SiTime Introduces TempFlat Technology for MEMS Oscillators

SiTime introduced TempFlat MEMS technology -- an ability to eliminate temperature compensation in precision timing applications, resulting in higher performance, smaller size, lower power and cost.

TempFlat MEMS technology is being used in SiTime’s SiT15xx family of kHz oscillators for Smartphones.  The devices are currently available.

“In 2006, our semiconductor process enabled the first production MEMS oscillator. Since then, we have had many firsts – we introduced a MEMS TCXO, a MEMS oscillator with 500 femtoseconds of jitter, and a clock generator with integrated MEMS – all of which are used in consumer, industrial and cloud applications. Most recently, we entered the fast-growing smartphone market with our TempFlat MEMS-based 32 kHz oscillators,” said Rajesh Vashist, CEO of SiTime. “In 2011, SiTime demonstrated 100 PPB (parts per billion) stability with our high-performance temperature compensation. With TempFlat MEMS, which is 30 times better than SiTime’s prior resonators, we can get to 5 PPB oscillators for Stratum 3E timing in base stations, small cells and optical networking. SiTime is now uniquely able to service all segments of the electronics industry.”

SiTime Offers 32kHz MEMS Oscillator for Smartphone Market


SiTime introduced a family of 32 kHz MEMS oscillators designed to replace legacy quartz crystal resonators in mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, fitness monitoring and watch products, medical monitoring and wellness devices, etc.


As with the company's other MEMS timing solutions, the new SiT15xx family of oscillators compare favorably to existing quartz-based devices in several ways; SiTime’s MEMS are 85% smaller, use 50% less power, and significantly exceed the reliability metrics of quartz by 15 times.

The SiT153x family operates from a 1.2V to 3.63V regulated power supply, making them ideal for smartphones that use a coin-cell or super-cap battery backup. The SiT154x family also replaces quartz crystal resonators and operates from a 2.7 to 4.5V unregulated Li-Ion battery.

SiTime Adds +125C MEMS Oscillators High Reliability


SiTime introduced a MEMS oscillator offering a wide temperature range of-55°C to +125°C for industrial and high reliability applications.

Due to its unique silicon MEMS and analog architecture, the new SiT8920 outperforms quartz oscillators in every major performance category. It consumes half the power of quartz oscillators, is twice as stable, 20 times more reliable and 30 times more robust to shock and vibration.

SiTime also noted that its MEMS oscillators incorporate unique features that are  not available from quartz products, such as a unique "SoftEdgeT" rise/fall time control that reduces system EMI without additional components, expensive shielding or PCB re-design.

SiTime is also introducing two additional devices that are well suited for replacing quartz oscillators and crystal resonators.

SiT1618 – a fixed-frequency oscillator that operates over -40°C to +125°C

SiT8918 – a programmable oscillator that operates over the same temperature range and supports any frequency between 1 and 110 MHz as well as 1.8V and 2.5 to 3.3V operation

All three of the new MEMS oscillators are sampling now with mass production scheduled for April 2013.

SiTime Advances Network Timing with Digitally Controlled MEMS Oscillators

SiTime introduced a new MEMS-based Digitally Controlled Oscillator (DCXO) with an in-system digital control interface that is used for tuning the output frequency.

The company said its new device (SiT3907 DCXO), which is targeted at telecom, networking, video, audio and embedded applications, offers 100 times better linearity and 8 times better pull range than quartz VCXOs. The SiT3907 is fully programmable to accelerate development. Samples are shipped in 48 hours and production quantities are available with three weeks lead time.

“SiTime’s innovative MEMS technology and analog expertise is leading the revolution in the timing industry,” said Piyush Sevalia, executive vice president of marketing at SiTime. “For decades, the quartz industry has offered VCXOs with no new features. Our customers requested an all-digital control interface that simplified their design and improved performance. We listened, and used our semiconductor expertise to quickly deliver this new feature. This is a great example of how SiTime is changing the game in the timing industry.”

Some key features:
  • New - 1-wire digital interface for easy, low-noise, and dynamic in-system frequency control. Quartz VCXOs use an analog interface that requires an external DAC in the control path and generates additional system noise.
  • Best linearity at less than 0.1%. Typical quartz VCXOs are limited to 10% linearity.
  • Widest pull range from ±25 to ±1600 PPM with 1 PPB resolution for flexible, in-system calibration. Quartz VCXOs are limited to ±200 PPM pull range.
  • Programmable drive strength for best EMI reduction. This feature is not available in quartz VCXOs.
  • Industry-leading frequency stability as low as ± 10 PPM for enhanced system reliability. Typical quartz VCXOs are only available in ± 25 - 50 PPM stabilities.
  • LVCMOS output, programmable for any frequency between 1 and 220 MHz with best-in-class 6 decimal places of accuracy. Quartz VCXOs offer selected, fixed frequencies only.
  •  of customized devices are shipped in 48 hours and production quantities are available in 3 to 5 weeks. Customization of quartz VCXOs requires NREs and 12 to 18 week lead times.
  • Outstanding reliability of 500 million hours MTBF, which is up to 15 times better han quartz VCXOs.
  • 50,000 g shock and 70 g vibration resistance which is 30 times better than quartz VCXOs.
  • Industrial (-40 to +85 °C) and commercial temperature (-20 to +70 °C) operation.
  • 1.8V and 2.5 to 3.3V operation.
  • Available in 4-pin 3225 and 6-pin 5032 and 7050 packages.

SiTime Signs Investment and Sales Deal with Vectron & Knowles Electronics

SiTime, which offers MEMS-based silicon timing solutions that replace legacy quartz products, announced a strategic partnership with Vectron International and Knowles Electronics. The partnership brings a cash investment by Vectron and Knowles.

SiTime Hits MEMS Milestone: 100 Million Timing Devices Shipped

SiTime Corporation, which specializes in silicon MEMS timing solutions, announced a major milestone: cumulative shipments of its MEMS oscillators, clock generators and resonators have exceeded 100 million units.


Over 800 electronics companies have adopted SiTime’s Silicon MEMS timing solutions in more than 100 unique applications.
