Equinix ties in SAP Cloud

Equinix began offering direct and private access to the SAP Cloud portfolio, including SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud and SAP Cloud Platform, in multiple markets across the globe.

The dedicated, private connections are now available via Equinix Cloud Exchange and the SAP Cloud Peering service in the Equinix Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, New York, Silicon Valley, Sydney, Toronto and Washington, D.C. International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers, with additional markets planned for later this year.

In addition to SAP, Equinix offers dedicated access to AWS, Microsoft Azure, Oracle, Google Cloud Platform, and other leading cloud providers.

IBM says magnetic tape remains competitive for cold cloud storage

IBM announced a new world record for tape storage density: 201 Gb/in2 (gigabits per square inch) in areal density. This is more than 20 times the areal density used in current state of the art commercial tape drives such as the IBM TS1155 enterprise tape drive. IBM said this breakthrough enables the potential to record up to about 330 terabytes (TB) of uncompressed data* on a single tape cartridge that would fit in the palm of your hand.

The record was achieved on a prototype sputtered magnetic tape developed by Sony Storage Media Solutions.  IBM researchers developed several technologies to make this possible, including: new signal-processing algorithms for the data channel, based on noise-predictive detection principles; a set of advanced servo control technologies that when combined enable head positioning with an accuracy of better than 7 nanometers; a novel low friction tape head technology that permits the use of very smooth tape media.

IBM also noted that the potential exists to continue improving tape storage density at the current pace for many years to come.

“Tape has traditionally been used for video archives, back-up files, replicas for disaster recovery and retention of information on premise, but the industry is also expanding to off-premise applications in the cloud,” said IBM Fellow Evangelos Eleftheriou. “While sputtered tape is expected to cost a little more to manufacture than current commercial tape that uses Barium ferrite (BaFe), the potential for very high capacity will make the cost per TB very attractive, making this technology practical for cold storage in the cloud.”

Researchers at Brown University Test Terahertz Wireless Transmission

Researchers at Brown University achieved wireless throughput of 50 Gbps when transmitting video signals through a terahertz multiplexer. Results of the experiment were published in Nature Communications. Signals propagated as directional beams.

"We showed that we can transmit separate data streams on terahertz waves at very high speeds and with very low error rates,” said Daniel Mittleman, a professor in Brown’s School of Engineering and the paper’s corresponding author. “This is the first time anybody has characterized a terahertz multiplexing system using actual data, and our results show that our approach could be viable in future terahertz wireless networks.”

Backers of the research include the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Army Research Office, the W.M. Keck Foundation and France’s Agence Nationale de la Recherche under the COM’TONIQ and TERALINKS research grants.

Cylance reports 283% YoY revenue growth

Cylance, a privately held company that offers AI-powered cyber defense, reported the following metrics:

  • 283 percent growth in overall revenue
  • 119 percent growth in overall bookings
  • 169 percent growth in the number of customers
  • Over 5 million endpoints sold
  • 171 percent growth in deals
  • 100 percent growth in the number of OEM partnerships

Cylance also announced the appointment of Brian Robins as chief financial officer. Robins previously served as chief financial officer at AlienVault. Before that, he served as vice president and chief financial officer of Global Business Services at CSC, a multinational IT and professional services corporation. Earlier in his career, Robins was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Verisign.

Sprint clocks 28% improvement in average download speed

Sprint's national average download speeds have improved by 28 percent in seven months, according to Ookla Speedtest Intelligence data cited by the company.

Sprint now ranks #1 for the fastest average download speed in 15 cities, including Atlanta, Denver, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City and Seattle, according to the Ookla data.

Sprint also noted that Verizon and AT&T’s average speeds slowed due to their introduction of unlimited data plans

“We’ve been offering unlimited data for nearly 10 years and we have a long history managing customer demand which is why our speeds are improving while others have slowed,” Dr. John Saw, Sprint CTO. “Sprint also has far more spectrum capacity than any other U.S. carrier and our data performance and speeds continue to improve as we deploy more of our 2.5 GHz spectrum.”

