Forecast for 2017? Cloudy

In 2016, IT professionals saw major shifts in the cloud computing industry, from developing more sophisticated approaches to application delivery to discovering the vulnerabilities of connected IoT devices. Enterprises continue to face increasing and entirely new security threats and availability challenges as they migrate to private, public and multi-cloud systems, which is causing organizations to rethink their infrastructures. As we inch toward the end of the year, F5 Networks predicts the key changes we can expect to see in the cloud computing landscape in 2017.

IT’s  MVP of 2017? Cloud architects 

With more enterprises adopting diverse cloud solutions, the role of cloud architects will become increasingly important. The IT professionals that will hold the most valuable positions in an IT organization are those with skills to define criteria for and manage complex cloud architectures.

Multi-cloud is the new normal in 2017

Over the next year, enterprises will continue to seek ways to avoid public cloud lock-in, relying on multi-cloud strategies to do so. They will aim to regain leverage over cloud providers, moving toward a model where they can pick and choose various services from multiple providers that are most optimal to their business needs.

Organizations will finally realize the full potential of the cloud

Companies are now understanding they can use the cloud for more than just finding efficiency and cost savings as part of their existing strategies and ways of doing business. 2017 will provide a tipping point for companies to invest in the cloud to enable entirely new scenarios, spurred by things like big data and machine learning that will transform how they do business in the future.

The increasing sophistication of cyber attacks will be put more emphasis on private cloud
While enterprises trust public cloud providers to host many of their apps, the lack of visibility into the data generated by those apps causes concerns about security. This means more enterprises will look to private cloud solutions. Public cloud deployments won’t be able to truly accelerate until companies feel comfortable enough with consistency of security policy and identity management.

More devices – More problems: In 2017,  public cloud will become too expensive for IoT 

Businesses typically think of public cloud as the cheaper business solution for their data center needs, yet they often forget that things like bandwidth and security services come at an extra cost. IoT devices generate vast amounts of data and as sensors are installed into more and more places, this data will continue to grow exponentially. This year, enterprises will put more IoT applications in their private clouds, that is, until public cloud providers develop economical solutions to manage the huge amounts of data these apps produce.

The conversation around apps will finally go beyond the “where?”

IT professionals constantly underestimate the cost, time and pain of stretching solutions up or down the stack. We’ve seen this with OpenStack, and we’ll see it with Docker. This year, cloud migration and containers will reach a point that customers won’t be able to just think about where they want to move apps, they’ll need to think about the identity tools needed for secure authentication and authorization, how to protect and prevent data loss from microservices and SaaS apps; and how to collect and analyze data across all infrastructure services quickly.

A new standard for cloud providers is in motion and this year will see major developments in not only reconsidering the value of enterprise cloud, but also modifying cloud strategy to fully extend enterprise offerings and data security. Evaluating the risks of cloud migration and management has never been as vital to a company’s stability as it is now. Over the course of the year, IT leaders who embrace and adapt to these industry shifts will be the ones to reap the benefits of a secure, cost-effective and reliable cloud.

Trend Micro Intros Next Gen TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention Systems

Trend Micro released its TippingPoint NX Series Next-Generation Intrusion Prevention Systems (NGIPS), including a first-to-market standalone NGIPS solution that delivers up to 100 Gb inspection throughput with low latency.

The new TippingPoint 7600NX intrusion prevention system is designed to protect data centers and enterprise networks in real-time from known, undisclosed and unknown vulnerabilities without adversely affecting network performance.

“Customers with high traffic environments require a solution that can operate seamlessly and help prioritize the threats they need to focus on first,” said Don Closser, vice president and general manager for Trend Micro TippingPoint. “Our 100 Gb solution’s superior performance as well as exclusive insight into undisclosed vulnerability data through our Zero Day Initiative program provides them real-time, accurate threat prevention between vulnerability discovery and patch availability.”

Yahoo to Change Name to Altaba, CEO Bows Out

Yahoo will change its name to Altaba following the close of its acquisition by Verizon.

