ZigBee and Wi-Fi Alliances Team on Smart Grid Wireless

The ZigBee Alliance and the Wi-Fi Alliance will collaborate on wireless home area networks (HAN) for Smart Grid applications. The initial focus of the collaboration will be ZigBee Smart Energy 2.0, which is the next-generation energy management protocol for Smart Grid-enabled homes based on today's ZigBee Smart Energy Profile. The ZigBee Smart Energy 2.0 is expected to operate over Wi-Fi technology as a result of the collaboration. The technology could be integrated into devices ranging from utility meters, thermostats, and appliances to home entertainment, computing systems, and automobiles.

EXFO Extends OTN Test Capabilities to 100G Ethernet Testing

EXFO has added optical transport network (OTN) testing capabilities to its FTB/IQS-85100G Packet Blazer 100G/40G Ethernet Test Modules. These include OTU4 (111.81 Gbps) and OTU3 (43.018 Gbps) full-line-rate testing, as well as framing and forward error correction (FEC) testing as per ITU-T G.709, enabling breakthrough-level qualification of 100G Ethernet transmission over OTN. These added capabilities are available through a software option for existing 85100G Packet Blazer modules, requiring no additional hardware and maximizing customers' return on investment. EXFO will demonstrate these capabilities at the upcoming OFC event (booth 1134, March 23-25).

Lockheed Martin Opens Second Security Intelligence Center In Denver

Lockheed Martin officially opened its second Security Intelligence Center (SIC) in Denver. The first center was opened in Gaithersburg, Md. in May 2008.The facilities serve as Lockheed Martin's focal points for computer network defense including detection, identification and response to all information security incidents. Both facilities were built to secure government and Department of Defense (DoD) specifications, and feature classified systems that are connected to information sharing networks such as the DoD Cyber Crime Center's DIBNet. The centers include an operations floor, digital forensics area, secure evidence storage room, classified workspace, executive conference room and server room.

Acme Packet Confirms 134 Service Providers Customers for Enterprise SIP Trunking

SIP trunking is poised for substantial growth in 2010, according to Acme Packet, as service providers look to meet enterprise demand for more cost-efficient means of delivering IP connections.

A total of 134 service providers in 43 countries are currently delivering SIP trunking services using Acme Packet's Net-Net session border controllers (SBCs). The company said these service providers are currently in the early stages of their SIP trunking service delivery and they expect more significant enterprise adoption in 2010.

Opnext and Ixia Demo 100 Gigabit Ethernet

Opnext and Ixia have successfully demonstrated 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) interoperability of both the CFP MSA standard and the IEEE 802.3ba draft standard across multiple products and platforms. Ixia and Opnext previously verified their 100 GbE CFP MSA products, successfully transmitting and receiving 100 GbE packets at a demonstration hosted by Juniper Networks.

The traffic was created and measured using the Ixia K2 traffic generator and analyzer and Opnext's 100GBASE-LR4 CFP Multi-Source Agreement (CFP MSA)-compliant optical module.

"In alignment with our vision for The New Network, Juniper is leading the development and testing of 100 GbE hardware for high performance networks, supported by an open, flexible and secure infrastructure," said Unmesh Agarwala, vice president of engineering, Core Business Unit, Juniper Networks.

Google Apps Reaches 25 Million Users

Google reported that more than 25 million people have "gone Google", or adopted Google Apps for business usage. The company also released a Google Apps Migration tool for Microsoft® Exchange. This new server-side tool migrates a company's email, calendar and contact data from Microsoft Exchange to Google Apps.

Proximion Offers FBG-based Tunable Dispersion Compensation for 10/40 Gbps

Proximion Fiber Systems AB introduced two new versions of its Tunable Dispersion Compensation Module (TDCM) based on its proprietary Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) technology.

The new TDCM module offers a tunable range of +/-1400 ps/nm at a bandwidth operation of 45 GHz. Operating at the same 45 GHz bandwidth, Proximion's second new module version enables customers to achieve full flexibility while reaching truly colorless tuning over +/- 1200 ps/nm. With a low power consumption of 1.5 watts, low loss and wide bandwidth, Proximion's newest TDCM modules easily support the growing need for high performance dispersion compensation for 10G and 40G applications.

