Xtera Supplies 100G for TIM Brasil in Amazonas

Xtera Communications supplied its 100G optical transport platform to TIM Brasil for a new infrastructure deployment connecting three cities in the Amazon: Manaus, Macapá and Belém.

Xtera’s Nu-Wave Optima 100G optical networking platform was used for a new optical backbone network that was built using the tower transmission lines and power substations of the LT Amazon consortium.  The TIM Brasil cables connect 27 cities in the states of Amazonas, Pará and Amapá. Given the challenging geography of this network environment, the lengths of 5 out of the 14 spans that make up this infrastructure exceed 200 km between sites where active optical equipment is positioned. The longest of these spans reaches nearly 260 km.

Calxeda Adds Chairman of the Open Compute Foundation to its Board

Calxeda, a start-up developing ARM-based “EnergyCore” Server-on-a-Chip designed for a new generation of high-density servers, announce today that Frank Frankovsky, chairman and president of the Open Compute Foundation, has joined its board of directors.  Frankovsky is also a vice president of infrastructure at Facebook, where he joined in 2009 after previously working at Dell and Compaq.

Calxeda said it has worked closely with the Open Compute Project, joining as an official member in January 2013 with support for the OCP "Group Hug" common slot specification. Frankovsky had previously served as an informal advisor to Calxeda executives.

Cable & Wireless Communications Names CEO

Cable & Wireless Communications named Phil Bentley as its new CEO, replacing Tony Rice, with effect from 1 January 2014.

Bentley was previously Managing Director at British Gas, the UK’s leading energy and services provider between 2007 and 2013. Rice decided to step down as CEO, ahead of the establishment of CWC’s new executive office in Miami, Florida, and will leave the Board at the end of 2013.

Cable & Wireless Communications has set its sights on being the leading provider of mobile, fixed line and broadband communications services in Latin America and the Caribbean region. CWC is investing in its operations in the region, particularly in mobile data, high-speed broadband and customer experience systems, as well as considering strategic acquisition opportunities. It has also committed to reducing operating costs by US$100 million over the next
two years.

Layer123 SDN & OpenFlow World Congress: China Unicom and Telefónica on NFV

China Unicom and Telefónica published a whitepaper about their Joint Approach to Network Virtualization.

The carriers see network transformation as fundamental for achieving the flexibility and efficiency required to keep up with exploding customer traffic. The collaboration focuses on the development and standardization of Network Virtualisation technologies.  Use cases they are working on include the Virtualization of the Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE).

“China Unicom considers operators are facing great challenges such as complicate, huge network, difficult to maintain and long time to provide new services, with the SDN and NFV technology, network virtualization will be a good way for us to solve these problems”, Mr Zhang Zhong Ping, director of technical department of China Unicom said.

“Telefónica sees the implementation of SDN and NFV technologies as a factor of our network infrastructure development strategy,” said Mr Enrique Algaba, Director of Network Innovation at Telefónica I+D – Global CTO Unit. “We expect that scheme for CPE virtualization we jointly propose will help us prove the viability of this technology and enable us to implement rollouts in a more flexible and reliable way coupled with low operating costs.”

Blueprint Tutorial: SDN and NFV for Optimizing Carrier Networks

The ongoing convergence of video and cloud-based applications, along with the exploding adoption of mobile devices and services, are having a profound impact on carrier networks. Carriers are under tremendous pressure to deploy new, value-added services to grow subscriber numbers and increase revenue per user, while simultaneously lowering capital and operational expenditures.

To help meet these challenges, some carriers are creating some of these new services by more tightly integrating the traditionally separate data center and carrier networks. By extending the virtualization technologies that are already well-established in data centers into the telecom network domain, overall network utilization and operational efficiencies can be improved end-to-end, resulting in a substantially more versatile and cost-effective infrastructure.

This two-part article series explores the application of two virtualization techniques—software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV)—to the emerging unified datacenter-carrier network infrastructure.

Drivers for virtualization of carrier networks in a unified datacenter-carrier network

In recent years, user expectations for “anywhere, anytime” access to business and entertainment applications and services are changing the service model needed by carrier network operators. For example, e-commerce applications are now adopting cloud technologies, as service providers continue incorporating new business applications into their service models. For entertainment, video streaming content now includes not only traditional movies and shows, but also user-created content and Internet video. The video delivery mechanism is evolving, as well, to include streaming onto a variety of fixed and mobile platforms. Feature-rich mobile devices now serve as e-commerce and entertainment platforms in addition to their traditional role as communication devices, fueling deployment of new applications, such as mobile TV, online gaming, Web 2.0 and personalized video.

