Wi-Fi Trends Take Center Stage in 2017

From an unprecedented DNS outage that temporarily paralyzed the entire internet, to the evolution of federated identity for simple, secure access to Wi-Fi and applications, 2016 had its mix of growing pains and innovative steps forward.

Here’s why 2017 will shape up into an interesting year for Wi-Fi technology.

IoT will create continued security issues on global networks

In 2017, the growth of IoT will put enormous pressure on Wi-Fi networks. While vendors must address the complexity of onboarding these devices onto their network, security can’t get left behind. The proliferation of IoT devices will propel high density into almost all locations – from coffee shops to living rooms – prompting more performance and security concerns. Whether Wi-Fi connected alarms or smart refrigerators, the security of our homes will be scrutinized and will become a key concern in 2017. Mass production of IoT devices will make them more susceptible to hacking, as they will not be equipped with the proper built in security.

The recent IoT-based attack on DNS provider Dyn opened the floodgates, as estimates show the IoT market reaching 10 billion devices by 2020. The event foreshadows the power hackers hold when invading these IoT systems. Taking down a significant portion of the internet grows more detrimental, yet all too plausible these days. Because of increased security concerns, vendors will equip devices with the ability to only connect to the IoT server over pre-designed ports and protocols. If IoT vendors don’t start putting security at the forefront of product development, we can only expect more large-scale cyberattacks in 2017.

LTE networks won’t impact Wi-Fi usage

Don’t expect LTE networks to replace Wi-Fi. The cost of deploying LTE networks is ten times greater and LTE is less adaptable for indoor environments than Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi will remain the lowest cost technology available with similar or superior performance to LTE when deployed properly and therefore will not be replaced by LTE. When people have access to Wi-Fi, they’ll connect. Data plan limitations remain too common.

Additionally, the FCC and other international government agencies began licensing the 5GHz spectrum to offer free and uncharted access to Wi-Fi. But, we don’t want carriers grabbing free spectrum and charging us for every byte we send, now do we?

LTE and Wi-Fi will co-exist as they do today, where LTE works well outdoors and Wi-Fi well-designed to work consistently throughout internal spaces.

The push toward federated identity will continue in 2017

Today, there remains a disparate number of Wi-Fi networks, all with different authentication requirements. This marks an opportunity for Wi-Fi vendors. In the coming year, we will see federated identity become a primary differentiator. By implementing federated identity, vendors simplify and secure the login process. Consumers can auto-connect to any public Wi-Fi network with their existing credentials – whether Google, Microsoft or Facebook – thus providing them with a seamless onboarding experience. It’s the next step for Single Sign-On (SSO), and one that will set Wi-Fi vendors apart in 2017.

This coming year, the repercussions of IoT, coexistence of LTE and Wi-Fi, and demand for simple, secure access to Wi-Fi, will take center stage. The onus falls on company leaders, who must adapt their business strategies so they can keep pace with the fast and ever-changing Wi-Fi landscape. 2017 will have plenty in store.

Xirrus Announces Cloud-Managed Wave 2 Portfolio

Xirrus announced new four-and eight-radio high density 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi access points (APs), which the company says can deliver up to eight times the Wave 2 capacity per AP compared to competitive solutions.

The new four radio XD4 and eight radio XR high density Wave 2 solutions were built specifically for enterprises, educational institutions and large public venues face. Key features:

  • Full spectrum of Wave 2 Wi-Fi features on four and eight Wave 2 radios per AP, each capable of up to 3.47 Gbps (3x faster than Wave 1) and four-stream multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) compared to three-stream MU-MIMO supported by other solutions
  • Enables migration to Wave 2 over time by working with existing and new Wi-Fi clients
  • Provides software-defined radios that empower one-click upgrades for migration to a 100 percent Wave 2 network at the most appropriate time
  • Cloud-based or on-premise Xirrus Management System (XMS) offer zero-touch software provisioning and EasyPass access control
  • Four and eight radio Xirrus high density APs reduce the quantity of APs required to deliver needed capacity. Integrated controllers in each AP eliminate cost and complexity that centralized controllers associated with competitive APs and significantly reduce overall network equipment and deployment cost.