NVIDIA Cits Growth in Data center, Auto

NVIDIA reported record revenue for its second quarter ended July 30, 2017, of $2.23 billion, up 56 percent from $1.43 billion a year earlier, and up 15 percent from $1.94 billion in the previous quarter. GAAP EPS was $0.92, up 124 percent from a year ago.
"Adoption of NVIDIA GPU computing is accelerating, driving growth across our businesses," said Jensen Huang, founder and chief executive officer of NVIDIA. "Datacenter revenue increased more than two and a half times. A growing number of car and robot-taxi companies are choosing our DRIVE PX self-driving computing platform. Nokia Bell Labs to lead 5G NGPaaS platform project

Nokia Bell Labs will lead a consortium of vendors, operators, IT companies, small and medium-sized enterprises and European academic institutions in the development over the next 2 years of the Next Generation Platform-as-a-Service (NGPaaS) for the 5G era.

The NGPaaS consortium is part of the 5G Infrastructure Public-Private Partnership (5G-PPP), launched in 2014 as an initiative between the European Union and telecoms industry.

Nokia noted that the cloud is transforming many industries and services, leading to the need for innovations to be cloud-native in order to be successful, which necessitates the adoption of a model beyond the current telco Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS): a Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) model.

Such a 5G cloud-native platform needs to offer two key features:

1.         To facilitate building, shipping and running of virtual network function (VNF) applications with telco-grade quality in terms of latency, reliability and capacity, in line with the requirements of 5G performance.
2.         The ability to combine all types of third-party applications with those VNFs to create more versatile and powerful cloud objects and break down silos between connectivity (for people, robots and sensors) and computing (machine learning, big data and video applications).

The NGPaaS consortium's goal is to enable adoption of the PaaS model to optimally support cloud-native 5G systems.

Industry and academic members of the consortium include: Nokia Bell Labs France; Nokia; ATOS (Spain); BT (UK); Orange (France); Virtual Open Systems (France); Vertical M2M (France); B-COM (France); ONAPP (UK); the University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy); Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU); and IMEC (Belgium).

Nokia Bell Labs has been a key player in 5G research and industry collaboration, and views PaaS as an essential platform for service providers seeking to leverage the carrier cloud as they evolve their networks. In addition to leading the NGPaaS consortium, Nokia Bell Labs is also cooperating with academic partners and is participating in events such as ICC, MWC, OpenStack Summit and OPNFV to support efforts to achieve this goal.


SK Telecom Develops 5G Repeater

SK Telecom has developed a 5G repeater that improves signals in blanket/shadow areas by amplifying 5G radio signals. The 5G repeater, which is currently in a field trial Gangnam Station in Seoul, could held reduce or elimiate shadow areas of network coverage.  It works by improving the propagation characteristics of radio signals at super-high/above-6GHz frequency bands.

SK Telecom said the Gangnam area in Seoul is one of the most difficult places to plan/build a network due to the presence of a large number of radio wave obstacles and high-density data traffic.

“SK Telecom is moving closer to launching a commercial 5G network by applying key 5G technologies to our 5G trial network in Gangnam, an area with the highest data traffic,” said Park Jin-hyo, Senior Vice President and Head of Network Technology R&D Center of SK Telecom.

New Automotive Edge Computing Consortium Gets Underway

A new Automotive Edge Computing Consortium is being organized with a mission to develop an ecosystem for connected cars to support emerging services such as intelligent driving, the creation of maps with real-time data and driving assistance based on cloud computing.

Founding members include DENSO, Ericsson, Intel, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), NTT DOCOMO, Toyota InfoTechnology Center Co., and Toyota Motor Corp.

The organizers said thet plan focus on increasing network capacity to accommodate automotive big data in a reasonable fashion between vehicles and the cloud by means of edge computing and more efficient network design.

