Fulcrum Microsystems Releases Next Gen 10GE Switch/router Chips

Fulcrum Microsystems released its next generation of 10-Gigabit Ethernet switch/router chips, the FocalPoint FM3000 series, featuring a lossless fabric and security capabilities.

Continuous Computing has chosen the FocalPoint FM3000 series for its FlexCore ATCA-FM40 base / fabric switch blade. Continuous Computing's FM40 provides full 10GE line-rate switching for 16 slots and eight external links with a 240 Gbps non-blocking fabric switch. The backplane interface supports 10GE links for applications demanding maximum performance, but is also backward compatible with GE links for legacy products.

Fulcrum Microsystems believes the service provider network is increasingly resembling that of a large enterprise data center as they shift to an IP-based network and expand server and storage farms to deliver data services ranging from IPTV to "cloud computing" to email to data security and others.

The FM3000 series of L2+ switches features a variety of port configurations - up to 24 non-blocking 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) ports. The devices have a shared memory, output-queued architecture that makes efficient use of frame memory and enables fully provisioned multicast replication. A sophisticated set of congestion and traffic management mechanisms including class-based pause, link-level flow control and congestion notification enable lossless data transmissions while maintaining ultra-low (300ns) latency. A built-in policy engine allows designers to establish fully configurable access control lists and other types of policy-based frame forwarding - all of which can operate at full line rate with no performance degradation.

Verizon Selects Fujitsu Packet Optical Networking Platform for Transport Infrastructure

Verizon has selected Fujitsu Network Communications' FLASHWAVE 9500 platform

to enhance the metro transport infrastructure within Verizon markets in the United States. The deployment will support and consolidate SONET, Ethernet, and wavelength services traffic in a variety of applications. In the FiOS network this infrastructure will facilitate deployment of packet-based services for Verizon customers, including high-definition video on demand, higher-speed Internet access, and advanced voice services. The contract is the result of the Verizon Packet OTP RFP process. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Verizon will be utilizing several NETSMART management software tools that are common to Fujitsu optical networking products to capitalize on the operational familiarity among personnel in the Verizon regions. The Fujitsu NETSMART 1500 Element Management System (EMS) will allow Verizon to support inventory flow-back, provisioning flow-through and fault management for their entire network of Fujitsu network elements. The NETSMART 2000 optical network design tool, which removes the complexity of creating DWDM/ROADM optical network designs, will be used to expedite deployment of the FLASHWAVE 9500 platform.

  • Earlier this month, Fujitsu Network Communications announced Provider Backbone Bridging with Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) support for their newly announced FLASHWAVE CDS and existing FLASHWAVE 9500 packet optical networking platforms. PBB-TE fits into the metro aggregation network where it serves the critical need of collecting and backhauling Ethernet circuits from access locations back to the multi-service edge, which is the gateway to the backbone IP/MPLS network. The Fujitsu packet optical networking platforms allow service providers to create a distributed, connection-oriented Ethernet aggregation and transport infrastructure that natively delivers Ethernet private line and virtual private line services, and backhauls Ethernet traffic to the IP service edge.

MetaSwitch and TI Collaborate on Enhanced VoIP Monitoring

MetaSwitch has selected standards-based voice quality analysis technology from Texas Instruments (TI) for its media gateway products. This analysis technology will enhance the network monitoring capabilities of its MetaView network management system.

With the addition of this proactive monitoring and reporting feature across MetaSwitch's entire media gateway product line, service provider networks will be alerted to potential call quality issues -- even while the call is still connected. This real-time feature will allow service providers to more dynamically address a wide range of network problems, resulting in users experiencing greater overall satisfaction with their voice service.

Introduced in January 2008, the MetaView network management system enabled carriers to monitor the health of the entire VoIP network, with real-time statistics superimposed on a graphical display of the network topology. In that first release, these statistics included packet loss, delay, and jitter. The addition of TI's quality management technology in every MetaSwitch gateway will enable additional standards-based statistics such as estimated mean opinion score (MOS) to be provided.

Real-time VoIP quality monitoring is a key element of TI's PIQUA software, and leverages the IETF RFC 3611, Real Time Control Protocol Extended Reports (RTCP-XR) standard, providing a call by call, standards-based quality metric calculation and reporting mechanism. Actelis Launches New Ethernet-over-Copper for Mobile Backhaul

Actelis Networks introduced a new Ethernet-over-Copper solution aimed at mobile backhaul. The new ML650 EAD, one of the first products to receive MEF 18 certification from the Metro Ethernet Forum, delivers TDM and broadband services over a converged packet network.