Marissa Mayer will step down from the company's Board of Directors upon closing of the deal. David Filo, Eddy Hartenstein, Richard Hill, Jane Shaw and Maynard Webb will also resign from the Board.

No timeline was given for completion of the sale.

Yahoo! -- One Billion Accounts Compromised

Yahoo! confirmed that hackers stole data and compromised more than one billion user accounts in August 2013. The exploit was first disclosed by Yahoo! in November and is most likely different from incident disclosed on September 22, 2016.

Separately, Yahoo previously disclosed that its outside forensic experts were investigating the creation of forged cookies that could allow an intruder to access users' accounts without a password. Based on the ongoing investigation, the company believes an unauthorized third party accessed the company's proprietary code to learn how to forge cookies. The outside forensic experts have identified user accounts for which they believe forged cookies were taken or used. Yahoo is notifying the affected account holders, and has invalidated the forged cookies. The company has connected some of this activity to the same state-sponsored actor believed to be responsible for the data theft the company disclosed on September 22, 2016.

Yahoo Cites State Actor for Massive Security Breach

Yahoo believes a state-sponsored actor breached its network in late 2014 and may have stole names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (the vast majority with bcrypt) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers from at least 500 million accounts.

Yahoo said its ongoing investigation suggests that stolen information did not include unprotected passwords, payment card data, or bank account information.

Verizon Confirms $4.8 Billion Acquisition of Yahoo

Verizon confirmed a deal to acquire Yahoo for $4.8 billion in cash. The deal does not include Yahoo’s cash, its shares in Alibaba Group Holdings, its shares in Yahoo Japan, Yahoo’s convertible notes, certain minority investments, and Yahoo’s non-core patents (called the Excalibur portfolio). Yahoo will remain a registered, publicly traded investment company holding these assets, and will change its name once the deal closes.

Yahoo, which was founded in 1994 and is based in Sunnyvale, California, remains one the most visited news and media website, with over 7 billion views per month, along with leading web services with email, sports, etc..

Yahoo claims 600 million monthly active users. Yahoo's email service has 225 million monthly active users.

Verizon said the acquisition, combined with its AOL property, gives its more than 25 digital content/service brands in areas ranging from sports and entertainment news to online information services.

GTT Completes Acquisition of Hibernia Networks

GTT Communications completed its previously announced acquisition of Hibernia Networks.

The acquisition delivers the following assets:

  • Five subsea cables, including Hibernia Express, the lowest latency transatlantic cable system, and eight cable landing stations
  • New global points of presence, expanding GTT’s Tier 1 IP network to over 300 in total
  • Optical and low latency transport, video and CDN services
  • Key relationships with marquee clients, specifically within the financial services, media and entertainment, web-centric and service provider segments

New Hibernia Express Cable Timed at Record 58.95ms Latency for NY-London

The new Hibernia Express transatlantic cable is delivering an actual tested latency of better than 58.95ms (milliseconds) from New York to London, which is faster by more than half a millisecond off the original projected speed.

Hibernia Networks said its new undersea cable has undergone rigorous testing over the past two weeks. Testing parameters included power stability, spectral efficiency and latency. The results confirmed the latency on Hibernia Express from LD4 in Slough, England to NY4 in Secaucus, New Jersey to be under 58.95ms.

  • Hibernia Express utilizes a 6-fiber-pair submarine cable, with a portion of the fibers optimized for lowest latency and a portion optimized for 100X100 Gpbs design capacity. The total cross-sectional design capacity of the cable will be over 53 Tbps. Hibernia Express will initially launch with 100 Gbps transmission capacity using TE SubCom’s C100 SLTE platform. Hibernia Express follows the most direct route between the UK and North America, promising to reduce latency by at least 5 milliseconds over existing cables.

