ADTRAN Develops Frequency Division Vectoring

ADTRAN introduced a Frequency Division Vectoring (FDV) technology that enhances the capabilities of both G.fast and VDSL2 vectoring by enabling them to better coexist by working in tandem across a single subscriber line in the service provider’s network. The company said its patent-pending FDV doubles data rates and increases the reach of intermediate-rate services – between 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps – allowing the delivery of cost-effective premium broadband to 80% more subscribers.

FDV expands the addressable market for G.fast by broadening its applicability from Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB) and Fiber-to-the-distribution points (FTTdp) out to existing street cabinet sites.

“While G.fast and VDSL2 have always been seen as complementary technologies, the limitations of G.fast have been exposed when forced to operate in a VDSL2-compatible mode at higher rates,” said Jeff Heynen, principal analyst, broadband access and pay TV, Infonetics. “As service providers look to build out their G.fast adoption strategies, ADTRAN’s FDV technology has a key performance impact by allowing G.fast and vectored VDSL2 technologies to work in concert to boost performance. Huawei Signs 100th Contract for NE5000E 400G Core Router

Signalling its continued expansion in the core routing market, Huawei announced its 100th contract for its NE5000E 400G core router deployment on an IP backbone network. The platform was commercially launched in August 2013. It is now deployed in some 37 countries on five continents. Huawei said the system has operated fault free for over one year on these multiple networks.

In August 2013, Huawei deployed the industry's first 400G IP backbone network for Mobily in Saudi Arabia. Over the past year, a growing number of leading operators, such as MegaFon Russia, Jazztel Spain, True and DTAC in Thailand, Etisalat UAE, as well as China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, have deployed the 400G router.

Key features of the Huawei NE5000E-based platform include its acceptance of three generations of service boards: 100G, 400G, and 1T. The system capacity can be smoothly upgraded from 3.2 Tbps to 32 Tbps and the super 2+8 router cluster system can achieve a capacity of up to 128 Tbps.  The NE5000E 400G router has passed testing certification from the European Advanced Network Test Center (EANTC).

Empirix Acquires Verios for Mobile Analytics

Empirix has acquired Verios Software & Systems, a privately-held company specializing in real-time analytics, for an undisclosed sum.

Based in Dublin, Ireland, Verios takes a “Big Data” analytic approach to managing the increasingly complex radio access network environment. Unlike conventional radio access network management solutions that only sample customer segments, the Verios Vision Platform is designed to provide customer-level detail in high-volume distributed networks in real time. The company was founded in 2009 by Gerard Carroll, Mike Manchip and David O’Loghlin.

Empirix said it plans to integrate the Verios solution with its own analytical, troubleshooting, monitoring and management capabilities to give wireless providers unprecedented capabilities for managing their networks from their customers’ perspectives.

“The radio access network is a vital, expensive and often unpredictable link in the mobile network. Verios provides insight that enables network operators to enhance service levels and predictability of service for their customers,” said Empirix CEO John D’Anna. “Verios’ solution provides complete visibility into radio access network operations, down to the individual user. Hosted Private Cloud Options Are Now Listed in OpenStack Marketplace

A public listing of Hosted Private Cloud vendors and services is now available from the OpenStack Foundation on its OpenStack Marketplace comparison.

The new Hosted Private Cloud Marketplace category includes detailed information about offerings from Aptira, AURO, Blue Box, IBM, DataCentred, Metacloud, Mirantis, Morphlabs, Rackspace and UnitedStack. All products and services must meet specific technical requirements and be transparent with product information, such as OpenStack versions and capabilities supported.

The OpenStack Foundation said the Hosted Private Cloud offerings based on OpenStack are an attractive model for several reasons:

  • Low barrier to entry with little to no upfront capital expenditure
  • Deployment speeds that are comparable to public cloud provisioning
  • Control over physical infrastructure location, isolated hardware, and policies to meet data sovereignty and security requirements
  • Minimal responsibility for operating the physical infrastructure and operational aspects such as cloud software upgrades, driver updates, scale out management, etc.

LeaseWeb Launches Flat Fee Private Cloud in Frankfurt

Amsterdam-based LeaseWeb, one of the world’s largest hosting brands, introduced a private cloud hosting platform powered by Apache CloudStack and served from its data center in Frankfurt, Germany.

The service offers flat fee user access to dedicated pools of cloud resources and meeting compliance and data-integrity requirements for Germany. The service is based on CloudStack open source technology and allow users to create and manage multiple instances, and assign dedicated cloud resources such as dedicated cores, RAM storage, virtual networks, firewalls, and load balancers. The company offers similar flat-fee, private cloud resource in its home market in Holland and in the U.S.
The three private cloud platforms are wholly independent from each other.