Figures 1 and 2 show some pertinent trends affecting carrier networks. Worldwide services revenue is expected to reach $2.1 trillion in 2017, according to an Insight research report, while the global number of mobile subscribers is expected to reach 2.6 billion by 2016, according to Infonetics Research.



To remain profitable, carriers need to offer value-added services that increase the average revenue per user (ARPU), and to create these new services cost-effectively, they need to leverage the existing datacenter and network infrastructures. This is why the datacenters running these new services are becoming as critical as the networks delivering them when it comes to providing profitable services to subscribers.

Datacenter and carrier networks are quite different in their architectures and operational models, which can make unifying them potentially complex and costly. According to The Yankee Group, about 30 percent of the total operating expenditures (OpEx) of a service provider are due to network costs, as shown in Figure 3. To reduce OpEx and, over time, capital expenditures (CapEx), service providers are being pushed to find solutions that enable them to leverage a more unified datacenter-carrier network model as a means to optimize their network and improve overall resource utilization.

Virtualization of the network infrastructure is one strategy for achieving this cost-effectively. Virtualization is a proven technique that has been widely adopted in enterprise IT based on its ability to improve utilization and operational efficiency of datacenter server, storage and network resources. By extending the virtualization principles into the various segments of a carrier network, a unified datacenter-carrier network can be fully virtualized—end-to-end and top-to-bottom—making it far more scalable, adaptable and affordable than ever before.

Benefits of integrating datacenters into a carrier network

Leveraging the virtualized datacenter model to virtualize the carrier network has several benefits that can help address the challenges associated with a growing subscriber base and more demanding performance expectations, while simultaneously reducing CapEx and OpEx. The approach also enables carriers to seamlessly integrate new services for businesses and consumers, such as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) or video acceleration. Google, Facebook and Amazon, for example, now use integrated datacenter models to store and analyze Big Data. Integration makes it possible to leverage datacenter virtualization architectures, such as multi-tenant compute or content delivery networks, to scale or deploy new services without requiring expensive hardware upgrades. Incorporating the datacenter model can also enable a carrier to centralize its billing support system (BSS) and operation support system (OSS) stacks, thereby doing away with distributed, heterogeneous network elements and consolidating them to centralized servers. And by using commodity servers instead of proprietary network elements, carriers are able to further reduce both CapEx and OpEx.

Integrated datacenter-carrier virtualization technology trends

The benefits of virtualization derive from its ability to create a layer of abstraction with the physical resources. For example, the hypervisor software creates and manages multiple virtual machines (VMs) on a single physical server to improve overall utilization.

While the telecom industry has lagged behind the IT industry in virtualizing resources, most service providers are now aggressively working to adapt virtualization principles in their carrier networks. Network function virtualization (NFV), for example, is being developed by a collaboration of service providers as a standard means to decouple and virtualize carrier network functions from traditional network elements, and then distribute these functions across the network more cost-effectively. By enabling network functions to be consolidated onto VMs running on a homogenous hardware platform, NFV holds the potential to minimize both CapEx and OpEx in carrier networks.

Another trend in virtualized datacenters is the abstraction being made possible with software-defined networking, which is enabling datacenter networks to become more manageable and more open to innovation. SDN shifts the network paradigm by decoupling or abstracting the physical topology to present a logical or virtual view of the network. SDN technology is particularly applicable to carrier networks, which usually consist of disparate network segments based on heterogeneous hardware platforms.

Technical overview of network virtualization

Here is a brief overview of the two technologies currently being used in unified datacenter-carrier network infrastructures: SDN and NFV.

Software-Defined Networking

SDN is a network virtualization technique based on the logical separation and abstraction of both the control and data plane functions, as shown in Figure 4. Using SDN, the network elements, such as switches, routers, etc., can be implemented in software, virtualized as shown, and executed anywhere in a network, including in the cloud.


SDN decouples the network functions from the underlying physical resources using OpenFlow®, the vendor-agnostic standard interface being developed by the Open Networking Foundation (ONF). With SDN, a network administrator can deploy a new network application by writing a program that simply manipulates the logical map for a “slice” of the network.

