Semtech expands 5G front haul portfolio with 50Gbps CDR

Semtech announced sampling of the newest member of its Tri-Edge CDR portfolio, the GN2256, an IC solution to enable 50Gbps PAM4 Fixed-WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing), Tunable WDM and Silicon Photonics optical modules.

The device integrates Semtech’s proven Tri-Edge CDR platform with a differential EML (Externally Modulated Laser) driver.

Semtech says the approach to expanding 5G wireless infrastructure bandwidth differs based on geographic region, deployment area considerations and carrier preferences. This often requires different types of optical modules in 5G wireless front haul links. In regions where it is typically difficult to install more fiber or reduce overhead costs, carriers utilize “colored” optical modules that send and receive multiple signals using differing wavelengths on a single fiber. These optical modules are also referred to as WDM optical modules and are critical for the 5G wireless infrastructure, especially for countries like Japan, Korea and the U.S. 

The GN2256 combines Semtech’s proprietary analog Tri-Edge technology with enhanced laser driver compensation to enable IEEE and Open Eye MSA compliant optical modules over industrial temperature ranges. Semtech’s Tri-Edge 5G platform addresses the full range of optical modules needed for all regions by enabling multiple types of SFP56 optical modules operating at 50Gbps PAM4.

Semtech samples CDR for 50 Gbps PAM4 front haul

Semtech is now sampling its new Tri-Edge CDR to emerging 50Gbps PAM4 5G front haul deployments. 

The new solution (GN2255), which is based on the company's existing Tri-Edge CDR platform qualified in data center applications, offers the small footprint, low power, ultra-low latency, and performance required by 5G front haul applications.

Semtech’s new integrated circuit (IC) enables 50Gbps PAM4 links that will double the bandwidth of currently deployed 25Gbps NRZ front haul links. The IC combines Semtech’s proprietary analog Tri-Edge technology with enhanced laser driver compensation to enable IEEE-compliant optical modules over industrial temperature ranges. 

The GN2255 Tri-Edge IC is the industry’s first analog IC solution enabling ultra-low latency, less than 1.5W module power and industry leading performance for up to 10km reach for 50Gbps PAM4 SFP56 optical modules. Semtech’s Tri-Edge technology and proprietary DML compensation will enable use of high volume, low cost 25Gbps bandwidth optics to operate at 50Gbps PAM4.

Amazon Sidewalk envisions a shared network for neighborhoods

 Amazon is advancing its plans for Sidewalk, a crowd-sourced network of consumer devices to be operated by Amazon at no charge to customers. The idea is to leverage the connectivity of devices throughout a neighborhood to help simplify new device setup, extend the low-bandwidth working range of devices, and help devices stay online even if they are outside the range of their home WiFi.

Amazon envisions that its network of Sidewalk-enabled devices could help its device users to find lost pets or valuables, to enable smart security and lighting, or to provide diagnostics for appliances and tools that lose their primary connectivity. Other applications for Sidewalk could include sensors for tracking packages, lost/stolen items, smart irrigation, etc 

The Amazon Sidewalk network will be enabled by customers with a Sidewalk Bridge, which is a capability that Amazon has already built into many existing Echo devices, Ring Floodlight Cams and Ring Spotlight Cams. The owners of these devices will be asked to contribute a small portion of their Internet bandwidth.  Amazon will then pool together this connectivity to create a shared network that benefits all Sidewalk-enabled devices in a community. Information traveling over the Sidewalk network will be encrypted. Amazon also promises to cap the maximum bandwidth used by a Sidewalk bridge owner.

Amazon Sidewalk uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the 900 MHz spectrum and other frequencies to extend coverage.

Semtech confirmed that it is working with Amazon to bring its long-range, low power LoRa platform to the Sidewalk network.

Amazon is also working with Nordic Semiconductor, Silicon Labs and Texas Instruments to enable chip sets that will power new devices.

Semtech samples 5G CDR with single-ended EML laser driver

 Semtech has begun sampling its new ClearEdge Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) IC, which integrates a single-ended EML laser driver optimized to enable the use of alternative optics for 5G. The company claims its platform offers the lowest power and smallest package size for SFP28 LAN-WDM (LWDM) optical modules.

Semtech’s ClearEdge (GN2154) IC enables industry-leading performance in LWDM modules with low cost EML lasers, while offering ultra-low power of 550mW typical (with 1.85VppSE driver swing) in a small 3.24mm x 2.05mm WLCSP package. 

Semtech’s ClearEdge CDR and FiberEdge PMD platform for 5G applications includes:

  • 25G SFP28 300m LR-lite, LR 10km, BiDi, CWDM, MWDM optical modules

Semtech releases PAM4 CDR Platform for 200G and 400G

Semtech announced production availability of its "Tri-Edge" CDR SR solutions to enable next-generation data center multi-mode interconnectivity. There are two new devices:

  • GN2558 is a quad PAM4 CDR with an integrated VCSEL driver
  • GN2559 is a quad PAM4 CDR with an integrated linear transimpedance amplifier (TIA).

