Arvig Upgrades with Cyan in Minnesota

Arvig Communications, which serves some 66,000 customers in rural Minnesota, has selected Cyan's packet-optical transport solutions to upgrade its network.

The deployment includes Cyan's Blue Planet, a software-defined network (SDN) system, and Z-Series packet-optical transport platform.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

Interoute's 2012 Revenue Grew 12% Thanks to Enterprise Cloud Services

Interoute Communications reported 2012 top line revenues of €410 million, a 12% increase over the same period in 2011.  The company cited strong growth in sales of its enterprise Cloud and computing services (up 28% from 2011), and increased demand for international pan-European private network services (up 12.5% from 2011).

2012 EBITDA rose 16%, to €79 million for the full year, while profits rose 140% to €18.4 million.

Interoute's infrastructure now encompasses over 60,000 km of lit fibre, 10 hosting data centres and 31 collocation centres, with connections to 140 additional third-party data centres across Europe.

Tehuti Intros Compact 10GbE Card

Tehuti Networks introduced a 10GbE adapter with integrated 10GBase-T support.

The company said its card, which it believes to be the smallest in the industry, offers a low-power, small form factor and low-cost 10GbE solution enabling 10GBase-T connectivity. It hosts the latest Tehuti TN4010 controller, an optimized 10GbE controller designed for low-power, low-cost, single-port applications required in application servers, high-end workstations and personal computers. The TN4010 MAC is paired with the Marvell® Alaska 88X3120 transceiver, a single-port, low-power, high-performance 10GbE PHY, to enable tri-speed connectivity (10GBase-T, 1000Base-T and 100Base-TX) over low-cost standard CAT-6a Ethernet cabling, supporting up to 100m. (Cat-5e and CAT-6 are supported compliant to link segment specifications.)

Infonetics Forecasts Small Cell Market to Hit $2.7B in '17

The global small cell market to grow from a very small base now to $2.7 billion by 2017, according to a new forecast from Infonetics. Given the current pace of LTE rollouts worldwide, 4G small cell shipments are anticipated to overtake 3G shipments by the end of 2013.

“2013 is shaping up as a kick-off year for small cells, driven by 4G small cells deployed for capacity upgrades,” expects Stéphane Téral, principal analyst for mobile infrastructure and carrier economics at Infonetics Research. “AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless in the U.S., Vodafone in Europe, LG U+ in South Korea, and NTT DOCOMO in Japan have all announced major small cell plans, driven by the need to enhance the capacity of saturated macrocellular networks as they seek to deliver denser, higher-capacity coverage to tech-savvy populations in urban areas.”

Some highlights of the report:

  • South Korea’s SK Telecom has deployed close to 40,000 small cells and is the leading adopter of 4G public access femtocells to date.
  • Backhaul is no longer an inhibitor to small cell growth, but could remain an issue depending on factors such as location or mobile operator.
  • Geographically, Infonetics expects Asia Pacific to lead the small cell market in 2013 with 50% of all units shipped, followed by EMEA with 34%, and North America with 14%.

Apple Data Centers Now 100% on Renewable Power

Apple's data centers are now 100% powered by renewable energy.

In a blog posting last week, Apple announced that its flagship data center in Maiden, North Carolina, boasts the nation’s largest end user–owned, onsite solar photovoltaic array -- a 100-acre, 20-megawatt (MW) facility with  an annual production capacity of 42 million kWh.  Apple is currently building a second 20-MW solar photovoltaic facility on nearby land that should be operational in late 2013.  Apple has also built an onsite 10-MW fuel cell installation that uses directed biogas and provides more than 83 million kWh of 24/7 baseload renewable energy annually.  In total, Apple will be producing 167 million kWh of onsite renewal energy.  The Maiden data center has earned LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Apple's older data center in Newark, California is now using 100% renewable electricity sourced from wind farms in California.  New data centers under construction in Prineville, Oregon and Reno, Nevada will also use renewable energy.

