AT&T and T-Mobile USA Defend Merger Efficiencies

AT&T and T-Mobile USA filed a response in U.S. District Court to the Department of Justice's lawsuit that seeks to block their proposed merger.


In a 27-page filing, the carriers argue that the DOJ failed to appreciate how the efficiencies of the acquisition would lead to a healthier market for advanced wireless services, that the DOJ failed to understand the competitive dynamics currently at play in this industry, and that the DOJ failed to appreciate how the spectrum shortage they now face will lead to higher prices should their merger not go forward.


AT&T notes that T-Mobile USA has been losing customers, lacks the spectrum to deploy a true 4G network, and its parent company is unwilling to invest the funding needed to make it a viable competitor in the long term.

  • The Department of Justice lawsuit, which was filed August 31, seeks to block AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile on the grounds that the deal would result in "tens of millions of consumers all across the United States facing higher prices, fewer choices and lower quality products for their mobile wireless services." In its conclusion, the DOJ said it was not convinced by AT&T's arguments that the proposed transaction would yield efficiencies benefiting consumers and outweighing adverse impacts on competition. The key finding was that AT&T could achieve the same network power and reach by deploying its own infrastructure rather than by eliminating a competitor.

KT to Integrate Cisco's Videoscape Media Suite

KT has agreed to integrate Cisco's Videoscape Media Suite, a cornerstone component of the Cisco Videoscape portfolio, into its unified content management system. Videoscape is a TV platform for service providers that utilize the network, cloud and client devices together to deliver new, high-quality video experiences over the Internet. It supports PC/Mac/iOS/Android clients to efficiently manage and publish content across multiple screens.


KT serves over 16 million mobile subscribers and over 7.6 million fixed broadband Internet subscribers with nearly 2.5 million customers now subscribed to its ‘olleh tv' IPTV service.


KT is also now making various multimedia services available to its customers via PCs and third-party devices, and is creating a new culture for ‘N Screen' media services by offering connections to a wide range of content including video, audio, e-books and online games.

  • In January 2011, Cisco's John Chambers outlined a new "Videoscape" portfolio of five major product families aimed at "transforming the TV experience." The goal is to work with Service Providers to allow any device over any network to access any content to which they are entitled. Cisco Videoscape would enable service providers to monetize activities outside their own network or traditional device footprints.


    A key facet of Videoscape is about delivering a consistent interface across multiple devices, while providing a universal guide and search capabilities across all content sources. This requires building capabilities into the service provider's video back-office using APIs extending across content management systems and virtualized storage. The capabilities would be social network-aware and open to advertising opportunities.

Cisco Supplies 3G60 Broadband Processing Engine for Virgin Media

Cisco has supplied its DOCSIS 3.0 solution to Virgin Media for use in its trial of the world's fastest cable connection -- a service boasting up to 1.5 Gbps downstream and 150 Mbps upstream. The connection is delivered over the same HFC infrastructure and technology as Virgin Media uses to provide residential customers with speeds of up to 100 Mbps, which is currently being rolled out to over half of all UK homes.


The trial includes Cisco's (3G60) Broadband Processing Engine, a high-density, cost-effective line card for Cisco's flagship uBR10K Universal Broadband Router and Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS).

Vodafone Opens "Xone" Silicon Valley Center

Vodafone opened a Silicon Valley research and development center to provide technical expertise, potential financial assistance, logistical support and facilities to help promising US technology companies gain a fast track into proof-of-concept trials across Vodafone's global network.


Specifically, Vodafone said its "Xone" facility is intended to:

  • identify and qualify innovative technologies from startups, R&D labs, universities and venture capital portfolios with the potential to deliver new and innovative products and services to Vodafone's global customer base;


  • provide selected companies with commercial feedback. Companies will be offered support from the Vodafone Xone team of professionals whose expertise spans business development, network and device architecture, consumer electronics, payment and billing mechanisms, data analytics and content delivery. Up to 24 companies are able to use on-site office and test space within Vodafone Xone;


  • test products and services in the Vodafone Xone™ test and development lab, a fully functional replica of Vodafone's global networks including a protected environment for developers to test solutions. Capabilities include 2G/3G/LTE radio and an Internet Protocol (IP) network together with access to the IP service framework IP Multimedia Subsystem. The lab is interconnected via a dedicated backbone to Vodafone's European networks. Vodafone Xone™ is also closely aligned with Verizon's Innovation Centres in San Francisco and Waltham, Mass., giving select companies access to Verizon Wireless's development 4G LTE network, the high-speed, next-generation platform common to both Vodafone and Verizon Wireless, as well as additional collaboration resources;

TIM Selects Cisco's CRS-3 for Core Upgrade

TIM, which serves over 55 million mobile users across Brazil, will invest 20 million BRL to upgrade its core network using the Cisco CRS-3 Carrier Routing System. The project includes the deployment of 12 routers by the end of November. Eight of the routers will be installed in the core network and four will be used for peering (providing Internet access).


The deployment is being carried out in partnership with Italtel.


