RadiSys to Acquire Intel's Modular Communications Platforms

RadiSys will acquire certain assets of Intel's modular communications platforms business, including its ATCA platforms and certain PCI products, for $25 million plus $6.75 million of inventory and other considerations. RadiSys expects the transaction to add at least $50 million of ongoing revenue per year once integrated into RadiSys' operations. The deal is expected to close this month.



The acquisition extends RadiSys "Promentum" AdvancedTCA (ATCA) product family. Products associated with the sale include ATCA compute and packet processing blades, ATCA chassis, and Chassis Management Hardware and Software Modules, AMC module as well as cPCI blades, cPCI chassis, and other legacy systems products. A significant number of the employees associated with these product lines, including engineering, product testing/validation, operations and marketing personnel are expected to accept offers from RadiSys and transition with the product lines.



"RadiSys is pleased to add the Intel modular communications platform assets to our product portfolio and is committed to ensuring our new customers needs are well serviced both in the short and long term," said Scott Grout, RadiSys president and CEO.



Intel said the sale sharpens its focus on communications and embedded market segments that are aligned with its core businesses, which include processors and other silicon components for telecom. The planned sale does not impact Intel's carrier-grade rack mount servers product lines.

  • In June 2007, RadiSys introduced an Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) Digital Signal Processing (DSP) blade that hosts up to 20 multi-core MSC8144 DSPs from Freescale Semiconductor, providing a major boost in processing power required in next-generation VoIP, media processing and media gateway solutions. The new Promentum ATCA-9100 Media Resource Module features a mezzanine design to host a farm of up 20 of these quad-core, Freescale DSPs. This reduces the hardware footprint of such next-gen telecom systems by over 50 percent while attaining the same media processing capacity. The mezzanine design also allows telecommunications equipment manufacturers to upgrade over time from one generation of DSP to another without a complete overhaul of the blade.


  • In September 2006, RadiSys completed its acquisition of Convedia, a leading supplier of IP media processing technologies and IP media server products. RadiSys paid $105 million in cash at closing.

AT&T Wins $6 Million Contract With Ericsson to Provide VPN in the Middle East

Ericsson selected AT&T to provide a VPN linking its facilities across the Middle East. Under the $6 million contract, AT&T will provide VPN services to support Ericsson's growing business activities in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. AT&T already provides network services to Ericsson's business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and the Americas.

MINO Wireless Appoints Former Groove Exec as CEO

MINO Wireless, a start-up based in Sunnyvale, California, appointed Dr. Bathsheba J. Malsheen as president and chief executive officer. Dr. Malsheen joins MINO Wireless from Groove Mobile, a mobile music service provider, where she served as CEO. Prior to Groove, Dr. Malsheen served as president and chief executive officer of Voxware, a global provider of mobile voice-based enterprise solutions for distribution and warehouse operations. Earlier, she served as general manager of Centigram Communications Corporation's Speech Business Unit.



MINO Wireless helps enterprise firms manage and control their international mobile calling costs. MINO's service blends cellular and VOIP infrastructure with thin-client/server applications and management tools to provide total control and cost management of international mobile services. GotVoice Offers Automated Voicemail Transcription Service

GotVoice, a start-up based in Kirkland, Washington, has enhanced its web-based voicemail service with a new transcription capability that automatically checks voice messages from a user's mobile, home and office phones and then sends an SMS and/or email with the transcribed text. The transcribed message, along with the associated voicemail audio file, can be reviewed and searched via the service's web interface.



Unlike services that require a new number or call forwarding, GotVoice does not require a change in consumer behavior and works with major U.S. mobile and home phone carriers. Key capabilities include visual voicemail, allowing the user to see a list of new voicemails via the web interface and then choose which to hear first. An MP3 file of the incoming message can be forwarded to your email account. The GotVoice service can also be used to broadcast user-recorded voice messages to a list of recipients.



GotVoice is offering a free, advertising-supported basic service. The new transcription service is available as part of a Premium tier that is priced at $9.95 per month. Corporate service is also available.

AT&T Kicks Off New Marketing Campaign

AT&T kicked off a new "Your Seamless World" corporate ad campaign designed to underscore that AT&T is now "a mobility-centric company capable of meeting the needs of today's mobile lifestyles."



AT&T said its new ads will convey a younger, edgier and more contemporary style -- all attributes closely associated with wireless.



Borrowing from its wireless group, AT&T has also embraced orange as the primary color in its palette; blue will remain the color of the corporate logo and function as a color in a secondary, complementary color palette. Ads, company signage and even the company's Web site are all undergoing a color makeover.

Matisse Raises $45 Million for Optical Burst Switching

Matisse Networks, a start-up based in Mountain View, California, raised $45 million in Series C funding for its "EtherBurst" optical switching technology, which employs optical burst transponders that switch packet traffic in bursts at different wavelengths.



