U.S. GAO Confirms Amazon Web Services for CIA Cloud Contract

The U.S. Government Accountability Office confirmed the selection of Amazon Web Services as prime contractor for cloud computing services on behalf of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).  The award was confirmed over the protests of IBM.

The contract calls for a 270-day period to achieve initial operating capability, a 4-year base ordering period, a 3-year option, and a 2-year option, with a maximum value of $600 million over the base period. The contractor is to provide its existing public cloud (modified where necessary) to be installed on government premises and operated by the provider. Performance is to include both: (1) infrastructure as a service, in which the provider (contractor) is responsible for networking, storage, servers and virtualization, and the consumers (government agencies) are responsible for the operating system, middleware, runtime, data, and applications, System Requirements Document; (2)and platform as a service, which encompasses the same components as infrastructure as a service, but only applications and data are the responsibility of the consumer.

Although IBM's bid was lower, the agency expressed doubt about the auto-scaling capability of IBM's public cloud and selected AWS instead.

Savvis Acquires AppFog for Enabling Apps in the Cloud

Savvis, the data center and IT infrastructure division of CenturyLink, has acquired AppFog, a Platform-as-a-Service provider that is hosting more than 150,000 applications.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

AppFog, which is based in Portland, Oregon, offers an app-to-cloud enablement platform that supports multiple programming languages (Java, .NET, Node, Ruby, Python, PHP, etc) and ensures interoperability between public and private cloud environments. The acquisition adds AppFog's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) capabilities to the Savvis Cloud product catalog.

"AppFog leads the way in Platform-as-a-Service capabilities and continues to see strong adoption in the developer community," said Jeff Von Deylen, president of CenturyLink's Savvis organization. AT&T Opens LTE Network to Prepaid GoPhone BYOD Smartphones

AT&T will begin offering prepaid wireless plan access to its 4G LTE network.

Beginning June 21st, new and existing AT&T GoPhone customers can bring their own 4G or 4G LTE smartphone or choose a GoPhone device.  Plan options include:

  • $60 a month for 2 GB of data, unlimited nationwide calling, and unlimited messaging — now double the data at a lower monthly price. Additional data is available for $10 per 1 GB.
  • $40 a month for 200 MB of data, 500 minutes of nationwide calling, and unlimited messaging. Additional data is available for $5 per 100 MB.
  • $25 a month for 250 minutes of nationwide calling and unlimited messaging, with an optional data package of 50 MB for an additional $5 a month.
  • $50 unlimited talk and text plan with Wi-Fi data only.

AT&T is also adding 4G LTE-capable Samsung Galaxy Express to its lineup of GoPhone devices.

Verizon to Offer Private IP into Equinix Data Centers

Verizon is bringing its Private IP service directly into Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in major markets around the world.

Verizon recently announced enablement of 100GE access for its Private IP network, giving global enterprise customers faster speeds.

The new partnership with Equinix provides enterprise customers with high-performance, private IP connections into Equinix, which has built an ecosystem of cloud services available through its data centers. Verizon also offers reporting and monitoring tools and portals with its Private IP solution. Fully integrated solutions from Verizon + Equinix will be available by the end of 2013.

"Verizon and Equinix are market leaders, and the new alliance we have formed will provide customers of both companies the foundation to transform their businesses,” said John Stratton, president, Verizon Enterprise Solutions. “Whether it is e-commerce applications, big data, media and entertainment or cloud computing, enterprises need to quickly and securely access and move information from various points around the world.”

Last month, Equinix expanded its rollout of AWS Direct Connect Service to its International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in Seattle (SE2 and SE3).

AWS Direct Connect provides a private connection to Amazon Web Services (AWS) via a cross connect at the Equinix data center.  It can also be used to connect to the AWS GovCloud (US) from all existing AWS Direct Connect locations in North America.

Existing Equinix customers can connect to AWS Direct Connect inside the Seattle data center.  Customers can achieve millisecond latency between their infrastructure and AWS infrastructure.

Since the roll out of AWS Direct Connect in Equinix’s Ashburn, Virginia data center campus, AWS Direct Connect has expanded to Equinix locations in Seattle, Silicon Valley, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo. Equinix customers such as Badgeville, Box, Carpathia Hosting and NetApp are using AWS Direct Connect to lower network costs into and out of AWS, bypassing the public internet.

NTT Com Picks VMware for Enterprise Cloud

NTT Communications will deploy VMware network virtualization as a core technology for its new cloud service, Enterprise Cloud (EC). Specifically, NTT Com will use VMware network virtualization as a network overlay.


VMware's network virtualization will enable NTT Com to provide seamless and flexible connectivity between customer data centers and the NTT Com cloud without changing the IP addresses of a customer’s existing, on-premise environment. The companies said this capability will make its easier for customers to migrate into the cloud.

