AT&T Opens Collaboration Center in Palo Alto

AT&T has opened its newest "Foundry" innovation centers in Palo Alto, California.


The Palo Alto center, sponsored by Ericsson, is the third permanent AT&T Foundry facility to open worldwide, adding to a global network that includes facilities sponsored by Alcatel-Lucent and Amdocs in Plano, Texas, and Ra'anana, Israel, respectively. The new location will join two temporary facilities in the Bay Area where collaborative projects are already underway, many on display during today's opening day festivities.

AT&T said projects are funneled to the Foundry in several ways:


Fast Pitch, or "speed date" reviews, where companies or developers meet with key AT&T decision makers to evaluate projects or technologies. AT&T is on track to hold 400 of the fast-pitch sessions in locations across the globe this year.


The Innovation Pipeline (TIP), AT&T's crowd-sourcing idea-generating platform, where more than 100,000 employees gather to share ideas and collaborate on bringing new products and services to market.


AT&T Labs provides the starting point for many AT&T Foundry projects. Many of the organization's 1,200 researchers also provide expertise to projects currently underway.

FCC Kicks Off Test of TV White Spaces Database System

The FCC will kick off a 45-day public trial of Spectrum Bridge's TV band database system on September 19.


The intent of the trial is to allow the public to access and test Spectrum Bridge's database system to
ensure that it correctly identifies channels that are available for unlicensed TV band devices, properly
registers those facilities entitled to protection, and provides protection to authorized services and registered
facilities as specified in the rules. Participants are encouraged to test the channel availability calculator; the cable headend and broadcast auxiliary temporary receive site registration utilities; and the wireless microphone
registration utility to ensure that each of these elements of the database system is working properly and
providing the interference protection required under our rules.

  • In July 2011, The IEEE published the 802.22 standard for Wireless Regional Area Networks (WRANs) using the favorable transmission characteristics of the VHF and UHF TV bands. 802.22 enables broadband wireless access over a large area up to 100 km from the transmitter. The standard specifies up to 22 Mbps per channel without interfering with reception of existing TV broadcast stations, using the so-called white spaces between the occupied TV channels.


    IEEE 802.22 incorporates advanced cognitive radio capabilities including dynamic spectrum access, incumbent database access, accurate geolocation techniques, spectrum sensing, regulatory domain dependent policies, spectrum etiquette, and coexistence for optimal use of the available spectrum. It operates generally in the 54-862 MHz range. For the United States, it specifies the following VHF / UHF Bands54 – 60, 76 – 88, 174 – 216, 470 - 608 and 614 –698 MHz => Total of 282 MHz or 47 Channels.


  • In September 2010, The FCC issued an order that opens up vacant airwaves between TV channels for new unlicensed applications such as "super Wi-Fi." Specifically, a Second Memorandum Opinion and Order (Second MO&O) resolves numerous legal and technical issues regarding unlicensed spectrum usage. Notably, the Order eliminates the requirement that TV bands devices that incorporate geo-location and database access must also include sensing technology to detect the signals of TV stations and low-power auxiliary service stations (wireless microphones). It also requires wireless microphone users who seek to register in the TV bands databases to certify that they will use all available channels from 7 through 51 prior to requesting registration. Requests to register in the database will be public, thus allowing interested parties to weigh in on any given request.


    The FCC order also includes steps to ensure that incumbent services are protected from interference from the use of white spaces in various ways. This includes reserving two vacant UHF channels for wireless microphones and other low power auxiliary service devices in all areas of the country.

Canada's Bell Mobility Launches LTE Service

Bell Mobility officially launched its LTE network service in some of Canada's most populous urban areas, including Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph.


Bell Mobility is supporting downlink speeds as fast as 75 Mbps with typical speeds ranging between 12 and 25 Mbps. The carrier expects that as the LTE standard and products evolve, speeds will increase to as fast as 150 Mbps. Bell's 4G LTE network is also the first and only Canadian 4G network to switch to the next fastest speed available when outside LTE areas, either Bell's Dual Carrier HSPA+ providing peak speeds up to 42 Mbps (typical between 7 and 14 Mbps) or HSPA+ offering speeds up to 21 Mbps (typical between 3.5 and 8 Mbps). Bell is offering Dual Carrier HSPA+ to approximately 70% of the Canadian population. Bell offers total HSPA+ coverage to more than 96% of Canadians.


