Broadcom intros 3x3 Wi-Fi 6 chip

Broadcom began sampling a 3x3 Wi-Fi 6 chip designed for WLAN applications including Wi-Fi routers, residential gateways, wireless range extenders, and set-top boxes. The device is the first 3x3 Wi-Fi 6 solution supporting three transmit and three receive streams in 2.4-GHz, 5-GHz and future 6-GHz bands. With the 6-GHz Wi-Fi capability, the chip paves the way for high-bandwidth, low-latency applications, such as 4K UHD video streaming, real-time immersive gaming, and augmented reality (AR).

“A year ago Broadcom announced the production launch of BCM43684 – its flagship 4x4 Wi-Fi 6 radio for residential gateways and access points. Following that Broadcom has announced and delivered multiple SoCs with one or two 2x2 Wi-Fi 6 radios integrated,” said Greg Fischer, senior vice president and general manager of the Broadband Carrier Access Products Division at Broadcom. “With the addition of BCM6710 to the portfolio, Broadcom allows customers to build a diverse set of high-performance Wi-Fi 6 products, which are optimized for both cost and form factor.”

Skyworks supplies modules for leading Wi-Fi 6 vendors

Skyworks Solutions confirmed that its connectivity moduless are powering Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) devices from leading connected home and mesh network providers, including Arris, Asus, D-Link, Netgear, Ruckus and TP-Link. Specifically, Skyworks’ modules are being leveraged in all of the latest Wi-Fi 6 routers named in a recent CNET article.

According to ABI Research estimates, Wi-Fi 6 chipset shipments are expected to grow from approximately 127 million units in 2019 to close to 2 billion units by 2024, representing a compounded annual growth rate of approximately 73 percent.

Skyworks’ Wi-Fi 6 portfolio include:

  • 2.4 GHz high power WLAN power amplifier (PA)
  • 2.4 GHz receive front-end module (FEM) with integrated SPDT switch and low-noise amplifier (LNA)

Dell'Oro: WiFi 6 Adoption Boosts Sales of Aruba, Extreme, and Huawei

Mixed results characterized the 2Q 2019 Wireless LAN market, according to a recently published report by Dell’Oro Group that questions whether 2Q19 is the pause before the storm.

“Overall Wireless LAN market sales were soft, but not unusual compared to prior years. However, what caught our eye was the slowdown in overall unit shipments,” said Tam Dell’Oro, Founder and CEO at Dell’Oro Group. “The slowdown came from midrange and high-end across many manufacturers. In contrast, sales were robust growing well into the double-digits Y/Y at the lower-end price sensitive segment. WiFi 6 is picking up momentum as several additional vendors began shipping products during the quarter such as Cisco, Extreme Networks, and Fortinet. Select vendors with WiFi 6 already shipping enjoyed a surge in sales such as Aruba Networks, and Huawei,” added Dell’Oro.

Additional highlights from the Wireless LAN 2Q 2019 Quarterly Report:

  • Sales within China outpaced all other regions of the world.
  • Sales to the lower-Education vertical industry bounced back after declining for several quarters, while notable strength was observed in the government and manufacturing sectors.
  • NBASE-T ports rose sharply Q/Q, a trend we forecast to continue.

Wi-Fi 6 promises better network performance

The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) published a white paper that provides deployment guidelines for Wi-Fi 6 technology by network operators, enterprises and cities.

Globally, dependence upon Wi-Fi continues to grow exponentially, driven by a number of factors:

  • The number of Wi-Fi devices in the world – 9 billion – now outnumbers the 7.6 billion people on the planet.
  • Global enterprises this year will generate more than 33 billion exabytes of IP traffic. By 2022, that number will grow to more than 63 billion exabytes of IP traffic, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23 percent.
  • Wi-Fi is the primary access technology in most broadband households, with 76 percent of US households using Wi-Fi as the primary broadband connection.

The WBA expects that Wi-Fi 6 will mitigate some of the growing pains that Wi-Fi is experiencing, while ensuring that operators, enterprises and vendors meet important service-level agreements (SLAs). As such, the work released today proposes guidelines to ensure SLAs around bandwidth, throughput, latency, traffic prioritization and numerous other factors.

The paper also provides guidelines for RF planning and design, with consideration given to factors like band steering, MU-MIMO and adjusting for high-density deployments that demand increased capacity. Additionally, today’s release addresses ways that Wi-Fi 6 deployments can provide seamless mobility and backward compatibility with previous Wi-Fi generation technology.

Wi-Fi 6 benefits include higher data rates, increased network capacity, improved performance in congested environments, and improved power efficiency:

  • Uplink and downlink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA): increases network efficiency and lowers latency for high demand environments
  • Multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO): allows more data to be transferred at once and enables an access point to transmit to a larger number of concurrent clients at once
  • Transmit beamforming: enables higher data rates at a given range resulting in greater network capacity
  • 1024 quadrature amplitude modulation mode (1024-QAM): increases throughput in Wi-Fi devices by encoding more data in the same amount of spectrum
  • Target wake time (TWT): significantly improves battery life in Wi-Fi devices, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices

Cisco announces big push into Wi-Fi 6

Cisco is making a major push into Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with the launch of access points and core switches for building the next generation of campus networks.

Wi-Fi 6 delivers up to 400 percent greater capacity and is more effective in high-density settings like large lecture halls, stadiums and conference rooms. Latency is vastly improved, allowing for near real-time use cases. Wi-Fi 6 also promises lower power usage in end devices.



Cisco said Wi-Fi 6 offers many of the benefits of 5G for driving business transformation.

The rollout includes:
  • Wi-Fi 6 Access Points: New access points across the Catalyst and Meraki portfolios leverage custom, programmable chipsets. The new access points are also multilingual, with the ability to communicate with multiple IoT protocols, including BLE, Zigbee, and Thread.
  • Core Switch for the Campus Network: The Catalyst 9600 core switch family is built as the next evolution of the Catalyst 6000. 

    According to the datasheet, the Cisco Catalyst 9606R chassis is hardware ready to support a wired switching capacity of up to 25.6 Tbps, with up to 6.4 Tbps of bandwidth per slot. Cisco Catalyst 9600 Series switches support nonblocking 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable (QSFP+, QSFP28) and 1, 10, and 25 GE Small Form-Factor Pluggable Plus (SFP, SFP+, SFP28) The switches also support advanced routing and infrastructure services (such as MPLS Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPNs, Multicast VPN [MVPN], and Network Address Translation.

    The platform's ASIC is the first to support double-width HW tables.
  • New Developer Resources: Wi-Fi 6 and 5G represent an incredible opportunity for developers. To enable them to create the immersive experiences that these new levels of connectivity promise, Cisco is unveiling the DevNet Wireless Dev Center. DevNet, Cisco’s developer network, offers the learning labs, sandboxes and developer resources needed to create game-changing wireless applications. The Cisco Catalyst and Meraki access platforms are open and programmable all the way down to the chipset level, allowing applications to take advantage of network programmability in new and exciting ways.
  • New Ecosystem Partnerships: Prior to the launch of its Wi-Fi 6 access points, Cisco completed interoperability testing with Broadcom, Intel and Samsung to address the inevitable gaps that come with a new standard. Samsung, Boingo, GlobalReach Technology, Presidio and others are expected to join the Cisco OpenRoaming project to solve one of today’s biggest wireless pain points. The Cisco OpenRoaming project aims to make it easier to seamlessly and securely hop between Wi-Fi and LTE networks and onboard public Wi-Fi.
