VIAVI supplies 5G equipment validation for Samsung

Samsung Electronics has selected the VIAVI TM500 Network Tester and TeraVM 5G Core Emulator to validate 5G network equipment performance. The partnership marks the first wrap-around testing of 5G stand-alone (SA) base station equipment, and emulating real-world conditions enables end-to-end test of the radio access network (RAN), thereby ensuring performance and reliability in the field.

Viavi's TM500 is a scalable test system for validating network performance as experienced by end users. The solution is in use with almost every base station manufacturer in the industry. Recently released industry-first features include uplink MIMO on two layers; downlink 8CC CA; MIMO support; 4CC uplink and downlink carrier aggregation at 120 kHz and 240 kHz; millimeter wave support; and support for large numbers of UEs on 5G in both Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) modes. In addition to the industry-leading capabilities of the TM500 and TeraVM solutions, VIAVI is known for its long-standing reliability built from years of successful experience and knowledge, technology roadmap and robust local support.

Viavi: Forty-two 5G network launches anticipated in 2019

Viavi Solutions estimates that there will be 55 commercial 5G networks in operation before the start of 2020.

A total of 13 commercial 5G networks were launched during 2018, including both mobile and fixed wireless deployments, and 42 more are expected to launch this calendar year. A large proportion of these deployments will be located in Europe and the Middle East (21 and 14, respectively), followed by 10 in Asia, 8 in the Americas and 2 in the Australasia region.

Viavi notes that at this time last year, only 28 service providers had reported that they were in field trials with 5G architecture. This rapid escalation of deployment plans comes in spite of the fact that 3GPP standards for 5G are not expected to be final until 2020.

"5G represents a paradigm shift in the way that networks are designed, deployed and managed, introducing inherent complexities in the architecture as well as exacting demands on performance and latency," said Sameh Yamany, Chief Technology Officer, VIAVI. "The anticipated improvements that 5G offers will depend on precise operation of multiple elements throughout the network. Viavi enhances its Network Performance Management and Diagnostics

Viavi Solutions introduced a significant enhancement of Network Performance Management and Diagnostics platform. Viavi's Observer GigaFlow stitches together user, network, and infrastructure data into a single record. This delivers high-fidelity forensic visibility into network conversations over time, as well as service path visibility for problem domain isolation across a complex hybrid IT environment.

VIAVI debuts large-scale 5G Base Station Analyzer

Viavi Solutions introduced its CellAdvisor 5G base station analyzer for use by mobile service providers globally for validating and troubleshooting 5G radio access.

The principal test functions of the CellAdvisor 5G include:

Real-time spectrum and interference analysis with persistence display for FR1 and FR2
5G carrier scanner measuring carrier power up to eight wide-band carriers’ power as well as strongest beam power level and its corresponding identifier (ID)
5G beam analyzer assessing individual beams’ IDs, their power levels and corresponding signal to noise ratios
5G route map for coverage verification mapping, in real-time, the physical cell identity (PCI) and its associated beam ID together with beam strength, as well as making coverage data available for post-processing.

Key features include: support for beamforming analysis, massive MIMO and carrier aggregation; spectrum and interference analysis in Frequency Region 1 (FR1, sub-6 GHz) and Frequency Region 2 (FR2, millimeter wave); flexibility to support wider channel bandwidth configurations (5 MHz to 100 MHz in FR1, and 100 MHz to 400 MHz in FR2); touchscreen functionality; and cloud-based asset and configuration management via the StrataSync platform.

Viavi supplies 5G test equipment to China Mobile

VIAVI Solutions is supplying 5G test and measurement solutions to China Mobile, which aims to introduce 5G service in China by the end of 2019. VIAVI said it is a preferred vendor of China Mobile, supporting their specific technologies and aggressive roadmap with advanced test solutions. These include Slicing Packet Network (SPN) with FlexE interface, the technology the carrier is positioning for 5G transport.

Viavi said CMCC has determined that Slicing Packet Network (SPN) is an optimal technology to support next-generation architecture, bandwidth, traffic model, network slicing, latency and time synchronization. Flexible Ethernet or FlexE is used in conjunction with SPN to create smaller Ethernet channels from a larger one, or vice versa, to guarantee quality of service (QoS) and isolation between slices at the transport layer. CMCC has requested that the ITU undertake standardization of SPN. VIAVI is committing to support CMCC by delivering an SPN test platform, establishing a common foundation for network equipment manufacturers, chip developers and transceiver vendors to validate products based on this technology.

VIAVI to Acquire Cobham's wireless test and measurement businesses

Viavi Solutions agreed to acquire the Test and Measurement business of Cobham plc for $455 million in cash.

Viavi said the acquisition strengthens its competitive position in 5G deployment and diversifies the company into military, public safety and avionics test markets. 

