Alcatel-Lucent signs EU's Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption

Alcatel-Lucent has signed the European Union's Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment, agreeing to make "all reasonable efforts to achieve the power consumption targets defined in the Code of Conduct for at least 90 percent of the total port count of new model items introduced."

"Alcatel-Lucent understands the concern our customers have about the impact their networks have on the environment, and we have taken an advanced, structured and holistic approach toward developing eco-sustainable solutions. A key component of our program is to build smarter, eco-sustainable networks for them, while helping them reduce their total cost of ownership," said James Watt, Chief Technology Officer, Alcatel-Lucent Carrier Group.

Alcatel-Lucent said it will annually provide the European Commission with information concerning the energy consumption of the broadband equipment covered by the Code of Conduct. This is equipment primarily deployed into service providers' networks, but Alcatel-Lucent also agreed to include certain equipment typically deployed at businesses or homes, such as DSL terminals and optical networking terminals.
http://www.alcatel-lucent.com
  • In 2008 Alcatel-Lucent committed to improving the energy efficiency of key products by at least 20 percent over the next two years, and that year Alcatel-Lucent developed eco-declarations for more than 95 percent of its product portfolio. These summarize the impact these products have on the environment, taking into account characteristics such as energy consumption, emissions, material content, packaging and disposal concerns.

Singapore's Nucleus Connect Selects Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent

Nucleus Connect, which has been appointed by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) as the operating company (OpCo) to design, build and
operate the active infrastructure for Singapore's Next Gen National Broadband Network, has selected Huawei Technologies and Alcatel-Lucent as primary vendors. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Huawei has been awarded a seven year contract to provide the end-to-end full turn-key active network solution and professional EOT (Establish, Operate, Transfer) services for the entire Next Gen NBN. The offering includes 80-Tbps IP core Clustering Router, Next Generation DWDM optical transmission, Aggregation Service Router, Terabit GPON access platform, Carrier Ethernet Switch, Multi-service ONTs and the Unified network management system for the entire active network.

Alcatel-Lucent was selected as the systems integrator for its business and operations support systems (BSS/OSS). Alcatel-Lucent's solution is built using strategic partners' off-the-shelf best of breed software products using service-oriented architecture (SOA) and data modeling is in accordance to the TM Forum SID (shared information data) model. Key functionality includes fulfillment (customer management and order handling, order management, service and network activation); Assurance (fault management, performance and QoS management, SLA management, and ITIL processes for incident, problem and change management); Billing (rating, billing, invoicing); Operations support (network and service inventory, workforce management and business intelligent reporting); and Applications enablement (SDP platform to enable on-boarding of RSP services). Alcatel-Lucent said its solution will fully support Nucleus Connect's wholesale business model.

Singapore's Next Gen NBN will be the world' s first Open Access FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) network using GPON & Active Ethernet access technology and multi-service MPLS IP Core technology. The project envisions bandwidth services ranging from 100Mbps to 1Gbps to residential users and business users. Nucleus Connect plans to commence commercial operations in Q1-2010. Actual availability of ultra high-speed broadband connectivity to homes and businesses in Singapore will depend on the roll-out schedule of the Next Gen NBN. The government of Singapore expects broadband connectivity of up to 1Gbps in 95% of homes and offices by December 2012.

The model set by the IDA is separated structurally and operationally. End-users will subscribe to services from retail service providers (RSPs), who rely on connectivity services in a wholesale model provided by the OpCo (who manages the active network). The OpCo in turn relies on the network company (NetCo) to provide access to the passive fibre network. Nucleus Connect, a wholly-owned subsidiary of StarHub, serves as the OpCo.

HSPA Mobile Broadband Gains Enterprise Traction

HSPA Mobile Broadband technology is growing in popularity amongst global organizations, according to a new survey commissioned by the GSMA of 1000 enterprises across the US, Europe and Asia Pacific.

The survey shows that on average, 12.3% of global workforces (per business) have access to mobile broadband. This figure is set to increase by 25% over the next 12 months.

A vast majority of enterprises surveyed revealed that of the equipment they provide to employees currently, more than 70% provide laptops, VPN access and various other remote access technologies. Because mobility has become one of the most important technological considerations, the provision of desktops is on the decline. This is further proved by the fact that 59% of global organisations have provided wireless internet to its employees.

While the outlook for enterprise mobile broadband technology globally looks extremely positive, the survey also revealed that only the more senior positions (60% of company directors, 62% managers) and company sales representatives (39%) are provided with mobile broadband devices.

"The findings provide an extremely encouraging global outlook for HSPA Mobile Broadband technology penetration within enterprises," says Michael O'Hara, CMO at the GSMA. "The results clearly demonstrate that enterprises are keen to innovate and have recognized the freedom and flexibility that HSPA Mobile Broadband delivers."http://www.gsmworld.com

Verizon Wireless Outlines its Road to LTE

Verizon Wireless must focus not only on building the most reliable next-generation 4G LTE wireless network in the country -- and one of the first on the globe -- but must also take a proactive approach in developing the mobile ecosystem, said Tony Melone, Verizon Wireless senior vice president and chief technology officer, speaking at the 2009 PCIA Wireless Infrastructure Show. Melone confirmed the company's LTE network build plan, saying Verizon Wireless plans to launch in 25 to 30 markets in 2010 and cover virtually all of its current nationwide 3G footprint with the next-generation network by the end of 2013. So far, everything is on schedule.

"We can build all the bells and whistles and make lots of bold claims, but none of it will matter if the network - and all of the underlying infrastructure that supports the network - isn't fundamentally reliable," Melone said. "I can promise you that reliability will continue to differentiate Verizon Wireless in the marketplace. And that is also what will differentiate the suppliers we choose. There will be no substitute for good old-fashioned engineering: reliability built in at the start based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined approach year after year will continue to be our mantra."

Melone outlined a number of collaborative initiatives undertaken by Verizon Wireless:

  • Open Development - established to help third-party developers create and certify devices to run on the company's network. To date, the company has certified more than 55 devices - mostly specialized machine-to-machine (M2M) units - to run on its 3G network. As a result, Verizon Wireless now has a tested and proven process to certify the multitude of specialty devices that will come as the 4G ecosystem evolves.

  • Verizon LTE Innovation Center - serving as an incubator for early development of both traditional and non-traditional products for use on Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network. The company is actively working with several strategic partners to help the consumer electronics industry quickly bring products to market, helping to play the role of matchmaker between the hardware and device companies and the software and application developers.

  • The Verizon Developer Community and V CAST Apps - a robust group of application developers are helping the company bring innovative applications to its customers through Verizon Wireless' forthcoming application store. V CAST Apps will launch by the end of the year so that developers can take advantage of the company's scale and distribution to market their applications to Verizon Wireless customers.

  • Joint Innovation Lab - a member of the venture with China Mobile, Softbank and Vodafone, Verizon Wireless is at the forefront in developing a software platform that will allow developers to create their mobile applications to run seamlessly across multiple operating systems.

  • Designated M2M Focus for Important Market Segments - Verizon Wireless recently formed a joint venture with Qualcomm aimed at machine-to-machine wireless services for a variety of vertical market segments, including healthcare, manufacturing, utilities, distribution and consumer products.