Netronome Samples 40-Core Network Flow Processors for 40 and 100 Gbps Designs

Netronome has begun sampling its NFP-3240 processor to major network equipment suppliers. Netronome's Network Flow Processor packs an array of 40 1.4GHz microengine RISC cores and is designed for tight coupling with multicore Intel processors. Target applications include network, security and content processing platforms operating at 40 and 100 Gbps rates. Customer designs include shared service blades in switches and routers, 3G and LTE wireless infrastructure, security appliances and virtualized servers. The first commercial network boxes based on the processor are expected to reach production in the second half of 2010.

Highlights of the new NFP-32xx network flow processors include:

High-Performance: Up to 40 multi-threaded programmable networking cores running at 1.4GHz enable the NFP to deliver over 56 billion instructions per second with 320 hardware threads that optimize memory utilization. This yields 1800 instructions per packet at 30 million packets per second, enabling 20Gbps of L2-L7 deep packet processing with line-rate security and I/O virtualization for millions of simultaneous flows.

Power Efficiency: Operating at only 15 to 35 watts, the NFP-32xx delivers more than four times the power efficiency of its closest competitor.

Software-Defined I/O: Unlike fixed-function ASICs and configurable NPUs, Netronome's NFPs are fully programmable processors. Software-defined I/O supports both L2-L3 packet processing and L4-L7 application- and content-aware deep packet inspection. This programmability, coupled with line rate packet processing, provides the highest level of inspection and throughput available in the industry for traditional NPU applications such as high-performance line cards.

Network Virtualization in Silicon: Virtualized multicore CPUs are increasingly used in switches, routers, and network appliances for control, data plane, security and other networking applications. To scale network performance to 10Gbps and beyond the NFP-32xx offers a PCIe v2.0 implementation including extended SR-IOV with 256 queues to provide guaranteed bandwidth and low latency access to shared I/O devices. Netronome's SR-IOV drivers include configurable algorithms for load balancing to virtualized multicore CPUs and efficient zero-copy mechanisms that significantly improve CPU, memory and system bandwidth utilization. In addition to eight PCIe lanes, the NFP supports a wide range of popular high-speed network interfaces including dual 25Gbps Interlaken, SPI-4.2 and dual 10Gbps XAUI.

Integrated Hardware Acceleration for Security, Content and Parallel Processing: Unified computing architectures place extensive security requirements on the network. Ranging from coarse policy enforcement using IEEE 802.1AE LinkSec to granular and stateful flow-based applications such as IPsec and SSL, security processing is now required for the majority of network traffic. The NFP provides 20Gbps of line rate security processing by embedding hardware acceleration in a programmable dataplane, including cryptography engines, PKI engines, dedicated hardware for true random number generation, and support for in-line and look-aside security processing designs.

Deutsche Telekom Sets 2015 Growth Targets

Deutsche Telekom believes that mobile data traffic will provide the richest opportunities for revenue growth. Another ambition is to expand its footprint in the TV business in Europe and become the pay-TV market leader in Germany.

In a press conference in Bonn, the carrier confirmed its financial guidance for 2010 and laid out a longer term strategy to restructure its business and drive up revenue from growth areas through investments in intelligent networks and its portfolio of IT, Internet and network services.

Deutsche Telekom expects the revenue mix to have shifted markedly by 2015, with higher revenues being generated in the new growth areas. To pursue these opportunities, Deutsche Telekom plans to invest around EUR 10 billion between 2010 and 2012 in fiber optics, new mobile communications technologies, and IT processes. Investments are also considered for other European countries.

While continuing to defend its traditional access business in fixed and mobile in Germany, Deutsche Telekom will focus on the following five strategic growth areas:

  • Mobile Internet: mobile data traffic is expected to increase revenue from just under EUR 4 billion in 2009 to around EUR 6 billion in 2012 and approximately EUR 10 billion in 2015.

  • Deutsche Telekom plans to expand its own Internet offerings -- such as the Scout24 family, Musicload, Videoload, Softwareload and Gamesload -- and increase revenues from EUR 0.8 billion to between EUR 2 and 3 billion by 2015.

  • Connected home: consumers should enjoy universal, secure access to content and services across all screens. Revenues in this area -- including broadband access -- are expected to increase from EUR 5 billion to around EUR 7 billion in 2015.

  • T-Systems is planning to lift its external revenue by EUR 2 billion to around EUR 8 billion and believes that this will be achieved in particular with dynamic services and cloud computing.

  • Deutsche Telekom anticipates long-term revenue opportunities in intelligent network services for industries such as energy, healthcare, media and automotive.