Cobham AvComm and Wireless T&M provides testing solutions for communication service providers' networks from the radio access network through to the network core. It has also served military, public safety and aviation markets for decades with its trusted land-mobile radio and avionics test solutions. The business generated more than $200 million of revenues in calendar year 2017.

"This combination is another step in our NSE strategy of driving operational scale and monetizing our NOL assets," said Oleg Khaykin, President and CEO of VIAVI. "Cobham AvComm and Wireless T&M are recognized leaders with a world-class team that has a long track record of successfully bringing innovative solutions to market. Together, we expect new opportunities to grow through channel expansion and technology sharing as we address rapidly emerging opportunities in 5G, software-defined and virtualized test."

Viavi reports sales of $202 million, down 2.3% yoy

Viavi reported revenue of $201.8 million for the quarter ended 30-Dec-2017, a decline of 2.3% compared to a year earlier.  There was a net loss of $(3.7) million, or $(0.02) per share. Prior quarter GAAP net revenue was $195.2 million, with net loss of $(4.8) million or $(0.02) per share. GAAP net revenue for the second quarter of fiscal 2017 was $206.5 million, with net income of $49.2 million, or $0.21 per share.

Non-GAAP net revenue was $201.8 million, with net income of $20.2 million, or $0.09 per share.

"VIAVI's fiscal Q2 revenue, non-GAAP operating margin and non-GAAP EPS all came in above the high end of our guidance," said Oleg Khaykin, VIAVI's President and Chief Executive Officer.  "Strong service providers' end market demand drove year-on-year revenue increase in the NE segment and OSP's core business was stronger than expected."

Viavi enhances CellAdvisor base station analyser with NB-IoT testing capability

Viavi Solutions, a supplier of network and service enablement solutions and optical security and performance products, has announced its CellAdvisor Base Station Analyzer provides support for the signal analysis required for narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) connectivity.

The new test capability is designed to address the needs of service providers seeking to test the overlay IoT infrastructure that must co-exist with the traditional mobile communications network. Viavi is introducing the upgrade to the CellAdvisor following trials with Tier 1 global service providers and collaborations with network equipment manufacturers.

Viavi noted that the IoT will enable billions of smart devices to maintain low-speed and low-latency connectivity to mobile communications networks via narrowband signals. These networks will need to simultaneously support high-bandwidth applications such as video streaming using wideband signals, creating an inherent conflict between the two usage requirements. As a result network operators require solutions to help manage these disparate connection types.

To meet this need, Viavi has developed software-based NB-IoT testing that can be licensed on existing CellAdvisor handheld instruments, which are in use with major carriers worldwide. The new software feature enhances CellAdvisor solution, which supports RF over CPRI and BBU emulation, in addition to LTE testing and automated interference hunting to help improve operational efficiency.

With the new NB-IoT support, CellAdvisor measures the potential interference and performance impact the NB-IoT signal may have on the LTE wideband signal. It also verifies whether the signal has the reach and coverage required to serve the number of devices in the assigned geographic area, including accounting for criteria such as building penetration.

The capabilities of the CellAdvisor with NB-IoT support include analysis of signal power levels, digital demodulation and interference down to the single PRB (physical resource block) for the signal being measured. The measurements provide customers with in-depth data on how the network is operating in terms of performance, coverage and data traffic capacity, also identifying potential issues related to interference or intermodulation.

Viavi Ships 400G Testers

Viavi Solutions announced it has sold its ONT-600 400G tester to companies representing a significant cross-section of the high-speed optical networking ecosystem, including Japan's ORIX Rentec; a tier-1 U.S. carrier; two network equipment manufacturers, and chip and module vendors.

Viavi's ONT has the industry's first 400G support to include forward error correction (FEC) and PAM4 modulation. The solution can be used for design, development and validation of 400G technologies including CFP8 pluggable 400G optics.

Ixia and Viavi Debut 400GbE Test System with Forward Error Correction

Ixia is working with Viavi Solutions to showcase the world’s first public interoperability demonstration of a test system running bi-directional 400GbE line rate traffic with RS-544 Forward Error Correction (FEC), as currently defined in the IEEE 802.3bs draft standard.

The demo, which will be shown at next week's ECOC 2016 conference in Düsseldorf, Germany, will show full interoperability of independently developed MAC, PCS, and RS-544 FEC IP by each company, including the critical FEC element that enables 400GbE error-free data packets to be carried over fiber links, on readily available hardware components.

The companies said this demonstration is intended to show that it is now possible to successfully bring products to market that interoperate in accordance with emerging 400GbE standards and are ready for adoption by network equipment manufacturers as well as companies that need to move forward with their 400GbE implementation.