The consortium will define requirements and develop use cases for emerging mobile devices with a particular focus on the automotive industry, bringing them to standards bodies, industry consortiums and solution providers. The consortium will also encourage the development of best practices for the distributed and layered computing approach recommended by the members.

Luna sells optical receivers business to MACOM for $29.5m

Luna Innovations, supplier of products for the aerospace, automotive, energy, defence and telecommunications markets, announced that MACOM Technology Solutions has agreed to buy the assets and operations related to its high-speed optical receivers (HSOR) business.

The purchase price includes $29.5 million to be paid in cash at closing and an additional $4.0 million to be held in escrow until December 15, 2018 for possible working capital adjustments to the purchase price and potential satisfaction of certain post-closing indemnification obligations.

The sale includes the operations associated with Luna’s development, manufacturing and sales of products including high-speed integrated coherent receivers and photodiodes. Luna originally acquired these operations as part of its merger with Advanced Photonix, Inc. (API), in May 2015. The assets and employees associated with Luna’s Terahertz operations are not being transferred as part of this transaction.

Through the transaction, employees associated with the company’s HSOR operations and administration in the company's location in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will transfer to MACOM. The Picometrix line of high-speed optical receivers and optical-to-electrical converters serve the global telecommunications, data centre and manufacturing testing industries.

Luna noted that it intends to use a portion of the proceeds from the transaction to invest in expanding its fibre optic sensing product offering.

Regarding the acquisition, John Croteau, MACOM president and CEO, said, "Similar to MACOM's high performance analogue and 25 Gbit/s laser products, Luna's high speed optical receiver products and technology are well-aligned with its previously-announced growth strategy in cloud data centres and other high-speed networking markets".



  • Earlier this year, Luna Innovations announced that its Picometrix unit had entered into a vendor managed inventory (VMI) agreement with a leading Chinese provider of telecoms equipment and network solutions, under which Picometrix was to maintain in Hong Kong a dedicated inventory of 100 Gbit/s integrated coherent receivers and other products. It also noted it had received a new order for coherent receivers for 100 Gbit/s transport network equipment valued at approximately $1.4 million.

F5 selects Anuta NCX intent-based orchestration

Silicon Valley-based Anuta Networks, a provider of network services orchestration solutions, announced that its NCX intent-based orchestration platform has been deployed within F5 Networks Silverline to automate network services.

The F5 Silverline DDoS Protection service is designed to keep customer businesses online when under DDoS attack with a reduced risk of downtime while providing enhanced visibility. To address the global demand and to offer on-demand provisioning, F5 Networks explored the use of network orchestration solutions.

Anuta NCX is a model-driven orchestration platform that enables devops for networking. The solution has been demonstrated with large enterprises and service providers to accelerate network services, reduce opex and support consistency among heterogeneous infrastructure. NCX enables orchestration of L2-L7 physical and virtual appliances from more than 35 vendors and features a comprehensive REST API to integrate with multiple northbound ticketing systems and OSS/BSS.

Anuta Networks enables multi-vendor network orchestration for branch, campus, data centre and service provider-managed enterprise networks. Its NCX network orchestration platform allows customers to automate and accelerate network services. NCX offers lifecycle service orchestration of physical, virtual and hybrid networks, allowing customers to leverage existing investments in infrastructure and transition to the software-defined networking (SDN)/network functions virtualisation (NFV) environments.

Commenting on the agreement, Mike Lechner, manager, product development for Silverline at F5 Networks, said, “When F5 explored multiple orchestration solutions, it evaluated based on breadth of multi-vendor coverage, scalability, support for open APIs, extensibility and multi-tenancy… Anuta's Yang model-based NCX platform allows applications to describe intent to the network without worrying about underlying physical infrastructure… NCX enabled its devops teams to focus on the service workflow instead of learning complex CLIs".


Israel's Partner Comm to expand fibre network nationwide

Partner Communications Company, an Israeli communications operator, announced that following a pilot stage it is commencing the commercial phase and accelerated roll-out of its fibre optic network.