Actelis said that as mobile networks evolve to pure packet-based networks, they will still require the support of TDM circuits and precise network synchronization. Its new ML650 EAD product family offers pseudowire capabilities (PWEEE) with clocking accuracy and resiliency. The company's pseudowire guarantees synchronization equal to, and even better than, that provided by traditional T1 and E1 circuits.

Verizon Extends 50/20 Mbps FiOS Internet Service

Speaking at the NXTcomm conference in Las Vegas,

Verizon President and Chief Operating Officer Denny Strigl announced that the company is expanding its FiOS Internet connections of 50/20, 20/20, 20/5 and 10/2 Mbps across all of Verizon's FiOS Internet service footprint in 16 states. The new service tiers replace the previous offerings of 30/15 Mbps and 15/15 Mbps services, respectively.

The FiOS network currently passes 10 million homes and business.

At the end of the first quarter 2008, 1.8 million Verizon customers received their broadband service over Verizon's all-fiber network, and more than 1.2 million customers had subscribed to FiOS TV.http://www.verizon.com

Chilean Service Provider Selects Ciena's Multi-degree ROADM

VTR Global Com (VTR), a leading communications service provider in Chile, has deployed Ciena's CN 4200 RS FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform throughout its Santiago network. The operator is utilizing the CN 4200's reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) functionality in its metro network infrastructure to enhance the delivery of its triple play offering. The Ciena solution was implemented by ADEXUS, Chile's largest systems integrator and a strategic resale partner in Ciena's BizConnect program. Financial terms were not disclosed.

VTR, majority-owned by North American company Liberty Global, is Chile's largest multi-channel television and residential broadband Internet provider and Chile's second largest provider of residential telephony services, reaching 1.1 million subscribers.http://www.ciena.com

Ciena Targets Software-enabled, Service-driven Networks

Ciena unveiled plans for creating software-enabled, service-driven networks that turn seemingly disparate network elements into an intelligent, cohesive platform that can be controlled on-demand.

Through its "FlexSelect" Architecture, Ciena aims to transform networks into programmable service delivery engines. Service providers would be able to adapt and scale their networks to address emerging services, turn unpredictability in service demand into business opportunities and eliminate barriers between creating and monetizing new services.

Ciena's FlexSelect Architecture initially has been focused on capacity and cost reductions for optical transport using the company's with "any service on any port". It hase been expanded to focus on network efficiency using OTN, sub-wavelength grooming and performance-grade Ethernet. The company is now further evolving its FlexSelect Architecture with a focus on creating agile, software-enabled networks running across efficient IP/Ethernet and intelligent optical platforms that can cost-effectively enable new revenue-generating services.

Ciena said key benefits of its software-driven approach include the ability to :

Alcatel-Lucent Introduces Smart Metering Solution

Alcatel-Lucent introduced a smart metering solution targeted at the utility market. The solution will make it possible for utilities to provide consumers with detailed, near real-time information about their personal energy consumption.

As a part of the solution, Alcatel-Lucent is delivering a real-time data processing system based on its Open Service Platform (OSP), offering meter reading, meter management, infrastructure and data management. Alcatel-Lucent's OSP is widely deployed by hundreds of telecommunications operators. The solution is scalable and field proven in gathering call data on hundreds of millions of telephone calls. The smart metering release of the OSP adapts the system to the requirements of the utility providers, counting kilowatt hours or gallons per minute instead of call minutes.

Motorola Introduces MPEG-4 Encoders

Motorola introduced two MPEG-4 encoder solutions for distributing high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) video for service and content providers. The new multi channel NE (network encoder) MPEG-4 AVC SD encoder family joins Motorola's 1RU SE (single channel encoder) series MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) HD and SD encoders for service providers.

The new NE series comprises real-time, full-resolution multi-channel standard definition encoders that deliver high quality CBR video services at low bit rates. The NE series features two channels in a single rack unit chassis for a high density solution designed to deliver IP-based multi-channel services, ideal for headend environments.

Allot Partners with PeerApp and Qosmo

Allot Communications and PeerApp announced a joint solution that integrates Allot deep packet inspection (DPI) devices with PeerApp's intelligent media caching solutions to optimize the delivery of video content over the Internet.