  • Such services include third-party applications that will be facilitated by Deutsche Telekom's networks and services, such as medical care over smartphones or vehicle telemetry. Other applications are intelligent electricity meters for consumers that display up-to-the-minute consumption data at all times and allow prompt consumption management and energy feed-in. According to forecasts (Smart 2020), state-of-the-art ICT solutions will enable substantial reductions in CO emissions. Deutsche Telekom aims to generate total revenue of around EUR 1 billion in this area by 2015.

Qualcomm to Bid In India's 2.3 GHz Spectrum Auction

Qualcomm filed an application with the Indian Government to bid in India's upcoming auction for BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band to facilitate the deployment of TD-http://www.convergedigest.com/qa655.aspLTE. If successful in winning spectrum in the auction, Qualcomm intends to secure Indian partners after completion of the auction and in compliance with the applicable Indian Foreign Direct Investment regulations.

Qualcomm said it hopes its bid can foster the accelerated deployment of TD-LTE. TD-LTE is compatible with 3G WCDMA/HSPA and EV-DO, and will enable a seamless broadband experience for consumers within India and while roaming globally.

Qualcomm intends to supply integrated multimode devices that support TD-LTE as well as 3G and 2G technologies. The company believes it can leverage the 3G and 2G ecosystems to achieve the economies of scale needed to enable wireless broadband devices at affordable price points for Indian consumers.

Samsung Handset Embeds Telegent Analog Mobile TV

Samsung has begun shipping a new Star TV S5233T handset for Southeast Asia that incorporates Telegent Systems' analog mobile TV receiver.

The Samsung Star TV provides rich graphical touchscreen controls for the analog mobile TV. Innovations introduced by Samsung in this model include the ability to flick the screen to change channels, one-click screen capture and record, on-screen keypad channel entry and reception of incoming SMS messages with continuous TV viewing.

Alcatel-Lucent to Leverage Intel Xeon Processors in ATCA Platforms

Alcatel-Lucent will use the new, six-core Intel Xeon processor 5600 series in a wide variety of future products. Alcatel-Lucent reported that the new processor boosts performance by a factor of 15 over single-core servers and a 40 percent performance improvement over the previous generation four-core Intel Xeon processer 5500 series. This new processor series also will provide a significantly improved performance/power dissipation, and by doing so can substantially reduce the carbon footprint of some of Alcatel-Lucent's products.

Alcatel-Lucent also reinforced its commitment to Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) technology as the foundation for its next-generation telecommunication and application platforms. v

Broadband Forum Elects Tom Starr as President

The Broadband Forum announced its new board as well as it new President and Chairman.

The officers include President and Chairman Tom Starr (AT&T), Marcin Drzymala (Telekomunikacja Polska) and Andrew G. Malis (Verizon) holding the positions of Vice Presidents and David Sinicrope (Ericsson) elected as Secretary. Frank Van der Putten (Alcatel-Lucent) remains Treasurer.

Elected to the board were: Peter Adams (ADTRAN), Christophe Alter (France Telecom), Sultan Dawood (Cisco Systems), George Dobrowski (Huawei Technologies), Marcin Drzymala (Telekomunikacja Polska), Kevin Foster (BT), Andrew G. Malis (Verizon Communications), David Sinicrope (Ericsson), Mauro Tilocca (Telecom Italia) and Frank Van der Putten (Alcatel-Lucent). Netflix Picks Akamai for CDN -- Triple Digit Traffic Growth as Videos Move to HD

Netflix has selected Akamai as the primary content delivery network for movies and TV episodes streamed instantly over the Internet. The companies noted that already almost half of the 12.3 million Netflix members had instantly watched a movie or TV episode on either a computer or TV via a Netflix ready device as of the end of 2009..
Separately, Akamai reported that traffic across its global network associated with the delivery of full-length feature films has seen triple digit growth since November 2009. In addition to Netflix, EPIX and Roxio CinemaNow are also delivering HD quality movies on Akamai's distributed edge delivery network.

Akamai's global content delivery network currently exceeds 61,000 servers. A key feature of the Akamai HD Network is adaptive bit rate technology that automatically adapts to a user's fluctuating Internet conditions to enable smooth playback and improved viewing experiences.

McAfee Debuts Cloud Secure Program for SaaS Providers

McAfee announced a new Cloud Secure program for helping Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) providers add security to their cloud deployments. The program combines cloud security certification services with automated auditing, remediation and reporting capabilities provided by McAfee. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SuccessFactors, a leading SaaS provider are expected be amongst the first providers to leverage the new program.

