Kioxia and WD introduce 6th gen, 162-layer Flash memory

Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory) and Western Digital announced their sixth-generation, 162-layer 3D flash memory technology, increasing the manufactured bits per wafer by 70 percent and I/O performance by 66%. 

Kioxia's sixth-generation 3D flash memory moves beyond conventional eight-stagger memory hole array and achieves up to 10 percent greater lateral cell array density compared to the fifth-generation technology. This lateral scaling advancement, in combination with 162 layers of stacked vertical memory, enables a 40 percent reduction in die size compared to the 112-layer stacking technology, optimizing cost.

The Kioxia and Western Digital teams also applied Circuit Under Array CMOS placement and four-plane operation, which together deliver nearly 2.4 times improvement in program performance and 10 percent improvement in read latency compared to the previous generation. I/O performance also improves by 66 percent, enabling the next-generation interface to support the ever-increasing need for faster transfer rates.

Western Digital unveils OpenFlex Data24 NVMe-oF Storage Platform

Western Digital unveiled its new OpenFlex Data24 NVMe-oF Storage Platform, a new shared storage JBOF (Just a Bunch of Flash) enclosure that extends the value of NVMe to multiple hosts over a low-latency Ethernet fabric network. The new enclosure leverages the company's new dual-port, performance Ultrastar DC SN840 NVMe SSDs and in-house RapidFlex NVMe-oF controllers.

The new OpenFlex Data24 holds up to 24 hot-swappable Ultrastar DC SN840 NVMe SSDs, providing up to 368TB in a compact 2U form factor. The newly branded RapidFlex RDMA-enabled NVMe-oF controllers allows up to six hosts to be directly attached with 100Gb Ethernet without the need for an external switch. RapidFlex controllers provide sub-500 nanosecond latency for projected platform performance topping 13M IOPS/70GB/s when adding up to six network adapters to the OpenFlex Data24.

David Goeckeler leaves Cisco to become CEO of WD

Western Digital appointed David Goeckeler as CEO, replacing Steve Milligan, who previously announced his intended retirement.

Goeckeler previously served as executive vice president and general manager of Cisco’s $34 billion Networking and Security Business.

Western Digital outlines OpenFlex architecture data center storage

Western Digital introduced its "OpenFlex" architecture for high-scale private and public cloud data centers.

WD's OpenFlex is a set of open standards, architecture and products that leverage industry-standard NVMf technology and the concept of software composable infrastructure (SCI). The idea is to create independently scalable pools of flash and disk that can be connected to computing resources via common networking technologies, such as Ethernet.

The elements of WD's vision include:

  • A "Kingfish" open API for orchestrating and managing SCI
  • Open product mechanical specifications to enable vendor neutral solutions
  • OpenFlex architecture and initial partner ecosystem
  • OpenFlex product line of flash and disk NVMe-over-Fabric (NVMf) devices

Western Digital backs RISC-V

Western Digital pledged its support for the RISC-V, an open and scalable compute architecture.

The company plans to transition future core, processor, and controller development to the RISC-V architecture.

Western Digital currently consumes over one billion processor cores on an annual basis across its product portfolio. The transition will occur gradually and once completely transitioned, Western Digital expects to be shipping two billion RISC-V cores annually. The company is committed to advancing RISC-V technology for use in mission-critical applications so that it can be deployed in its products.

Western Digital recently completed a strategic investment in Esperanto Technologies, a developer of high-performance, energy-efficient computing solutions based on the open RISC-V architecture. Esperanto, which is headquartered in Mountain View, California, includes a seasoned team of experienced processor and software engineers with the goal of making RISC-V the architecture of choice for compute-intensive applications, such as machine learning.

WD Acquires Tegile for Flash arrays

Western Digital agreed to acquire Tegile, which offers flash and persistent-memory storage solutions for enterprise data center applications. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Tegile, which is based in Newark, California, has been offering flash storage solutions since 2012. The company claims 1,700 customers.

“The Tegile acquisition will fit perfectly in Western Digital’s long-term strategy to deliver high value solutions that address customers’ rapidly evolving storage needs,” said Mike Cordano, president and chief operating officer of Western Digital. “The addition of Tegile’s technology and talented team will advance our goal of solving customers’ most significant challenges in capturing, preserving, transforming and accessing data. We welcome the Tegile team to Western Digital and look forward to working together to enhance our leadership position in enterprise and cloud-based storage.”

WD acquires Upthere app for consumer cloud storage

Western Digital has acquired Upthere, a start-up that offers an enhanced cloud storage experience for consumers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Upthere, which is based in Redwood City, California, offers an app that is "designed to be the single home for all of a user’s photos, videos, documents and music." The Upthere app is available for iPhone, iPad and Android devices, as well as macOS and Windows PCs.

WD said Upthere’s technology and team will augment itss Client Solutions business unit.

In addition, Western Digital announced that Barbara Nelson will lead its Cloud Services business. Ms. Nelson recently joined Western Digital from IronKey, a cloud security business where she was executive vice president and general manager.

Western Digital introduced its first client solid state drives built with its 64-layer 3D NAND technology.

“Delivering 64-layer 3D NAND-based SSDs into the PC segment marks a critical step in our ongoing conversion to this new technology, as well as offers long-term benefits for our customers,” said Mike Cordano, president and chief operating officer, Western Digital. “Between our two, strong brands in SanDisk and WD, and their respective loyal customer bases and distribution channels, these advanced SSDs will appeal to a very broad footprint of the computing population that are seeking the benefits of today’s newest technologies.”

The WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSDs boast an industry-leading 1.75M hours MTTF, as well as the quality backing of WD Functional Integrity Testing Lab (F.I.T. Lab™) certification.  The SanDisk Ultra 3D SSDs are ideal as a drop-in upgrade for existing systems.

The WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSDs will be available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities in both a traditional 2.5-inch/7mm cased drive as well as a single-sided M.2 2280 form factor. SanDisk Ultra 3D SSDs will be available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities in a traditional 2.5-inch/7mm cased drive form factor.

WD and Toshiba Produce First 512 Gigabit 64-Layer 3D NAND Chip

Western Digital Corp. announced pilot production of the first 512 Gigabit (Gb) three-bits-per-cell (X3) 64-layer 3D NAND (BICS3) chip in Yokkaichi, Japan, with mass production expected in the second half of 2017.

The company describes the first production as a significant achievement in a nearly three-decades-long legacy of flash memory innovations.

“The launch of the industry’s first 512Gb 64-layer 3D NAND chip is another important stride forward in the advancement of our 3D NAND technology, doubling the density from when we introduced the world’s first 64-layer architecture in July 2016,” said Dr. Siva Sivaram, executive vice president, memory technology, Western Digital. “This is a great addition to our rapidly broadening 3D NAND technology portfolio. It positions us well to continue addressing the increasing demand for storage due to rapid data growth across a wide range of customer retail, mobile and data center applications.”

The 512Gb 64-layer chip was developed jointly with the company’s technology and manufacturing partner Toshiba.

WD Debuts PCIe NVMe-based SSDs

Western Digital introduced a branded, performance PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe-based SSD that delivers more than three times the sequential read speeds of current SATA SSDs.

The WD Black PCIe SSDs will be available in 256GB and 512GB capacities in a single-sided M.2 2280 form factor. The WD Black PCIe SSD boasts up to 2050MB/s and 800MB/s sequential read and write speeds, making it ideal as a boot drive when paired with a high-capacity hard drive, or as primary storage when building a future-ready PC. The company said its new WD Black PCIe SSD delivers more than three times the sequential read performance of SATA SSDs, an industry-leading 1.75M hours MTTF, and WD Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T.) Lab certification.

SoftBank Adopts SanDisk's Multi-petabyte Flash Platform

SoftBank has adopted the SanDisk InfiniFlash all-flash storage platform for its software-defined storage solution.

Specifically, SoftBank has built a new software-defined, multi-petabyte in-house system using the SanDisk InfiniFlash platform as its core storage engine for real-time data transaction applications, enabling the installation of software in general-purpose servers. Previously, SoftBank was running an in-house traditional storage system combining hard disk drives (HDD) and solid state drives (SSD) for some of its applications.

SanDisk said its InfiniFlash platform offers up to 512TB of recording density in one 3-rack-unit (3U) platform.

Western Digital Achieves First 64 Layer 3D NAND

Western Digital has achieved pilot production of 3D NAND technology in 64 layers.

The technology, which WD is calling BiCS3, was developed jointly with Toshiba, its manufacturing partner. It will be initially deployed in 256 gigabit capacity and will be available in a range of capacities up to half a terabit on a single chip.

WD expects commercial volumes of BiCS3 in the first half of calendar 2017.

Toshiba and WD Inaugurate Flash Memory Fab in Japan

Toshiba and Western Digital celebrated the opening of the New Fab 2 semiconductor fabrication facility located in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, Japan.

The new facility will support the conversion of the companies’ 2D NAND capacity to 3D flash memory, allowing realization of solutions offering higher densities and better device performance. Construction began in September 2014.

Satoshi Tsunakawa, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation, said, “Advanced technologies underline our commitment to respond to continued demand as an innovator in flash memory. We are enhancing manufacturing efficiency and the quality of our world-class facility. Building on that, we also plan investments of as much as 860 billion yen by FY2018, in line with the market situation. SanDisk introduced two 256 gigabyte (GB) microSD cards -- a high-performance 256GB SanDisk Extreme microSDXC UHS-I card – the fastest microSD card in its class, and the 256GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card, Premium Edition, for mainstream consumers.

Western Digital Launches All-flash VMware Virtual SAN with HPE

Western Digital introduced a software-defined, all-flash storage solution featuring HPE ProLiant DL Rack Servers and VMware Virtual SAN™ running SQL Server 2016 workloads.

The virtualized storage and server infrastructure solution uses SanDisk’s enterprise-grade flash storage products and has demonstrated online transaction processing (OLTP) performance results of 2.4 million New Orders Per Minute (NOPM).

WD's New My Cloud Delivers Terabits of Personal Storage

WD introduced a new family of "My Cloud" personal cloud drives that provide consumers with multiple terabytes of digital content storage that is accessible to friends and family over the web and can be integrated with major public cloud services, including Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive.

WD is positioning its My Cloud as a solution for users to organize, centralize and secure the digital content from all of their computers and mobile devices.  The HDD, which is available in 2 TB, 3 TB, and 4 TB capacities, connects via USB 3.0 to serve as a digital hub for the home network.

"We believe that there's no place like home for the cloud," said Jim Welsh, executive vice president and general manager of WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups. "Everyone is inundated with thousands of digital files scattered across multiple computers and mobile devices, and controlling that chaos is a challenge. The average household will own approximately 3.3 terabytes (TB) of digital content by 2016, according to research from Gartner.  WD believes that automated software will be key to connecting, sharing, syncing, and backing-up digital content from all the smartphones, tablets and computers in the home.