Intel to Acquire LSI's Axxia Networking Business from Avago

Intel to acquire LSI's Axxia Networking Business and related assets for $650 million in cash from Avago Technologies.

The Axxia Networking Business generated revenues of $113 million in calendar 2013 and employs approximately 650 people.

The sale follows Avago Technologies acquisition of LSI earlier this year in a deal valued at $6.6 billion

In November 2013, LSI announced first commercial delivery of its Axxia 4500 family of communication processors for enterprise and data center networking applications such as evolving application aware networking.

LSI's Axxia 4500, which is the company's first ARM technology-based communication processor, features a new "StreamSight" next-generation Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) engine that provides improved Software-Defined Networks (SDN) controller traffic inspection, efficiency of network management, QoS, security and other network functions. The Axxia 4500 processors combine LSI's acceleration engines with up to four ARM Cortex-A15 cores with a CoreLink CCN-504 coherent, QoS aware interconnect in 28nm process technology. The processors also include up to 100 Gbps of L2 switching functionality.

The company said that by combining its Ethernet switches, networking accelerators and "Virtual Pipeline" technology with power-efficient ARM cores, its new Axxia 4500 can address the performance challenges facing next-generation networks. Customers using the Axxia 4500 are able to solve the control plane scalability challenges of SDN and extract the necessary information required to enable Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) implementations without burdening the server processor.

In 2013, LSI introduced its ARM-based family of Axxia 5500 processors designed for multi-radio LTE base stations, cell site routers, gateways and mobile backhaul equipment.

The new processors combine up to 16 ARM Cortex-A15 cores with LSI specialized networking accelerators to optimize performance and power efficiency.  On-chip network accelerators deliver up to 50 Gbps packet processing, 20 Gbps security processing and 160 Gbps of Ethernet switching via 16 10G Ethernet interfaces. LSI plans to offer several versions with different core counts and throughput capabilities.  The chip design leverages ARM’s CoreLink CCN-504 low-latency interconnect in 28nm process technology.

LSI said its combination of networking expertise, specialized acceleration engines and Virtual Pipeline technology with ARM’s power-efficient processors and interconnect IP delivers communication processors that are uniquely suited for building intelligent, heterogeneous networks.

Anite Achieves 300 Mbps LTE-A with 3 Carrier Aggregation

Anite, which develops wireless equipment testing technology, has achieved a peak data rate of 300 Mbps with 40 MHz bandwidth using three Component Carrier Aggregation ("3 CC CA").

Three carriers with downlink bandwidths of 20 MHz, 10 MHz and 10 MHz were used to achieve the 300 Mbps (Category 6) on Anite's Development Toolset.  Anite said the milestone was achieved in collaboration with a leading mobile chipset manufacturer.

Anite expects that aggregation of three Component Carriers - with 20 MHz bandwidth each - will achieve downlink data rates to end-users of up to 450 Mbps.

DigitalGlobe's WorldView-3 Reaches Orbit with .31m Resolution

WorldView-3, DigitalGlobe's sixth and most advanced super-spectral, high-resolution commercial satellite, was successfully launched into orbit aboard a Lockheed Martin Atlas V rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

WorldView-3 will collect super-spectral imagery at 0.31 meter resolution -- delivering 5 times the clarity of the company's nearest competitor. In addition, WorldView-3 will offer the most spectral diversity available commercially and will be the first to offer multiple shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands that allow for accurate imaging through haze, fog, dust, smoke and other air-born particulates.

WorldView-3 is aalso the first satellite to offer CAVIS, a cloud, aerosol, water vapor, ice and snow atmospheric correction instrument, which monitors the atmosphere and corrects data for an unprecedented level of consistency.

The satellite and atmospheric monitoring instrument called CAVIS were built by Ball Aerospace. Exelis (NYSE: XLS) built the integrated, super-spectral payload consisting of a telescope, sensor and shortwave infrared system.

Nike Picks Juniper for Next Gen Data Center

Nike has selected Juniper Networks' MetaFabric architecture to build a new, highly-scalable, next-generation data center cloud and retail network infrastructure. Additionally, MetaFabric will serve as the basis for virtualizing multiple NIKE data centers around the world.

Specifically, Juniper said it will work with Nike to provide:

  • A carrier-class, ultra-scalable, secure network architecture, providing a foundation upon which to virtualize multiple NIKE data centers globally.
  • Advanced orchestration via automation, management, and data analytics across all domains
  • Co-creation on future developments for NIKE’s network.

Juniper Intros EX4600 Ethernet Enterprise Switches

Juniper Networks introduced its new line of EX4600 Ethernet switches for enterprise campus networks.