Roll-out to additional Canadian markets will happen this year and through 2012. Bell is focused on an urban rollout first, with the timing of broader rural and remote coverage deployments contingent on the outcome of Industry Canada's 700 MHz spectrum auction.


Key network infrastructure suppliers for Bell's LTE network include Cisco, Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks.


Bell noted that it is investing $3 billion per year in its network - more than any other communications company in the country. Bell's total Research & Development investments increased in 2010 (the latest period for which figures are available), surpassing $800 million.


The 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 Turbo Stick is available in select Bell stores beginning on September 14; for online purchase for CAD$79.95 on a three-year term (CAD$219.95 with no term contract); and in Bell stores across LTE service areas on September 15. In coming weeks, Bell will add the 4G LTE Novatel Wireless U679 Turbo Stick. 4G LTE flex-rate data plans start at CAD$45 a month for 1.5 GB which automatically adjusts based on data usage.

Huawei Lands 2 SingleRAN Deployments in USA

Huawei Technologies announced two deployments of its SingleRAN infrastructure products in the U.S.: United Wireless and SpeedConnect.


United Wireless, which is based in Kansas. is using the Huawei SingleRAN to replace its existing network. The Huawei SingleRAN solution will include LTE and CDMA . Huawei will be wholly responsible for the new network, which includes deploying its 4G LTE network and upgrading its existing 3G networking.


SpeedConnect, which serves Michigan, chose Huawei to deploy its 4G network. The network will provide up to 10Mbps x 2Mbps connections with the Huawei SingleRAN solution, which includes LTE and WiMAX technology.

China Mobile and Clearwire Collaborate on TD-LTE Devices

China Mobile and Clearwire announced a collaboration to accelerate the development of TD-LTE devices. Specifically, the carriers will work jointly to further accelerate the time-to-market availability of high volume TD-LTE chipsets and devices that should be commercially available starting in 2012. In addition, the two companies will collaborate to enable worldwide data roaming among TD-LTE, FDD-LTE and other 2G/3G networks.


Both carriers support the global 2.5 GHz spectrum band for 4G deployments along with many other operators around the
world. To date, both China Mobile and Clearwire have conducted successful TD-LTE trials and tests using commercially
available/production-ready TD-LTE devices from numerous vendors.


"The availability and cost of TD-LTE devices are critical success factors for operators to deploy TD-LTE networks," said Mr. Jianzhou Wang, Chairman of China Mobile Communications Corporation. "The cooperation with Clearwire will leverage economies of scale in the two largest markets in the world to speed up the development of TD-LTE devices.   • In August 2011, Clearwire confirmed its intention to deploy "LTE Advanced-ready" technology in its 4G network while restating its commitment to its existing 4G WiMAX network, which covers approximately 132 million people while serving 7.65 million retail and wholesale customers. The company expects to end 2011 with approximately 10 million 4G customers. Clearwire said the initial LTE deployment will target densely populated, urban areas of its existing 4G markets where current 4G usage demands are high.


    Clearwire said its LTE network will be "LTE Advanced-ready," meaning that it will use spectrum configurations capable of 100+ Mbps downlink speeds. The LTE implementation plan, which is subject to additional funding, contemplates deploying Time Division Duplex (TDD) LTE technology. The plan calls for upgrading the all-IP network architecture and base station radios, as well as some core network elements. The LTE overlay will include the use of multicarrier, or multichannel, wideband radios that will be carrier aggregation capable. Carrier aggregation is a key feature of LTE Advanced that will enable Clearwire to further leverage its spectrum depth to create larger "fat pipes" for deploying mobile broadband service. Clearwire holds an average of 160 MHz of spectrum nationwide, more than AT&T and T-Mobile together, in one contiguous band, enabling wider channels for high-bandwidth applications.