Apple Acquires WiFiSlam for Indoor Location Tracking

Apple has acquired WiFiSlam, a start-up developing indoor location tracking technology, for $20 million, according The Wall Street Journal.

WiFiSlam is based in Palo Alto, California.

IBM Extends its Social Business Platform with Social Email

IBM is extending its social business platform with an integrated social email.

The idea is to turm email from a client application used only for mail to a core component of a platform that drives knowledge sharing, workforce productivity and overall business value.

A single interface could be used to check email as well as activity streams containing the latest work from each team member, share files with colleagues, and view new blogs on topics relevant to the subject.

In addition, users have access to the same content all through their mobile device, including iPhones, Android devices, Windows Phone or the new BlackBerry 10.

Huawei Announces LTE Small Cell Router

 Huawei introduced an LTE small cell router. The new ATN 905 is designed to help small base stations obtain high-rate media access across a variety of scenarios, allowing operators to ex. tend their backhaul network coverage.

The unit is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It supports any media access, including Fiber, GPON and xDSL, to offer additional resources for the existing network. The ATN 905 supplies power through Ethernet ports to overcome the many issues associated with powering small base stations and also supports plug-and-play and remote service deployment to ease operation.

Huawei said its new LTE small cell router can provide an end-to-end IP RAN mobile backhaul solution with existing ATN products.

The ATN 905 also offer OAM (Operations, Administration and Management) functions that can be used to monitor Ethernet faults, allowing operators to quickly locate faults in VIP private line services.

JDSU Adds OTDR Module for Ultra Long Haul Testing

JDSU introduced a new OTDR module for its T-BERD/MTS-6000 and T-BERD/MTS-8000 V2 analyzers.  The new module expands the EVO family of tests solutions to very long and ultra-long-haul networks.

Specifically, the 8100D module covers ultra-long distances with true 50 dB dynamic range and optimal linearity over the entire trace. It provides the ability to troubleshoot any network from high splitter count 1x 128 FTTH/PON networks to ultra-long-haul point-to-point links.

Julius Genachowski to Step Down as FCC Chair on

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski announced his plans to step down in the coming weeks.

Genachowski was sworn in as Chairman in June 2009.

Genachowski, who served as technology adviser to the Obama campaign, holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1991), where he studied with Barack Obama. Previously, Genachowski was cofounder and Managing Director of LaunchBox Digital and Rock Creek Ventures, and a Special Advisor at General Atlantic.

Some highlights of FCC actions and U.S. market development over the past four years:

  • Created the Connect America Fund to advance universal broadband access.
  • Pioneered “incentive auctions” to unleash spectrum for mobile broadband.
  • Established the first enforceable rules of the road to preserve Internet freedom and 
  • openness.
  • Opposed AT&T/T-Mobile deal and took other steps to promote competition in the 
  • broadband marketplace.
  • Nearly $250 billion in private capital has been invested in U.S. wired and wireless broadband 
  • networks since 2009. 
  • The U.S. now leads in LTE deployment and adoption at national scale.
  • Annual investment in U.S. wireless networks grew more than 40% between 2009 and 2012, 
  • from $21 billion to $30 billion. By contrast, investment in European wireless networks has 
  • been flat since 2009, and wireless investment in Asia, including China, is up only 4% during 
  • that time. 
  • In 2013, analysts project $35 billion in wireless investment in the U.S., over 50% more than 
  • all of Europe. 
  • More than 90% of smartphones sold globally in 2012 run operating systems developed by 
  • U.S. companies, up from 25% three years ago.

FCC Notifies on 1755-1780 MHz Band Auction Plans

The FCC officially notified the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) at the U.S. Department of Commerce that it plans to commence the auction of licenses in the 1695–1710 MHz band and the 1755–1780 MHz band as early as September 2014.

The FCC is required to give notice at least 18 months prior to the commencement of any spectrum auction.

