SES continues to build its O3b MEO constellation

SES announced the successful launch of four more O3b Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites, bringing the number of O3b satellites to 20.

The launch was carried out by Arianespace from the Guiana Space Centre using the Soyuz rocket. The satellites were built by Thales Alenia Space.

The O3b MEO system is the only satellite-based system currently delivering fibre-like high-performance data connectivity services, MEF Carrier Ethernet certified services and certified Cloud connectivity services.

“This launch marks a very important part in the O3b journey. We started O3b with this bold vision of changing lives by connecting people. We wanted to create a meaningful impact, and we have. We have connected underserved communities with high-performance internet. We have restored connectivity across disaster zones. SES delivers connectivity for French Polynesian islands

SES Networks announced a deal with the Office des Postes et Telecommunications of French Polynesia (OPT) to deliver enhanced mobile broadband and Internet services to residents across the vast French Polynesian territory.

Under the new agreement, OPT will access the NSS-9 satellite’s wide C-band coverage to reach the sprawling Polynesian archipelago of 118 islands in the South Pacific.

OPT has been using SES satellite capacity to provide connectivity services since 2007.

“OPT and SES Networks have been partners for the last decade. It was thanks to SES satellites that we brought French Polynesia into the Internet age. Today, mobile broadband and Internet connectivity demands from residents and businesses are growing faster than ever. FCC authorizes O3b's fleet of Medium Earth Orbit Satellites

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) authorized SES to serve the U.S. market using a significantly expanded O3b fleet in the Medium Earth Orbit (MEO).

“This important FCC grant provides SES with the means to grow and scale our network, connecting the planet and delivering world-class solutions to our customers globally,” said Steve Collar, President and CEO of SES. “With the first 7 O3b mPOWER satellites, we will deliver a paradigm shift in performance, bandwidth and service. The FCC grant provides the platform to exponentially scale the network in response to surging demand for global data connectivity.”

Some highlights:

  • opens significant additional frequencies to SES for use in its non-geostationary (NGSO) constellation and 
  • enables SES to deploy O3b mPOWER satellites into inclined and equatorial orbits, delivering full global pole-to-pole coverage. 
  • a total of 26 new O3b satellites are authorized, in addition to the 16 satellites already operational and in orbit. 
  • allows SES to add 4 satellites to its existing O3b constellation, which are scheduled for launch next year
  • provides the framework for SES to triple its next-generation O3b mPOWER fleet by giving U.S. market access for another 22 super-powered satellites, of which 7 are currently under construction and scheduled for launch starting in 2021.

Satellite TV from SES now reaches 1 billion viewers worldwide

SES now reaches 351 million TV homes, according to the company's research. This means that SES is now delivering video content to more than 1 billion global viewers.

This compares with 325 million households at the end of 2016.

SES attributes its increased reach to the addition of new countries (Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda and Turkey) and the wider reach of Yahlive, namely in the Maghreb countries, together accounting for 17 million more SES TV homes. On a like-for-like basis, the technical reach grew by 9 million SES TV homes, mainly in Nigeria, Ghana and the Middle East.

Out of its 351 million TV homes, SES directly reaches 145 million, and indirectly serves another 147 million cable homes, 40 million IPTV homes, and 18 million terrestrial homes.

“The Satellite Monitor shows that our strategy to invest in growth markets is successful and results in a significantly larger geographical reach,” said Ferdinand Kayser, CEO of SES Video. “We continue to leverage our growing, unique technical reach worldwide to help our customers build their businesses and expand their audiences. A changing of the guard at SES

A changing of the guard is underway at SES, the global satellite communications company, with a new CEO and CFO expected to take up their posts in April. The new blood comes from O3b Networks, the visionary company whose name stood for the "other 3 billion" people on the planet who lacked access to the modern communications grid and who might be reached via a next-gen satellite constellation. The initial plan was for a network of 12 High Throughput Satellites (HTS) in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) around 8,000 kilometres from the Earth. Spotbeams from each of the satellites are capable of delivering up to 1.6 Gbps of throughput at a low latency of less than 150 milliseconds. Commercial operations began in September 2014. Early investors in O3b included SES, Google, Liberty Global, HSBC Principal Investments, Northbridge Venture Partners, Allen & Company, Development Bank of Southern Africa, Sofina, Satya Capital and Luxempart. Over time, SES increased its equity stake in the venture until eventually acquiring the whole firm in 2016. By this point, O3b's constellation was fully operational and the firm was getting recognized as the fastest growing satellite start-up.

Steve Collar, who previously was CEO of O3b has been appointed as the next President & CEO of SES, replacing Karim Michel Sabbagh who is stepping down in order to spend time with his family and to pursue new interests. Andrew Browne, who was until recently CFO of O3b Networks and CFO of SES between 2010 and 2013, has been appointed as the next CFO of SES.

Currently, four new O3b satellites have arrived safely at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana, in preparation for launch by a Soyuz vehicle in March 2018. The new satellites, which will be placed into orbit at a distance of 8,000km, will augment SES’s fleet of 12 O3b satellites.  As with the previous units, the new satellites were built by Thales Alenia Space. SES says a bigger constellation enables it to offer more capacity, enhanced coverage, increased efficiencies and greater reliability while delivering carrier-grade services including MEF Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certified services.

