Verizon Taps McAfee for Security-as-a-Service to Businesses

Verizon Business is launching a new Security-as-a-Service offering to help medium-sized businesses deal with growing cybersecurity threats. The offering, an integrated security suite from McAfee, provides five-way protection against cyberthreats for a monthly per-user fee. The five-way protection guards against network, endpoint, Web, data and e-mail security threats.


Verizon Business' new security suite consists of two solutions for mid-market customers - McAfee Total Protection Service -Advanced and McAfee Total Protection for Secure Business software.



McAfee Total Protection Service is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution for companies that do not want to purchase premises-based equipment or incur software installation and maintenance costs. McAfee manages the security infrastructure, offering:

  • Web-based console - a self-service security management tool for quickly updating security policies and configurations via easy drag-and-drop icons. It is accessible 24 x 7.


  • Rapid deployment - Because it is a cloud offering, customers can quickly deploy the solution to all users, in all locations.


  • Robust protection - It offers virus, spyware, spam, firewall, safe searching and Web-filtering protections, as well as vulnerability assessments - at both the desktop- and server-level. The service is constantly updated and is engineered to combat the most aggressive existing and emerging security threats.


The second offering, McAfee Total Protection for Secure Business software, is well-suited for a security specialist or IT manager looking for a highly customizable and flexible solution. TI's Quad-Radio Packs Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and FM

Texas Instruments (TI) demonstrated a single-chip solution that integrates WLAN 802.11n, GPS, FM transmit/receive and Bluetooth technologies. The single chip, the 65-nanometer WiLink 7.0 solution reduces costs by 30 percent, reduces size by 50 percent and delivers superior coexistence performance as compared to existing solutions. SAIC Completes Acquisition of CloudShield

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) completed its previously announced acquisition of CloudShield Technologies. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 2000, CloudShield's deep packet inspection (DPI) platform and applications enable customers to inspect, analyze and control all network traffic. CloudShield's IBM BladeCenter PN41 Blade scales from 20 Gbps for a single blade to 280 Gbps for a 14-blade chassis to greater than 1 Tbps per rack. CloudShield's CS-2000 System supports a range of connectivity options at full line rates, including multiple 1-Gbps links, SONET OC-12 & OC 48 links and 10-Gbps links. The systems provides total packet visibility and real-time analysis of traffic. Customers include large network operators as well as U.S. federal government agencies. Verizon Wireless Targets Location-Enabled Enterprise Services

Verizon Wireless has begun supporting a variety of third-party Location Based Services (LBS) applications for navigation, in-vehicle tracking and geo-fencing aimed at business users. The new service is especially relevant to organizations that rely on vehicles with mounted laptops such as public safety, delivery and maintenance workforces and others. The services are supported using select Mobile Broadband PC cards and USB modems with built-in Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers.


"Enabling LBS on our Mobile Broadband devices broadens the scope of applications our business customers can implement for their field workforces," said Mike Lanman, president of enterprise and government markets for Verizon Wireless. Ozmo Devices Hires New CEO -- Bill McLean

Ozmo Devices, a start-up developing low-power Wi-Fi Personal Area Network (Wi-Fi PAN) silicon and software, appointed Bill McLean as its new CEO. McLean was co-founder and CEO of GloNav, a fabless semiconductor company that manufactured GPS receivers for the cellular market. He successfully sold the company to NXP (part of ST Ericsson) for $110 million in 2008. Previously, Bill was President and CEO of Anadigm, a fabless semiconductor company producing field programmable analog arrays (FPAAs).

NETGEAR's Revenues Rise 36% YoY

NETGEAR reported Q4 2009 revenue of $218.8 million, as compared to $161.4 million for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2008, and as compared to $171.1 million in the third quarter ended September 27, 2009. Net income, computed in accordance with GAAP, for the fourth quarter of 2009 was $7.9 million, or $0.22 per diluted share. This compared to GAAP net loss of $7.3 million, or $0.21 per diluted share, for the fourth quarter of 2008, and to GAAP net income of $8.5 million, or $0.24 per diluted share, in the third quarter of 2009.


Patrick Lo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NETGEAR, commented, "We exceeded expectations and recorded net revenue of $218.8 million in the fourth quarter 2009, a new record for net revenue during any quarter since NETGEAR's inception. France Télécom and Alcatel-Lucent Share R&D Resources

France Télécom--Orange and Alcatel-Lucent announced an R&D partnership aimed at spurring open innovation in the Brittany and Loire regions. The Arc Bretagne Atlantique (ABA) program complements the Images et Réseaux (Images and Networks) cluster. The goal is to develop the competitiveness of local small and medium enterprises (SMEs).


