VIAVI and Capgemini collaborate on 5G and O-RAN validation

Viavi Solutions is working with Capgemini Engineering in Portugal to deliver a 5G and O-RAN lab test capability, powered by VIAVI's O-RAN Lab as a Service (LaaS).


The companies are collaborating to ensure successful network integration in 5G open environments. The VIAVI portfolio of test tools enables measurements for the entire network lifecycle, providing functional, system integration and performance testing of gNBs, core networks, core network components and O-RAN subsystems, delivering true end-user QoE visibility.

Viavi announces 800G QSFP-DD pluggable module test solution

Viavi Solutions announced support for QSFP-DD800 testing, accelerating the production of 800G network infrastructure. The VIAVI ONT XPM is the first lab validation system to offer support for both OSFP800 and QSFP-DD800 modules.

Viavi said its ONT XPM module is the industry's first fully-integrated test product for pluggable 800G transponders based on 100G electrical lane speed. The solution provides full coverage for both framed and unframed traffic generation and analysis. In addition to support for the Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable Double Density (QSFP-DD) 800G specification, the ONT XPM module also offers unique applications like TraCol, forward error correction (FEC) analysis and dynamic skew, specifically focused on the challenges of debugging the 100G PAM-4 electrical lanes used in 800G equipment and infrastructure.

VIAVI posts revenue of $310.9 million, up 16.6% yoy


VIAVI reported quarterly revenue of $310.9 million, up $44.3 million or 16.6% year-over-year. GAAP net loss was $(1.9) million, or $(0.01) per share. Non-GAAP net income was $52.8 million, or $0.22 per share.

"VIAVI had a strong finish to fiscal year 2021 with a record $1.20 billion in revenue and non-GAAP EPS at $0.83.  Fiscal Q4 posted record revenue and non-GAAP profitability for a June quarter as it exceeded the high end of the guidance range in revenue, non-GAAP operating margin and non-GAAP EPS," said Oleg Khaykin, VIAVI's President and Chief Executive Officer. "NSE's 13.5% year-on-year growth and record revenue was driven by the continued market rebound and strong demand for Fiber and Wireless products.  OSP revenue was in-line with our guidance, up 27.8% from a year ago levels reflecting continued strength in Anti-Counterfeiting."

Khaykin added, "We expect fiscal year 2022 to be a strong year for VIAVI with 5G deployment and Fiber network upgrades driving NSE revenues and OSP benefiting from the continued strong demand for Anti-Counterfeiting and 3D Sensing products. Overall, we expect fiscal year 2022 to achieve higher levels of revenue and non-GAAP profitability."

Viavi bids again for EXFO and Germain Lamonde rejects

Viavi Solutions announced a fourth, unsolicited bid to acquire EXFO, which is undertaking a Go Private transaction. Viavi's new offer raises the bid from US$7.50 to US$8.00 in cash per share. 

Viavi said its higher offer reflects EXFO's recently announced fiscal third quarter 2021 financial results in which bookings increased 47.2% year-on-year to US$87 million with a book-to-bill ratio at 1.20.  EXFO's business strength reflects both a macroeconomic recovery and secular industry growth demand driven by 5G wireless and fiber network deployment.  EXFO's strong results and future prospects further underpin the inadequate US$6.00 consideration of the Going Private Transaction.

Mr. Germain Lamonde, founder of EXFO, issued the following statement:


"Viavi Solutions Inc. (Viavi) made a fourth unsolicited, non-binding proposal to acquire EXFO Inc. (EXFO), and, for the fourth time, I make it crystal clear to Viavi and to my board of directors at EXFO that as controlling shareholder of EXFO, I would not consider any transaction with Viavi, or any other change of control transaction. Viavi knew full well I would reject any new non-binding, non-executable tentative proposal, which in my view is only intended to create distortion in the current go-private process and is simply aimed at eliminating Viavi’s main competitor – it is clearly not in the best interest of Viavi and EXFO customers as they would end up paying much higher prices for the products we sell, having less services and no longer benefit from EXFO’s incredible innovation engine."