Ericsson and Cisco to Deliver IP Upgrade for Telefonica Guatemala

Ericsson and Cisco will provide Telefonica Guatemala with a new IP backbone based on Cisco’s aggregation services routers (ASR 9010 and ASR 1001) and Ericsson’s integration services. The solution, which includes Ericsson’s implementation and integration services, as well as Cisco® routers , will expand Telefonica Guatemala’s current network backbone. It will support new capacity and features, including Ethernet services, VPNs, and IPv6. The network modernization also paves the way for future network requirements based on Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and cloud implementations. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Citrix Acquires Unidesk for Windows Application Layering

Citrix has acquired Unidesk, which developed a Windows application packaging and management technology known as layering. Financial terms were not disclosed. Unidesk is based in Marlborough, MA.

Unidesk makes it easier to deploy and manage apps and desktops through Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop. Unidesk offers full-stack layering technology, which enhances compatibility by layering the entire Windows workspace as modular virtual disks, including the Windows operating system itself (OS layer), apps (app layers), and a writable persistent layer that captures all user settings, apps, and data.

Citrix said application layering has emerged as the best way to separate apps from the underlying operating system, so they can be managed once and delivered from any end user computing solution to any device.

“Unidesk has been recognized by customers and industry analysts as the clear leader in application layering, offering multiple unique advantages that streamline secure app delivery and VDI deployments and make them easier to manage,” said Jeroen van Rotterdam, senior vice president of Engineering at Citrix. “By incorporating Unidesk technology into XenApp and XenDesktop, Citrix advances its industry leadership by offering the most powerful and easy to deploy application layering solution available for delivering and managing app and desktops in the cloud, on-premises and in hybrid deployment environments.”

Citrix will continue to sell Unidesk as a standalone product for VMware Horizon and Microsoft virtual desktop deployment customers.

CenturyLink Acquires SEAL Consulting for SAP Services

CenturyLink has acquired SEAL Consulting, Inc., a leading SAP solutions provider for enterprise-wide business and technology needs. Financial terms were not disclosed.

CenturyLink said the deal enhances its application transformation capabilities and expands CenturyLink's commitment to the SAP ecosystem and to providing integrated application/infrastructure solutions.

Wi-Fi Trends Take Center Stage in 2017

From an unprecedented DNS outage that temporarily paralyzed the entire internet, to the evolution of federated identity for simple, secure access to Wi-Fi and applications, 2016 had its mix of growing pains and innovative steps forward.

Here’s why 2017 will shape up into an interesting year for Wi-Fi technology.

IoT will create continued security issues on global networks

In 2017, the growth of IoT will put enormous pressure on Wi-Fi networks. While vendors must address the complexity of onboarding these devices onto their network, security can’t get left behind. The proliferation of IoT devices will propel high density into almost all locations – from coffee shops to living rooms – prompting more performance and security concerns. Whether Wi-Fi connected alarms or smart refrigerators, the security of our homes will be scrutinized and will become a key concern in 2017. Mass production of IoT devices will make them more susceptible to hacking, as they will not be equipped with the proper built in security.

The recent IoT-based attack on DNS provider Dyn opened the floodgates, as estimates show the IoT market reaching 10 billion devices by 2020. The event foreshadows the power hackers hold when invading these IoT systems. Taking down a significant portion of the internet grows more detrimental, yet all too plausible these days. Because of increased security concerns, vendors will equip devices with the ability to only connect to the IoT server over pre-designed ports and protocols. If IoT vendors don’t start putting security at the forefront of product development, we can only expect more large-scale cyberattacks in 2017.

LTE networks won’t impact Wi-Fi usage

Don’t expect LTE networks to replace Wi-Fi. The cost of deploying LTE networks is ten times greater and LTE is less adaptable for indoor environments than Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi will remain the lowest cost technology available with similar or superior performance to LTE when deployed properly and therefore will not be replaced by LTE. When people have access to Wi-Fi, they’ll connect. Data plan limitations remain too common.

Additionally, the FCC and other international government agencies began licensing the 5GHz spectrum to offer free and uncharted access to Wi-Fi. But, we don’t want carriers grabbing free spectrum and charging us for every byte we send, now do we?

LTE and Wi-Fi will co-exist as they do today, where LTE works well outdoors and Wi-Fi well-designed to work consistently throughout internal spaces.