  • Also in August 2011, Clearwire confirmed that it is looking for $600 million in new funding for the LTE rollout. It is also seeking $150-350 million as working capital to support its existing operations.


  • In August 2010, Clearwire began testing coexistence scenarios for WiMAX and LTE in Phoenix using both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) of 40 MHz of spectrum paired in 2 x 20 MHz contiguous channels ("LTE 2X"), and Time Division Duplex (TDD) configurations using 20 MHz of spectrum. Initial tests have recently confirmed that the company's LTE 2X trial network achieved peak download speeds on commercially available equipment and devices in excess of 90 Mbps and upload speeds of more than 30 Mbps. Clearwire expects to conclude the tests in Q1 2011. The company later updated the test reports noting consistent 120 Mbps downlinks using TDD-LTE.

Telefónica Launches LTE in Madrid and Barcelona

Telefónica launched its first, pre-commercial LTE services in Madrid and Barcelona to large clients and institutions. The service is using 2.6 GHz spectrum and offers downlink speeds of 30 Mbps using USB modems. Telefónica is preparing for a wider LTE rollout in Spain supporting downlink rates up to 100 Mbps.


Telefónica is pricing the initial LTE service under its EUR 45 per month plan, which has a 10GB data cap.


Alcatel-Lucent is the infrastructure supplier. Huawei is supplying USB modems for the initial rollout.


Alcatel-Lucent confirmed that it is providing Telefónica with a complete, end-to-end 4G LTE solution – including LTE base stations (eNodeBs), all-IP wireless Evolved Packet Core (EPC), and subscriber data management capabilities based on our IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) portfolio. Alcatel-Lucent also will build, operate and maintain the network on Telefonica's behalf. http://www.telefonica.es

  • In July 2011, Telefónica Spain was the winning bidder on five blocks of frequencies (70 MHz total) in the spectrum auction conducted by Spain's Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade. This includes 2x10 MHz in the 800 MHz band, which the company plans to use for a nationwide LTE network. Additionally, Telefónica has secured 2x5 MHz in the 900 MHz band and 2x20 MHz in the 2.6 GHz band, enabling other broadband wireless services. Telefónica bid 668 million euros, payable in two installments, September 2011 (53%) and June 2012 (47%). The spectrum licenses extends to December 31, 2030.

Saudi Telecom Launches LTE Network

Saudi Telecom Company (STC) announced the launch of its LTE network. The network supports a top downlink rate of 100 Mbps. The company said it will cover 400 locations during the first phase of the launch. Further service details have not yet been posted.

Ericsson Develops Mobile Broadband Connection Protocol for Windows 8

Ericsson, in partnership with Microsoft and other companies within USB Implementers Forum, has developed a new protocol to make it easier for manufacturers to bring mobile broadband to people buying notebooks and tablets.


Support for the protocol, which will be included in Windows 8, means that device manufacturers will no longer need to install drivers for embedded mobile broadband connectivity or a connection manager.


The protocol will be demonstrated in reference devices at the Microsoft BUILD conference taking place in Anaheim, California September 13-16.


The new feature will be available on all Ericsson modules starting with the F5321gw, H5321gw and C5621gw and beyond after the final release of Windows 8.

Intel Optimizes Atom for Android, Looks for 22nm Ivy Bridge in early 2012

Intel is working with Google to optimize future releases of the Android platform for Intel's family of low power Atom processors. The joint effort is designed to speed time-to-market of Intel technology-based smartphones running the Android platform. The companies are also working on extending the Intel architecture with other Google products, including Chrome OS, Google TV, and the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) and Native Development Kit (NDK).


At the Intel Developers Forum in San Francisco, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said he is looking for next generation of Ultrabooks to arrive early next year based on "Ivy Bridge" 22nm technology and the company's 3-D Tri-gate transistors. Otellini also described the new class of platform power management in development for the 2013 "Haswell" products for Ultrabooks. Intel is looking to reduce idle platform power by more than 20 times over current designs, and along with innovations, this will lead to more than 10 days of connected standby battery life by 2013.