Alcatel-Lucent will make available the expertise of its sites in Lannion, Rennes and Orvault, near Nantes, and eventually in Brest. France Télécom-Orange will make available the expertise of its sites in Lannion and Rennes.

Cisco and TANDBERG Outline Roadmap Prior to Merger

Despite their planned merger not yet being completed, Cisco and TANDBERG outlined their strategy to integrate their respective product portfolios once the deal is done. The companies anticipate regulatory approval in the first half of calendar year 2010.


The common, open architecture will extend features such as One Button to Push and Continuous Presence, and unified communications integration. The companies will form a new Cisco TelePresence Technology Group that will retain and build on product lines from both companies in the following product groups:

  • Immersive TelePresence: The flagship Cisco TelePresence System 3000 series, including the Cisco TelePresence System 3000/3010 and Cisco TelePresence System 3200/3210, will continue to serve as the optimized experience for scalable deployments. The TANDBERG Total Telepresence Solution, including the T3 and T1, will serve as the adaptive experience for a range of solutions including customized deployments. Shortly after completion of the acquisition, Cisco will deliver high-definition, immersive, multiscreen interoperability between these systems and other multiscreen systems.


  • Multipurpose Room Systems: TANDBERG's leading Profile Series will continue to deliver a broad range of options for customer choice in the meeting room, and the Cisco TelePresence System 1300 will complement the offering with a virtual in-person experience in a multipurpose conference room.


  • Personal Systems: The strong portfolio of TANDBERG personal systems will remain, as will the Cisco TelePresence System 1100 and Cisco TelePresence System 500. The unified set of products will meet the needs of individuals in the office, at home, and on the go.


  • Platform Portfolio: TANDBERG's C-series, MXP codecs, set-top systems, and PC video and high-definition cameras will serve as the foundation for extensive integration options. These offerings will continue to be available to integrators and their customers who choose to purchase customized systems that interoperate with current and future Cisco, TANDBERG, and third-party systems.


  • Infrastructure: Both companies' entire line of infrastructure products will continue to be available to integrators and customers. This includes, for example, the industry-leading Codian Multipoint Control Units (MCUs). The joint infrastructure portfolio will form the basis of the Cisco TelePresence architecture, will provide improved interoperability with competitive solutions, and will enable intercompany services and integration with Cisco's and other companies' digital media and collaboration solutions.


  • TelePresence as a Service: Cisco TelePresence Exchange and Cisco TelePresence Public Suites offerings will continue to provide the ability to securely and scalably connect across organizational boundaries. Today, many service providers across the globe work with Cisco to deliver intercompany services that connect Cisco and other companies' endpoints.


In addition to product group announcements, it has also been determined that the TANDBERG sales and channels organization will become a specialist sales team within Cisco after close in order to assure customers they will continue to benefit from the same trusted relationships they currently enjoy with Cisco or TANDBERG representatives.

Cisco Forecasts 39X Mobile Data Growth by 2014

Globally, mobile data traffic will double every year through 2014, increasing 39 times between 2009 and 2014, according to its newly published Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast.


The study looked at current mobile data growth trends and the continued penetration of smartphones, along with predicted traffic demands from new categories of mobile devices, such as eReaders, portable video players, navigation units, portable gaming players, machine-to-machine (M2M) connections, picture frames, digital signage, etc.


Not surprisingly, mobile video has the highest growth rate of any application category measured by the survey -- a CAGR of 131 percent between 2009 and 2014. Cisco expects that almost 66 percent of the world's mobile data traffic will be video by 2014.

Some highlights of the new Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast:

  • Global mobile data traffic has increased by 160 percent over the past year to 90 petabytes per month, or the equivalent of 23 million DVDs.


  • Global mobile data traffic today is growing today 2.4 times faster than global fixed broadband data traffic.


  • Smart phones and laptop air cards are expected to drive more than 90 percent of global mobile traffic by 2014. The average smartphone user generates 10 times the amount of traffic generated by the average non-smartphone user.


  • By 2014, more than 400 million of the world's Internet users could access the network solely through a mobile connection.


  • The average mobile broadband connection generates 1.3 gigabytes of traffic per month-which is equivalent to about 650 MP3 music files. By 2014, the average mobile broadband connection is projected to generate 7 gigabytes of traffic per month-which is equivalent to about 3,500 MP3 music files.


  • The Middle East and Africa is expected to have the highest regional mobile data traffic growth rate, with a CAGR of 133 percent over the forecast period. Asia-Pacific is projected to have a 119 percent CAGR, followed by North America with a 117 percent CAGR. India is expected to the highest country mobile data traffic growth rate of any country, with a CAGR of 222 percent for the forecast period, followed by China with a 172 percent CAGR and South Africa with a 156 percent CAGR. In many countries, mobile operators are already offering mobile broadband services at prices and speeds comparable to fixed broadband which is accounting for high growth rates.