EXFO acquires InOpticals for 400G/800G testing

EXFO completed its previously-announced acquisition of InOpticals Inc. of Taiwan. InOpticals' solutions will be integrated into EXFO's  test and measurement (T&M) product family. Viavi bids to acquire EXFO for US$7.50 per Share


Viavi Solutions announced a proposal to acquire EXFO at a price of US$7.50 in cash per share, representing an enterprise value of approximately US$430 million for EXFO. The offer represents a premium of 103% to the NASDAQ closing price on June 4, 2021, the trading day before the announcement of the going private transaction by EXFO's majority shareholder, Germain Lamonde; and 25% to the US$6.00 consideration offered under the Going Private Transaction.

Viavi cited clear strategic merits for combining VIAVI and EXFO to build the leader in communications test and measurement for the next decade. The strength of the combined teams and technology, combined with significantly greater scale and financial resources, would enable strong investment in growth while achieving greater operating leverage than either company could do alone. 


Viavi offers streamlined 5G Network Tester

Viavi Solutions introduced a streamlined version of its flagship TM500 Network Tester in use with virtually every wireless base station manufacturer around the globe. 

The new TMLite is an extension of the TM500, providing test capabilities trusted by leading manufacturers. It enables functional, system and performance testing for the latest 5G Standalone (SA) features, including FR1, FR2, FDD, TDD, and up to 4x4 MIMO, and delivers the RF, baseband and higher layer processing for one 5G NR carrier – on a single COTS server. Viavi enhances its Optical Network Monitoring

Viavi Solutions introduced multiple new capabilities for its Optical Network Monitoring Solutions (ONMS) family of remote test and monitoring solutions. 

Highlights:

  • A new, patented Flash Fiber Monitoring feature for ONMSi and SmartOTU software that enables operators to detect and locate a flash attenuation that causes network route flapping and burst network error conditions. Viavi says the feature is 100 to 300 times faster than traditional monitoring, with performance that can detect flash attenuation in an unprecedented one-tenth of a second. Network route flapping is one of the most common but damaging and difficult problems to diagnose.  Until now, operators had no way to detect or locate flash attenuation events that are a root cause of millions of communication errors globally every year.
  • New iOTDR Micro and Nano cards that enable NEMs to integrate optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) technology into their elements at a low price, with low power and a small footprint. The advanced software library for the cards provides operators with the industry’s most diverse range of uses cases via an element-integrated iOTDR solution, potentially saving NEM R&D teams 2–3-person years of development time. The cards support NEMs and their efforts for operators with an unmatched range of applications that include fiber characterization, fiber monitoring, tapping security intrusion detection, fault demarcation, Raman amplified link test, and tracking fiber degradation for preventative maintenance.
  • New fiber network analytics using the NITRO BI Fiber Insight Platform for ONMSi, automate fiber diagnostics to proactively eliminate risks and create a prioritized network performance improvement action plan. The fiber trends and aging use cases allow operators to see simplified reporting across the entire fiber network to revise procedures.  All fibers can be graded by the cable, customer, network location down to the root cause fault type – turning mountains of raw data into actionable insight.

Viavi introduces 800G FLEX XPM test module

Viavi Solutions announced the expansion of the VIAVI ONT solution portfolio with the 800G FLEX XPM Module  the first fully integrated test product for pluggable 800G transceivers that utilize 100G electrical lane speed, with integrated test applications. 

The company said its 800G FLEX XPM Module provides a wide range of critical test and measurement capabilities that manufacturers need to design and validate 800G optical modules based on 100G electrical signaling. The module has been designed for IC development and validation test, 800G transponder testing and vendor selection, system verification test, and manufacturing test. Key features include: support for 2x400GE, 8x100GE, 4x200GE and 1x800G unframed; dynamic skew; forward error correction (FEC) validation; and automation integration with the VIAVI ONT family.

Openreach employs Viavi's Optical Network Monitoring

Openreach is using the VIAVI Optical Network Monitoring System (ONMSi) to accelerate its Full Fibre broadband deployment across the U.K. 

The ONMSi platform is being used for validating new construction, performing preactivation checks, and monitoring ongoing service remotely. Full Fibre build monitoring processes are fully centralized and automated with Openreach OSS and Field App requirements.

Viavi relocates from California to Arizona

Viavi Solutions will relocate its corporate headquarters from San Jose, California to Chandler, Arizona.  The company will also establish a new manufacturing faclity in Chandler for its Optical Security and Performance Products (OSP) segment.

