldstar to LG. It also divested its semiconductor business (now SK Hynix), and it established a telecom division. 

Koo Kwang-mo (40), a senior official in LG Electronics and the adopted son of Koo Bon-moo, will take over the role of chairman. The Koo family and its charitable foundation are believed to control about 47% of the corporation.

Softbank implements Machine Learning in the RAN with Ericsson

SoftBank is using machine-learning software developed by Ericsson for advanced radio network design in the Tokai region. The service groups cells in clusters and takes statistics from cell overlapping and potential to use carrier aggregation between cells into account, thus reducing operational expenditure and improving network performance. The machine learning evaluates cell coverage overlap, signal strength and receive diversity. Big data analytics was applied to a cluster of 2000 radio cells and data was analyzed for the optimal configuration.

Ericsson’s centralized and elastic radio access network design is sold as a service and supports LTE networks. Ericsson says that compared to traditional network design methods, the ML approach cuts the lead time by 40 percent.

Ryo Manda, Radio Technology Section Manager at the Tokai Network Technology Department of SoftBank, says: “We applied Ericsson’s service on dense urban clusters with multi-band complexity in the Tokai region. The positive outcome exceeded our expectations and we are currently proceeding in other geographical areas with the same method and close cooperation with Ericsson.”

Peter Laurin, Head of Managed Services at Ericsson, says: “There is a huge potential for machine learning in the telecom industry and we have made significant investments in this technology. It is very exciting to see that the new methods have been successfully applied in SoftBank’s network. There is a strong demand for this type of solutions and deployments of this service to other tier-one operators in other regions are ongoing.”

Intel cites environmental gains in Corporate Responsibility Report

Intel highlighted environmental sustainability and social goals in its newly released 2017-2018 annual Corporate Responsibility Report.

Here are a few highlights from Intel's 66-page report:

  • Since 1998, Intel has invested more than $237 million in water conservation projects at its global facilities. Its efforts to date have saved around 60 billion gallons of water. In 2017, Intel began to make progress on its new goal to restore 100 percent of its global water use by 2025.
  • Intel remains on track to meet its 2020 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions goal to reduce direct GHG emissions by 10 percent on a per unit basis by 2020 from 2010 levels. Intel’s direct GHG emissions decreased 20 percent on an intensity basis from 2010 levels.
  • Since 2012, Intel has invested more than $185 million in approximately 2,000 energy conservation projects at its facilities worldwide, cumulatively resulting in savings of 3 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy and more than $400 million through the end of 2017.
  • For more than a decade, Intel has been one of the top voluntary corporate purchasers of green power in the U.S. EPA’s Green Power Partnership (GPP) program. Today, 100 percent of Intel’s U.S. and European power use and approximately 75 percent of its global power use are from renewable sources.
  • Intel has doubled the number of on-site renewable energy projects at its sites around the world since 2015, with installations in 15 countries/states using 19 different technology applications – from solar and wind, bio-energy and chemical/fuel cell technologies.
  • Intel remained on track to meet its goal to design all new buildings to a minimum LEED Gold certification through 2020, with its newest building in Bangalore, India, receiving LEED Platinum certification in 2017. That brings total LEED certified space to 15.4 million square feet in 46 buildings globally – roughly 25 percent of the company’s total operational space.
  • Intel achieved a recycling rate of 85 percent of its non-hazardous waste in 2017, and remained on track to achieve its goal of a 90 percent non-hazardous recycling rate by 2020. Intel is also on track to meet its 2020 goal of zero hazardous waste to landfill by 2020.

NTT employs Orbital Angular Momentum multiplexing for 100G wireless

NTT successfully demonstrated the first use of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) multiplexing to achieve 100 Gbps wireless transmission.

The laboratory tests combined OAM multiplexing with Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology and carried the signals a distance of 10m.

NTT said a key feature of OAM is that electromagnetic waves can be superposed and separated because phase rotation occurs on the vertical plane in the propagation direction.  An electromagnetic wave with phase rotation cannot be received without a receiver having the same number of phase rotations at the time of transmission. NTT developed a transceiver operating in the 28 GHz band capable of OAM transmission. NTT also developed signal processing technology capable of handling 11 data signals simultaneously each at a bit rate of 7.2 to 10.8 Gbps, thereby achieving large-capacity wireless transmission at a total bit rate of 100 Gbps.

NTT believes the technology holds promise for achieving large-capacity wireless transmission at a level about 100 times that of LTE and Wi-Fi and about 5 times that of 5G.

Google Cloud acquires Cask for big data ingestion on-ramp

Google Cloud will acquire Cask Data Inc., a start-up based in Palo Alto, California, that offers a big data platform for enterprises. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The open source Cask Data Application Platform (CDAP) provides a data ingestion service that simplifies and automates the task of building, running, and managing data pipelines. Cask says it cuts down the time to production for data applications and data lakes by 80%. The idea is to provide a standardization and simplification layer that allows data portability across diverse environments, usability across diverse groups of users, and the security and governance needed in the enterprise.