In addition, the company announced McAfee's new DeepSAFE technology, which works with hardware capabilities found in the Intel Core™ i3, i5 and i7 processors to provide new levels of security and a different vantage point by operating below the operating system. This technology will launch in a McAfee enterprise product later this year.

Metaswitch's New SBC Offers Independent Scaling of Signaling and Media

Metaswitch Networks introduced its Perimeta session border controller designed for independent scaling of signaling and media functions. The platform represents a new class of SBC because currently deployed systems are not optimized to handle the highly dynamic session environment brought on by massive number of mobile devices and services such as presence and IM. The challenge is expected to become more acute with the adoption of VoLTE and RCS-e applications.


Metaswitch, which has a long history of developing SBC software solutions for OEM partners, believes a more flexible architectures is required. Its new session border control features discrete software modules for signaling and media functions. These may be installed on separate hardware elements to provide a distributed solution to session border control, or combined together as an integrated appliance. By independently scaling signaling and media capacity, network operators can avoid stranding unused media capacity as signaling grows. Centralizing the signaling function, rather than having multiple SBCs, also makes it easier to manage the network and reduces CAPEX.


The Metaswitch Perimeta is an ATCA COTS platform supporting 3GPP IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) standards, including VoLTE: P-CSCF, IMS-ALG, and IMS-AG. It leverages the latest multi-core, multi-threaded CPUs to scale performance. Perimeta also provides post-analysis forensic capabilities with detailed protocol decode information on every SIP message it exchanges with the network and every internal routing and processing decision it makes.


The company noted that more than 30 operators have already validated this approach and purchased Perimeta for their networks.

Ikanos Debuts Dual-Core Processors for Next Gen Services Gateways

Ikanos Communications introduced two dual-core communications processors – the Fusiv Vx175 and Fusiv Vx173 -- designed for a wide range of devices including femtocell gateways, smart energy gateways, mobile broadband routers, optical networking terminals, network attached storage and other next generation services gateways. The new devices add to the company's Fusiv portfolio and extend the range of access types supported to PON, LTE and other broadband technologies.


Key features of the Vx175/173 processors include:




  • Advanced Dual-Core Processor Architecture – The Vx175/173 communications processors have two MIPS cores. In the Vx175, cores provide up to 600MHz processing power. The Vx173 cores run at 400MHz.

Linley Group: Embedded Processor Market Sees Strong Growth

The embedded processor market reached record revenue of $3.6 billion in 2010, up 31% over 2009, and will top $5.1 billion by 2015, according to The Linley Group's recently released “A Guide to High Speed Embedded Processors�? report. The strong rebound was driven by restocking, renewed demand and market expansion.


Notable findings include:




  • There will be a five-year compound annual growth rate of 7.7 percent from 2010 through 2015 as the market reverts to normal growth driven by expanding opportunities in storage systems and by demand for high-performance processors for LTE cellular infrastructure.


  • Over the next five years, storage will be the fastest-growing high-level segment in this market.


  • The high-speed embedded market is consolidating around a handful of technical approaches that each addresses a set of applications.


This sixth edition report analyzes more than 100 products, as well as capabilities and strategies of 15 vendors. It covers high-performance RISC and x86 processors for embedded systems, focusing on processors operating at 400MHz and above. Cisco Issues 3-Year Forecasts, Sales Growth Seen in 5-7% Range

Cisco has sharpened its business strategy and is now focused on growing its earnings faster than revenue, said executives at the company's Annual Financial Analyst Conference in San Jose. The company foresees a 5-7% revenue growth for the next three years, due to public sector weakness, uncertain macroeconomic conditions and competition. Meanwhile, Cisco is targeting a 7-9% CAGR in earnings per share over the next three years.


Over the past 120 days, Cisco has reorganized its entire sales, engineering, services and operations teams. This involved the elimination of 12,700 full-time positions through lay-offs (4,400), early retirement (2,100), a factory sale in Mexico (5,000) and cuts of contracted workers (1,200). Realignments affected a further 23,000 other employees. These changes are expected to yield $1 billion in cost efficiencies.