Merrill Lynch PCG invested $35M in the round, which included all existing investors including Menlo Ventures, Monitor Ventures, Walden International and Woodside Fund. To date, Matisse Networks has raised total financing of $80 million.



The company argues that the worldwide installed base of over 400,000 SONET/SDH optical rings are incapable of meeting the bandwidth demand for packet services created by both the consumer's appetite for high bandwidth applications such as IPTV, and the enterprise's migration to high speed carrier Ethernet services.



Unlike current Ethernet-over-DWDM metro architectures, which rely on pre-provisioned point-to-point optical circuits, Matisse Networks is developing a system that applies the principles of packet switching to the optical layer. Instead of dedicated optical circuits, the goal is a more highly efficient, layer 2 packet-switched photonic layer.



Etherburst relies on Matisse's patented 10 Gbps "Tango" optical burst transponder, which is capable of tuning and locking to any wavelength in the ITU C-band in nanoseconds. Matisse is using off-the-shelf, commercially available tunable lasers along with its own silicon and intellectual property. Burst scheduling, collision avoidance and quality of service (802.1 p and DiffServ) enforcement are provided by Matisse Network's patented "MeshWave" packet processor.



Matisse Networks also announced the following key additions to its team-- Doug Stewart, vice president of sales for North America Europe, Middle East; Shigeru Ota, vice president sales for Asia Pacific; and Gouri Shankar, head of the Matisse Networks design center in Hyderabad, India.

Spirent Adds High Performance CPU Module on Spirent TestCenter

Spirent Communications announced the availability of a High Performance CPU Module on Spirent TestCenter. The company said the new module enables test engineers to validate performance for their network systems under intense load and in high traffic environments, be it unencrypted or encrypted traffic. ICO and Clearwire to Conduct Mobile Video Trial

ICO Global Communications, which is developing an advanced hybrid system, combining both satellite and terrestrial communications, and Clearwire agreed to collaborate on a mobile video trial.



In addition to testing mobile video broadcast, the trial will also examine the feasibility of utilizing Clearwire's 2.5 GHz spectrum and ICO's 2.0 GHz spectrum more efficiently. The ICO trial with Clearwire is expected to begin in early 2008 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and ICO is also planning a similar trial in Las Vegas, Nevada.



For the trial, ICO will integrate its Mobile Interactive Media (MIM) suite of services with the Clearwire broadband network. ICO MIM is a converged mobile media service which delivers consumer entertainment and communications services, all based on ICO's next-generation satellite and terrestrial wireless communication capabilities.



For the trial, ICO MIM will provide multiple channels of high-quality mobile video to large-screen user devices. Alcatel-Lucent has been chosen to supply the system architecture and design based on mobile multimedia DVB-SH open standard, and Hughes Network Systems has been tapped to provide the device as well as the interactive elements based upon the proven GMR standard.

Canada's TELUS to Deploy Siemens WLAN DSL Gateway

TELUS will deploy Siemens' Gigaset SE567 WLAN DSL Gateway as an in-home networking solution for its broadband customers.



The Gigaset SE567 Gateway combines an ADSL 2+ Modem, four 10/100 Ethernet ports, one which may be configured as a WAN interface, as well as 802.11b/g WiFi capabilities with an "Intellisteer" smart antenna with beam forming technology in a single product. The Gateway also includes security features such as a configurable ICSA-compliant stateful inspection firewall with Denial of Service (DoS) protection. The gateway also features a QoS subsystem incorporating separate QoS classifier, Queue manager and scheduler.

Nokia Siemens Networks and Intel are cooperating on Digital Home Networking for IPTV. Both companies support the use of UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standards for Home Networking.



Nokia Siemens Networks' end-to-end IPTV solution uses its field-proven, leading middleware as well as best-of-breed components for encryption/content protection, content server, TV headend and set-top box.



PCs based on Intel Viiv Processor Technology are built with Intel's high performance dual-core and quad-core processors, chipsets, networking silicon and special software. These PCs are complemented by online entertainment services and applications that have been verified to work with the Intel Viiv Technology -- enabling consumers to access and share content.



The new Digital Home Networking features of Nokia Siemens Networks' IPTV solution enable users to share their favorite content from their private PCs with all the TV sets in the household via the set-top box.

Raza Partners with Newport Media, Softronix, DiBcom for Mobile TV

Raza Microelectronics has added Newport Media and Softronix Corporation to its MIPS-Based eco-system, the RMI Partner Alliance (RPA). This hardware and software combination adds the necessary components, when combined with an RMI Alchemy Au1250, to power mobile devices providing full MobileTV functionality, including DVB-T/H, DMB, and ISDB-T.



