Western Digital begins BiCS5 3D NAND production

Western Digital commenced initial production of its fifth-generation 3D NAND technology, BiCS5, in a 512-gigabit (Gb) chip.

BiCS5 is Western Digital’s highest density and most advanced 3D NAND technology to date. Second-generation multi-tier memory hole technology, improved engineering processes and other 3D NAND cell enhancements significantly increase cell array density horizontally across the wafer. These “lateral scaling” advancements in combination with 112 layers of vertical memory capability enables BiCS5 to offer up to 40 percent more bits of storage capacity per wafer compared to Western Digital’s 96-layer BiCS4 technology, while optimizing cost. New design enhancements also accelerate performance, enabling BiCS5 to offer up to 50 percent faster I/O performance compared to BiCS4.

Production of BiCS5 in meaningful commercial volumes is expected in the second half of calendar 2020.

Western Digital demonstrated an 8TB pocket-sized, portable SSD prototype featuring a SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps interface. The company is also releasing the 1TB SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe USB Type-C drive for smartphones and laptops.

Western Digital's CEO announces retirement

Steve Milligan, chief executive officer and a member of the Western Digital Board of Directors, announced plans to retire. A search is underway for a successor.

“On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Steve for his significant contributions and dedicated years of service to Western Digital,” said Matthew Massengill, chairman of the Board. “Since his appointment as CEO in 2013, Steve has led Western Digital’s transformation from a storage component provider to a diversified enabler of data infrastructure. ”

“Western Digital has significantly evolved since I first joined in 2002, and it has been an honor to lead this talented team through critical and transformative periods – not only for our company, but for the entire industry,” said Milligan. “We are currently at an inflection point in the semiconductor cycle and, as we prepare for a cyclical upturn, now is the right time to begin the transition to Western Digital’s next phase of leadership. Western Digital to exit storage systems business

Western Digital agreed to sell its IntelliFlash business to DDN, a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) and multi-cloud data management. Under the deal, DDN also will increase its purchase of Western Digital’s HDD and SSD storage devices.Financial terms were not disclosed.

Western Digital said the sale reflects its strategic intention to exit Storage Systems, which consists of its IntelliFlash and ActiveScale businesses. The company is exploring strategic options for ActiveScale. These actions will allow Western Digital to optimize its Data Center Systems portfolio around its core Storage Platforms business, which includes the OpenFlex™ platform and fabric-attached storage technologies.

“As we look to the future, scaling and accelerating growth opportunities for IntelliFlash and ActiveScale will require additional management focus and investment to ensure long-term success,” said Mike Cordano, president and chief operating officer. “By refocusing our Data Center Systems resources on our Storage Platforms business, we are confident that the Western Digital portfolio will be better positioned to capture significant opportunities ahead and drive long-term value creation.”

Zoned Storage Initiative aims for Zettabyte Scale data centers

A new Zoned Storage Initiative backed by Western Digital is aiming to achieve greater economies of scale for data center storage as we approach the zettabyte-scale era.

The Zoned Storage architecture enables applications, host and storage to orchestrate data placement and take full advantage of the highest available storage capacities typically with shingled magnetic recording (SMR) HDDs and the emerging zoned namespaces (ZNS) standard for NVMe SSDs to deliver better endurance and predictable, low-latency QoS performance. A planned extension of the NVMe standard, ZNS complements SMR technology, enabling developers to take advantage of both SMR and ZNS under a single storage stack, regardless of media type. With 50 percent of Western Digital’s HDD exabyte shipments expected to be on SMR by 2023, customers will be able to leverage their SMR application development to encompass high-capacity ZNS SSDs. Delivering intelligence to application architectures, SMR and ZNS will be key foundational building blocks of the new zettabyte-scale era now and into the future.

Western Digital is also announcing its ZNS development SSD for early Zoned Storage efforts. ZNS NVMe SSDs offer several benefits over traditional NVMe SSDs. Conforming to the ZNS feature set, as defined and governed by NVM Express, Inc., these ZNS SSDs are designed to lower write amplification, increase capacity, and provide improved throughput and latency. ZNS SSDs achieve these improvements by aligning “zones” to the internal physical properties of the SSDs, eliminating inefficiencies in the placement of data.

“If you think about the digital universe and how much content will be generated – from healthcare to autonomous cars to digital marketplaces and smart cities – we’re just scratching the surface of zettabyte-scale,” said Martin Fink, CTO, Western Digital. “With this data deluge, data centers architects can’t simply solve problems in the same way using general-purpose IT.