Ixia’s full portfolio of network infrastructure test systems, including the 400GbE test system, offer the same send/receive capabilities on all speed ports, with packet lengths as small as 49B, which is smaller than the minimum Ethernet frame size. It is also capable of sending and receiving a single 400GbE line rate flow at any packet size.

Viavi’s Optical Network Tester (ONT) has been proven in lab testing of 100G components, and now has the industry’s first 400G support to include FEC and PAM4 modulation. Pioneers of the high-speed network ecosystem now have a comprehensive, integrated platform for design, development, and validation of 400G technologies including CFP8 pluggable 400G optics.

Brocade-Viavi Partner on Mobile Analytics

Viavi Solutions and Brocade are rolling out a joint solution that enables mobile operators to capture and analyze subscriber data to quickly resolve quality of experience (QoE) issues.

Viavi’s xSIGHT Targeted Subscriber Search (TSS) leverages the Brocade Packet Broker and Brocade Session Director to filter and deliver targeted subscriber traffic so only the data required to resolve customer experience problems is forwarded to xSIGHT TSS. The joint solution is in production at a U.S. Tier-1 mobile operator.

The companies said this solution also enables mobile operators to open up opportunities for new value-added services.

“As mobile operators chart the course to 5G and re-architect their networks to software-based, virtualized, and open New IP architectures, their visibility and analytics infrastructure needs to follow suit,” said Kevin Shatzkamer, chief technology officer of mobile networking, Brocade. “With solutions from Brocade and Viavi, mobile subscribers can rest assured that networks are monitored, key performance indicators are measured, and service level agreements are provided to meet their growing need for reliable mobile communications. This allows operators to efficiently manage the consumption of Internet and video services as well as Internet of Things and machine-to-machine (M2M) connections.”

xSIGHT is Viavi’s customer experience assurance portfolio including an analytics platform fed by agents distributed throughout the network. The agents passively analyze traffic in real time, build network and application performance metrics and selectively store traffic for troubleshooting purposes. xSIGHT TSS is an agent which can be programmed to capture all control and user plane data for targeted subscribers defined by the service provider.

The Brocade Packet Broker helps to scale the capacity of the xSIGHT solution to thousands of dynamically targeted subscribers per TSS, with programmability of all dynamic rules and filters with less than 1 ms latency, a critical requirement for today’s mobile provider networks.

Viavi Appoints Oleg Khaykin as CEO

Viavi Solutions appointed Oleg Khaykin as its new President and CEO, replacing interim President and CEO Richard E. Belluzzo, who will continue his position as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Khaykin has also been appointed to the Company’s Board of Directors.

Prior to joining Viavi, Khaykin was a Senior Advisor with Silver Lake Partners.  Before that, he was President and CEO of International Rectifier from 2008 until its acquisition by Infineon AG in the January of 2015. He has also served as Chief Operating Officer of Amkor Technology and Vice President of Strategy & Business Development at Conexant Systems.  Earlier in his career he spent eight years with The Boston Consulting Group and prior to that, he was an engineer at Motorola.

Viavi Announces Leadership Change One Week After Launch

The Board of Directors of Viavi Solutions appointed Richard E. Belluzzo as interim president and chief executive officer, effective immediately. Belluzzo currently serves as Chairman.  Tom Waechter has stepped down as the company's president and chief executive officer and Board member. The Viavi Board is commencing a search for a permanent president and chief executive officer.

The announcement follows the separation of JDSU into two public companies on August 1, 2015 -- Viavi and Lumentum.

On behalf of Viavi’s Board, Mr. Belluzzo said, "We thank Tom for his contributions to the company since joining in 2007. He has led the company through a period of significant transformation, including the successful spin-off of Lumentum Holdings. As Viavi moves forward, we will seek a new leader with strong industry knowledge and customer relationships, technical expertise and operational acumen.”

Viavi Solutions Lauches Following the Split up of JDSU

JDSU completed the spinoff of its Communications and Commercial Optical Product business segment as Lumentum, and launched its new identity as Viavi Solutions.

Viavi will commence “regular-way” trading on the NASDAQ Stock Market on August 4, 2015 under the ticker symbol VIAV. The JDSU ticker symbol has been retired.

Viavi includes JDSU’s Network Enablement (“NE”), Service Enablement (“SE”) and Optical Security and Performance Products (“OSP”) businesses.

“This is an important milestone as we mark the successful completion of the spinoff,” said Tom Waechter, Viavi’s president and chief executive officer. “Viavi is poised to capture the opportunities created by the industry’s transition to new network architectures and the need for increased network and application visibility. We believe that the spinoff will improve Viavi’s agility and increase focus, allowing us to accelerate our progress and deliver for our customers and shareholders.”