Viavi introduces test tool for last mile fiber deployment

Viavi Solutions introduced a new type of network test tool to speed and simplify last mile optical fiber activation and maintenance. 

The versatile VIAVI Optimeter combines the functionality of a broadband or GPON/XG(S)-PON power meter with fiber certification and connector inspection in a simple, all-in-one solution for effortless FTTx certification and troubleshooting — regardless of field technicians' experience level. The Optimeter was designed to reduce truck rolls and trouble tickets by proving successful fiber install passes, or providing clear fault ownership information to stop unnecessary handoffs.

"Pressure to meet demand for new PON/FTTH service often leads to minimal testing or even no testing. As a result, technicians are not able to complete install and activation on the first visit between 20 to 50% of the time, leading to poor customer experiences and lost revenue," said Kevin Oliver, Vice President and General Manager, Converged Instruments and Virtual Test, VIAVI. VIAVI validates the performance of Nokia's CFP2 modules

 Nokia has validated its coherent optical modules using the VIAVI Solutions' ONT 800G FLEX DCO Module, which tests pluggable (CFP2) Digital Coherent Optics (DCO) modules. Nokia utilized this test capability as a beta customer, providing valuable feedback, and ultimately purchased the first ONT 800G FLEX DCO Module upon release.

Nokia collaborated with VIAVI to test its CFP2 DCO module against the different technologies with the 800G FLEX DCO Module. In particular, Nokia sought a solution which had coherent interfaces on the optical as well as the electrical sides, a capability not available from other vendors.

VIAVI said the 800G FLEX DCO Module for its optical network test platform offers native support for both 400G class CFP2 DCO and QSFP-DD 400ZR modules. Electrical adapters allow testing on prototype boards and integrated circuits before module integration, greatly accelerating product development.

Hubei W-OLF Photoelectric licenses Viavi's optical filters

Hubei W-OLF Photoelectric Technology Co., which specializes in precision photoelectric film components, will use VIAVI's patent-protected low angle shift (LAS) filters in the field of three-dimensional (3D) sensing technology. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Viavi clocks revenue of $266.6 million, down 8% year-over-year

VIAVI reported revenue of $266.6 million for its fourth fiscal quarter, ended June 27, 2020. GAAP net income was $26.7 million, or $0.12 per share. Non-GAAP net income was $40.8 million, or $0.18 per share. This compares with net revenue of $256.2 million for the preceding quarter and revenue of $289.7 million for the same period last year.

"In fiscal fourth quarter our Wireless Lab equipment business delivered a record revenue quarter driven by 5G and we also saw overall NSE demand stabilizing," said Oleg Khaykin, VIAVI's President and Chief Executive Officer.  "For the full fiscal year 2020, revenue and non-GAAP EPS grew despite the business impact from the COVID-19 pandemic in the second half. Although near-term macroeconomic uncertainty is expected, we remain positive on the secular demand drivers for increased network capacity that drive 5G Wireless and Fiber and the continued penetration and adoption of 3D Sensing technology in mobile applications."

Americas, Asia-Pacific and EMEA customers represented 38.8%, 27.7% and 33.5%, respectively, of total net revenue for the quarter ended June 27, 2020. Americas, Asia-Pacific and EMEA customers represented 36.5%, 32.4% and 31.1%, respectively, of total net revenue for the year ended June 27, 2020.

VIAVI reports sales of $256 million, down 3% YoY

VIAVI reported net revenue of $256.2 million for its third fiscal quarter ended March 28, 2020, down $9.0 million or (3.4)% year-over-year. GAAP net loss was $(32.8) million, or $(0.14) per share. Non-GAAP net income was $32.0 million, or $0.14 per share.

"Fiscal Q3 2020 revenue came in below our guidance range. The emerging COVID-19 pandemic was the principal driver behind the revenue shortfall. Despite that, through disciplined OPEX management, we managed to deliver the midpoint of our non-GAAP EPS guidance range, at 14 cents per share," said Oleg Khaykin, VIAVI's President and Chief Executive Officer. "The NSE business segment was most impacted by the COVID-19 headwinds, as our customers increasingly went into WFH and lockdown mode of operations and many purchase decisions were either pushed out or put on hold. The OSP business segment, on another hand, saw some late quarter customer order upsides and expedites, coming in above the revenue and non-GAAP operating margin guidance range."