Following the company's report of June 2016 covering the deployment of an independent fixed-line infrastructure based on fibre optics, Partner is announcing that over the past few months it has significantly increased its deployment of fibre infrastructure in multiple cities across the country. The company is estimated to have connected around 30,000 homes in 20 cities, mainly is the centre of Israel.

To date, the operator has reached tens of thousands of households as it expands the existing deployment that includes thousands of kilometres of fibre and a presence in business centres and a number of cities throughout the country. As part of the accelerated deployment plan, Partner intends to double its reach in terms of households passed by the end of the year.

Partner's investment in the fibre network is part of its strategy to maintain its position in the market. The fibre network is designed to enable the company to offer higher internet speeds in Israel as well as advanced services such as quality TV services. Partner Communications is a major provider in Israel of telecoms services including cellular, fixed-line telephony, Internet and TV.


Dell'Oro forecasts double-digit growth for 100 GBE ports

Dell’Oro Group finds in its latest Router & Carrier Ethernet Switch 5-year Forecast Report that worldwide demand for edge routers and Carrier Ethernet switches will drive modest growth in the overall service provider (SP) and Carrier Ethernet switch market over the period to 2021.

Dell'Oro notes that over the 5-year period the SP core router market is expected to decline slightly.

Highlights of Dell'Oro's router and Carrier Ethernet switch report include:

1.         The SP core router market will continue to grow in 2017 driven by demand in China, while from 2018 the market will decline as projects in China are completed and IP traffic patterns continue to shift to more localised data sources.

Tata teams with CoreSite to support enterprise digital transformation

NTT demos 118 Tbit/s transmission on multi-core fibre

NTT, together with six partners, KDDI Research, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Fujikura, Furukawa Electric, NEC and Chiba Institute of Technology (CIT), announced a demonstration of what is claimed as the highest transmission capacity of 118.5 Tbit/s using a multi-core fibre with four optical paths within the same diameter as currently used fibre.

NTT noted that a conventional glass diameter of 125 µm in accordance with the international standard enables the use of existing fibre fabrication and optical connector technologies. The demonstration is designed to validate the concept of multi-core fibre-based long-haul and high capacity transmission system comprising multiple vendor technologies and advance the application of multi-core fibre technology.

In the new fibre, 4-5 cores can be arranged within a 125 µm diameter while maintaining the same transmission quality as current optical fibre, with a 316 km multi-core transmission line realised with a 0.21 dB/km average loss, concatenating standard diameter multi-core fibre with 4 cores fabricated by multiple vendors.

As part of the new design, Sumitomo Electric, Fujikura and Furukawa each fabricated a multi-core fibre with 4 cores and more than 100 km length. All multi-core fibres can be used in the 1260 to 1625 nm wavelength region and provide similar transmission properties to current SMF with mode filed diameter at 1550 nm of 9-10 µm).

The fabricated multi-core fibres were divided into a 20-40 km sections and three transmission spans with a length of 104-107 km were re-constructed by splicing the multi-core fibres provided by different vendors. A satisfactory low loss comparable to conventional SMF was achieved, with average loss of four cores in each span 0.22 dB/km or less, including splicing losses.

In addition, three multi-core optical amplifiers fabricated by NEC, KDDI Research, NTT and Furukawa were inserted at each end of three spans to compensate the signal attenuation. Cladding pumping type multi-core optical amplifiers designed to reduce power consumption were used, enabling a 16% improvement in power usage.

To confirm the performance of the constructed multi-core transmission line to beyond 100 Tbit/s transmission, 16QAM-based 116-wavelength signals were prepared and the output signal quality over 316 km transmission was examined.

Additionally, Fan-In/Fan-Out devices developed by NTT and Furukawa were used to input/output signals to and from each core of the multi-core fibre. Pluggable optical connectors with existing MU-type or SC-type interfaces from CIT and NTT were used to connect the input/output end of the multi-core transmission lines and Fan-In/Fan-Out devices.