Cisco Tunes ASR 5000 for the Evolved Packet Core

Cisco has rebranded and enhanced Starent Networks' IP-based mobile core as the Cisco ASR 5000.


Cisco said its mobile Internet network architecture will help service providers deliver subscriber services across any wireless access, including 2G/3G/4G --- from cell site to packet core to data center.


The ASR 5000 now forms the centerpiece of the Cisco mobile Internet network architecture, providing subscriber management from the mobile core. The product line will be managed by the newly formed Cisco Mobile Internet Technology Group, led by Ashraf Dahod, the former president and CEO of Starent Networks.


Cisco also introduced a new Mobility Unified Reporting System for the Cisco ASR 5000, providing mobile operators with a comprehensive set of reporting and management tools that help them optimize network performance, offer customized services and improve the mobile consumer experience.

Vitesse Unleashes its Jaguar Carrier Ethernet Chips

Vitesse Semiconductor introduced its "Jaguar" family of Ethernet devices designed specifically for Carrier Ethernet. Vitesse's new architecture offers an optimized feature set for transitioning TDM circuit-switched networks to Ethernet. networks. Specifically, the Jaguar family implements service features such as full IEEE-1588 functionality and OAM (Operations, Administration, and Maintenance).


Ethernet timing support for mobile backhaul is delivered with Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE-1588v2.


Vitesse said its service-aware architecture can map client traffic to any of the thousands of services, with each individual service offering Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)-compliant policing, scheduling, and traffic shaping. A single chip provides thousands of policers and as many as 50,000 statistics to ensure and monitor Service Level Agreements. This results in unprecedented flexible service differentiation and support, allowing providers to easily deploy services such as E-Line, E-Tree, and E-LAN.


The Jaguar family launches with four devices -- two Carrier Ethernet switches: Jaguar (VSC7460) and LynX (VSC7462) and two Media Access Controllers (MACs): CE-MaX-24 (VSC7364) and CE-MaX-12 (VSC7366).


To deliver carrier-grade reliability, these devices afford hardware-generated continuity checking for Port, Link, Tunnel, and Service protection. The fast link failure detection and exclusive path protection mechanism provide reliable 50mS protection switching performance critical to carrier networks.


The Jaguar switches integrate multiple ports of Gigabit Ethernet with advanced traffic-shaping features for service-aware networks.


In addition, Vitesse's Jaguar and LynX switches support all popular connection-oriented and connectionless network protocols, including Provider Bridging, Provider Backbone Bridging (PBB), Provider Backbone Bridging with Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE), and Multi-Protocol Label Switching -- Transport Profile (MPLS-TP). Offering a dense alternative for constrained rack space, the Jaguar has 24 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports and four 10 Gigabit Ethernet XAUI ports. The LynX is a 12-port version with dual 10 Gigabit ports and the XAUI ports can be configured as four 2.5 Gbps interfaces.


The Vitesse Carrier Ethernet MACs are pin compatible with its switch devices. The MACs are available with two port counts: 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports with four 10 Gigabit ports or 12 Gigabit Ethernet ports with two 10 Gigabit ports. These MACs boast all the service-aware and traffic engineering features of Jaguar and LynX, yet are intended for delivering Ethernet services over SONET and packet optical networks.


Vitesse also plans to announce another family of Ethernet switch products specifically designed for carrier access applications such as mobile backhaul. These carrier access switches share the same software API as the Jaguar family.

Vitesse Posts Revenue of $41.7 Million

Vitesse Semiconductor reported revenues of $41.7 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2010, compared with $49.8 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2009. The company recorded a net loss of $33.9 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2010 compared with a net loss of $190.0 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2009.


"First quarter revenue was up 6% compared to the previous quarter, reflecting improved market conditions. Our core revenue, consisting of Carrier and Enterprise products, in the first quarter increased approximately 10% sequentially and 7% year-to-year," said Chris Gardner, CEO of Vitesse. "The cost cutting measures we implemented last year are working. We significantly narrowed our operating loss from the previous quarter. We are at the beginning of an ambitious new product cycle and continue to invest in R&D to support that. Google Adds Social Networking to Gmail, Smartphones

Google began rolling out its "Buzz" social networking features to Gmail and to smartphones, including Android phones and the iPhone. Support for Blackberry and Windows Mobile will be added later. Google Buzz builds a social network from contacts already in Gmail, enabling updated sharing of photos, videos and links. For mobile users, it also adds geo-location information.