Newport Media is a fabless semiconductor company that supplies innovative products to the mobile broadcast media market. The company's Sundance Series SOC solution uses proprietary circuit technology and advanced system architectures, providing a complete receiver platform supporting a wide variety of emerging MobileTV standards.



Softronix brings a DTV software solution supporting major DTV standards worldwide. The Softronix software package enables TV applications on RMI Alchemy powered mobile devices. In addition to their TV application software, Softronix's underlying value is in embedded DTV middleware for handheld devices, including PDA, PMP and PND products.

Pace Unveils WiMAX Bridging 802.16e and 802.11n

Pace Micro Technology demonstrated a home networking solution that combines 802.16 WAN delivery with 802.11n distribution in the home.
The demonstration consists of a server unit in the home, which connects wirelessly to an external WiMAX base station using Pace's "Connections Suite software" -- which has been entirely developed at Pace. This server unit then delivers broadband content -- either video or data or both -- to clients around the home, including set-top boxes, mobile phones and PCs, using WiFi.



Pace is teaming up with Metalink and Runcom Technologies, the pioneer in OFDMA enabling technologies for Mobile WiMAX to enable this demonstration.

Alcatel-Lucent and Samsung Demo Mobile TV in S-Band

Alcatel-Lucent and Samsung Electronics are demonstrating live broadcast mobile TV in S-Band using a Samsung SGH-P930 handset.



Users are able to interact with the content of all the 3G/unicast and broadcast mobile TV channels available on the handset. This enables the provisioning of new interactive services offered as a complement to linear mobile TV, such as voting, content downloading or mobile commerce for 3G and broadcast channels.



The demonstration is enabled by the Streamezzo Rich Media engine, ported on the Samsung specific Operating Systems interfaced with Samsung DVB-SH stacks, and integrated with the Alcatel-Lucent's Service Delivery Platform.



The specifications of the DVB-SH standard were approved by the DVB Project on February 14, 2007. The commercial availability of Samsung's DVB-SH models is expected in Q1 2008.



Alcatel-Lucent's Unlimited Mobile TV solution is an end-to-end solution encompassing network infrastructure for DVB-H and DVB-SH (including terrestrial transmitters, antenna systems, satellite and backhauling), network head-end, application platform, unicast/broadcast integration, and professional services like deployment, operation and maintenance. This solution is supported by an ecosystem of partners including major chipsets vendors and terminals manufacturers. Alcatel-Lucent helps mobile TV services providers design, develop, deploy and operate effective mobile TV solutions, optimized specifically for their environment in terms of technologies and spectrums.

Broadcom Announces Next Gen STB Chip

Broadcom announced its next gen system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution for cable, satellite and IP set-top boxes (STBs). The new SoC builds on Broadcom's portfolio of HD video compression solutions by utilizing 65 nanometer process technology to significantly reduce bill of materials (BOM) costs and enable higher levels of integration and system performance versus currently available solutions.



The new BCM7405 digital video/audio chip supports the latest in interactive features, a range of video compression standards (i.e. VC-1, WMV9, H.263-H.264, MPEG-4, DIVX) and offers support for digital rights management solutions, including Microsoft DRM10, Secure Video Processor (SVP) technology (a joint venture between NDS and STMicroelectronics) and Marlin JDA (a joint development association formed by Intertrust Technologies, Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic), Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics and Sony Corporation). Motorola Reaches Milestone: 2 Million IP STBs

Motorola has shipped its two millionth IP set-top box. The milestone was reached just five months after the shipment of its one millionth IP set-top box. The two millionth set-top -- a VIP1510 -- was shipped as part of the provision of 150,000 units to TeliaSonera.

Broadcom Adds Bluetooth to STBs

Broadcom unveiled a new platform that combines its Bluetooth wireless solutions with its digital cable and satellite television set-top box (STB) technologies. The goal is to expand traditional STB functionality and make these systems compatible with the vast and growing universe of Bluetooth remote control, audio and handset devices.
Potential benefits of adding Bluetooth to STBs include:

  • Enables a cellular network to be used for ordering or recovering orders for pay per view or other services when a land line is not present or not conveniently located near a STB.

  • Allows channel changes with the entertainment cabinet door closed, eliminating the need for line-of-sight IR technology.

  • Enables wireless headsets and wireless speakers.

  • Enables whole house remotes with two-way services


  • Enables sound, vibration and motion sensing controllers


  • Could be used in user-friendly remotes with displays

Broadcom's new Bluetooth and set-top box reference design is based on the company's high definition (HD) MPEG-4 reference platforms. It utilizes the BCM740x series of HD MPEG-4 devices in conjunction with Broadcom's BCM2046 Bluetooth solution. The BCM2046 is the industry's first solution to combine Bluetooth 2.1 features, enhanced data rate (EDR) technology and a Class 1 radio frequency transceiver in a single, monolithic chip.
