Juniper and NSN Partner on Packet Transport Networking

Juniper Networks and Nokia Siemens Networks are teaming up to offer an "Integrated Packet Transport Network" solution to help simplify carrier architecture by integrating multiple layers. The solution is comprised of the Juniper Networks PTX Packet Transport Switches and the Nokia Siemens Networks hiT 7300 high capacity optical packet transport platform, thereby integrating the IP/MPLS and DWDM layers with a common control plane.


At this week's OFC/NFOEC Conference, Juniper Networks will showcase the PTX 100G LH transponders interworking with the hiT7300 platform. The integration aims to reduce the amount of hardware needed in the network and hence lower both capital and operational costs. The planned feature set includes: network management integration, including service provisioning, optical transport control plane integration based on GMPLS and UNI+, end-to-end network planning for guaranteed performance and SLAs, and L0-L3 multi-layer optimization.


The packet layer of the solution is based on Juniper Networks PTX Series Packet Transport Switches, a portfolio of high-performance platforms optimized for MPLS and Ethernet. The PTX Series is a Label Switched Router for the service provider supercore optimized for capacity and efficiency.


Nokia Siemens Networks hiT 7300 at the optical layer is a 96-channel optical packet transport platform that is optimized for high-capacity transport in multi-haul networks. It is designed and optimized for bit rates from 2.5 Gbps to 100 Gbps per wavelength, and is 400 Gbps ready.

Opnext Ships QSFP+ 40GBASE-LR4 Transceiver

Opnext has begun commercial shipments of its QSFP+ 40GBASE-LR4 transceiver for data center and enterprise networks.


Opnext said its QSFP+ 40GBASE-LR4 transceiver offers up to 100 times the reach of current QSFP+ SR4 solutions while improving on industry metrics as compared to the CFP form factor—power consumption is reduced by more than 50 percent and almost 80 percent less faceplate surface area is occupied.

Broadcom Intros Dual, Quad, and Octal 10GbE and 40GbE PHYs

Broadcom has added four new physical layer transceivers (PHYs) to its portfolio of 10 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 40GbE high-speed Ethernet products for optical fiber communications. The new SFP+ physical layer transceivers (PHYs) include a variety of dual, quad and octal-channel devices for data center and enterprise networks, enabling the transition from 1GbE to 10GbE and 40GbE, and are based on advanced 40nm CMOS architecture. All four devices feature Broadcom's fourth generation of EDC technology, enabling data transmission on a 10GbE or 40GbE serial interface. This feature is ideal for applications requiring transmission over multimode fiber (MMF) at distances up to 300m (LRM) using OM3 fiber and SFP+ copper twin-axial cable (CR). Sampling is underway.

ECI and MultiPhy Pioneer "Direct Detect" 100G Metro Technology

ECI Telecom and MultiPhy, which specializes in DSP-based high bandwidth CMOS communications semiconductors, have collaborated to develop a low-cost, metro 100G transport solution as an alternative to costly coherent technologies.


With funding from the Israeli Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS), and based on a Ben-Gurion University project, ECI and MultiPhy have leveraged a Direct Detect transmission methodology to enable 100G links over metro distances. MultiPhy's new MP1100Q Direct Detect receiver, which can fit seamlessly with existing Metropolitan Optical Networks, paves the way for transport modules using low-cost, reduced bandwidth optical subcomponents.


The companies said this technology enables the transport of 100G signals for hundreds of kilometers in metro WDM networks over 4 lanes, 28Gbps each, using 4x10G optical transceivers. Each lane is transmitted over an independent WDM wavelength or over 25GHz sub-wavelength, allocated in a single 100GHz wavelength or a dual 50GHz wavelength.


MultiPhy will showcase the ECI 168PIN MSA design utilizing the MP1100Q receiver at this week's OFC/NFOEC in Los Angeles, California (booth #2163)

SingTel Acquires Amobee for Mobile Advertising

Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) agreed to acquire U.S.-based Amobee, a premium provider of mobile advertising solutions to operators, publishers and advertisers globally, for about US$321 million.




SingTel said its ambition is to change the game by delivering next generation relationship marketing tools for brands to give them more scope to deepen their one-on-one engagement with different audiences across different countries.

Sensory's Pattern Matching Pushes DPI to 160 Gbps

Sensory Networks announced a new benchmark for its pattern matching software for accelerating deep packet inspection (DPI) platforms.