Google said it plans to continue to develop and release new versions of the open source Cask Data Application Platform (CDAP).

Deutsche Telekom pursues “billions for millions” broadband strategy

Deutsche Telekom invested 5.4 billion euros on networks and new data centers in Germany in the last year, he said.

Speaking at Deutsche Telekom's shareholders' meeting in Bonn, CEO Tim Höttges said the company is pursuing a strategy of “billions for millions,” seeking to ensure that broadband coverage is built out as quickly and as comprehensively as possible. The targets for the next stage of Deutsche Telekom's broadband strategy are to provide 26 million households with up to 100 Mbps, and 15 million households with as much as 250 Mbps, by the end of the year.

Deutsche Telekom holds a 40 percent market share in the broadband market in Germany.

Höttges also called for increased competition in Germany, saying that other companies must also invest in new networks, instead of simply criticizing or “staying cozy in regulated markets.” Höttges said that there should be no more regulation for “new fiber-optic lines,” in order to achieve the goal of nationwide access to gigabit speeds faster.” We are pleased to have competition, at any rate, because if it is fair, then it is good for the customer,” said Höttges.

In 2017, Deutsche Telekom's revenue increased by 2.5 percent year-on-year to 74.9 billion euros, with adjusted EBITDA rising by 3.8 percent to 22.2 billion euros. Free cash flow was up 11.3 percent to 5.5 billion euros.

Regarding the planned merger with Sprint, Höttges said the deal would create better networks, new jobs, increased growth, and stronger competition in the United States. “I personally have spent seven years working to make this merger happen. There have been many ups and downs, but there is no opportunity without risks – risks that must be taken if we are to open up new horizons. I am convinced that this business combination is the best thing for the U.S. market and for Deutsche Telekom – and that goes for the long term,” said Tim Höttges.

Deutsche Telekom will further discuss its medium-term planning at its Capital Markets Day on May 24/25.

Mellanox raises Q2 and full year 2018 outlook

Citing strength across all its product lines, including InfiniBand and Ethernet, Mellanox Technologies raised its second quarter and full year 2018 outlook.

Mellanox currently projects:

  • Quarterly revenues of $260 million to $270 million. Prior guidance provided on April 17, 2018 was quarterly revenues of $255 million to $265 million.
  • Full Year 2018 revenues of $1,050 million to $1,070 million. Prior guidance was revenues of $1,030 million to $1,050 million.

“We continue to see strength across all our product lines, including InfiniBand and Ethernet, and we are well-positioned for further growth as the adoption of 25 gigabit per second and above Ethernet adapters continues in 2018 and beyond,” said Eyal Waldman, Chief Executive Officer of Mellanox. “The team remains disciplined in its investments and committed to optimizing efficiencies and reducing expenses, without slowing down revenue growth. Tachyum announces its Universal Processor Platform

Tachyum, a start-up based in San Jose, California with offices in Slovakia, unveiled its new processor family – codenamed “Prodigy” – that combines the advantages of CPUs with GP-GPUs, and specialized AI chips in a single universal processor platform. The company says its processor architecture attains ten times the processing power per watt compared to conventional designs.

A key innovation of the design is the ability to connect very fast transistor with very slow wires, but technical details on the device physics have not yet been disclosed.

The universal processor promises programming ease comparable to a CPU with performance and efficiency comparable to GP-GPU. It is designed to handle hyperscale workloads, AI, HPC, and other demanding applications

Tachyum claims its Prodigy universal processor will enable a super-computational system for real-time full capacity human brain neural network simulation by 2020. One target application would be the real-time Human Brain Project, where there’s a need for more than 1019 Flops (10,000,000,000,000,000,000 floating-point operations per second - 10 exaflop).

Vesper raises $23M for its MEMS piezoelectric microphones

Vesper, a start-up based in Boston, announced $23 million in Series B funding for its MEMS-based piezoelectric sensors.

Vesper said its MEMS microphones represent a radical shift from capacitive MEMS microphones. Its piezoelectric design is suited for far-field applications such as microphone arrays used in voice-interface devices. The design is waterproof, dustproof, particle-resistant and shockproof.

"Our vision is for Alexa to be everywhere, and that means devices need to be built with durable, high-quality components that stand up to the demands of many different environments, especially on-the-go scenarios that require better power efficiency," said Paul Bernard, director of the Amazon Alexa Fund. "Vesper has become further embedded in the Alexa community through its integrations with various development kits and integrated solutions for Amazon AVS, and this follow-on investment is a testament to their continued momentum."

The funding round was led by American Family Ventures, a venture capital fund focused on seed to growth stage rounds. Vesper also received investments from Accomplice, Amazon Alexa Fund, Baidu, Bose Ventures, Hyperplane, Sands Capital, Shure, Synaptics, ZZ Capital and other undisclosed investors. The round brings Vesper's total funding to date to $40 million.
