Nokia Siemens Networks Spins Out its OTN Team

Nokia Siemens Networks announced a deal with GIMV, a Belgian investment company specializing in private equity and venture capital, to spin-out its Open Transport Network (OTN) into an independent company. The newly formed company will be majority owned by GIMV and have approximately 80 employees.

Nokia Siemens Networks plans to continue to sell OTN products through direct channels and open up its Value Added Reseller network to OTN.http://www.nsn.com

Nortel Realigns 4G Strategy, Teams with Alvarion on WiMAX

Nortel announced a re-alignment of its 4G wireless broadband strategy including plans to focus its own wireless R&D resources on 4G LTE and wireless applications, while partnering with Alvarion to address WiMAX opportunities.

Nortel is targeting its 4G portfolio to capitalize on the rapidly growing market opportunities associated with wireless broadband - and to help operators meet these needs quickly," said Richard Lowe, president, Carrier Networks, Nortel. "WiMAX will provide fast, cost-effective coverage and mobile broadband capabilities for early movers in the wireless broadband market. LTE will provide the high-speed, high-capacity mobile broadband network evolution sought by many established network operators, allowing them to offer not only faster connections but also an enriched user experience that includes real-time services such as mobile TV, web services, mobile advertising, and carrier-hosted services for businesses."

The partnership with Alvarion features the integration of Alvarion's radio access network technology with Nortel's core network solutions, backhaul solutions, applications such as Nortel's number one carrier VoIP solution, and Nortel Global Services for WiMAX. The deal also covers the resale by Nortel of the Alvarion platform of WiMAX access products in order to form the end-to-end solution for customers. Alvarion's development of its portfolio of leading-edge WiMAX base stations will be accelerated by Nortel's contribution of resources, expertise, and funding to enhance the development of the joint solution. Both companies will also work together to perform Interoperability Testing (IOT). Alvarion will focus on device to network interoperability testing and Nortel will concentrate on the end-to-end network integration with the IP core, and applications. In order to incentivize the parties to engage in these activities, during the term of the agreement, Alvarion will be Nortel's exclusive supplier of WiMAX IEEE 802.16(e) 2X2/2X4 macro base stations and both parties have agreed to designate account leads in order to go to market in the most efficient and effective manner.

KPN Selects RADCOM for Monitoring IMS Network

that KPN, the Netherlands' major telecom operator, has selected RADCOM's Omni-Q solution for end-to-end monitoring of its IMS network. Specifically, KPN will deploy the distributed system, based on RADCOM's new R70 probes, to facilitate fault management, service performance analysis, troubleshooting and pre-mediation.

Omni-Q offers the ability to correlate network-wide sessions involving TDM, VoIP and IMS protocols in a multi-vendor environment. KPN's new IMS platform is expected to replace the existing SS7 technology over the next few years.

KPN's selection of RADCOM comes in the wake of a successful Omni-Q deployment to monitor its extensive residential VoIP network, which has handled more than a million subscribers to date. http://www.radcom.com

Nortel Confirms Financial Guidance

Nortel reconfirmed its full year 2008 outlook. The company continues to expect:

  • Revenue to grow in the low single digits compared to 2007

  • Gross Margin to be about the business model target of 43 percent of revenue

  • Operating Margin as a percentage of revenue to increase by about 300 basis points compared to 2007

Verizon Selects Nortel's Metro Ethernet Routing and PBB

Verizon Telecom has selected Nortel's Metro Ethernet Routing Switch (MERS 8600) to expand its metro Ethernet backbone.
The platform provides Provider Backbone Bridge (PBB) technology, MPLS related technology, and the Metro Ethernet Manager (MEM) system. Verizon will be testing all the MERS technologies in its laboratories for use with its Ethernet-based networks, including the Switched Ethernet Services (SES) network. The Nortel solution also includes Ethernet OAM technologies. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Nortel's said its PBB-based solution helps address scalability challenges in metro Ethernet. Additionally, fault monitoring allows rapid troubleshooting to meet strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and ensures a better customer experience.

Nortel noted that more than 30 customers around the globe selected its Carrier Ethernet solution in 2007, including, Dakota Carrier Network, Frontier Communications, Silk telecom, groupe-e, and Shanghai Telecom, among others. http://www.nortel.com

Fujitsu Announces Connection-Oriented Ethernet Transport based on PBB-TE

Fujitsu Network Communications announced Provider Backbone Bridging with Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE) support for their newly announced FLASHWAVE CDS and existing FLASHWAVE 9500 packet optical networking platforms. PBB-TE fits into the metro aggregation network where it serves the critical need of collecting and backhauling Ethernet circuits from access locations back to the multi-service edge, which is the gateway to the backbone IP/MPLS network. The Fujitsu packet optical networking platforms allow service providers to create a distributed, connection-oriented Ethernet aggregation and transport infrastructure that natively delivers Ethernet private line and virtual private line services, and backhauls Ethernet traffic to the IP service edge.