Because most carrier networks are implemented today with a mix of different platforms and protocols, SDN offers some substantial advantages in a unified datacenter-carrier network. It opens up the network for incorporating innovation. It makes it easier for network administrators to manage and control the network infrastructure. It reduces CapEx by facilitating the use of commodity servers and services, potentially by mixing and matching platforms from different vendors. In the datacenter, for example, network functions could be decoupled from the network elements, like line and control cards, and moved onto commodity servers. Compared to expensive proprietary networking solutions, commodity servers provide a far more affordable yet fully mature platform based on proven virtualization technologies, and industry-standard processors and software.

To ensure robust security—always important in a carrier network—the OpenFlow architecture requires authentication when establishing connections between end-stations, and operators can leverage this capability to augment existing security functions or add new ones. This is especially beneficial in carrier networks where there is a need to support a variety of secure and non-secure applications, and third-party and user-defined APIs.

Network Function Virtualization

NFV is an initiative being driven by network operators with a goal to reduce end-to-end network expenditures by applying virtualization techniques to telecom infrastructures. Like SDN, NFV decouples network functions from traditional network elements, like switches, routers and appliances, enabling these task-based functions to then be centralized or distributed on other (less expensive) network elements. With NFV, the various network functions are normally consolidated onto commodity servers, switches and storage systems to lower costs. Figure 5 illustrates a virtualized carrier network in which network functions, such as a mobility management entity (MME), are run on VMs on a common hardware platform and an open source hypervisor, such as a KVM.

NFV and SDN are complementary technologies that can be applied independently of each other. Or NFV can provide a foundation for SDN. By using an NFV foundation combined with SDN’s separation of the control and data planes, carrier network performance can be enhanced, its management can be simplified, and new services can be more easily deployed.

Verizon: Growth Continues in Smartphones and FiOS

Verizon reported Q3 revenue of $30.3 billion, a 4.4 percent increase compared with third-quarter 2012. This is the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year revenue growth of more than 4 percent. Earnings came in at 78 cents in EPS in third-quarter 2013, compared with 56 cents per share in third-quarter 2012. Third-quarter 2013 results include a non-operational gain of 2 cents per share related to the sale of wireless spectrum, partially offset by 1 cent per share in incremental interest expense related to the financing of Verizon's planned purchase of Vodafone Group PLC's 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless.

Lowell McAdam, Verizon chairman and CEO, said: "These strong third-quarter results reflect Verizon's long-term investment in reliable, high-quality networks to deliver value to customers. Our unwavering focus on wireless, FiOS and strategic enterprise services has produced consistent performance, and we've delivered double-digit earnings growth in six of the past seven quarters. Verizon's strategic networks form a powerful distribution platform for future growth and innovation."