"TIM is the first operator in Brazil and the second in Latin America to invest in the most advanced technology in IP networking equipment. Chunghwa Telecom Switches to Ericsson for IPTV

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom has selected Ericsson to deploy a new IPTV system for its 900,000 subscribers. The new platform will replace Chunghwa's existing IPTV system and respond to a growing demand from consumers for content anywhere, any time on a wide range of devices including TVs, computers, smartphones and tablets. The deal also includes Ericsson Multiscreen TV and the Ericsson Media Connect (IPTV Remote) service. The new services are due to be available to subscribers in December of this year. Financial terms were not disclosed.

TI Trims Q3 Outlook

Texas Instruments narrowed and lowered its expected ranges for revenue and earnings per share (EPS) for Q3, saying it now expects revenue in the range of $3.23 – 3.37 billion, compared with the prior range of $3.40 – 3.70 billion. The company cited lower demand across a wide range of products, markets and customers.

ZTE Develops 4-Path TD-LTE with 40MHz Channels

ZTE introduced the first 4-path TD-LTE Remote Radio Unit (RRU) that operates at a bandwidth of 40MHz and transmits with a power of 80W. The new high-power, large-capacity RRU supports 2x20MHz TD-LTE carriers and 80W (20W x 4 paths) of transmission power.


ZTE said these capabilities will increase edge frequency efficiency by more than 30 percent. It also increases network coverage and reduces Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by supporting two carriers and reducing the number of base station devices needed by operators. The RRU can also be upgraded to support LTE-A in the future.

NTT Docomo Offers New LTE Billing Plans, GALAXY Tablets

NTT DOCOMO is introducing new billing plans for its Xi (read 'Crossy') LTE service beginning next month. The carrier will offer a flat-rate plan suited to heavy data users and a new two-tiered plan that allows moderate data users to pay as they go up to a set limit. Both plans will be available either with or without two-year contracts.


Specially discounted introductory rates will be offered for all plans. For example, the flat-rate data plan with a two-year contract, called the “Xi Two-Year Data Plan FLAT,�? will be available for 4,410 yen (including tax) per month through April 2012, compared to the regular rate of 5,985 yen thereafter.


Through September of next year, all downlinks will be offered at a max. 75 Mbps. From October 2012, downlink rates for users who exceed 7GB of data will be reduced to a max. 128 Kbps for the remainder of that month. Continued service at a max. 75 Mbps will be available, however, for an additional charge of 2,625 yen (including tax) per each additional 2GB of data.


In addition, NTT Docomo will begin selling its first two LTE tablets next month: the "docomo Tablet GALAXY Tab 10.1 LTE SC-01D" and the "docomo Tablet ARROWS Tab LTE F-01D". Vendors Test Shortest Path Bridging (802.1aq) Interoperability

The industry's first large-scale, multi-vendor interoperability test leveraging IEEE 802.1aq Shortest Path Bridging (SPB) technology was recently completed by leading vendors, including Alcatel-Lucent, Avaya, Huawei, Solana Networks and Spirent Communications.


SPB allows customers to greatly simplify how they create and configure networks -- across the enterprise and for the cloud -- by requiring service provisioning only at the edge of the network. It uses Intermediate System To Intermediate System (IS-IS), a proven carrier-grade link state protocol, to dynamically build the topology between network nodes, saving network administrators time and effort, and virtually eliminating human error.


The interoperability test simulated a large network environment of almost 200 nodes and more than 400 links. Qosmos Raises EUR 19.8 Million for DPI Network Intelligence Tools

Qosmos, a start-up based in Paris, raised EUR 19.8 million (US$28.5 million) for its Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)- based Network Intelligence (NI) technology.


Qosmos' ixEngine provides visibility into data crossing wireless networks by identifying, extracting and querying specific information. The ixEngine offers recognition for hundreds of protocols, and captures thousands of metadata and protocol attributes. The data can then be applied to lawful interception, cyber security, traffic optimization, policy management, service assurance, market research and network and data security. Qosmos' customers are Network Equipment Providers, Software Vendors and Systems Integrators in the telecom, networking and cybersecurity markets.


The round was co-led by leading European venture firm DFJ Esprit, Fonds Stratégique d'Investissements (FSI) and Alven Capital. BATS and DragonWave Develop Massive-Capacity, Auto Aiming & Tracking Wireless Systems

Broadband Antenna Tracking Systems (BATS) and DragonWave announced an auto-aiming and tracking wireless system that enables high-capacity backhaul for fixed-to-mobile and mobile-to-mobile applications. The joint solution integrates BATS' automatic antenna aiming and tracking technology with DragonWave's Horizon packet microwave solutions.

Pulse Electronics Offers Vehicle Navigation Antenna with LTE

Pulse Electronics introduced a vehicular mount antenna supporting LTE, 3G, WLAN, and GPS applications. The antenna offers optimized gain over multiple frequency bands. Wider frequency bands (698-960/1710-2170/2300-2700/1575 MHz) are covered in one small, compact 3.5�? (88.3mm) tall, 4.16�? (105.7mm) diameter at base antenna. Pulse said this antenna is ideal for voice, mobile data, fixed broadband, navigation, asset tracking, fleet management, LTE, and 700 MHz public safety applications.