Americas, Asia-Pacific and EMEA customers represented 34.7%, 29.0% and 36.3%, respectively, of total net revenue for the quarter ended March 28, 2020.

VIAVI supplies 5G equipment validation for Samsung

Samsung Electronics has selected the VIAVI TM500 Network Tester and TeraVM 5G Core Emulator to validate 5G network equipment performance. The partnership marks the first wrap-around testing of 5G stand-alone (SA) base station equipment, and emulating real-world conditions enables end-to-end test of the radio access network (RAN), thereby ensuring performance and reliability in the field.

Viavi's TM500 is a scalable test system for validating network performance as experienced by end users. The solution is in use with almost every base station manufacturer in the industry. Recently released industry-first features include uplink MIMO on two layers; downlink 8CC CA; MIMO support; 4CC uplink and downlink carrier aggregation at 120 kHz and 240 kHz; millimeter wave support; and support for large numbers of UEs on 5G in both Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) modes. Viavi: Forty-two 5G network launches anticipated in 2019

Viavi Solutions estimates that there will be 55 commercial 5G networks in operation before the start of 2020.

A total of 13 commercial 5G networks were launched during 2018, including both mobile and fixed wireless deployments, and 42 more are expected to launch this calendar year. A large proportion of these deployments will be located in Europe and the Middle East (21 and 14, respectively), followed by 10 in Asia, 8 in the Americas and 2 in the Australasia region.

Viavi notes that at this time last year, only 28 service providers had reported that they were in field trials with 5G architecture. This rapid escalation of deployment plans comes in spite of the fact that 3GPP standards for 5G are not expected to be final until 2020.

"5G represents a paradigm shift in the way that networks are designed, deployed and managed, introducing inherent complexities in the architecture as well as exacting demands on performance and latency," said Sameh Yamany, Chief Technology Officer, VIAVI. Viavi Solutions introduced a significant enhancement of Network Performance Management and Diagnostics platform. Viavi's Observer GigaFlow stitches together user, network, and infrastructure data into a single record. This delivers high-fidelity forensic visibility into network conversations over time, as well as service path visibility for problem domain isolation across a complex hybrid IT environment.

VIAVI debuts large-scale 5G Base Station Analyzer

Viavi Solutions introduced its CellAdvisor 5G base station analyzer for use by mobile service providers globally for validating and troubleshooting 5G radio access.

The principal test functions of the CellAdvisor 5G include:

Real-time spectrum and interference analysis with persistence display for FR1 and FR2
5G carrier scanner measuring carrier power up to eight wide-band carriers’ power as well as strongest beam power level and its corresponding identifier (ID)
5G beam analyzer assessing individual beams’ IDs, their power levels and corresponding signal to noise ratios
5G route map for coverage verification mapping, in real-time, the physical cell identity (PCI) and its associated beam ID together with beam strength, as well as making coverage data available for post-processing.

Key features include: support for beamforming analysis, massive MIMO and carrier aggregation; spectrum and interference analysis in Frequency Region 1 (FR1, sub-6 GHz) and Frequency Region 2 (FR2, millimeter wave); flexibility to support wider channel bandwidth configurations (5 MHz to 100 MHz in FR1, and 100 MHz to 400 MHz in FR2); touchscreen functionality; and cloud-based asset and configuration management via the StrataSync platform.

Viavi supplies 5G test equipment to China Mobile

VIAVI Solutions is supplying 5G test and measurement solutions to China Mobile, which aims to introduce 5G service in China by the end of 2019. VIAVI said it is a preferred vendor of China Mobile, supporting their specific technologies and aggressive roadmap with advanced test solutions. These include Slicing Packet Network (SPN) with FlexE interface, the technology the carrier is positioning for 5G transport.

Viavi said CMCC has determined that Slicing Packet Network (SPN) is an optimal technology to support next-generation architecture, bandwidth, traffic model, network slicing, latency and time synchronization. Flexible Ethernet or FlexE is used in conjunction with SPN to create smaller Ethernet channels from a larger one, or vice versa, to guarantee quality of service (QoS) and isolation between slices at the transport layer. CMCC has requested that the ITU undertake standardization of SPN.