The push toward federated identity will continue in 2017

Today, there remains a disparate number of Wi-Fi networks, all with different authentication requirements. This marks an opportunity for Wi-Fi vendors. In the coming year, we will see federated identity become a primary differentiator. By implementing federated identity, vendors simplify and secure the login process. Consumers can auto-connect to any public Wi-Fi network with their existing credentials – whether Google, Microsoft or Facebook – thus providing them with a seamless onboarding experience. It’s the next step for Single Sign-On (SSO), and one that will set Wi-Fi vendors apart in 2017.

This coming year, the repercussions of IoT, coexistence of LTE and Wi-Fi, and demand for simple, secure access to Wi-Fi, will take center stage. The onus falls on company leaders, who must adapt their business strategies so they can keep pace with the fast and ever-changing Wi-Fi landscape. 2017 will have plenty in store.

Bitglass Raises $45 Million for Cloud Access Security Broker

Bitglass, a start-up based in Campbell, California, raised $45 million in series C funding for its Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) solution.

In addition to new investor Future Fund, existing investors NEA, Norwest, Singtel Innov8 and others participated ratably. The round brings Bitglass’ total funding to $80 million. Bitglass will use the investment to fuel its global expansion in the U.S., EMEA and APAC regions.

"Bitglass uniquely delivers real-time inline data protection in the cloud, at access, and on any device.  This funding is testimony to our strong position in the market and fiscal health."

OVH Plans UK Data Centres

OVH is building its first UK data centre in the inner suburbs of London. The new facility, with a capacity of 40,000 servers is expected to be operational by the end of May 2017. It will be interconnected to OVH’s point of presence in London through a double fibre path, creating redundancy. Its proximity to two substations makes it possible to provide a high electrical capacity on site.

OVH said the first data centre will be less than  half a millisecond in latency from OVH’s point of presence (PoP) in London. The facility benefits from a direct connection to its datacenters in Gravelines (then Roubaix and Paris), Amsterdam (then Brussels and Frankfurt), Montreal, and New York, through the fibre network that the OVH group has deployed worldwide to allow the lowest latency possible.

OVH is planning two additional data centres in the United Kingdom: the second site on the outskirts of London, and a third one that is sufficiently remote to be a recovery site outside the failure domain of the two other sites. These three datacenters will be interconnected, like the other datacenters of the group, through the vRack, a private network developed by OVH to facilitate the deployment of multisite infrastructures.

Rosenworcel Reappointed to the FCC

President Obama reappointed Jessica Rosenworcel to serve a second term on as commissioner at the FCC.

Jessica Rosenworcel replaced long-term FCC Commissioner Michael Copps when his term ended in December 2011. She previously was the Senior Communications Counsel for the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Before that, she worked for Senator Jay Rockefeller IV, and at the FCC from 1999 to 2007, serving as Legal Advisor and then Senior Legal Advisor to Commissioner Michael J. Copps (2003-2007), Legal Counsel to the Bureau Chief of the Wireline Competition Bureau (2002-2003), and as an Attorney-Advisor in the Policy Division of the Common Carrier Bureau (1999-2002). She holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a J.D. from New York University School of Law.

Cisco and Ericsson Extend Partnership to Wi-Fi

Ericsson and Cisco are extending their strategic partnership to include a new Wi-Fi solution n0amed Evolved Wi-Fi Networks (EWN).

The joint offering combines Ericsson's 3GPP access, core networks and applications with Cisco's Wi-Fi portfolio, to provide reliable Wi-Fi with the highest performance to Ericsson's mobile, cable and other industries customers. The design and deployment will be handled by Ericsson's services organization, with full product support from Cisco. EWN can be offered as a fully managed service with the global reach of more than 180 countries.