The EX4600 line offers scalable 10/40GbE connectivity with support for Juniper's Virtual Chassis technology, which enables up to 10 interconnected switches to operate as a single, logical device with one IP address. When managed by Junos Space Network Director, the entire campus and data center network can be managed with a common interface through a single pane of glass.

The EX4600 line offers Layer 2 and Layer 3 features, provides In-Service Software Update (ISSU) capabilities,
and includes a number of high availability features such as active and backup routing engines, graceful failover, ISSU capabilities and quality of service (QoS) to prioritize time-sensitive data.

Hexatronic Scandinavia Acquires Proximion

Hexatronic Scandinavia AB, a supplier of optical communication products based in Gothenburg, Sweden, has acquired  all of the shares of Proximion AB.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

Proximion, which is based in Kista, Sweden, supplies optical modules and sub-systems based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology. Its portfolio ranges from single channel, dispersion compensation modules to complex continuous band modules which are used to eliminate the residual dispersion in Submarine Networks or to enable powerful and cost effective dispersion compensation in coherent systems.

Cisco Hits Revenue of $12.4 billion -- Flat Year over Year

Cisco reported quarterly revenue of $12.4 billion, net income on a generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) basis of $2.2 billion or $0.43 per share, and non-GAAP net income of $2.8 billion or $0.55 per share for the period ended July 26, 2014. The earnings came in slightly ahead of market expectations.  The company also announced plans to reallocate or trim some 6,000 jobs in the coming quarters.

"We are executing well in a tough environment and delivered our best non-GAAP earnings per share quarter in our history. I'm pleased with how we are transforming our company over the past several years and that journey continues," stated John Chambers, Cisco chairman and chief executive officer. "We are focused on growth, innovation and talent, especially in the areas of security, data center, software, cloud and internet of everything. Our strategy is sound, our financials are strong, and our market leadership is secure. We have the team in place to deliver and are uniquely positioned to help our customers solve their biggest business problems."

Some highlights from the quarterly conference call:

  • FY’14 revenue amounted to $47.1 billion
  • U.S. orders grew 5% y/y, UK grew 6% y/y, and Germany grew 16% y/y.  However, emerging markets were weak.
  • Cisco cited strong traction for its Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) initiative, saying it is now shipping its APIC and has over 60 paying customers.  The Nexus Nexus 9K is doing well -- customers tripled to more than 580 since end of Q3.
  • Data Center revenue grew 30% y/y.  The Cisco UCS product line now has more than 36,500 customers and has recorded 18th consecutive quarters of market share gains.
  • NCS 6000 and CRS-X continued to ramp…each product crossing $100M orders for FY1

Global Routing Table Crosses 512,000 Entries

The global routing table has passed the milestone of 512,000 routes.  The table reached 256k routes in 2008.

The milestone is significant because exceeding 512,000 entries could cause Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) resource exhaustion for some networking products. In a blog posting, Cisco warned network administrators to check that networking equipment is updated for handling routing tables exceeding 512,000 routes. For its portfolio, equipment that needs to be checked includes:

  • Cisco Catalyst 6500 Switches
  • Cisco 7600 Series Routers
  • Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers configured with Trident-based line cards (typhoon-based line cards are not affected)
  • Cisco ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers with 4GB (devices with 8GB or RAM or higher can scale to up to 1,000,000 routes).

OIF Starts 56G Electrical Interface Project

Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) is kicking off a project to define 56 Gbps generation electrical interfaces for full-sized backplane channels for long reach of up to one meter with two connectors.

The CEI-56G-LR specification will increase the data rate by a factor of two over the data rate of CEI-28G-LR.  It will provide for one or more electrical specifications for lane operation at data rates of 40 to 56 Gb/s. The reach range will be 0 to 1000mm using advanced printed circuit board materials plus two connectors.

The OIF said this Common Electrical Interface (CEI) 56G project complements the existing 400G roadmap that was started last year addressing medium reach (MR) interfaces for chip-to-chip and midrange backplane, very short reach (VSR) for chip-to-module, extra short reach (XSR) for chip to nearby optics engine and ultra short reach (USR) for 2.5D/3D applications.  LR is needed to complete this roadmap for chip-to-chip backplane applications with approximately 35 dBs of loss at 14 GHz.

“Given the lead times, development of standards for the next generation backplane electrical links needs to start now,” said David Stauffer, of Kandou Bus and the OIF Physical and Link Layer working group chair and board member.  “Feedback from our membership indicates that the industry needs the OIF to start the long reach project now so that a complete roadmap can be supported.”

Vodafone New Zealand Rolls 700 MHz LTE with Nokia

Vodafone New Zealand has selected Nokia Networks to enable the launch of its commercial 700 MHz LTE network, one of the first Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) 700 MHz networks in the world.  The APT 700 MHz digital dividend spectrum band is harmonized across several countries in the Asia Pacific region.