The work was partially based on work commissioned by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), and the companies stated that they aim to introduce the standard diameter multi-core fibre by the early 2020s. The achievement was reported in early August as a post deadline paper at the Opto Electronics and Communications Conference (OECC 2017) in Singapore.


GSMA report evaluates wholesale open access networks

The GSMA, which represents mobile operators worldwide, has announced the results of its new report, Wholesale Open Access Networks, which explores the performance of the wholesale open access network (WOAN) model (also termed single wholesale network, or SWN) in five markets worldwide, namely: Kenya, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda and South Africa.

The new report, which follows a previous 2014 study that assessed the potential economic case for the wholesale network model, found that in the five countries examined only one network was rolled out, in Rwanda, with deployments in the other markets hindered by slow progress and delayed or cancelled network launches.

The GSMA believes that the projects in these five countries can serve as examples for other countries considering this network rollout model, and highlight the challenges of implementing SWN/WOANs for regulators that view this as an alternative to traditional approaches to network deployment.

The association believes that a more effective path to delivering comprehensive network coverage is for governments, regulators and mobile operators to collaborate on long-term solutions, with the basic building blocks for enabling this as follows:

  • Cost effective access to low frequency spectrum.
  • Support for spectrum re-farming.
  • Support for all forms of voluntary infrastructure sharing.
  • The elimination of sector-specific taxation on operators, vendors and consumers.
  • Non-discriminatory access to public infrastructure.
  • Streamlined planning and administrative processes.
  • The relaxation of quality of service requirements.
  • A context-appropriate competition policy, particularly relating to market structure.
  • Support for multi-sided business models, such as zero rating and sponsored data.
The GSMA notes that for several decades, policymakers have favoured a competitive network structure with licensing of network usage to a limited number of competing mobile network operators, usually under private ownership. Through this approach, there has been rapid growth and development in mobile services, with more than 5 billion people currently connected globally, including 3.8 billion in developing countries, and providing access to tools and applications that can potentially help to address a range of socioeconomic challenges.

To continue to expand network coverage, mobile operators are now evaluating ways to balance competition with cooperation in terms of infrastructure investment by entering voluntarily into infrastructure sharing agreements. Operators are also exploring new business models with third parties that will enable sharing of the cost and risk of investment in networks in rural and remote locations.

The GSMA believes that the benefits of network competition go beyond coverage, with innovation a key factor in delivering consumer value at the national level, and noted that this occurs where there is competition amongst networks, as well as in the delivery of services and the launch of devices in a market.

Germany's 1&1 Versatel selects Coriant mTera for national backbone

Coriant announced that 1&1 Versatel, a major provider of data, Internet and voice services in Germany, has deployed the Coriant mTera universal switching and transport solution to increase the capacity and enhance the bandwidth management capabilities of its nationwide high-speed optical backbone network.

The Coriant solution, which includes advanced OTN switching and end-to-end network management functionality, is designed to enable 1&1 Versatel to cost-effectively meet increasing customer demand for network bandwidth while enhancing service delivery across the country.

The 1&1 Versatel high-capacity national fibre backbone network extends over more than 42,000 km, the second largest network in Germany, and supports a range of business and residential communications services via support for high-speed data transfer at speeds of up to 100 Gbit/s, upgradeable to 200 Gbit/s.

To maximise utilisation of its fibre assets and enhance the resiliency, scalability and flexibility of its broadband services, 1&1 Versatel has deployed Coriant's mTera platform in major backbone sites across Germany, and is currently extending the deployment to its regional fibre networks.

Designed to enable network modernisation, the Coriant mTera solution will enable 1&1 Versatel to aggregate, groom and transport diverse traffic types, while supporting the cost-effective migration of legacy traffic, including SDH. mTera is a flexible multi-service transport solution that offers support for software-defined universal switching, including OTN, Carrier Ethernet, MPLS-TP and SONET/SDH in a single system architecture.