Among the companies top 5 foundational priorities, there is a renewed focus on the Core by building momentum in Routing with the ASR 1000, ASR 5000, ASR 9000 and CRS platforms. The routing CAGR is forecast at 5-7%. In Switching, Cisco has seen pressure on gross margins but see opportunities in campus, data center and high-end enterprise networking. The switching CAGR is forecast at 2-4%. In Services, Cisco expects a stronger growth rate of 13-15% by offering its customized networking expertise and pursuing a collaborative partner approach.


In Collaboration, Cisco also sees 13-15% CAGR thanks to video, which it sees as its most important differentiator.


In Data Centers / Virtualization / Cloud, Cisco sees opportunities for borderless networks spanning enterprises and service providers. Major transitions are underway as storage, processing, networks and software are converging. The forecast is for CAGR of 2-4%, and possibly accelerating to 18%.


Cisco's Video Strategy relies on its "Medianet" architecture to deliver content to any device. Here Cisco forecasts growth of CAGR of 7-9%.


Architectures for Business Transformation aim to change the game for industry verticals. In the global commercial segment, Cisco sees CAGR of 9-11% over the next three years, for the global public sector the expected CAGR is 2-6%, and for global service providers the CAGR is 5-7%.

McAfee's DeepSAFE Takes Aim at Rootkits

McAfee previewed its DeepSAFE hardware-assisted security technology for proactively detecting and preventing stealthy advanced persistent threats (APTs) and malware. The technology, which was co-developed with Intel, sits below the OS, providing the ability to fundamentally change the security game, according to the companies.


According to McAfee Labs, more than 1,200 new rootkits per day are detected - equating to 50 per hour every single day. The DeepSAFE technology, which was demonstrated at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, was able to detect and stop a zero-day Agony rootkit from infecting a system in real time. This technology is expected to launch in products later in 2011.

Blue Coat Builds a Big Content Cache for Service Providers

Blue Coat Systems introduced its next-generation CacheFlow 5000 appliance -- delivering more than three times greater throughput and cache storage compared to the previous version -- in the same compact, 4U footprint. The up-sizing is required by the strain of media-rich content traversing service provider networks, especially videos and large files.


The initial CacheFlow 5000 appliance, which was released in March 2010, leveraged caching intelligence to address the new wave of rich, dynamic Web 2.0 content, which previously had been difficult or impossible to cache. Blue Coat said it has seen success with this model as it now has nearly 50 service provider customers using the system. The appliance achieves on average 40-50% bandwidth savings on general Web traffic, according to the company.


Blue Coat also provides a "CachePulse" cloud service which delivers on-the-fly caching rule and instruction updates to deployed CacheFlow appliances to provide continued high bandwidth savings improvements.


The new release of the CacheFlow 5000 appliance adds a significant performance and capacity boost via new 64-bit software and hardware improvements. The new CacheFlow appliance also adds an option for 10GigE Fiber, in addition to existing copper, to support high-speed network interfaces.

Qualcomm Positions for More Powerful Enterprise Femto Networks

Qualcomm introduced three enterprise Femtocell Station Modem (FSM) chipsets supporting up to 32 active users. These chipsets complement the currently available FSM 3G femtocell chipsets that feature eight user versions targeting the residential market with hardware and software compatibility. The company also announced a Femto-Wi-Fi hardware reference design that integrates these FSM enterprise solutions with Qualcomm Atheros 802.11n Wi-Fi AR9350 and AR9344 access point solutions.


Qualcomm's FSM chipsets support both CDMA2000 and UMTS/HSPA+ network technologies and include a baseband modem, RF, network listen, GPS and an application processor.


Qualcomm is first releasing enterprise FSM chipsets for UMTS and CDMA supporting 16 users. Both the Femto-Wi-Fi integration hardware platform and the CDMA version of the FSM chipset with the expanded 32-user support are scheduled for availability in the second half of 2011.


Qualcomm is featuring "UltraSON" interference and mobility management algorithms, which provide robust wireless coverage while ensuring that the femtocells do not interfere with macrocells while providing hand-off capabilities between macrocells and other femtocells.