Fujitsu is positioning circuit-based PBB-TE technology as a complement to routed IP/MPLS technology rather than as a replacement. Fujitsu said PBB-TE is well-suited for this backhaul application because it matches the circuit-based operational approach of the metro network, supports the hub-and-spoke nature of the traffic demand, and enables the remote deployment of software-simple elements to funnel Ethernet traffic back to the more complex IP/MPLS routed core.

By integrating PBB-TE, also known as IEEE standard 802.1Qay, into the Fujitsu packet optical networking portfolio, service providers can construct a single universal optical infrastructure that aggregates both traditional TDM traffic and Ethernet traffic over a tightly integrated ROADM transport layer. Networks designed around packet optical networking platforms and PBB-TE make efficient use of metro wavelengths, conserve costly router ports when providing Ethernet-based access to IP services, and eliminate redundant network elements and associated cost.

"PBB-TE is an ideal technology for building Ethernet infrastructure because it delivers not only the connection performance levels that have been missing in service provider networks, but it does so in a way that is completely consistent with the simple, circuit-centric operational approach used in metro aggregation and transport networks," said Rod Naphan, vice president of product and strategic planning at Fujitsu Network Communications. "PBB-TE provides the option to push sophistication to a centralized management system while allowing network element software on distributed elements to remain simple and easy to operate."

Fujitsu also noted that the patented universal switching fabric in its FLASHWAVE 9500 platform switches PBB-TE transport tunnels as easily as it switches SONET connections, allowing for full grooming of all Ethernet transport tunnels across the full bandwidth of the system to maximize efficiency. This switching flexibility eliminates the need for stacking a subtended Ethernet service element for aggregation functionality, which creates significant capital and operational cost savings at hub locations. The tight integration between the universal switch fabric and the pluggable ROADM cards on the FLASHWAVE 9500 platform bring Ethernet aggregation to a WDM network within a single network element. BroadLight Award Patent for Native Service Transport Over PON

BroadLight has been awarded a patent for natively transporting voice and data over Passive Optical Networks (PONs). This patent, which was filed in 2002 with a Foreign Application Priority Data in 2001, defined the infrastructure for a PON frame length of 125usec which led to an overall decrease in deployment costs, increase in bandwidth and improvement in quality of service for the triple play. BroadLight said its patent describes a method of how to natively transport services such as voice and data over PON. This method eliminates the need to convert services into a single protocol at the transmitting end and then having to convert them back to their original service type at the receiving end. http://www.broadlight.com

Salira Develops Multi-wavelength PON, DOCSIS-over-PON

Salira Systems, which offers an MEF-certified EPON platform, has unveiled a multi-wavelength EPON solution that enables carriers to quadruple their PON capacity using CWDM, and a DOCSIS-over-EPON ("DePON") solution that will enable cable operators migrate from an HFC architecture to FTTx while maintaining their existing DOCSIS and OSS operating procedures.

Salira's Multi-Wavelength PON (or "MW-PON") solution enables carriers and operators to quadruple the bandwidth capacity of existing fiber networks. Salira's solution uses an implementation of CWDM to increase bandwidth capacity from 1 Gbps to 4 Gbps on each fiber feeder without any upgrades to the outside plant. On the CPE side, Salira uses SFP modules for the specific wavelength.

Salira's new DePON provides symmetrical capacity of up to 4Gbps per fiber feeder. Cable operators might use the architecture to grow their residential customer base in greenfield applications while they simultaneously compete for a larger share of the commercial market. DePON would coexist with existing DOCSIS-based systems such that cable operators can opportunistically implement solutions that best fit the requirements of varying deployment types.

Compared with CWDM implementations, Salira said its point-to-multipoint solutions are far more economical than point-to-point configurations. Furthermore, point-to-point CWDM solutions require their own network management systems. In contrast, Salira's DePON system allows one pre-existing OSS to control both residential and commercial deployments simultaneously. All current billing and maintenance systems are unchanged, and there is no need to re-train network operators familiar with DOCSIS. Furthermore, as the 10Gbps EPON standards are ratified, operators will be able to increase bandwidth capacity and expand service offerings accordingly without any changes to the fiber plant or the management platform.

InnoPath Extends Mobile Device Management to WiMAX

InnoPath Software, which provides Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems to leading global operators, has extended its iMDM mobile device management suite to include support for WiMAX devices. This new support enables WiMAX operators to meet consumer expectations for broadband wireless by provisioning new WiMAX devices as subscribers sign up on the network. The MDM platform then enables Customer Care and Enterprise Care capabilities to provide remote device management that includes firmware and software updates delivered automatically by the network.