Blueprint: The Path to an All-Wireless World

An all-wireless world is within our grasp. No matter where we go or what device we are on, connectivity is an expectation. Getting on a plane? No problem; Wi-Fi is accessible thousands of feet in the air. Taking a road trip across the U.S.? Pull off at a rest stop and watch Netflix from the passenger seat.

The advancements taking place in the Wi-Fi space are unprecedented and the future of connectivity remains an exciting one. With the surge in video streaming, gaming, IoT devices and bandwidth-consuming applications in general, our networks are being put to the test. The questions we continue to face are vast: Where will Wi-Fi be deployed in the coming years? How will Wi-Fi impact the use of cellular data? What can we expect in terms of evolution in the Wi-Fi spectrum and what challenges will we face? 2016 will see a shift toward an all-wireless world with connectivity moving beyond personal devices, even less cellular data usage, ease of use becoming more important for business users and consumers, and Wave 2 Wi-Fi gaining traction.

Connectivity moves far beyond personal devices

Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), in less than five years the number of connected devices is projected to top 25 billion. A movement that is beginning with connected homes, connected cars and sensors everywhere, will evolve to include more autonomous Wi-Fi devices – such as thermostats, lighting controls, security cameras and more – as opposed to personal Wi-Fi devices. The connected home will be a new selling point in real estate.

Voice – particularly Wi-Fi calling – and video will continue to be the largest drivers of traffic, but storage synchronization, and ultimately IoT traffic, will also start to give voice and video a run for their money in 2016.

Wi-Fi has surpassed cellular data and continues to grow

Wi-Fi will never replace cellular data – there will always be a mix of LAN and WAN networks. But Wi-Fi traffic has already surpassed cellular traffic, and this trend will only continue. No one wants to worry about data overages or poor connectivity. In the last several months we’ve seen big travel businesses like hotels, airlines and cruise ships announce free Wi-Fi for guests and travelers. Carriers charge us for every byte of data we send or receive from the Internet so we turn to Wi-Fi when it’s available. As Wi-Fi becomes accessible across even more locations and Wi-Fi calling continues to take hold, expect cellular data to fall further behind in 2016.

Ease of use will be one of the biggest challenges for Wi-Fi

Users expect Wi-Fi at any location. Onboarding these users, however, is not considered an easy feat. In 2016, ease of use will be the primary checklist item for both Wi-Fi vendors to provide and businesses to consume. College campuses, hotels and coffee shops are among the many locations that experience nomadic users connecting and disconnecting from the network regularly. Making a seamless, secure connection from anywhere a reality, without having to put thought into it, is the next major step for the Wi-Fi industry.

Wave 2 will become the norm in 2016

Expect to see 802.11ac Wave 2 become the norm for client devices and the infrastructure in 2016. More and more devices will be Wave 2 compatible and users will want to take advantage of the 5 GHz band to experience greater speed. Not far off, we also have 802.11ax and 60GHz technologies; so don’t expect the 802.11 standards to slow down for a long time.

Xirrus XD4 Packs 4 802.11ac Radios

Xirrus introduced its Xtreme Density (XD) Wi-Fi Access Points (APs) packing four 802.11ac radios for supporting IoT and other other high-density Wi-Fi environments.

The XD platform, paired with Xirrus’XMS cloud management system, automatically chooses the best available bands and power level without IT intervention and customizes client connectivity for the best performance based on the capability of each device. The Xirrus design integrates the controller function into every AP, reducing system costs and improving overall system reliability compared to centralized controllers.

In addition, the company announced today that it is shipping TurboXpress on all Xirrus XD access points. TurboXpress allows administrators to configure every radio on the AP for high-speed 802.11ac operation, providing an instant Wi-Fi performance boost of up to 6x.

“With different devices and applications competing for bandwidth on wireless networks, one AP is not enough to maintain acceptable performance,” says Bruce Miller, Vice President of product marketing. “XD solves this problem by integrating more 802.11ac radios per AP than any solution in the market, and eliminating the central controller from the network. Xirrus Launches Cloud-Managed Wall-Mounted Wi-Fi Access Point

Xirrus introduced a cloud-managed, wall-mounted 802.11ac Wi-Fi access point (AP) with integrated Gigabit Ethernet switch and designed for hospitality, education, healthcare, and any business requiring high speed Wi-Fi coupled with ease of deployment and management.