Wireless Financial Highlights


  • Total revenues were $20.4 billion in third-quarter 2013, up 7.2 percent year over year. Service revenues in the quarter totaled $17.5 billion, up 8.4 percent year over year. Retail service revenues grew 8.0 percent year over year, to $16.8 billion.
  • Retail postpaid ARPA (average revenue per account) increased 7.1 percent over third-quarter 2012, to $155.74 per month.
  • Verizon Wireless added 1.1 million net retail connections, including 927,000 retail postpaid net connections, in the third quarter. These additions exclude acquisitions and adjustments. The company expects customer growth to increase sequentially in the fourth quarter.
  • At the end of the third quarter, the company had 101.2 million retail connections -- a 5.5 percent increase year over year -- including 95.2 million retail postpaid connections.
  • Verizon Wireless had 35 million retail postpaid accounts at the end of the third quarter -- an average of 2.7 connections per account. Nearly 42 percent of retail postpaid accounts are now on a Share Everything Plan, which allows customers to share data among multiple devices.
  • At the end of the third quarter, smartphones accounted for more than 67 percent of the Verizon Wireless retail postpaid customer phone base, up from 64 percent at the end of second-quarter 2013.
  • Retail postpaid churn was 0.97 percent in the third quarter, up 6 basis points year over year. Retail churn was 1.28 percent in the third quarter, up 10 basis points year over year.
  • Verizon Wireless has substantially completed deployment of its 4G LTE network, covering more than 99 percent of its current 3G network footprint.
  • Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network is now available in more than 500 markets to 97 percent of the U.S. population and covers more than 303 million people, including those in areas served by the company's LTE in Rural America partners.
  • Consumer revenues were $3.7 billion, an increase of 4.3 percent compared with third-quarter 2012. Consumer revenues have grown more than 4 percent year over year for five consecutive quarters. Consumer ARPU for wireline services increased to $112.86 in third-quarter 2013, up 8.7 percent compared with third-quarter 2012.
  • FiOS revenues grew 13.4 percent, to $2.8 billion in third-quarter 2013, compared with $2.5 billion in third-quarter 2012.
  • Wireline operating income margin was 1.6 percent in third-quarter 2013, up 120 basis points over third-quarter 2012. Segment EBITDA margin (non-GAAP) was 22.7 percent, compared with 21.7 percent in third-quarter 2012. Verizon continues to expect that full-year 2013 Wireline EBITDA margin will be similar to 2012 when excluding impacts of Superstorm Sandy from last year's results. The company also continues to target improved Wireline profitability and margin expansion in 2014.
  • Sales of strategic services to global enterprise customers increased 5.2 percent compared with third-quarter 2012 and represented 58 percent of total enterprise revenues. Strategic services include cloud and data center services, security and IT solutions, advanced communications, strategic networking and telematics services. Earlier this month, Verizon announced its new cloud services strategy.
Wireline Operational Highlights
  • In third-quarter 2013, Verizon added 173,000 net new FiOS Internet connections, up 27.2 percent from third-quarter 2012 -- and 135,000 net new FiOS Video connections, up 13.4 percent.
  • Verizon had a total of 5.9 million FiOS Internet and 5.2 million FiOS Video connections at the end of the quarter, representing year-over-year increases of 12.6 percent for each.
  • FiOS penetration (subscribers as a percentage of potential subscribers) continued to increase. FiOS Internet penetration was 39.2 percent at the end of third-quarter 2013, compared with 37.0 percent at the end of third-quarter 2012. In the same periods, FiOS Video penetration was 34.9 percent, compared with 32.9 percent. The FiOS network passed 18.3 million premises by the end of third-quarter 2013.
  • Verizon is enriching the FiOS Video customer value proposition by adding free anytime, anywhere mobile access to nine of the most popular TV channels via the FiOS Mobile app (iPad, iPhone, select Android tablets and smartphones, and Kindle Fire HD). Customers who download the app can also buy or rent more than 45,000 on-demand movie and TV show titles from Verizon FlexView. More live TV channels will be added in the coming months.
  • By the end of third-quarter 2013, more than 40 percent of FiOS Internet customers subscribed to FiOS Quantum, which provides speeds ranging from 50 to 500 megabits per second, up from 35 percent at the end of second-quarter 2013.
  • Broadband connections totaled nearly 9.0 million at the end of third-quarter 2013, a 2.6 percent year-over-year increase. Overall, net broadband customers increased 56,000 in the third quarter, as FiOS Internet net customer additions more than offset a decline in subscribers for DSL-based High Speed Internet services.
  • Through the first nine months of 2013, Verizon migrated nearly 250,000 homes to fiber, on track to exceed a target of 300,000 migrations within FiOS markets in 2013. By year-end 2013, Verizon projects it will have less than 1 million remaining customers served by copper in FiOS markets.

Earthlink Implements RiverMeadow's Cloud Migration SaaS

EarthLink has enabled their Cloud Hosting Services with the RiverMeadow Cloud Migration SaaS. As part of the agreement, RiverMeadow migrations will be bundled with EarthLink Cloud Hosting offers, to facilitate customer onboarding.

RiverMeadow said its Cloud Migration SaaS provides a low-touch, three-step, automated process to migrate physical, virtual or cloud-based servers into EarthLink Cloud Hosting environments. There is no need to purchase software or install agents and workloads can remain in production during the migration process. For more complex workload migrations, EarthLink and partner service teams will be able to use RiverMeadow’s RESTFul API to apply custom steps.

Huawei Confirms Contract for China Telecom's Global Optical Backbone

Huawei has been selected as China Telecom’s partner in the global deployment of its backbone optical transport network (OTN) covering the U.S., UK, Sweden, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, and eight provinces of mainland China.  Multiple core nodes will be deployed in these regions. The OTNs will connect to various carrier networks around the world and expand with the development of services. Financial terms were not disclosed.

China Telecom used to deploy international private lines based on an SDH+WDM solution. In this solution, SDH was used at the access layer, while large-capacity WDM was used at the aggregation and backbone layers.

In this project, China Telecom adopts the innovative OTN+WDM solution, in which OTN, instead of SDH, is used for service access and scheduling. OTN features high access capacities and flexible scheduling of large-granularity services, simplifying the scheduling of large-granularity services and standing as an inspiring case for the industry.