The GN2558 CDR includes proprietary VCSEL compensation to enable a wide range of VCSEL options with fully adaptive input equalization and fast startup to streamline system bring up. The GN2559 linear TIA and CDR provides superior receiver performance with fast adaptation and startup. The GN2559 includes configurable output equalization enabling robust electrical interfaces.

“Semtech has successfully demonstrated the inter-working of its chipset solution on 400G ports for commercial Ethernet switches over 70m of OM3 fiber and 100m of OM4 fiber,” said Julius Yam, Senior Product Line Manager in Semtech’s Signal Integrity Products Group. “The GN2558 and GN2559 ICs provide the highly desired low power, low latency analog solution to meet the needs of high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI) and Cloud data center networks. Semtech debuts LoRa transceiver for Smart Home IoT sensors

Semtech introduced a transceiver designed for battery-powered LPWAN based smart home, community and consumer applications. The new Semtech LoRa Smart Home transceiver provides low power, broad coverage for indoor and neighborhood area IoT devices connecting to sensors and actuators for safety, environmental and convenience use cases. The company said its design will power sensors with multi-year operation. It features 600nA of sleep current and 4.6 mA of active receive current consumption.

Semtech enters production shipments of 5G front haul

Semtech announced volume shipments of ClearEdge CDR platform for 5G front haul.

Current 5G wireless deployments (phase 1) utilize 25 Gbps optical links in front haul supported by Semtech’s complete ClearEdge CDR platform.

Semtech says future deployments of 5G will utilize 50 Gbps PAM4 optical links starting in late 2020 enabled by Semtech’s Tri-Edge CDR portfolio.

Semtech designs indoor LoRa Corecell gateway

Semtech released its LoRa Corecell reference design for indoor gateway applications. The reference design is developed to the LoRaWAN protocol and targeted for home, building and factory automations.

Key features of the LoRa-based Gateway Baseband Transceiver (SX1302):

Semtech announces 56GB EML driver

Semtech announced its new FiberEdge linear electro-absorption modulated lasers (EML) driver suited for new PAM4-based Ethernet optical modules, including 100G-FR, 400G-DR4 and 400G-FR4.

Semtech's FiberEdge linear EML driver (GN1862) is a bare die single-ended driver specifically designed to provide the performance to power ratio required by hyperscale data center operators. The driver delivers two volts of single-ended swing while minimizing total harmonic distortion (THD) and group delay (GD) to increase module manufacturing yield, thereby driving down costs. As a bare die device, the new FiberEdge solution is ideal for both single channel (100G) and quad channel (400G) PAM4 applications.

“Over the past months, data center architects have discovered that the key to successful 100G per lambda deployments is performance,” said Dr. Timothy Vang, Vice President of Marketing and Applications for Semtech’s Signal Integrity Products Group. “The GN1862 EML driver delivers enough margin to specifications to enable modules with up to 40km reach.”

GN1862 is in pre-production with full production expected in December 2019.

Semtech debuts XGSPON chipset

Semtech announced production availability of itsGN7153B combo chip and GN7055B multi-rate burst mode transimpedance amplifier (TIA) for XGSPON Optical Line Terminals (OLTs).

Semtech's GN7153B is a combo chip supporting OLT transmit and receive signals in a fully integrated solution.

On the receive side, the GN7153B supports both XGPON (2.5G) and XGSPON (2.5G/10G) signals, while the transmit data path features Semtech’s 10G EML driver with ClearEdge CDR technology to effectively reset the signal jitter budget. Transmit path optimization can be accomplished through an I2C programmable PLL loop bandwidth control and a variety of jitter filter modes. The EML driver includes eye-shaping features and an Automatic Power Control (APC) loop to deliver best-in-class transmit eye quality. The burst mode receive data path includes a multi-rate 2.5G/10G limiting amplifier with a fast burst mode signal detect function, integrated discharge circuit and reset for short settling time.

Semtech said its high sensitivity burst mode TIA (GN7055B) is designed for XGSPON OLT applications. Using an external reset signal, the burst mode TIA meets the convergence time and burst dynamic range requirements of XGSPON 2.5G and 10G.The device features a fast Automatic Gain Control (AGC) loop to enable high dynamic range in burst mode applications. The GN7055B is offered in die form, supports industrial temperature range and uses a single 3.3V power supply.

Semtech expands its EPON portfolio

Semtech introduced a combo chip and a multi-rate burst mode Transimpedance Amplifier (TIA) for 10G EPON Optical Line Terminals (OLTs).

“The upsurge in the 10G EPON market is expected to continue and we believe these products will help drive this growth,” said Dr. Timothy Vang, Vice President of Marketing and Applications for Semtech’s Signal Integrity Products Group. “Our engineering team has produced another unique chipset that delivers higher performance and enables lower manufacturing costs through further integration.”

