Nevis Networks Uncovers Flaw in Microsoft Windows Live OneCare

Nevis Networks, which supplies secure switching and identity-based policy enforcement appliances, has identified vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows Live OneCare, which is the new, subscription-based service provided by Microsoft to protect Windows computers. OneCare provides anti-virus protection, a two-way firewall, a back-up utility and system tune-ups.


According to Nevis, the vulnerabilities allow remote unauthenticated attackers to launch a Denial of Service (DoS) attacks on the Windows Live OneCare/Windows Defender/ForeFront. Microsoft has issued an update to correct this vulnerability.http://www.nevisnetworks.com

Virtela Appoints Steve King as CEO

Virtela, a global network solutions provider based in Denver, announced the appointment of Steven R. King as president and CEO. King also becomes a member of the company's board of directors. Previously, King was president and CEO of ZANTAZ Inc., a pioneer in compliance content archiving and e-discovery leveraging the Software as a Service (SaaS) model. Prior to ZANTAZ, King held a number of executive positions at E*TRADE Group Inc., where he played a key role in growing the company from under $100 million to more than $1.5 billion in revenues. He ultimately became CEO of E*OFFERING, the pioneering online investment bank of E*TRADE, acquired by Wit SoundView Group.


Virtela has developed a "Global Service Fabric" for delivering critical enterprise applications with a services suite that includes MPLS- and IP-based virtual private networks (VPNs), security services, remote monitoring and management of WAN/LAN infrastructure, and converged services (data, video, voice). Virtela's network reach spans more than 190 countries. NEC to Supply Submarine Cable System for Indosat

Indosat, the leading international telecommunications operator in Indonesia, has selected NEC to supply a submarine cable system linking Indonesia and Singapore. The "JAKABARE" (Java - Kalimantan - Batam - Singapore) Submarine Backbone Network will stretch over 1,300km and connect Jakarta (Java), Pontianak (Kalimantan), Batam Island and Changi (Singapore) using NEC's state-of-the-art optical fiber transmission system based on 10 Gbps x 64 wavelengths DWDM. TI Introduces Newest VoIP Gateway Solutions

Texas Instruments introduced the newest members of its VoIP gateway silicon and software solutions that will enable equipment manufacturers to scale from eight to several hundreds of channels while supporting advanced voice and video features.


TI's newest gateway solutions are powered by its TMS320C64x+ digital signal processor (DSP) that significantly increases performance for VoIP and video encode, decode and transcode applications. This allows manufacturers to integrate video capabilities to their products and still support voice and fax communications between TDM and packet telephony networks.


The new TNETV2664, TNETV2666, TNETV2686 and TNETV2689 support an Ethernet interface and full IP encapsulation that allows the DSPs to put voice media directly on the network. TI said this integration enables manufacturers to choose a smaller, more cost-effective host processor thereby simplifying their hardware design and reducing overall bill of material (BOM) costs. TI's gateway solutions include pin compatible options with different channel densities, which gives equipment manufacturers the ability to design a common hardware architecture that can scale across a range of product configurations and applications.


The improved processing power enabled by the C64x+ architecture combined with increased on-chip memory significantly improves voice gateway performance while enabling higher channel densities.

Motorola Introduces Universal Edge QAM

Motorola introduced a high density, low cost and low power universal edge QAM designed to enable MSOs to economically deploy additional QAM capacity to meet growing consumer demand for personalized, high-bandwidth services. Motorola said its new APEX1000 QAM complements its suite of bandwidth-expansion solutions including DOCSIS 3.0 based channel bonding, switched digital video and deep-fiber technologies. The APEX1000 platform supports standards-based video and high-speed data interfaces, while the physical chassis offers field swappable QAM modules and redundant swappable power supplies in a low power 1 RU platform. Any of the QAM channels available can be used for VOD, SDV, broadcast services or DOCSIS high-speed data.




The APEX1000 (All Purpose Edge QAM) features:

EarthLink Abandons Philly Wi-Fi Network

EarthLink is terminating its Philadelphia Wi-Fi service and an negotiations to transfer the Wi-Fi network to the city government or a non-profit organization failed.


EarthLink has also filed today a proceeding in federal court seeking a declaration that EarthLink may remove its equipment from the City's street lights and that EarthLink's total potential liability may not exceed $1 million.


"EarthLink has worked diligently for many months to transfer our Wi-Fi network to a new owner -- at no cost," said Rolla Huff, EarthLink's chairman and chief executive officer. "Unfortunately, our hope that we could transfer our network to a non-profit organization that had planned to offer free Wi-Fi throughout Philadelphia will not be realized.   • In October 2005, The City of Philadelphia selected EarthLink to develop and implement what was to be the largest municipal Wi-Fi network in the U.S. No City or taxpayer dollars were to be used to fund the project. EarthLink agreed to finance, build and manage the wireless network, and provide Wireless Philadelphia with revenue sharing fees to help support the Wireless Philadelphia Non-Profit Corporation. EarthLink planned to implement a 135-square-mile, city-wide Wi-Fi mesh network, which was expected to be fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2006.

NTT's Hikari Optical Access Reaches 8.78 million, DSL Contracts

NTT reported that the number of FLET'S Hikari optical access subscriptions reached 8.78 million as of March 31, 2008, up from 3.2 million a year earlier. Meanwhile, the number of ADSL subscribers fell to 4.6 million from 5.3 million a year earlier. Likewise, the number of conventional telephone lines fell to 39.2 million from 43.3 million last year.