NTIA recently identified the 1695-1710 MHz band as the 15 megahertz of spectrum between 1675 MHz and 1710 MHz to be reallocated from federal use to non-federal use. The Spectrum Act now requires the Commission to allocate this identified spectrum for commercial use and to license the spectrum by February 2015.

The FCC also noted that Congress has also directed it to license the 2155-2 180 MHz band, and other bands, by February 2015.

  • Last year, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) proposed a spectrum sharing scheme between government and industry.  Specifically, the NTIA determined that 95 megahertz (MHz) of prime spectrum in the 1755 – 1850 MHz band could be repurposed for wireless broadband use. Over 20 federal agencies currently hold more than 3,100 individual frequency assignments in this band. Federal uses of this spectrum include law enforcement surveillance, military tactical communications, air combat training, precision-guided munitions, weather balloons, etc.

MSF: Interoperability Forum Folds, Leaves Impact on Industry

The maturity of today’s multiservice network architecture owes a lot to initiatives like the MultiService Forum (MSF) Global MSF Interoperability (GMI) events over the past decade. These events, in partnership with GSMA, ETSI and ATIS, provided an effective vehicle for bringing together service providers and equipment suppliers to conduct proof of concept testing for emerging technologies. The MSF didn't initially conduct interoperability testing, but it quickly emerged as the unifying theme for everything the forum did. Here we review how the focus on interoperability emerged, the factors that contributed to the success of the interoperability program, and the reasons the MSF has deciding to close at this time.  

MSF’s Formative Years

The year was 1998, and the technology world was at war; Bellheads vs. Netheads. The Netheads believed the Internet had changed everything, and the old rules no longer applied. Bellheads believed IP could never deliver the quality and reliability that users demanded. It was before that great equalizer – reality - proved them both wrong. Before the Internet bubble burst. Before Broadband Internet was the norm. The MSF began in a world very different from the one we know today.

The inaugural meeting of the MSF in December 1998 brought together key service providers, system suppliers and test equipment vendors committed to developing and promoting open-architecture, multiservice Next Generation Networks. This commitment shaped the MSF:

  • Open-architecture encourages innovation, but complicates interoperability. Rigorous testing ensures the standards are accurate and complete.
  • Multiservice networks offer flexibility, but that very flexibility complicates testing unless a realistic network configuration is provided. 
  • Next Generation Networks introduce a new architecture that must be tested as an end-to-end network. 
Viewed through this lens, the MSF focus on interoperability testing isn’t surprising. 

Global MSF Interoperability (GMI)

In 2000, the market collapsed, and greed changed to fear. Next generation network architectures were complex and unproven. Interoperability testing was expensive, and repeating the tests in every carrier lab compounded the problem. This insight was the impetus for the first Global MSF Interoperability (GMI) event, with equipment in Europe, North America and Asia networked to form a single, global interoperability test bed. Three carriers - BT, NTT and Qwest – along with a dozen equipment vendors participated in the first event. GMI provided a valuable “proof of concept” test for critical interface standards and demonstrated the maturity of the next generation network architecture. GMI testing didn’t replace detailed “plugfest” testing focussed on a single interface. It didn’t replace vendor regression testing or carrier acceptance testing. Instead, GMI played a complementary role by validating the architecture and the standards.

The MSF held four GMI events from 2002 to 2008, introducing additional functionality with each event:
  • GMI 2002 validated the H.248 Media Gateway Controller protocol, decoupling service logic from the media gateway;
  • GMI 2004 added SIP trunking between H.248 based softswitches and saw KT join the list of participating carriers;
  • GMI 2006 introduced IMS, and included equipment in BT, KT, NTT, and Verizon labs; and
  • GMI 2008 added IMS services and saw participation by BT, China Mobile, National Communications System (NCS), the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Lab, Verizon and Vodafone, along with 22 network and test equipment vendors. For the first time ever, the MSF also partnered with another standards organization, validating key IPTV standards developed by ATIS. 