The mTera platform supports 7 Tbit/s of universal switching capacity per shelf, with up to 12 Tbit/s of total switching capacity per rack.

In addition, provisioning and management of service capacity in 1&1 Versatel's backbone will be provided by the Coriant Transport Network Management System (TNMS), which helps to reduce operating expenses and improve service resiliency leveraging end-to-end network control, automated provisioning features and advanced planning capabilities.

Imagine to deploy Huawei WTTx broadband in rural Ireland

Huawei and Imagine Communications Group, a service provider based in Dublin, Ireland, have announced the formation of a strategic partnership under which Ireland will become the first country to see the deployment of a national wireless-to the-x (WTTx) network.

Utilising the latest released LTE technologies optimised to provide a fixed access network, Imagine will use Huawei's WTTx solution to deliver superfast broadband offering speeds of 200 Mbit/s and higher across Ireland to help address the digital divide between urban and rural areas.

Leveraging the latest 4.5G technologies including massive MIMO and massive Carrier Aggregation (CA), the solution is capable of delivering a downlink speed of over 1 Gbit/s, as well as providing a roadmap to 5G, using advanced CPE to connect premises to a fibre link at a mobile mast is faster.

Huawei noted that deployment of the technology has significantly lower cost compared to conventional fibre access solutions, with WTTx emerging as a strategic alternative to FTTx infrastructure for quickly extending high speed broadband availability.

Huawei added that Ireland is a country where there is a significant difference between urban and rural areas in term of network infrastructure. While in urban areas cable availability offers an alternative to limited FTTx networks, it often fails to meet the advertised speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s, and cannot meet demand for above 100 Mbit/s services. In addition, around 61% of the market in regional and rural areas is served with xDSL services delivering speeds as low as 3 Mbit/s.

Ireland initiated a national broadband plan in 2012 designed to make 30 Mbit/s broadband services available to every home by 2020. With FTTP as the only alternative and the difficulties and high cost of deploying FTTP, to date only an estimated 12,000 premises have been connected.

Huawei stated that in a limited commercial trial of the Imagine LTE fixed wireless access network in selected rural areas which offers 70 Mbit/s service, 16,000 customers have been connected, while over 100,000 customers have applied for the service. With the 3.6 GHz 5G licenses secured in the recent spectrum award, Imagine aims to be the first operator to provide 100 Mbit/s-plus services in rural areas.


Imagine plans to commence the rollout of its WTTx network in October this year, with the objective of achieving 85% market coverage by 2019.

California's CENIC extends fibre lease with Level 3 to 2040

CENIC (Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California), the organisation that provides global connectivity for education and research institutions in California, announced an agreement to extend its fibre leases, called indefeasible rights of use (IRUs), with Level 3 Communications on more than 8,000 miles of dark fibre until 2040.
Through the collaboration, Level 3 provides CENIC with access to its extensive fibre network to serve the organisation's 11,000-member institutions, including universities, schools, libraries and other cultural, scientific and arts organisations across California.

Regarding the renewed lease agreement, Louis Fox, president and CEO of CENIC, noted, "CENIC's next generation terabit network, CENIC 2.0, will have even greater user control and visibility, automation and software capacities for security, computation, and storage".



  • In December 2016, the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Division (UC ANR) and CENIC announced they had connected key UC ANR facilities to CENIC's 100 Gbit/s research and education network, extending ultra-broadband capacity to UC researchers in rural sites across California.
  • UC ANR operates nine Research and Extension Centers (RECS), plus 57 local UC Cooperative Extension offices, in locations ranging from the Oregon border in the north, through the Sierra foothills and Central Valley, along the Pacific Coast and south to the Mexican border.
  • CENIC is a non-profit organisation that operates the California Research and Education Network (CalREN) high-capacity network that connects over 20 million users, including most K-20 students, with educators, researchers and other public institutions. It also provides connectivity to leading institutions and industry research organisations worldwide.