NTT Boosts Japan-U.S. Backbone to 300 Gbps

NTT Communications has boosted the backbone capacity of its Global IP Network between the United States and Japan to 300 Gbps.


The company said growing use of broadband and the rising popularity of video content has created a huge demand for trans-Pacific connectivity. When it launched its Global IP Network in 1997, the company relied on a 45 Mbps link to support international Internet access for Japanese ISPs. In 2000, the acquisition of Verio and its Tier-1 IP backbone enabled NTT Com to dramatically raise its U.S.-Japan bandwidth to 1 Gbps. A year later NTT Com introduced network service level agreements (SLA) to provide the highest level of service in the industry, and in the same year the company expanded its IP backbone to the Rep. of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Australia. In 2002, the network's data transmission speed was increased to 5 Gbps, or 100 times faster than the 1997 level.


In 2005, NTT Com became the first network provider to enhance its backbone by measuring network-latency variability with a jitter-type SLA (also introduced for IPv6 in July 2009). The NTT Com Global IP Network clearly proved its reliability in December 2006, when the network was rerouted with minimal delay following a destructive undersea earthquake off Taiwan. In 2008, the company introduced a traffic analysis system to help IP network operators monitor network traffic to detect and report traffic anomalies.

Vitesse Outlines Ethernet Chip Roadmap for 2010

After 18 months of restrained capital expenditure, Vitesse Semiconductor believes carrier and data center markets are poised for significant growth in 2010 and beyond. During the downturn, Vitesse has boosted its research and development staff by 15 percent. In its product pipeline is a suite of more than 30 products bringing higher performance to the Enterprise and new carrier features to the public network.


Product introductions planned in 2010 include:

  • High-density PHYs for 10G/40G/100G optical and backplane applications;

  • High-density 10G OTN Mappers/PHYs for the Carrier wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) Metro and Core;

  • 40G/100G FEC devices for the Carrier Core;

  • 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) Carrier Ethernet switches and MACs for carrier and metro aggregation including wireless backhaul;

  • GbE Carrier Ethernet access switches for wireless/microwave backhaul edge applications and base stations;

  • 12/24-port GbE Enterprise Layer 2 switches for small-medium enterprise (SME)/small-medium business (SMB);

  • Energy-Efficient Ethernet physical-layer PHYs for copper and fiber


Vitesse also noted that it is implementing stringent network timing features based on Synchronous Ethernet and the IEEE-1588 Precision Timing Protocol in its Media Access Controllers (MACs), switches, and physical layer (PHY) products.

New EBIF Specification Enables TV Widgets, Time-Shifting

CableLabs and Canoe Ventures releases a new EBIF (Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format) specification (version I06) that features functionality to support interactive television.


EBIF I06 can be implemented on digital set-top boxes. It also is part of the OCAP (OpenCable Application Platform) specification, so EBIF-compliant advertising and programming applications can run on OCAP devices enabled with an EBIF user agent.


EBIF I06's key additions are:

  • Support for "unbound" applications, such as TV widgets that enable Caller ID on TV and sports/news tickers, and new customer service and Guide extension applications;


  • Support for time-shifted applications, such as the ability to set recording/reminders via the MSO Guide, and the ability for an EBIF application to understand if the viewer is watching live or time-shifted programming;


  • Support for addressability based on customer or device data stored in the set-top box, which allows an EBIF application to make decisions and alter its behavior based on that data, so it can deliver different ads to different demographic groups, while preserving customers' privacy


  • Other I06 additions include support for animation features, new audio resources, selector widget enhancements, application permissions and resource management for well-behaved applications.

DragonWave Launches its Horizon Quantum in Europe

DragonWave introduced its Horizon Quantum in Europe, positioning the platform for the rollout of LTE services.




The DragonWave solution features a native Ethernet implementation and sub-0.1-millisecond latencies. DragonWave's Quantum packet radio leverages several innovations, including a unique "Bandwidth Accelerator" technology that allows it to achieve superior spectral efficiency. Depending on traffic type, the company said its Bandwidth Accelerator can deliver up to 5 times improvement in spectral efficiency with versus first generation microwave radios.


The half-rack-unit device incorporates key nodal-intelligence features and integrated switching capability. This enables Horizon Quantum to perform aggregation and serve as a switch for ring and mesh network architectures.


The Horizon Quantum -- scheduled to ship by the end of 2009 -- delivers interference-free performance in both licensed and unlicensed radio frequencies in the 6-to-38-GHz range. The carrier-grade DragonWave solution enables 99.999-percent service reliability, delivers advanced security and encryption and fully supports SynchE and other critical Ethernet data transport capabilities such as virtual local area network (VLAN) queuing/prioritization, flow control and jumbo packets.