“To deliver on NTT Com’s global cloud vision announced in 2011, NTT Com offers a new business cloud service that will utilize network virtualization technology in its production environment across 11 data centers in nine countries,” said Motoo Tanaka, senior vice president of cloud services at NTT Com. “With advanced network virtualization technology from VMware, NTT Com will provide customers seamless connectivity between cloud infrastructures, and will support customers’ cloud migration by connecting with a customer’s on-premise data center. RAD Supplies Ethernet Backhaul for Tier 1 in Europe

RAD confirmed that a major Tier 1 European service provider has deployed its Service Assured Access solution for backhauling 3G and LTE over the same Ethernet infrastructure. More than one million LTE subscribers are expected to be served by the network by the end of this year. RAD valued the deal at more than several million dollars over the life of the project.

RAD said this project include over ten thousand units of its ETX-2 Advanced Carrier Ethernet Mobile Demarcation Device. In addition, the service provider will also soon be testing RAD's MiNID Ethernet Demarcation SFP, a fully functional Service Assured Access Network Interface Device (NID) housed in a smart SFP enclosure.

Russia's Avelacom Builds 100G Moscow-London Route with Alcatel-Lucent

Russia-based Avelacom announced will expand its 100G optical backbone network from Moscow to London using Alcatel-Lucent’s Agile Optical Networking technology. The deployment uses 100G DWDM on Alcatel-Lucent's 1830 Photonic Service Switch (1830 PSS) platform.

The route enables Avelacom to provide low cost, high-capacity and low-latency connectivity between Russia’s two largest cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg, and cities in the Baltics, Scandinavia and Western Europe.  Alcatel-Lucent Channel Partner Maintrac, headquartered in Linkoping Sweden, is providing turnkey installation, provisioning and maintenance.

DISH and nTelos Test 2.5 GHz Fixed LTE

DISH and NTELOS launched a test of fixed wireless broadband service using 2.5 GHz spectrum.  The trial in rural  Virginia is reaching 10 Mbps to more than 50 Mbps at the initial test sites.

As part of the demonstration, nTelos and DISH have activated two wireless tower test sites in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Waynesboro and Afton, Va. Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent have provided equipment and assisted in the installation.

The trial uses a ruggedized, LTE outdoor router attached to the side of home.

RingCentral Names Former Cisco WebEx Exec as President

RingCentral named David Berman as president of RingCentral, reporting to company founder, chairman and CEO, Vlad Shmunis.

Prior to joining RingCentral, Berman served as president and CEO of Affectiva, which provides real-world accuracy and relevance in emotion analytics based on research from MIT.  Before that, Berman was president of Worldwide Sales and Services at WebEx Communications, a position that he held through the acquisition of the company by Cisco.

Earthlink Opens Silicon Valley Data Center

Earthlink opened its newest data center on its next-generation cloud hosting platform, located at 8 Great Oaks Boulevard in San Jose, CA. EarthLink has also opened a new local sales office.

EarthLink recently opened data centers in Chicago and Dallas, and will open another one in Miami next month.  The company also operates data centers in Pittsford, NY; Marlborough, MA; Columbia, SC and Atlanta.

Cisco Scales its Core Routers for 64x100 GE Density

Cisco is extending its core routing product line with a new model boasting 400 Gbps per slot capacity and the ability to scale to multi-chassis configuration with nearly 1 petabit per second capacity.  The platform is engineered for high densities of 10 GE, 40 GE and 100 GE in core service provider networks.  The scalability enables up to 64x100 GE ports in one chassis.  The platform is powered by a new set of custom ASICs developed in-house.

The Cisco Carrier Routing System-X (CRS-X), which will ship later this year, retains IOS-XR and line-card compatibility with the previous CRS models while offering 10 times the capacity of the original CRS-1, which was introduced in 2004.

Key innovations include Cisco AnyPort technology allowing the use of new CMOS-based line card (Cisco CPAK)  to reduce power consumption, reduce the cost of sparing, and increase deployment flexibility. For example, each interface can be configured for either single port 100 Gigabit Ethernet, 2x40 GE, or 10 x10 GE and either short-, long-, or extended-reach optics by selecting a specific CPAK transceiver.

The CRS-X architecture also allows for IP and optical layer convergence. The CRS-X can be configured with integrated optics or the new Cisco nV optical satellite.  Both allow for a single IP and optical system that utilizes Cisco’s nLight technology for control plane automation.  The nV optical satellite deployments operate as a single managed system with the Cisco CRS Family to reduce operational expense and deliver high-density 100 GE scaling.