Sensory's HyperScan library has delivered DPI throughput of 160Gbps with linear scalability, based on an intensive benchmark of HyperScan on a dual-socket platform (8-core, 16 threads per socket) using the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 family and Intel C604 chipset, scanning against a tier-1 commercial IPS signature set. Infinera Lands Cable&Wireless Worldwide for its New DTN-X Multiterabit

Cable&Wireless Worldwide (CWW) will deploy Infinera’s new DTN-X platform for its Europe Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) network. The selection represents a major win for Infinera and its multi-terabit class Digital Optical Network solution with super-channel capability.


Cable&Wireless Worldwide's forthcoming EPEG network will provide geographic diversity and high-capacity for network traffic between Europe, the Middle East and India. Currently, the majority of traffic traverses fiber running through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. The route could be a single point of failure impacting multiple cable systems should a natural disaster or manmade event occur in this narrow channel.


EPEG will stretch approximately 10,000 kms from Frankfurt in Germany to Oman with the unique attribute of having only 246 kms of undersea cable and all other routes terrestrial. Cable&Wireless Worldwide has a number of partners collaborating on this project.


CWW’s multiterabit EPEG optical network will use Infinera’s Digital Optical Network solution, powered by Infinera’s DTN-X, which includes the latest 500 Gbps photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The Infinera DTN-X delivers 500 Gb/s FlexCoherent super-channels and is upgradeable to 1 Tbps super-channels in the future, providing scalability with investment protection. The platform integrates 5 Tbps of OTN switching which will enable CWW to efficiently converge layers of the network resulting in reduced capital and operational expenses. Furthermore, Infinera’s intelligent GMPLS automation software will enable CWW to rapidly provision highly-reliable low-latency services, including 100 Gbps Ethernet, making it highly competitive across the Europe to Asia route.

  • In September 2011, Infinera introduced its third generation, 500 Gbps photonic integrated circuit (PIC) -- the foundation for its new DTN-X multi-terabit switching platform designed for scaling core networks. The 500 Gbps PIC integrates more than 600 optical functions and works by converting light waves into electrical circuits, which can then be switched and groomed with digital signal processing.


    The DTN-X combines three core functions-- a) a DWDM transmission system, offering 500 Gig super-channels based upon 100 Gig coherent channels, b) an OTN switch that scales from 5 Tbps non-blocking at ODU 0 today to 100-terabit non-blocking in the future; and c) a platform that can be upgraded to MPLS in the future.


    Infinera believes that these key innovations will lead to the next economic disruption in the network, as very large pools of bandwidth can now be easily created, directed and managed across a fiber network. The 500 Gbps super-channel capability is unique in the industry and Infinera plans to support 1 Tbps super-channels in the future with another new PIC which is already in the lab.


    The DTN-X combines PICs, custom ASICs and GMPLS software to deliver 5 Tbps of non-blocking, ITU G.709 Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching in a single bay for grooming traffic onto larger 100 Gbps and 500 Gbps pipes to maximize network utilization. Future iterations of the platform will be upgradeable to resilient multi-bay configurations providing 100 Tbps of non-blocking OTN and MPLS switching.


    The embedded GMPLS software provides automatic topology discovery an inventory management. It also enables point and click end-to-end service provisioning, as well as <50ms hardware based protection for mesh & ring configurations.


    The new DTN-X is interoperable with Infinera's existing DTN platform and is planned to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE), 40 Gigabit Ethernet (40 GbE), 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100 GbE), 10 Gbps SONET/SDH/OTN, 40 Gbps SONET/SDH/OTN, 100 Gbps OTN, 8/10 Gbps Fibre Channel, and multiple bit rate clear-channel interfaces.

Polatis Debuts 192x192 Optical Matrix Switch

Polatis, a start-up based in Andover, Mass., unveiled its new Series 6000 Optical Matrix Switch - a fully non-blocking, all-optical singlemode fiber cross-connect for up to 192x192 fiber ports with less than 1dB typical optical loss. The new optical switch could be used in a range of applications ranging from secure government communications to data center virtualization, broadcast video distribution, satellite RF/optical link management, network testing.


Polatis features a unique, patented DirectLight beam-steering technology which uses piezoelectric actuators to connect light directly between switch ports to achieve the best possible optical performance independent of the color, direction or power level of light on the fiber path.


The new Series 6000 doubles the maximum matrix size previously available from Polatis (96x96 ports). The modular design of the Series 6000 allows both symmetric (NxN) and asymmetric (MxN) matrix configurations as well as a versatile customer-configurable option allowing any-to-any fiber connections. The switch can also be used to enhance network availability by enabling fast automatic recovery from network equipment or fiber failures. The Polatis DirectLight technology allows optical connections to be established with or without light on the fiber, enabling pre-provisioning of dark fiber paths for disaster recovery, M:N protection switching, and intelligent network monitoring and test.


Production shipments commence in the second quarter of 2012.