The solution helps ISPs control network bandwidth costs, increase subscriber loyalty, and create new revenue-generating services by reducing the irritating delays caused by multimedia content buffering. When deploying the PeerApp UltraBand Intelligent media caching solution with the Allot NetEnforcer or Service Gateway, Allot's DPI engine identifies Internet Video streams in real time and redirects them to the UltraBand platform.

Ultraband uses caching technology to free up bandwidth, thereby speeding up the download process and improving the subscriber experience. Allot's Service Gateway or NetEnforcer can also be used to prioritize the video application traffic to all or premium-plan subscribers, which enables ISPs to create new, revenue-generating services from Internet Video instead of just being passive purveyors of over-the-top content.

Separately, Allot Communications and Qosmos are offering a joint solution in which Allot DPI devices work in conjunction with Qosmos Information Extraction appliances to capture business-critical information and implement QoS policies in real time, to optimize any VoIP service. The integrated solution was developed as part of Allot's Service Gateway strategy, utilizing its DPI technology to enable a wide array of revenue-generating services. Juniper Enhances its Ethernet Services Routers

Juniper Networks has expanded the range of interface cards for its MX-series portfolio of Ethernet Services Routers

with the addition of three new interchangeable dense port concentrator (DPC) families.

The new dense port concentrator (DPC) cards, which are interchangeable across the entire MX-series family -- including the MX240, MX480 and MX960 -- include:

  • New copper-based Tri-rate (10/100/1000) Ethernet DPCs which enable customers to support low-speed interfaces as well as the existing high-speed interface options.

  • New 20 Gbps DPCs, which are more cost effective and efficient, requiring less power than full 40 Gbps cards. The 20 Gbps DPCs enable cost- or energy-conscious customers to benefit from the long-term investment protection that comes from the MX-series' superior performance and scalability, while keeping capital and operational costs at a minimum.

  • New Multi-rate DPCs, which increase flexibility and efficiency by enabling customers to support both Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces on a single line card.

Refelecting its broadened work scope, The DSL Forum has changed its named to The Broadband Forum.

The Broadband Forum said its expanded mission is to develop the full potential of broadband. The organization is focused on home-to-core network and management solutions.

NEC Unveils IMS-Enabled Residential and Business Services

NEC Corporation of America (NEC) announced the availability of residential and business IMS-enabled services on its "Light IMS" solution, which is realized by its Service Convergence Integrated Platform (SCI-P), a carrier-grade converged multimedia and SIP-based network architecture.

At this week's NXTcomm08, NEC is showing two end-user focused services: Home Monitoring for the residential market, and Unified Communications (UC)/Centrex, a voice-centric SaaS (Software as a Service)-based offering that addresses business telephony requirements. These new-generation services will enable users to communicate and work more efficiently, by delivering a combination of applications to a single device -- further driving the paradigm shift from a network-centric approach to a customer-driven service delivery model.

NEC's Home Monitoring service enables end-users to receive customized home security updates on any IP-enabled device. The seamless convergence of wireless/wireline access and an end-user's Home Monitoring service, allows the IP network to carry information to the end-user device; informing them of a potential security breach. As the network and services are all SIP-based, operators can rapidly roll-out these highly-scalable service offerings that work in a device-agnostic environment.

NEC is also targeting the business market with its UC/Centrex service. This VoIP offers end-users value-added enterprise-ready telephony services, in a carrier-hosted environment. In addition to lowered operational expenditures for PBX service features achieved through minimal maintenance, management and training costs, end-users receive a variety of advanced premium service features by working with CRM (Customer Relation Management) through their API. Premium services include: Social Networking, Dynamic Conferencing, Click-to-Call, Voice Recording, among others. Additionally, as part of the UC/Centrex platform, NEC offers business users a Web Universal Communications service, which allows multiple sites to share documents by using a Web browser and a regular telephone set, without the need for special client devices.

The Home Monitoring and UC/Centrex services are available today for either trial or deployment on NEC's SCI-P. Additional services available include: NEC's Background Music Call service, IP Messaging service, Web Phone Book service, among others. Additionally, the NC7000, NC9000 and NC5000-software suites are available for carrier-grade deployments today. SCI-P employs some of these software suites in a one-package implementation. Motorola Selected by TDF for WiMAX in France

TDF, a leading European provider of network services to broadcasters and telecom operators, has selected Motorola to design and deploy 802.16e WiMAX networks for several regions in France where HDRR, a TDF subsidiary, holds WiMAX frequency licenses. The three-year frame agreement with TDF follows an initial pilot at the end of 2006 and successful deployments in Loiret, Sarthe and Limousin regions which enabled the roll-out of innovative networks enabling the delivery of high speed broadband access to end users.