NEC is First to Pass ONF's OpenFlow Conformance Testing

NEC Corporation has received the first Certificate of Conformance through the Open Networking Foundation's (ONF's) OpenFlow Conformance Testing Program.

The ONF OpenFlow Conformance Testing Program was launched in July 2013. The Program provides networking vendors with the opportunity to demonstrate compliance with the OpenFlow specification, the first SDN standard and a vital element of an open SDN architecture. Testing of NEC’s Programmable Flow switches PF5240 and PF5248 was conducted by Indiana Center for Network Translational Research and Education (InCNTRE), one of the three independent labs approved for ONF OpenFlow Conformance testing.

ZTE Awarded More Than 60% Share of China Mobile’s 100G OTN Group Tender

ZTE has been awarded more than 60% share of the contracts in China Mobile’s group tender for 100G Optical Transport Networking products for 2013.

The large-scale nationwide group tender comprises China Mobile’s 100G OTN networks in all provinces, and each vendor was thoroughly assessed on equipment technology, engineering implementation and network planning. Before the tender, China Mobile commissioned special laboratories to perform stringent testing on each vendor’s offerings, before shortlisting the two vendors with the highest comprehensive scores. ZTE, with a comprehensive series of industry-leading 100G products and total OTN solutions, including the ZXONE 8000, was ranked No.1 and got more than 60% share in the group tender. Other participating vendors included Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell and Fiberhome.

ZTE’s new-generation ZXONE 8000 can implement ultra-large cross-connection capacity of 9.4T/3.2T/2.8T/1.4T/0.8T, support non-blocking multi-granularity grooming of ODU0/1/2/2e/3/4/flex and seamlessly covering all network layers including national backbone network/provincial backbone network/metro core layer/metro aggregation layer.

Layer123 SDN & OpenFlow World Congress: Platforms for Innovation

"The basic value proposition of SDN remains the same -- either you make money or save money," said Dan Pitt, Executive Director, Open Networking Forum speaking at the opening of the Layer123 SDN & OpenFlow World Congress in Bad Homberg, Germany.


What has change in the past year since the last SDN World Congress?

Attendance at the event has nearly doubled to about 700 and the companies presenting at the event have increased in number and diversity as real world use cases become the topic of discussion.

From the perspective of the ONF, Dan Pitt said OpenFlow has established its value as the open, vendor-neutral standard made for SDN.

With new SDN use cases showing CAPEX and OPEX savings, Pitt said there is no doubt that SDN will have a big market impact on both data centers and carrier networks.  The first signs of SDN hitting the mainstream press can now be seen in advertising from NTT Communications touting its software-defined capabilities.

ONF Forms Northbound Interface Working Group, Wireless & Mobile Working Group

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) has established a Northbound Interface (NBI) Working Group with a charter to develop information models for NBIs and to help the application developers actively seeking an open Application Programming Interface (API) to develop code against.

“The proliferation of approaches to NBIs is impeding the progress of SDN,” said Dan Pitt, executive director of the Open Networking Foundation. “As part of our role in helping the industry develop and maintain approaches to open SDN, we are taking the lead in helping end users better understand what NBIs serve what needs. The primary driver for our work in this area is the creation of one or a small number of stable, open interfaces that will support rapid adoption of SDN. We continue to believe that software standards should be created by a committee only when absolutely necessary,” continued Pitt. “One of the purposes of the Working Group is to determine if an NBI standard from a committee is needed by the market. Over the last two years, we have said that more experience was needed with SDN controllers and applications before anyone could judge the qualities of a ‘good’ NBI. Our Working Group will build on the considerable body of experience gained since then and on the demand from application developers for assistance in understanding this critical component of a complete SDN solution.”

The new Working Group, chartered this month, has launched with strong support from ONF Member Companies: HP, Huawei, Intel, NEC, Plexxi, and Radware.

A Chairperson for the NBI Working Group will be appointed by the Board in November, after applications are received from Member Company candidates. Initial information modeling will be completed in 2014.

The ONF has also formed a new Wireless & Mobile Working Group to develop reference architecture/implications for OpenFlow in mobile networks.  Current projects include Mobile backhaul/wireless transport, Mobile packet core/EPC, OmniRAN and Enterprise.

VMware to Rollout vCloud Hybrid Service in UK

VMware is preparing to launch its vCloud Hybrid Service in the UK beginning with a first data center location in Slough.

In addition, VMware announced new hybrid cloud management capabilities and the vCloud Hybrid Service Application Marketplace.