The combo chip is a fully bidirectional device that supports both 1G and 10G EPON. The transmit data path features Semtech’s 10G EML driver with ClearEdge CDR referenceless technology to effectively reset the path jitter budget. Tx path optimization can be accomplished via an I2C programmable PLL loop bandwidth control and a variety of jitter filter modes. The EML driver includes eye-shaping features and an automatic power control loop to deliver best-in-class transmit eye quality. The burst mode receive data path includes two separate limiting amplifiers, one for 1G EPON and the other for 10G EPON with a fast Burst Mode Signal Detect function. The Rx path outputs 10G data at CML levels, while the 1G Rx output is available at CML or LVPECL levels depending on the device version.

Semtech’s high sensitivity Burst Mode TIA is designed for 10G EPON OLT applications. The device features a fast automatic gain control loop to enable high dynamic range in burst mode applications. The GN7056 is offered in die form, supports industrial temperature range and uses a single 3.3V power supply.

ECOC 2018: Semtech exhibits CDR platform for 25G SFP28 SR modules and AOCs

At ECOC 2018, Semtech will highlight multiple products including its ClearEdge CDR platform for low-cost 25G SFP28 SR modules and Active Optical Cables.

Semtech will also feature its laser drivers, limiting amplifiers, ROSAs, signal conditioners, transceivers, and transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs).

Semtech supplies high-speed optical transceiver ICs and offers optical networking solutions that support multiple next-generation PAM4 and NRZ connectivity standards including Ethernet, PON, Optical Transport Network (OTN), Fibre Channel, and InfiniBand.

Semtech samples PAM4 clock and data recovery platform

Semtech announced sampling of its quad Tri-Edge clock and data recovery (CDR) with an integrated vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) driver and its quad Tri-Edge CDR with an integrated transimpedance amplifier (TIA).

The bundle is optimized for low power and low cost PAM4 short-reach, 200G/400G QSFP28 SR4/8 modules for data center and active optical cable (AOC) applications.

“With this Tri-Edge PAM4 CDR bundle, Semtech further demonstrates its innovative and disruptive solutions to alternatives available in the market today. We expect this to enable the next-gen deployment for data centers to allow higher bandwidth growth while supporting an aggressive cost structure,” said Dr. Timothy Vang, Vice President of Marketing and Applications for Semtech’s Signal Integrity Products Group.

Semtech also announced:
  • the full production of its ClearEdge CDR platform IC bundle targeting high-performance data center and wireless applications. The quad ClearEdge CDR with integrated DML laser driver and quad ClearEdge CDR with integrated transimpedance amplifier (TIA) provides an optimized chipset for 100G PSM4 and CWDM4 module solutions. The quad ClearEdge CDR with integrated DML laser driver also supports module designs based on both chip-on-board optics and passive TOSAs. 
  • initial production of its bi-directional ClearEdge CDR with integrated DML laser driver.
  • mass production of a fully integrated quad 28G ClearEdge CDR with single-ended electro-absorption modulated lasers (EML) laser driver, consuming only 790 mW at maximum, 1.5 Vppse swing, in a 6mm x 5mm package with integrated bias-T passive components. This addresses the challenge of shrinking real estate in QSFP28 designs.

Semtech announces PAM4 clock and data recovery platform

Semtech announced a PAM4 clock and data recovery (CDR) platform optimized for low power and low-cost PAM4 optical interconnects used in data center and active optical cable (AOC) applications.

Semtech's Tri-Edge is a new CDR platform technology being developed for the PAM4 communication protocol. It builds on the success of Semtech’s ClearEdge NRZ-based CDR platform technology and extends it to PAM4 signaling.

The company says its Tri-Edge CDR platform will be applicable for 100G, 200G and 400G requirements.

“The rapidly growing demand for bandwidth in the data center market requires a disruptive solution to meet the power, density and cost requirements. By combining leading-edge technologies with a focused application, we can enable a disruptive solution that we believe will meet the needs of the data centers in both the near-term and long-term,” said Imran Sherazi, Vice President of Marketing and Applications for Semtech’s Signal Integrity Products Group.

Semtech notes that its ClearEdge CDRs are the world’s most widely selected optical transceiver CDRs for use in 10G applications and 100G data center applications.

Semtech Releases Quad 25Gbps Chipset for 100G SR4

Semtech released a new chipset for quad channel 100G-SR4 optical interconnects operating at 25.78 Gbps.

The GN2108 is a quad channel CDR with integrated vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) drivers, and the GN2109 is a quad channel CDR with integrated transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs). A full suite of on-chip features minimizes external components and helps customers speed up their hardware and firmware development.

Semtech said its GN2108 VCSEL driver was architected to compensate for optical distortion introduced by VCSELs, enabling extended reach well beyond the SR4 standard to greater than 300m over OM4 fiber, operation with lower bandwidth and lower cost VCSELs, as well as operation with lower VCSEL bias settings for lower power and higher VCSEL reliability.