Cisco noted that it has shipped more than 10,000 CRS systems since 2004.

  • In March 2103, isco showcased its new 100 Gbps, CMOS-based transceiver technology at this week's OFC/NFOEC 2013 event in Anaheim, California. The new technology, which Cisco describes a breakthrough for the rollout of 100G services, is powered by Cisco’s nLight silicon.


By integrating advanced optics in complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, Cisco is able to significantly increase face-plate density for 100G pluggable optics.

The Cisco "CPAK" transceiver, which will initially be available on the Cisco ONS 15454 MSTP 100 G coherent transponder, reduces space and power requirements by over 70 percent compared with alternative transceiver form factors, such as CFP. Future routing and switching line cards will also incorporate CPAK technology.  Cisco’s first line card to incorporate CPAK technology is the 100Gbps CPAK Coherent DWDM line card, compatible with the ONS 15454 MSTP platform.  The card uses Cisco’s 100GE IEEE standards-based LR4, SR10 and ER4 CPAK pluggables on the client interface and Cisco’ ultra long-haul coherent technology on the network facing (trunk) interface.

In addition, Cisco announced that its 100G DWDM powered by nLight technology can cover distances of up to 4,800 km without the need for signal regeneration.  The density of the technology enables 6 x 100G Transponders in a 6 RU chassis, or the equivalent of 8.4 Terabits of I/O in a single rack.



Broadcom's XLP900 Flagship Processor Packs 80 CPUs

Broadcom unveiled its highest performance, multicore processor to date -- the XLP900 Series, packing 80NX CPUs on a single die for 160 Gbps performance.  The new XLP900 Series is optimized for deployment of network functions such as hardware acceleration, virtualization and deep packet inspection.

Broadcom's XLP900 Series, which is implemented in 28nm, extends the company's portfolio of multicore processors for networking applications. The new flagship processor features end-to-end virtualization, advanced security capabilities such as deep-packet inspection (DPI), and innovative network and application intelligence technology with wire-speed networking and multi-layer QoS capabilities.

Infinera Architects an Intelligent Transport Network

Infinera outlined its architecture for an Intelligent Transport Network for the Terabit Era.

The company will leverage its photonic integrated circuits, converged OTN switching + WDM transport, 500G super-channels, and next-gen Transport Software Defined Network (SDN) capabilities to enable dynamic carrier infrastructure for cloud-based services and data center connectivity.

Infinera said its Intelligent Transport Network represents an evolution of its Digital Optical Network, which it introduced in 2005, by adding advanced automation and multi-layer resource orchestration controls.

Key elements of the Infinera Intelligent Transport Network include:

  • Scalability: 500 Gbps FlexCoherent super-channels today and designed to scale to terabit super-channels and Terabit Ethernet in the future.

TeliaSonera International Carrier Extends Infinera Infrastructure into Europe

TeliaSonera International Carrier, which has previously deployed Infinera's DTN-X platform across its North American network, is now extending the rollout of Infinera equipment in its European network.  The first route is Stockholm-to-Hamburg, one of the busiest on its European network.

TSIC, which operates a wholly owned fiber optic network connecting 200 Point of Presence (PoPs)) across Europe, North America and Asia, said it chose Infinera in part for the speed in configuring bandwidth for new customers, some of whom are asking for large bandwidth configurations to ready in a matter of days. The Infinera platform has helped TSIC win new customers by its rapid provisioning.

Facebook's Arctic Circle Data Center Boasts 1.07 PUE

Facebook activated its newest data center - Luleå, Sweden, on the Gulf of Bothnia near the Arctic Circle.

Facebook said the new facility, which is powered by locally-generated hydro power, is averaging a PUE of 1.07 in early tests.  The entire data center is based on Open Compute Project designs. Excess heat is used to heat staff offices.

  • The Open Compute Project (OCP), which was launched by Facebook in April 2011, has moved from early design work to seeing the first commercial products based on its specifications hit the open market. 
    Facebook's original idea was to share its specifications for "vanity-free" servers using barebones AMD and Intel motherboards and optimized for low-power in highly dense data centers. 

    The Open Compute Project has evolved to challenge the industry to rethink all aspects of data center design, from motherboards, to storage, I/O, power, cooling and rack design. 

    A big focus is on "breaking the monolith" by developing a next generation "disaggregated rack", where compute, network and storage are separate modules that can be scaled and upgraded independently of other server elements.