InnoPath said it pursuing a network-agnostic MDM evolution strategy, as previously its iMDM was the only MDM server supporting CDMA and GSM from the same platform.

InnoPath's iMDM suite is already deployed by leading Tier-1 CDMA and GSM operators globally and WiMAX is the just the first broadband wireless protocol that the company will support. The company is also applying its proven operational expertise to assist operators through WiMAX deployment issues such as roaming between networks.

WiChorus Unveils SmartCore Platform for 4G Networks

WiChorus, a start-up based in San Jose, California, unveiled its "SmartCore" platform for managing subscribers and monetizing services on WiMAX and long-term evolution (LTE) networks. WiChorus provides an order of magnitude greater throughput capacity over existing 3G platforms for delivering 4G mobile services on a large scale. In addition to performance, the platform incorporates deep packet inspection and peer-to-peer traffic-management capabilities at line rate for offering managed services.

BT Wins $650 Million Managed Services Contract with Procter & Gamble

BT was awarded a five year contract valued at US$650 million to provide and manage a broad and integrated portfolio of services for Procter & Gamble (P&G) . Under the deal, BT will provide and manage P&G's local and wide area network infrastructure across more than 1,100 locations in more than 82 countries. In addition, BT will migrate these services to an IP/MPLS network. BT will also provide and manage perimeter security and firewall services, conferencing, remote access, voice and IP telephony services, and Internet services to support P&G's IT requirements.

Calix Expands its Access and Aggregation Portfolios

Calix announced several additions to its access portfolio for both fiber and copper networks. The Calix E5-120 and E5-121 Ethernet Service Platforms (ESPs) -- part of the Calix E-Series multiservice over Ethernet product family -- expand the portfolio of options available to service providers by addressing the growing bandwidth needs of residential and business customers. The Calix E5-400 is a carrier-grade Ethernet Access platform offering 10GE and multiple gigabit Ethernet (GE) aggregation options for FTTP and last-mile copper infrastructure.

The Calix E5-120 and E5-121 Ethernet Service Platforms deliver VDSL2 capability will offering ADSL fallback, enabling them to interoperate with ADSL modems already deployed in service provider networks. Key capabilities include:

  • The E5-121 combo platform supports lifeline and SIP voice services as well as VDSL2 for broadband services

Belgacom uses Acme Packet SBC for VoIP Interconnects in GSMA IPX Trial

Acme Packet's Net-Net Session Director session border controllers (SBC) have completed GSM Association (GSMA) IP eXchange (IPX) packet voice interworking trials with Belgacom International Carrier Services (BICS). The IPX is a global multilateral IP interconnect network.

In BICS' recently completed IPX Pre-Commercial Implementation (PCI) carrier trial, Acme Packet's Net-Net SBC was used to meet the IPX technical requirements to exchange packet voice traffic between two mobile operators. Additional IPX trials are being planned for 2008. Multiple IPX carrier and connecting service provider participants will use Acme Packet's SBCs as part of those trials.

In the 2007 PCI testing, Acme Packet's SBC was the only session border controller used in all three trials focused on Bilateral Service Transit and Multilateral Service Hub modes. Telefónica International Wholesale and Telenor Global Services used Acme Packet SBCs for those trials. In 2005 and 2006, Acme Packet Net-Net SBCs were used in proof of IPX concept testing. These tests exchanged supplemental SIP/IMS services such as video share among IPX carriers and mobile operators.

Acme Packet said its Net-Net SBC meets and exceeds all inter-operator functional requirements defined by the GSMA, including:

  • Security - IP Proxy denial-of-service attack self-protection, access control and topology hiding

  • Interoperability - 3GPP IMS SIP standards compliance, SIP header modification and normalization, SIP transport protocol interworking, dynamic IP address and port translation, transcoding and transrating

India's Tata Communications Expands in Africa

Tata Communications is expanding the reach of its network into Africa through an arrangement with South Africa's Neotel.

Tata has established a multi-service Point of Presence (PoP) in Johannesburg in association with Neotel. The companies will partner on IP/MPLS-based high-speed internet, VPN, network management and hosting services to customers in South Africa.