“Our focus this year is about expanding our 4G network to rural New Zealand with 700MHz, and Nokia Networks will play an important part in implementing this initiative. We’ll be activating 4G wherever possible on new Rural Broadband Initiative sites this year,” stated Vodafone New Zealand Director of Technology, Sandra Pickering.

In 2012, Vodafone acquire dTelstraClear from Telstra Corporation for NZ$840 million (£430 million, US$664 million) in cash. The deal included TelstraClear’s voice and data-based services, network infrastructure and New Zealand customer base.

Vodafone New Zealand was already the country’s largest mobile operator with more than 2.4 million customers. TelstraClear owned New Zealand’s second largest fixed infrastructure, which includes a 6,600km fibre backbone connecting 19 of the country’s largest cities. It also includes an extensive local access network with 2,000km of fibre and 4,500km of copper as well as a cable TV and broadband access network passing 150,000 homes in Wellington and Christchurch. Its customer base includes government and large corporations, small and medium enterprises as well as consumers. 

ADTRAN Cranks Up its Gigabit Rollouts Initiative

ADTRAN's Gigabit services architecture is gaining momentum and by the end of the year will have reached than 50 communities implementing gigabit services.  The company forecasts this number to quadruple by the end of 2015.

“Over the past year ADTRAN has worked with hundreds of service providers to introduce Gigabit services as part of our vision to help reinvent communities around the country,” said Jay Wilson, senior vice president and general manager, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. “ADTRAN’s Gigabit broadband platform will serve as the foundation for our partners’ community economic growth and development for years to come.”

ADTRAN is also launching a a resource site, www.GigCommunities.net, as part of its Enabling Communities, Connecting Lives program for service providers looking to deploy Gigabit services in the future.

Separately, ADTRAN announced that C Spire will deploy its technology to create a new "Silicon South" in Mississippi. The deployment enables C Spire Fiber to the Home service to deliver ultra-fast broadband.

Pioneer Cellular Picks ALU for LTE

Pioneer Cellular has selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy a complete LTE overlay network in Oklahoma and Kansas. The deployment will eventually cover Pioneer's entire customer base covering 47 counties in Oklahoma and 14 counties in Kansas.  The initial 25 sites to be deployed will be completed by the end of 2014, with an eventual plan to cover all of Pioneer’s network.

Alcatel-Lucent is providing Pioneer Cellular with an end-to-end 4G LTE overlay solution including  LTE Radio Access Network, IP Mobile Packet Core (MME, SGW/PGW, PCRF), Subscriber Data Manager, IP Mobile Backhaul (7705 SAR) and associated deployment and integration services.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

SoftBank Demos Busy Hour Mobile Policy Control with Ericsson

Ericsson and SoftBank Mobile demonstrated a policy-based system aimed at improving the user experience in even the most congested network environments, such as rush-hour in Tokyo.

Ericsson's new software feature, the Mobility-based Policy creates a direct connection between Ericsson SGSN-MME and Ericsson Service-Aware Policy Controller. This connection enables mobility management information from the SGSN-MME to go directly to the Service-Aware Policy Controller, while selected policy decisions from the Service-Aware Policy Controller can then go directly to the SGSN-MME. By off-loading the gateway, Mobility-based Policy supports an enhanced, location-based mobile user experience while reducing signaling traffic in the network.

The SoftBank Mobile network includes both Ericsson LTE Radio Access Network and Evolved Packet Core. Ericsson was also selected by SoftBank Mobile to supply and integrate its end-to-end mobile network solution for VoLTE.

"To accommodate our subscribers and data traffic growth, it is critical to optimize our spectrum. Huawei Achieves 63Mbps in 3C-HSDPA Test

Huawei achieved a peak download rate of 63 Mbps in a laboratory test of 3-Carrier-High Speed Downlink Packet Access (3C-HSDPA). The result represents an improvement of 50% increase in downlink user speeds compared with Dual Carrier-High Speed Downlink Packet Access (DC-HSDPA).

Release10 of 3GPP introduces 3C-HSDPA technology, effectively aggregating three carriers for a single downlink subscriber over one or two mainstream UMTS bands at 850-900MHz and 2100MHz.

Huawei said continuous improvement to HSDPA potentially benefits billions of users currently on UMTS networks worldwide.

"This is a timely and important milestone in a fast expanding world of smart phones, growing mobile video demand and real-time large file download expectations," said Wang Yixiang, President of UMTS Domain in Huawei. "The relevance of higher speed downlink is also of significance for a growing number of multi-carrier networks, especially 3G 900 MHz and 2100 MHz band network deployments where improving download speeds through multi-carrier aggregation technology is critical for maintaining user experience and retention."