WiMAX Forum Announces First Certified MIMO 2.5 GHz Mobile WiMAX Products

The WiMAX Forum announced the first ten Mobile WiMAX products received the WiMAX Forum Certified Seal of Approval for the 2.5 GHz profile (titled MP05) .

The announcement included four base stations and six mobile station modules (also known as terminals) operating in the 2.5 GHz frequency band from eight WiMAX Forum member companies, including Airspan Networks, Alvarion Ltd., Beceem Communications Inc., Intel Corporation, Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd., Sequans Communications and ZyXEL. All of the newly certified 2.5 GHz mobile station modules passed the mandatory MIMO testing protocols.

Alvarion Ltd., Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd. and Sequans Communications each received the WiMAX Forum Certified Seal of Approval for a 2.5 GHz base station. Airspan Networks, Beceem Communications Inc., Intel Corporation, Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd., Sequans Communications and ZyXEL each received the WiMAX Forum Certified Seal of Approval for a 2.5 GHz mobile station module.

These 2.5 GHz products were certified at the WiMAX Forum's lead certification testing laboratory, which is operated by AT4 wireless in Malaga, Spain. Products achieving Mobile WiMAX certification were tested for functionality that supports mobility through rigorous testing including interoperability amongst vendor equipment and MIMO capabilities.

In addition, The WiMAX Forum also revealed its roadmap for 3.5 and 2.3 GHz equipment certification. The first equipment in the 3.5 GHz band to is expected to achieve certification by the end of 2008.http://www.wimaxforum.org.

Alloptic and NEC Magnus Partner on VDSL2 ONT

Alloptic is partnering with NEC Magnus Communications to develop a GE-PON VDSL2 ONT. Alloptic's Xgen7500 ONT supports 24 VDSL2 ports to provide up to 100Mbps bandwidth for both uplink and downlink. It is fully compliant with ITU-T G.993.2 VDSL2 standards.

Motorola released a new set of software products for designing, deploying and managing outdoor wireless networks. Global Crossing Adds 340 Gbps of Transatlantic Capacity

Global Crossing has expanded the capacity on its Mid-Atlantic Crossing (MAC) undersea fiber-optic cable system by 340 Gbps to meet rapidly growing demand for IP and Ethernet transport among its customers, and to enhance connectivity between North America, Latin America and Europe. The MAC system provides 10 Gbps services with a current design capacity of 1.3 Terabits. The new capacity will enable 10 Gbps IP ports and also SDH at rates up to 10 Gbps (STM-64).

The system includes approximately 4,600 route miles (7,500 Km) of fiber-optic cable and landing stations in Brookhaven, N.Y., Hollywood, Fla., and St. Croix, U.S.V.I. MAC connects Global Crossing's Pan-American Crossing (PAC(R)), South American Crossing (SAC(R)) and Atlantic Crossing 1 (AC-1(R)) subsea systems to provide full connectivity between North America, Latin America and Europe.http://www.globalcrossing.com

EXFO Launches PBT/MPLS Field-Test Solution

EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering introduced test enhancements for its Packet Blazer Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GigE) test modules, including support for Provider Backbone Bridge-Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) and Internet Protocol/Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) functionalities.

In addition, this new software suite introduces a number of testing features including support for advanced multi-stream traffic filtering techniques and 1X and 2X Fibre Channel testing. These new capabilities on the FTB-8510B and FTB-8510G Packet Blazers, combined with full-line rate TCP throughput testing and bi-directional RFC 2544 measurements, offer NSPs a comprehensive and portable tool for deploying, maintaining and troubleshooting next-generation Ethernet services.

Tellabs 8800 MSR Adds Carrier Ethernet OAM

The Tellabs 8800 multiservice router (MSR) series has been enhanced with Carrier Ethernet operations, administration, maintenance, and provisioning (OAM&P) functionality, so providers can efficiently manage and monitor networks from the network edge all the way to the customer site. The new features include enhanced support for the IEEE 802.1ag and 802.3ah standards. The enhancements enable service providers to:

  • monitor the network's heartbeat across multiple management domains so they can take action before issues arise;

  • interoperate with third-party products, so providers have intelligence about the services they deliver over more network elements;

  • remotely conduct maintenance and manage links between provider and customer hardware;

  • receive alerts if failures occur;

  • bundle multiple links between routers into one large link; and

  • remotely detect and block loops in the network.