The Post-GMI Years

The original mission, validating open-architecture, multiservice, Next Generation Networks, had been achieved, but the MSF membership proposed smaller-scale interoperability testing in two additional areas; LTE and IP Interconnection. 

LTE: Standards for LTE include a new data architecture; the Enhanced Packet Core (EPC). The MSF conducted three LTE/EPC interoperability tests (IOT), with each event expanding the scope of testing.

  • LTE/EPC IOT (2010) focused on core components in the LTE/EPC network.
  • LTE VoLTE IOT (2011) introduced a key service, Voice over LTE (VoLTE), and validated key GSMA specifications for VoLTE in a joint MSF/GSMA event.
  • RCS/VoLTE IOT (2012), conducted jointly with GSMA and ETSI, introduced Rich Communication Services (RCS) to validate a complete LTE service scenario. 
Taken together, these three IOT events provided a complete proof of concept test for LTE/EPC, VoLTE and RCS services.

IP Interconnect: A significant portion of traffic between networks is still based on legacy TDM interfaces at the Network-Network Interface (NNI). IP interconnection exists, but is still complex. The MSF launched a series of test events to validate the enabling IP interconnect standards.

  • IP-IOT (2010) focussed on performance monitoring and reporting at the IP NNI.
  • ETS-NNI IOT (2013) validated standards for Emergency Telecommunications Service (ETS) across an IP-NNI. 

Success Factors

The success of the MSF interoperability program was driven by several factors.

Carrier driven: MSF interoperability events were built around major carrier procurement programs and held primarily in carrier labs. Vendors gained visibility with potential customers, and carriers assessed overall product maturity. It was a formula that drove both carrier and vendor interest in GMI.

Realistic Network Testing: The MSF was unique in assembling complete networks for interoperability events, enabling proof of concept testing for next generation network architectures.

Testing the Standards: GMI events tested the standards, as much as the products, sometimes uncovering errors or ambiguities in the underlying specifications. Improving the standards made a lasting contribution to the industry.

Cooperation: The MSF sought to cooperate with other forums rather than compete.


In February, the MSF membership voted to dissolve the forum.

Why make this decision immediately following another successful interoperability event? It had a lot to do with the MSF mission and mindset. The MSF focussed on gaps not addressed by other forums, for example, developing Implementation Agreements (IA) to improve interoperability by narrowing options and resolving ambiguities in existing standards. As interoperable standards matured, the need for IAs decreased and eventually disappeared. Similarly, the maturity of multiservice networks is removing the need for further large scale, global interoperability events. Interoperability testing will increasingly focus on specific markets or standards.


The MSF brought together key service providers, system suppliers and test equipment vendors committed to developing and promoting open-architecture, multiservice Next Generation Networks. The MSF’s work contributed to the maturity of multiservice network architectures, which changed the nature of interoperability testing. Recognizing this change, the MSF opted to close the forum.

The MSF leaves a legacy of interoperability scenarios, test configurations, test plans and event results that will be released for unrestricted use.   All MSF technical documents can be found at:

Mission Statement of the MSF

The MultiService Forum (MSF) is a global association of service providers, system suppliers and test equipment vendors committed to developing and promoting open-architecture, multiservice Next Generation Networks. The MSF, in partnership with GSMA, ETSI and ATIS, conducted a number of global interoperability events focussing on next generation technologies including SIP, IMS, IPTV, LTE, VoLTE and RCS. The events were hosted in leading service provider labs, and attracted wide participation from the telecommunications vendor community. 

IBM Discovers Atomic Technique to Charge Memory Chips

Researchers at IBM have discovered a new technique to charge memory chips by manipulating tiny ionic currents.

The discovery could pave the way for a new class of non-volatile memory and logic chips that would use less power than today's silicon based devices.

IBM has demonstrated that it is possible to reversibly transform metal oxides between insulating and conductive states by the insertion and removal of oxygen ions driven by electric fields at oxide-liquid interfaces. The company said its experiments show that the materials maintain a stable metallic state even when power to the device is removed.