The new PoP offers MPLS, Ethernet, IP and International Private Leased Circuit (IPLC) services, connecting through Tata Communications' global network to over 600 cities in 50 countries and onwards to customers in over 200 countries. ANDA Introduces Multivendor, Carrier Ethernet Element Management System

ANDA Networks introduced a multi-vendor Carrier Ethernet element management system (EMS) powered by Nakina Systems' operating system. ANDA's new EtherView 2.0 management platform scales to over 10,000 nodes while maintaining management visibility across multiple equipment vendors' products. The company said it developed its EtherView 2.0 in order to support all of its EtherTone portfolio platforms, which include EtherEdge, EtherReach and EtherSLAM access equipment, as well as many other typical upstream network devices such as switching and routing platforms from Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Extreme, Foundry, Fujitsu, Juniper, Nortel, and Tellabs as examples. T-Mobile Venture Fund Invests in deCarta for LBS

T-Venture, the venture capital arm of Deutsche Telekom AG. has made a $6 million equity investment in deCarta, a developer of software and services for the Location-Based Services (LBS) industry. T-Mobile Venture Fund joins deCarta's existing premiere investors Cardinal Venture Capital, Mobius Venture Capital and Norwest Venture Partners.

deCarta's geospatial software platform gives mobile LBS application developers and mobile operators the ability to quickly build and deploy applications that integrate a wide variety of map and data sources to provide complex local search, navigation, mapping, social networking and spatial search functions.

Motorola to Include Recently Auctioned LTE Spectrum Bands in First Commercial Release

When Motorola releases its first commercial products for Long-Term Evolution (LTE) next year it will include products for the 700MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum bands. Motorola also announced that its LTE solution will support the future LTE Time Division Duplex (TDD) variant to meet the need of operators with a TDD spectrum holding. Motorola is engaged in LTE trials with operators in North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

Motorola's LTE base station solution is comprised of its common platform site controller unit that will be shared between WiMAX 802.16e and LTE plus a variety of radio head solutions to meet specific customer requirements. The portfolio includes frame based-mounted radios, remote radio heads and tower top radios to support a wide variety of LTE deployment scenarios across newly available spectrum as well as existing GSM, UMTS and CDMA spectrum. Motorola's flexible eNode B architecture allows many spectrum bands to be supported with limited development investment.

"We believe deploying LTE in the 700 MHz band is mandatory to meet the needs of wireless carriers in the U.S. market as well as a number of other countries globally," said Darren McQueen, Motorola vice president, Wireless Broadband Access Technologies. "In addition, there is a clear demand for LTE in 2.6GHz spectrum band to meet the needs of GSM carriers that have already secured the spectrum in the global market."

iamba and Wintegra Partners on GPON Solutions for MDU

iamba Networks and Wintegra are collaborating on the development of a GPON solution for Multiple Dwelling Units (MDUs). Specifically, iamba's iSN1000D GPON SoC will be tightly integrated with Wintegra's WinArrow2 product family creating a high-end solution for GPON MDU application for VDSL2 end users. The companies said their solution delivers QoS on both the downstream and upstream, full compliance with the DSL Forum technical spec, WT-156 and full programmability and future proofing through the Wintegra WinArrow2 NPU architecture. Additional benefits of the jointly developed product include covering a range of port densities from as few as 8 ports and up to 48 ports, WinArrow's rich software offering, including extensive set of data path and control path stacks, and iamba's end-to-end GPON software offering, including OMCI management stack.

Cisco to Acquire DiviTech for Video Management Software

Cisco agreed to acquired Denmark-based DiviTech A/S, a provider of digital-service management (DSM) solutions for media broadcasters, cable operators and IPTV service providers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

DiviTech's DSM technology includes a software application that will allow service provider customers to centrally provision and easily deliver localized content, such as local and regional news and on-demand video and services, within a specific geography.

Cisco said the acquisition will further enhance its video-delivery strategy. Cisco plans to integrate DiviTech's DSM product with the Cisco ROSA network- and element-management solution to create an end-to-end platform that offers all layers of digital video management (element, network and service) in a single modular product.

ADVA Heads CELTIC's 100GET Initiative for 100 Gbps Metro Ethernet

ADVA Optical Networking is heading a group of university and enterprise partners in developing standards-based, carrier-class metropolitan Ethernet transport networks designed for speeds of 100 Gbps. The metro-focused group is one of four in the "100GET" (GET=Gigabit Ethernet Transport) innovation initiative that is scheduled to continue until 2010 and receive total public and private investment of more than EUR 200 million.

The primary goal of the project is to develop a 100 Gbps muxponder prototype for the metro area. Further plans call for ADVA Optical Networking's systems to enable a 100 Gbps demonstrator at Berlin's Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute, as well as in the OCTET (Open Environment for Advanced Carrier Ethernet Technologies) field testbed from Deutsche Telekom. As of January 2008, there were30 project partners from Germany, France, and Sweden. CELTIC is a EUREKA cluster programme, which initiates and runs privately and publicly funded R&D projects in the field of telecommunications.