  • Orange and NTT are the latest carriers to join the Open Compute Project.
  • During the first 9 months of 2012, Facebook spent $1.0 billion for servers, networking equipment, storage infrastructure and the construction of data centers.  Facebook is accelerating its data center operations to handle the data deluge from a billion users, its growing number of services, the widespread adoption of smartphones, and the fact that 82% of users are outside the United States while most of its data centers are domestic.
  • In 2012, TeliaSonera International Carrier was selected to build and operate a new pan-European managed optical network for Facebook. The multi-terabit optical network will provide Facebook with connectivity between Internet exchange points in multiple European cities and their newest data center on the edge of the Arctic Circle in Luleå, Sweden.

Gigamon Rockets Ahead in IPO - Up 50% on Opening Day

On the first day of public trading, shares of Gigamon (NYSE: GIMO) rose 50% to close at $28.47.  The company offered 6,750,000 shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $19.00 per share.

Gigamon provides intelligent Traffic Visibility Networking solutions for enterprises, data centers and service providers.  The company is based in Milpitas, California.

In April, Gigamon outlined its vision for software-defined monitoring based on a four-layer architecture: a Services Layer, a Management Layer, an Orchestration Layer and an Applications Layer.

Gigamon said its strategy is to develop a unified Visibility Fabric architecture that would ultimately deliver orchestrated visibility across physical, virtual and software-defined networks (SDN).   • The Orchestration Layer will be developed by Gigamon to provide an open environment through a set of forthcoming APIs and SDKs to enable third party development of applications.  
  • The Applications Layer will consist of a set of visibility applications to be developed by Gigamon, as well as through independent software vendors to deliver optimal tool utilization and performance.

AT&T Announces 1,800 Job Openings in Texas

AT&T is seeking applicants for more than 1,800 jobs that are now open throughout Texas. The positions include technicians to help with U-verse installation, customer service representatives for the company's call centers and hundreds of openings at retail stores.

AT&T currently employs more than 35,000 Texans.  From 2010 through 2012, the company invested more than $7.0 billion in its Texas wireless and wireline networks.  In addition, the company is busy with its recently launched Project Velocity IP (VIP), a three-year investment plan to expand and enhance its wireless and wireline IP broadband networks.

Cyan Blue Orbit SDN Ecosystem Ties Network and Data Center Resources

Cyan is conducting a live multi-vendor, SDN demonstration showing how network operators can offer their customers the ability to dynamically spin up data center virtual machines (VMs), along with virtualized network resources, via standard APIs or a web portal.  The demo, which is being held at this week's Interop Tokyo, leverages OpenFlow and extends between an Ethernet-connected private enterprise and a cloud-enabled public or private data center.

Specifically, applications running on an enterprise server dynamically place requests for additional cloud data center virtual machines and associated network resources using OpenStack application program interfaces (APIs) and OpenFlow. Cyan's Blue Planet SDN system services the request on behalf of network resources and proxies the compute and data center network demands to an OpenStack server in the cloud data center. Blue Planet performs all functions necessary to turn up additional services across the multi-vendor carrier network including carrier Ethernet and optical edge devices from Overture and Accedian Networks. The data center instance of OpenStack negotiates with compute resources and with Arista data center switches to allocate the necessary network and compute capacity.

Tokyo-based KVH, a leading provider of integrated IT and network services, is among the carriers interested in delivering this capability to their customers. According to Yoshiyuki Hamada, KVH Vice President of Systems & Technology, “We see SDN service orchestration that includes both data center and network assets as being hugely important not only for KVH but, more importantly, for our customers. For KVH, this obviously improves our competitive differentiation and service profitability. For our customers it means more rapid, flexible, and cost effective services.”

The SDN demonstration includes Accedian Networks' MetroNID GT, Arista's 7050S 10G/40G data center switches and EOS (extensible operating system) software enabled with E-API, OpenFlow and OpenStack Quantum OVS drivers, Canonical's Ubuntu operating system for OpenStack, Cyan' Blue Planet SDN system and Z22 packet-optical transport platforms, Overture Networks' Carrier Ethernet Access Devices, and RYU's OpenFlow controllers.

"What’s really interesting here is the extension of SDN concepts beyond the data center and into the carrier network and enterprise. This closes the loop on service orchestration and also enables much more compelling business models both for data center operators and carriers (or any other network operator). The whole purpose of the Blue Orbit Ecosystem, also announced today, is to test SDN use cases and prove interoperability in multi-vendor environments. The SDN Use Case demonstration here at Interop Tokyo shows this work in action," Tom Corker, stated Cyan vice president of strategy.

The demonstration builds on Cyan's new Blue Orbit ecosystem of software and hardware solutions for multi-vendor software-defined network (SDN) applications.  Initial members of Cyan's Blue Orbit program include: Accedian Networks, Arista Networks, Boundary, Canonical, (the company behind Ubuntu the reference operating system for OpenStack), Embrane, Overture Networks, and RYU (part of NTT Laboratories’ Open Source Software Computing Group).