Xirrus said this product represents the lowest-cost enterprise-class 802.11ac AP available on the market.

“In hotels, a positive Wi-Fi experience weighs heavily on guest satisfaction scores,” said Bruce Miller, vice president of product marketing, Xirrus. “Providing high-quality Wi-Fi to hundreds of hotel rooms was once a time-intensive and expensive endeavor. Blueprint: Top Three 2015 Predictions for Wi-Fi Networks

Analysts predict that by 2018, there will be more than 10 billion mobile-ready devices and connections - about three billion more than now. Further 2018 predictions expect mobile IP traffic will reach an annual run rate of 190 exabytes, up from less than 18 exabytes in 2013. New and innovative Wi-Fi technology must be used to manage the massive increase in mobile data traffic.

Wireless technology enables businesses to interact with customers, partners and the entire supply chain from anywhere, anytime and on any device, ensuring business continues under even the most challenging circumstances. Further, those with Wi-Fi enabled devices expect connectivity and continuity when they visit a hotel, attend a sporting event or conference, on school campuses and even in retail outlets. As we enter 2015, IT networking professionals should consider the following when planning their Wi-Fi network infrastructure: future-proofing your Wi-Fi network, cloud-based services adoption, and migration to 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi.

No. 1 - Enterprises seek to future-proof their networks

Wireless technology and devices continue to evolve at a rapid pace (e.g., Wave 1 and Wave 2 802.11ac) in tandem with rapid growth in wireless network and mobile application usage. New Wi-Fi networking standards emerge every few years and constantly updating a wireless infrastructure strains the IT budget. A future-proof Wi-Fi network lowers the total cost of ownership by enabling technology upgrades without deploying new network infrastructure.

Previously, upgrading wireless infrastructure involved substantial planning and deployment resources and required a robust IT budget to purchase hundreds of replacement Access Points (APs). However, the ever-changing Wi-Fi standards landscape necessitates hardware and software upgradability within the network. Replacing older radios with 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi radios simplifies upgrades, as well as, lowers costs by eliminating new equipment needs and new cabling. As 802.11ac Wi-Fi enabled devices increase in the market place, networks will require upgrades to meet the demands of both devices and mobile applications.

No. 2 - Cloud-based services become a driver for better Wi-Fi

Cloud-based services have driven immense changes in enterprise IT everywhere. IT lacks visibility of and no longer controls all the applications running over their networks. These applications increasingly reach into the cloud for software updates, data backups, and SaaS usage resulting in congested networks, unpredictable usage patterns and security concerns about unknown data sources.

Network architects must alter Wi-Fi operations in order to ensure business-critical applications operate properly and maintain user experience. Wi-Fi solutions now require scalability and application control to manage the ever-changing requirements of the future.

No. 3 - 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi  takes off

Millions of new wireless devices are activated every day. For example, when iPhone 6 and 6 plus launched in October, 4 million people preordered and 10 million purchased the first weekend, and up to 100 million more were expected to ship in the first six months. The existing install base already exceeded more than half a billion of iOS devices. On average, each person carries 2.8 wireless devices. All businesses depend on Wi-Fi access for communications and business applications including ERP, CRM, business analytics and collaboration. At the same time, mobile devices bring an array of recreational and personal applications to these same networks.

The 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard delivers much faster performance than the 802.11n standard. 11ac offers higher bandwidth and. enables new applications that were previously impractical with Wi-Fi connections, including real-time access to business information and ability to transfer larger amounts of data.

2015 calls for network infrastructure updates to address the increase of new mobile devices and the applications they run. Network architects face the challenge of supporting a variety of new connections on their Wi-Fi networks as wearable tech and IoT become more popular and pervasive In addition to supporting traditional data and application traffic, the Wi-Fi network also needs to support different services today, such as voice, video and storage. Deploying a future-proof Wi-Fi network becomes necessary to upgrade as new wireless standards, such as 802.11ac Wave 2, emerge to support the tsunami of devices in the near future.