The McAfee Cloud Secure program includes:

  • Cloud Security Certification Services: McAfee will partner with leading Certification delivery vendors to provide Certification services tailored for SaaS and Cloud vendors. The certification services, which are provided on an annual basis, will include existing security controls, processes and certifications, as well 0as future Cloud security standards.

  • Automated Auditing, Remediation & Reporting: Coupled with Certification, McAfee performs automatic and daily security audits, remediation of vulnerabilities and reporting of the security status of their service and network using the McAfee Cloud Secure service. Cloud vendors who pass the daily scan and other checks receive a "McAfee SECURE" trustmark, providing credible, third party validation to be used on their solutions and in customer-facing marketing collateral.

  • Security Credibility: The McAfee Cloud Secure program will leverage the trusted McAfee SECURE technology and trustmark. Sequans Readies its First LTE Chip

Sequans will soon begin sampling its first LTE chip. The SQN3010 is a baseband SOC, designed to comply with the 3GPP R8 standard, supporting UE category 3 throughput of 100 Mbps in a 20 MHz channel, and LTE band classes 38 and 40. The SQN3010 is integrated with RF provided by Sequans' partners. The device, which has been in development for many months, will be delivered first to China Mobile, the leading proponent of TD-LTE technology.

China Mobile selected Sequans to provide TD-LTE chips and USB dongles for the world's first TD-LTE demonstration network that China Mobile will deploy at World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, which begins in May.

Sequans confirmed that it is working with Motorola and Alcatel-Lucent to deliver TD-LTE USB dongles to China Mobile for LTE band class 40 (2.3-2.4 GHz) supporting 20 MHz channels.

In addition to enabling China Mobile, Sequans is collaborating with Alcatel-Lucent to bring TD-LTE solutions to TD-LTE operators in Asia and Europe who are planning to offer services at 2.6 GHz. Sequans is therefore delivering a second version of its TD-LTE USB dongle for LTE band class 38 (2.5-2.6 GHz), as announced by the two companies last month.

Level 3 to Expand its Switched Ethernet Footprint by 400%

Level 3 Communications announced plans to expand the number of Ethernet switches on its U.S. network by almost 400 percent. By expanding the switching footprint, Level 3 is eliminating the need for backhaul of switched metro Ethernet applications and also providing a more efficient backhaul mechanism for higher layer services, such as Internet or voice. The carrier said this will drive network efficiency, scalability and flexibility.

"This expanded architecture enables Level 3 to address a significantly broader set of enterprise and wholesale customer requirements for Ethernet services," said Sureel Choksi, chief marketing officer for Level 3. Tinet Adds More TransAtlantic 10G Wavelengths with Hibernia

Tinet, formerly the carrier arm of Tiscali Group, has turned to Hibernia Atlantic to deliver multiple 10 Gbps wavelengths of capacity to and from Toronto, New York, Dublin, London, Frankfurt and other major metro areas on Hibernia's private network. Tinet cited rising customer demand for wholesale services, such as Ethernet Private Lines, VPLS and IP Transit. This increase is also in line with Tinet's previously announced expansion plans, whereas the company is further investing its network, including deploying a third Network Operations Center (NOC) in the U.S.

Continuous Computing Shows Internet Offload Box using Intel Xeon 5600

Continuous Computing has developed an Internet Offload reference platform that leverages its recently upgraded FlexTCA 40G platforms. The Continuous Computing AdvancedTCA platform includes a new high-performance Intel Xeon processor 5600 series-based single board computer (SBC), Trillium protocol software and core reference application functions to create radio access network (RAN) and core-based Internet Offload equipment.

The target application is mobile data traffic offload. This can be accomplished by offloading high-bandwidth, non-revenue-generating traffic at the edge of the 3G or Evolved High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+) mobile core prior to reaching the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) network element. Continuous Computing said its solution is especially effective when used in combination with Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) on the Iu interface to help identify traffic for offload and prioritization -- and Continuous Computing also provides FlexTCA platform solutions for that function as well.

NETGEAR OEMs Firetide WLAN Controller Software

NETGEAR is licensing Firetide's WLAN controller software for the company's recently announced Pro-Safe 16-AP Wireless Management System (WMS5316).

Firetide said its expertise in wireless mesh infrastructure has enabled it to build controllers with better channel allocation and radio power control mechanisms to combat interferences and optimize network performance, eliminating deployment restrictions and allowing users to have greater flexibility in the management, control and expansion of their networks.