"Our ability to understand and control matter at atomic scale dimensions allows us to engineer new materials and devices that operate on entirely different principles than the silicon based information technologies of today," said Dr. Stuart Parkin, an IBM Fellow at IBM Research. "Going beyond today's charge-based devices to those that use miniscule ionic currents to reversibly control the state of matter has the potential for new types of mobile devices. Using these devices and concepts in novel three-dimensional architectures could prevent the information technology industry from hitting a technology brick wall."

IBM's research is published in the peer-reviewed journal Science.

NTT DOCOMO Tests Solar Base Stations

NTT DOCOMO is launching field tests of three conventional mobile-network base stations that have been installed with solar panels, high capacity rechargeable batteries and green power controllers.

NTT DOCOMO will install 10 green base stations in the Kanto-Koshinetsu region of Japan by late summer, including the first three in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Yamanashi prefectures. The equipment was already by tested at its R&D Center from March 2012 to February 2013. 

The green base stations use solar panels to generate and store solar power during the daytime. If commercial power supply is cut off during a disaster, the station can rely solely on this power to run communication equipment during the day and use high-capacity, rechargeable batteries to store 14-16 hours’ worth of power when solar power is not available.

The solar panels to be used in the field test generate up to 4.19 kW, whereas the maximum power consumption of a base station is 2.0 kW. Remotely controlled green power controllers will manage power used by the base stations, including utility-provided electricity, solar panel-generated electricity, and high-capacity, rechargeable batteries that discharge their energy as required.

The company said its interest in disaster-proof, environmentally friendly base stations was spurred by the Great East Japan Earthquake.  NTT DOCOMO is also considering fuel cell technologies and wind-powered base stations.

NTT Comm Selects ALU's 7750 Edge Router

NTT Communications has selected Alcatel-Lucent's 7750 Service Router for its VPN enterprise services in Japan and worldwide.

Previously such services were supported by independent networks, but the move to a single, converged IP infrastructure provided by Alcatel-Lucent will simplify and streamline network management, cut the cost of network operations and help lower NTT Com's operational expenditure through a measurable decrease in energy consumption.

"In 2010 we deployed Alcatel-Lucent's service routers in the network that serves our international business customers, so the transformation of our network in Japan is a natural progression in this successful collaboration. Alcatel-Lucent's dedication to continuously enhancing their platforms with the very latest capabilities gives us the confidence that this new network will be able to address the fast-evolving expectations of our customers far into the future," Hiroshi Sono, Director of Technology, Network Services division of NTT Com.

MetroPCS Stockholders to vote on T-Mobile Deal on April 12

MetroPCS stockholders are expected to vote on April 12, 2013 on the proposed combination of MetroPCS with T-Mobile.  The deal has already cleared all regulatory reviews.  If the stockholders approve, the merger will be completed soon thereafter.

Broadcom Adds Internet Streaming to Cable Set-top Boxes

Broadcom introduced two low cost, high definition (HD) digital cable set-top box SoCs with integrated Full-Band Capture and IP video server technology.

The new devices, which are aimed at entry-level HD and HD-DVR platforms for cable MSOs, support Internet video streaming capabilities to multiple video devices simultaneously.  The SoCs integrate a high-performance CPU, 3D graphics and Full-Band Capture technologies.  In addition, the new STB SoCs also provide state-of-the-art Conditional Access (CA) and Digital Rights Management (DRM) security, enabling the conversion of content from CA to an IP-DRM streaming content.

Communications Workers of America Reject Contract with AT&T West

Wireline employees represented by the Communications Workers of America District 9 rejected a new labor contract that had been negotiated by the union and AT&T West.  The contract would have covered more than 17,000 AT&T employees in California and Nevada.

AT&T said it regretted this outcome as the new contract would have provided annual wage and pension increases.  Similar contracts had been accepted by CWA membership in other areas of the country.

AT&T said it will go back to the bargaining table.