In the mobile communications market, NTT noted the introduction of mobile number portability in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2006 and market entry by new carriers, along with fierce price competition. The number of cellular subscribers reached 53.4 million, up from 52.6 million a year earlier.


Despite increases in IP/packet communications service revenues from FLET'S Hikari and FOMA and system integration revenues, NTT Group's consolidated operating revenues were 10,680.9 billion yen for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2008 (a decrease of 0.7% from the previous fiscal year) due to a decline in fixed voice related services revenues. Consolidated operating expenses were 9,376.3 billion yen (a decrease of 2.9% from the previous fiscal year), due to cost reductions and a decrease in operating expenses resulting from the return of the substitutional portion of pension assets to the government. Consolidated operating income was 1,304.6 billion yen (an increase of 17.8% from the previous fiscal year), consolidated income before income taxes was 1,322.3 billion yen (an increase of 16.7% from the previous fiscal year), and consolidated net income was 635.2 billion yen (an increase of 31.9% from the previous fiscal year).

NTT DOCOMO announced a new management team headed by new president and CEO Ryuji Yamada, who previously served as the company's senior executive vice president. NTT and KT Venture Forum Targets NGN Applications

NTT and KT announced plans for a "Venture Forum" (provisional name) for developing new business models which will enable both companies to expand into new areas in the global IT industry. The "NTT-KT Venture Forum" will work with other companies, including startup companies, toward the early development and commercialization of applications and other services for broadband and next-generation networks.

Ericsson Supplies HSPA Modules for Dell Laptops

Dell will offer built-in HSPA mobile broadband modules from Ericsson beginning in Q2 2008. The modules use Ericsson's in-house HSPA chipset.


The companies said the built-in mobile broadband module provides superior downloading and uploading performance and takes less power from the battery. The module also has a GPS receiver, to be used together with positioning applications.


Market projections indicate that in 2011, approximately 200 million notebooks will ship annually and Ericsson anticipates that 50 percent of those notebooks will feature a built-in HSPA mobile broadband module.http://www.ericsson.com

Alcatel-Lucent Supplies ASON/GMPLS Optical Net for Tianjin Power

China's Tianjin Power, a municipal electricity provider, selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy an intelligent optical transport infrastructure to streamline energy and corporate operations.


The Alcatel-Lucent solution, using an intelligent control plane key for dynamic networking and traffic protection, will enable Tianjin Power to set up and tear down connections over its optical transport network in real-time for a wide range of applications including high-speed data backup and employee training sessions.


An intelligent control plane based on automatically switched optical network/generalized multi-protocol label switching (ASON/GMPLS) technology is key for dynamic networking and traffic protection. Its introduction over the Alcatel-Lucent 1678 Metro Core Connect (MCC) that will be deployed in Tianjin Power's transport network will enable the unique in-service transformation from a centralized to a distributed restoration mechanism that offers superior network protection, operation and maintenance capabilities.


The contract was secured by Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese flagship company, and is the first deployment of this kind in the Asia-Pacific utility segment. Financial terms were not disclosed.

AT&T Offers 10 Mbps U-verse Service for SMBs

AT&T has begun offering a mew High Speed Internet U-verse Enabled Business Edition service offering download speeds up to 10 Mbps. The service, which is being launched in 40 markets, can serve up to 32 Internet access connections over existing telephone wiring in the customer's business.

AT&T Business U-verse also provides free unlimited access to the company's nationwide Wi-Fi network, which has more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hot spots nationwide and is being expanded into more than 7,000 U.S. company-operated Starbucks locations.


AT&T Business U-verse also features wireless office networking at no additional charge.

AT&T has signed Sony Corp. as the latest licensee in its global MPEG-4 video-licensing program. Sony is AT&T's fourth licensee in Japan. Former Symbol/Motorola Executive Joins Meru

Meru Networks announced the appointment of Sarosh Vesuna as Vice President of Business Development. He reports to Meru CEO Ihab Abu-Hakima.


Vesuna comes to Meru from Motorola, where he was senior director of strategy and business development for the company's wireless LAN business, overseeing corporate development, partner alliances and strategic direction. He had previously spent 15 years as senior director of strategy and business development at Symbol Technologies (acquired by Motorola in 2007), where he was instrumental in the development of key partnerships with such companies as Nokia, IBM, Cisco, Nortel, HP, Microsoft and Intel.


A co-author of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN protocol, Vesuna also co-founded the Wi-Fi Alliance and served on its board of directors and as treasurer and technical committee chair. AppTrigger Introduces Ignite Application Session Controller 9.0

AppTrigger released version 9.0 of its "Ignite" Application Session Controller (ASC), adding key performance enhancements, including support for Bearer Independent Call Control (BICC) and Media Server Markup Language (MSML). Juniper T1600 to be Deployed in GÉANT2 Network

DANTE, an international research and education network provider, is upgrading the core GÉANT2 infrastructure using Juniper Networks' T1600 platform. The will enable DANTE to deliver a range of new, high-capacity services based on IPv6 and 40 Gbps technologies. The network is being deployed by Imtech Telecom Global, a Juniper Networks Elite partner. Currently deployed in the GÉANT2 network are the Juniper Networks T640 and M120 routers, which run the same, consistent JUNOS software that powers the T1600.


DANTE is responsible for the pan-European GÉANT2 network that interconnects National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) across Europe. GÉANT2 serves over 30 million users in 34 countries. Cisco expanded its high-definition video conferencing portfolio with a personal TelePresence system for use in individual offices and a large TelePresence room ideal for group training and cross-functional team meetings.