VSG: 2011 Global Provider Ethernet LEADERBOARD

Vertical Systems Group published its 2011 Global Provider Ethernet Leaderboard, which ranks companies with four percent (4%) or more of retail business Ethernet ports installed at sites outside of the provider's primary home country.


The Leaderboard includes the following providers (in rank order based on port share): Orange Business (France), Verizon (U.S.), Colt (U.K.), AT&T (U.S.), NTT (Japan), Level 3 / Global Crossing (U.S.) and BT Global (U.K.).

Deutsche Telekom Hits Top Speed of 512 Gbps in Single Wavelength


Researchers at Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs) announced a new record -- 512 Gbps in a single optical-fiber wavelength channel over a distance of 734 km (Berlin - Hanover - Berlin). Alcatel-Lucent served as the key technology partner.


Deutsche Telekom said the experimental system was tested in the real world conditions of its network.


Specifically, the Telekom OSIRIS (Optically Supported IP Router Interfaces) research project realized transmission at a speed of 512Gbps (400 Gbps usable bit rate) on a 100 GHz wavelength channel over a distance of 734 km, thus demonstrating a spectral sensitivity of 5 bits/s/Hz in the Deutsche Telekom network. The system used transmission technology with two carrier frequencies, two polarization planes, 16-QAM quadrature amplitude modulation and digital offline signal processing for the equalization of fiber influences with soft-FEC forward error correction decoding in the receiver. The WDM transmission link consisted of a total of 14 standard single-mode fiber sections with dispersion compensation as required for the neighboring conventional 10 Gbps channels.

NTT Com Launches Own Fiber Net in Indonesia

NTT Indonesia launched its own fiber-optic network service in the East Jakarta Industrial Park. The service, which uses a fiber-optic network constructed and managed by NTT Indonesia, enables multinational customers based in the industrial park to use high-quality, large-capacity fiber-optic access lines to connect to their global offices or global cloud platforms via NTT Indonesia’s nearest point of presence.


The company hopes to build, operate and maintain additional fiber-optic networks in other locations in Indonesia, including other industrial parks and office buildings.

UK Broadband Activates LTE TDD 3.5GHz in London with Huawei

UK Broadband switched on its first 4G LTE system in London using TD-LTE technology in the 3.5GHz band.


UKB will operate a wholesale model, working with partners to offer commercial services from May 2012 to businesses, consumers and the public sector. The network will initially cover the Southbank and Borough areas of Southwark.


The network will use UKB’s 124MHz of spectrum in LTE bands 42 and 43 (3.5GHz and 3.6GHz). This allows the deployment of 6 x 20MHz wide channels that will enable UKB to deliver LTE Advanced speeds and enough capacity across the network to deliver Next Generation Access superfast broadband speeds to a large number of users simultaneously.


The first devices, jointly developed by UKB and Huawei, include indoor and outdoor units for high-speed wireless broadband to homes and businesses within the coverage area. Multi-mode mobile devices supporting TD-LTE, FD-LTE and 3G will be available from September 2012.


Huawei noted that this is the first LTE TDD 3.5GHz deployment in the world and the first commercial LTE TDD deployment in the UK.

TELUS Announces $3 Billion Investments in B.C.

TELUS announced plans to invest C$3 billion in advanced technology and state-of-the-art facilities over the next three years in British Columbia. The money will be spent to expand TELUS’ advanced wireless and wireline broadband networks across the province and the construction of TELUS Garden, a LEED platinum office and residential development in downtown Vancouver .This includes the expansion of the new 4G LTE wireless network from Vancouver to more than four million British Columbians in 20 communities this year alone – close to 90 per cent of the province’s population.

Hi3G Chooses ZTE for LTE in Sweden

Hi3G has selected ZTE to deliver the next stage of its LTE infrastructure rollout in Sweden.


ZTE has delivered and installed the first stage of the network since it was first announced in March 2011. In this phase , ZTE will deliver the SDR-based infrastructure equipment to upgrade the operator's 3G network in Sweden.


The Hi3G network delivers a mix of FDD-LTE 800MHz and UMTS 900MHz services across southern Sweden, with TDD-LTE spectrum also being used in high demand areas including the major cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo.


Jörgen Askeroth, CTO of Hi3G, commented: “TDD-LTE gives us great capability to provide the best possible network capacity where demand is high, but we also have FDD-LTE because we believe that not all devices will support TDD in the future, and of course we have to support all users."


ZTE noted that its has worked on more than 30 commercial LTE projects with over 100 operators around the globe, including high-end markets including Spain, the United States and Hong Kong, with established operators such as Telenor, CSL (in the Telstra Group), Etisalat, SingTel, Commnet Wireless/NTUA and China Mobile.