VMware vCloud Hybrid Service, built on VMware vSphere®, enables customers to extend the same applications, networking, management, operations and tools across both on-premises and off-premises environments. The UK expansion demonstrates VMware’s commitment to expand its infrastructure as a service (IaaS) footprint internationally and provide European customers with the fastest path to cloud.

“The UK represents one of the largest IT markets in Europe, and VMware is committed to providing customers with a local, in-country public cloud which will enable them to extend their current data centers and deploy new cloud-native applications,” said Bill Fathers, senior vice president and general manager, Hybrid Cloud Services Business Unit, VMware. “This is the first significant milestone in our commitment to deliver cloud services in Europe. VMware vCloud allows users to migrate VMs on demand from their "internal cloud" of cooperating VMware vSphere hypervisors to a remote cloud of VMware vSphere hypervisors.

The service is hosted in three U.S. data centers: Santa Clara, California, Sterling, Virginia, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

VMware Acquires Desktone for Desktop-As-A-Service

VMware has acquired Desktone, a start-up offering a multi-tenant desktop virtualization platform for delivering Windows desktops and applications as a cloud service. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Desktone, which is based in Lexington, MA, offers a "Desktone" platform that was purpose-built for service providers to deliver windows applications and desktops as a cloud service with unique capabilities such as:

  • Multi-tenancy – A must for cloud delivery. Each customer gets a separate virtual environment to ensure security while cloud providers are able to manage multiple customers under one platform.
  • Self Service of virtual desktops – Simple provisioning from the cloud enables self-service for IT of full VDI, shared session remote desktop service (RDS) desktops and applications without the need to procure hardware or software.
  • Grid-based architecture for elastic scalability – Advanced architecture enables unlimited scalability across multiple geographies and data centers.
  • Low cost of delivery – Open source based technology eliminates Microsoft licensing fees and third-party software management, resulting in cost savings over competitive desktop virtualization offerings.

Advantech Integrates Netronome's Flow Processing Technology

Advantech and Netronome are collaborating to produce high performance x86 systems for the networking and telecom industries.

Specifically, Advantech integrates Netronome's NFE-3240 acceleration cards into its Carrier Grade and Optimized IO servers that are a part of its CGS-6000 High Performance Server Line. Highly optimized, next generation appliance and server designs which leverage Netronome’s NFP-6000 series of flow processors are now under development with full disclosure slated for the first quarter 2014.

Netronome’s flow processors offload x86 cores from compute intensive tasks such as network load balancing between cores, cut-through forwarding of traffic, tunnel encapsulation/decapsulation, encryption/decryption, and traffic grooming for efficient processing of network flows.

Australia's Megaport Deploys Brocade MLXe Core Routers

Australia-based Megaport has selected Brocade's MLXe Core Routers will the goal of becoming a leading provider of network interconnection services across the Asia-Pacific region.   ASI Solutions serves as integrator for the project, which represents the first delivery of 100 Gbps network services in the region from Brocade.

Since its launch in July 2013, Megaport -- which currently extends to 18 major data centers in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane -- has connected over 700 Gbps in bandwidth as customers embrace its groundbreaking solutions. ACG: Strong Optical Networking Spending Promises Steady Growth

ACG Research is projecting that the Total Worldwide Optical Networking market will increase from $14 B to $17.25 B by 2018 (CAGR 4.4%).

Its study finds that the immediate growth is coming from network expansions of the incumbent carriers in North America and APAC and driven largely by the up-take in LTE services. This build-out should take a couple years to complete and will also expand to the EMEA market where it will fuel revenue growth in the outlying three to five years. The projected five-year growth on a regional basis will be EMEA (CAGR 5.0%), Americas (4.7% CAGR) and APAC (3.7% CAGR). Based upon revenue generation the ranked order is Americas, APAC and EMEA.

ACG Research also forecasts that the packet optical transport segment (POTS) will grow the fastest over five years (7.2% CAGR) and reach a $2 B run rate in 2018. Meanwhile, the legacy product segments of Long Haul DWDM (4.7% CAGR), Metro DWDM (4.7% CAGR) and MSPP (4.0% CAGR) will continue to grow; they account for approximately 85% of the total optical network spend during the next five years. This is due largely to the relationships or dependencies between the product segments. The only product segments forecast to deliver negative growth over five years are the optical cross connect (OXC) segment (-6.0% CAGR) and the SONET/SDH (-9.1% CAGR) segment.