The company said that providing increased support for up to 32 active users, its FSM chipset will provide the capability to address larger cell sites, such as metro-femtocells and picocells, allowing more simultaneous users to connect to the femtocell and access cellular networks in challenging environments where reception is poor. The integrated Femto-Wi-Fi reference designs allow operators to create access points that let their enterprise customers connect to both Wi-Fi and cellular networks through a single gateway and coordinate the services delivery via either access technology.


The Qualcomm Atheros AR9350 and AR9344 Wi-Fi SoCs support all modes of 802.11n in both bands and include Ethernet, routing and management functions.

American Jobs Act Includes Spectrum Provision

The American Jobs Act presented by President Obama highlights urges support for the bipartisan legislation from Senators Rockefeller and Hutchison, including an investment to develop and deploy a nationwide, interoperable wireless network for public safety. The plan includes reallocating the D Block for public safety (costing $3 billion) and $7 billion to support the deployment of this network and technological development to tailor the network to meet public safety requirements.

Broadcom to acquire NetLogic for $3.7 Billion

Broadcom will acquire NetLogic Microsystems in a deal valued at $3.7 billion ($50 per share) net of cash assumed.


NetLogic Microsystems, which is based in Santa Clara, California, adds a number of critical new product lines and technologies to Broadcom's portfolio, including knowledge-based processors, multi-core embedded processors, and digital front-end processors.


"This transaction delivers on all fronts for Broadcom's shareholders -- strategic fit, leading-edge technology and significant financial upside," said Scott McGregor, Broadcom's President and CEO. "With NetLogic Microsystems, Broadcom is acquiring a leading multi-core embedded processor solution, market leading knowledge-based processors, and unique digital front-end technology for wireless base stations that are key enablers for the next generation infrastructure build-out. Broadcom is now better positioned to meet growing customer demand for integrated, end-to-end communications and processing platforms for network infrastructure."


The companies expect the deal to close in the first half of 2012. Broadcom currently expects the acquisition to be accretive to earnings per share by approximately $0.10 on a non-GAAP basis in 2012.


Broadcom today also reiterated its business outlook for the third quarter of 2011. Broadcom expects revenue around the middle of the previously-guided range of $1.9 billion and $2.0 billion, GAAP product gross margins of flat to up slightly and GAAP research & development and selling, general and administrative expenses of flat to down $10 million in the third quarter of 2011. By the end of the third quarter, Broadcom also expects to have approximately $4.2 billion in cash and cash equivalents on hand, up from approximately $3.8 billion at the end of the second quarter.

  • Last week, NetLogic Microsystems unveiled its next generation of XLP II family of processors based on 28nm process technology, packing up to 80 high-performance NXCPUs per chip, and promising 5-7x performance enhancement over the existing XLP processors. Target applications for the new multi-core devices include next-generation LTE mobile infrastructure, data center, enterprise networking, storage and security platforms. NetLogic said its XLP II processor family is designed to deliver over 100 Gbps of network processing performance per device and over 800 Gbps in a clustered, fully-coherent system. The devices integrate up to 80 high-performance NXCPUs per chip, featuring an enhanced quad-issue, quad-threaded, superscalar out-of-order processor architecture capable of operating at up to 2.5 GHz to provide unmatched control and data plane processing and low-power profile.



  • In July, NetLogic Microsystems reported Q2 2011 revenue of $103.7 million, a 5.1% sequential increase from $98.7 million for the first quarter of 2011 and a 9.1% increase from $95.0 million for the second quarter of 2010. Net loss (GAAP) was $35.2 million or $0.51 per diluted share. By comparison, GAAP net loss was $4.8 million or $0.08 per diluted share for the second quarter of 2010.



  • In March 2011, NetLogic agreed to acquire Optichron, a privately-held, fabless semiconductor provider of 3G/4G LTE base station digital front-end (DFE) processors, for approximately $77 million in cash, $22 million for restricted stock units for employees of Optichron, and a possible maximum earn-out or approximately $108.5 million payable in 2013 if certain milestones are met. Optichron, which is based in Fremont, California, offers DFE technology for next-generation LTE systems requiring the highest data rates and lowest power consumption.