Highlights include:

  • Indoor Small Cells - Combining indoor Ericsson access networks with Cisco® WLAN enables deployment in venues of both Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity.
  • Operator Wi-Fi - Allowing operators who have outdoor Ericsson access networks to use Cisco WLAN to offer access to their subscribers.
  • Traffic Steering - Integrating Cisco WLAN with either Ericsson macro or indoor access networks via Ericsson's unique Real Time Traffic Steering feature enables operators to steer users between mobile and Wi-Fi access networks, ensuring the best end-user experience.
  • Core Network Integration - Integrating Cisco WLAN into Ericsson packet core using trusted configurations will allow operators to offer all their core network services over Wi-Fi for multimode devices. Comcast Announces Multi-Platform, Direct-to-Consumer Solution for OTT Providers

Comcast Technology Solutions, which is a division of Comcast Cable, has expanded its direct-to-consumer (D2C) solution to help content providers build, launch, and manage over-the-top (OTT) experiences.

The expanded D2C solution offers video processing, management, multi-CDN distribution, and playout capabilities, as well as a powerful out-of-the box suite of monetization options spanning subscription management, promotion, storefront enablement, and billing. The solution is built with an innovative UX integration layer that allows UX providers to easily develop pre-integrated multi-platform application templates for maximum speed and flexibility.

Comcast Technology said its turnkey solution supports a variety of monetization models, with maximum flexibility and simplified pricing for enterprise customers.

Intel Announces Global 5G Modem

Intel will begin sampling a 5G modem in the second half of 2017. The device will be capable of delivering 5G in both sub-6 GHz bands and mmWave spectrum in regions worldwide – including the United States, Europe, Korea and Japan

The modem’s baseband chip pairs with a new 5G transceiver that enables both sub-6 Ghz and mmWave capabilities. The chipset incorporates key 3GPP 5G NR (new radio) technology – including low latency frame structures, advanced channel coding and massive MIMO – to deliver faster connectivity and ultra-responsiveness.

Intel said its goal is to support both early trials and to lay a foundation enabling accelerated development of products that will support the 3GPP NR specification and help drive global adoption of the 3GPP 5G standard.

WD Debuts PCIe NVMe-based SSDs

Western Digital introduced a branded, performance PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe-based SSD that delivers more than three times the sequential read speeds of current SATA SSDs.

The WD Black PCIe SSDs will be available in 256GB and 512GB capacities in a single-sided M.2 2280 form factor. The WD Black PCIe SSD boasts up to 2050MB/s and 800MB/s sequential read and write speeds, making it ideal as a boot drive when paired with a high-capacity hard drive, or as primary storage when building a future-ready PC. The company said its new WD Black PCIe SSD delivers more than three times the sequential read performance of SATA SSDs, an industry-leading 1.75M hours MTTF, and WD Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T.) Lab certification.

SanDisk Intros 256GB Ultra microSD Card

Western Digital's SanDisk division introduced the first microSD card that meets the Application Performance Class 1 (A1) requirements from the latest SD Association’s SD 5.1 specifications. The 256GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card can hold up to 24 hours of Full HD video and with premium transfer speeds of up to 95MB/s.

The A1 spec allows the new card to manage random read input-output access per second (IOPS) of 1,500 and write IOPS of 500, so it can quickly open apps and process accompanying tasks, such as audio, graphics, saved profiles and in-app permissions. With this in mind, the new SanDisk Ultra microSD card with A1 is designed to provide consumers a faster, more powerful app experience using cards.

Infinera Xceed Software Suite Powered by OpenDaylight

Infinera announced that its Xceed Software Suite is the first optical transport software-defined networking (SDN) solution to join the “Powered by OpenDaylight” program.

The OpenDaylight Project (ODL) is a collaborative open source project that aims to accelerate the adoption of SDN and network functions virtualization. The Powered by OpenDaylight program signals compliance with exceptional technical standards and quality for commercial products or services based on ODL. Xceed offers a portfolio of open and modular components for SDN programmability and automation of multi-layer transport networks.

“The Powered by OpenDaylight program makes it easy for end users to identify solutions that leverage the most critical components of the ODL platform without alteration,” said Neela Jacques, Executive Director of OpenDaylight. “The Infinera Xceed Software Suite is the first optical transport network solution to receive this recognition.