Later this week, SES is expected to release its 4Q 2107 financial results. Most of its revenue comes from long-term contracts in the satellite video distribution business, so major swings from quarter to quarter are unlikely. The company has made a much faster transition to full HD video, and now UHD 4K, than its competitor Eutelsat, although it faces the same long-term challenges as younger consumers turn to on-demand OTT video options rather than broadcast cable TV channels.

Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), which is based in Betzdorf, Luxembourg and is traded on the Euronext Paris exchange under the ticker symbol SESG, was founded in 1985 with the vision to use geostationary satellites for a pan-European TV broadcasting system.

SES currently has over 50 active GEO satellites, 12 active MEO satellites, and over 60 teleports worldwide that feed into its global terrestrial network. The combined footprint covers virtually the entire global population.

The SES business model is divided into four categories: Video, Fixed Data, Mobility, and Government services. All of these areas are growing, with Mobility being experiencing the strongest growth thanks to the installation of satellite broadband connections by many airlines worldwide.

Video remains key to SES and currently constitutes 68% of its overall sales. This has been the company's cash cow and is projected to remain so in the coming decade. SES says its distribution contracts typically run over 10 years. Current gen GEO satellites typically have 15-year lifespans. For the first nine months of 2017, SES Video generated revenue of EUR 1,031.5 billion, which was up by 1.1% over a year earlier, but down 3.3% on a like-for-like comparative basis. While revenue was sliding, at least usage was up – more households, more channels, more HD channels, more UHD. During the year, SES landed a multi-year renewal with Sky Deutschland covering seven transponders. It also signed a multi-year agreement with Viasat Ukraine to broadcast 40 pay-TV channels, including 13 HDTV channels.


Some highlights:

  • SES estimates that its satellites are delivering video to 325 million households, up 3% YoY.
  • In Europe, SES reaches 156 million households, up 2% YOY, including 30 million IPTV households
  • SES is carrying 7,743 broadcast TV channels globally, up 6% YOY. Of these, 2,601 are HDTV channels, representing an HD penetration rate of 34%, up 7% YOY. 
  • As of November 2017, SES was also carrying its first 24 UHD channels, including Fashion One, Sky and QVC.
  • SES' video feeds 44 million IPTV homes.
  • SES' video feeds over 120 video-on-demand systems
  • Regarding bandwidth intensive UHD, the company calculates that 30 UHD channels are bandwidth equivalent to 220 SD MPEG4 channels. 


Current profile of SES Networks (includes O3b)

SES Networks appears to be the stronger side of the house, at least financially in 2017, growing 12.7%.

The company suffered a scare in June 2017 when its AMC-9 satellite experienced an anomaly on-orbit when contact and control of the spacecraft were lost for multiple days. The AMERICOM-9 (AMC-9) satellite is a hybrid C/Ku-band design based on Alcatel's Spacebus 3000B3 platform. Its C-band payload features 24 - 36 MHz transponders, while the Ku-band payload features 24 - 36 MHz transponders. During the anomaly, SES was forced to transfer all customer traffic to other satellites. AMC-9 was launched in 2003, so its operational life was coming to an end. However, the event brought some economic pain and also reminded us of the vulnerabilities of operating complex electronic systems in the hostile environment of space.

One area to highlight is the strong performance of SES’ mobility business, especially Internet access for airlines and cruise ships.

Part of this is driven by SES-15, which was launched in May 2017 and just entered commercial service in January 2018. SES-15 is the first SES hybrid satellite. It equipped with 16 Ku-band transponders (36MHz equivalent) as well as a 10 GHz high throughput payload. The all-electric satellite operates at 129 degrees West, enabling it to serve North America, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. One of its big customers is Gogo, which now has over 400 aircraft equipped with its 2Ku in-flight connectivity technology. Gogo’s 2Ku uses two Ku-band antennas, one for download and the other for upload. The company claims that 2Ku offers peak speeds of 70 Mbps. More impressively, Gogo has a backlog of 1,600 more aircraft awaiting the installation of its antennas. The company also says that 2KU will be compatible with future MEO satellites. Airlines that have contracted for this service include AeroMexico, Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Air France, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta, GOL, Iberia, JAL, JTA, KLM, LATAM, United, Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin Australia.

A second SES hybrid satellite is expected to come online shortly, although this one has had a bumpy ride getting there. In January 2018, an Ariane 5 rocket launched from the Guiana Space Center (CSG) suffered an anomaly during the second stage separation process. Ground tracking stations lost telemetry contact with the rocket and its two satellite payloads shortly after the second stage separation. Hours later we learned that all was well, relatively speaking. he mission carried SES-14, the second of SES' hybrid satellite to be launched. SES-14 was equipped with C-band wide beams designed for in-flight connectivity across the Atlantic. This satellite now appears to be in proper orbit, so commercial services should commence after all testing and commissioning activities are complete. SES has other in-flight connectivity partners as well, including Panasonic and Global Eagle.

SES boosts Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) connectivity for Palau

Palau Telecoms will be extending and augmenting a contract with SES Networks for satellite broadband connectivity.

Since 2014, Palau Telecoms has been using SES' medium earth orbit (MEO) connectivity. The contract extension runs until 2020 and increases the amount of medium earth orbit (MEO) connectivity by 150%.

“Since we first initiated service with SES Networks, we have seen a tremendous uptick in demand for fast, reliable internet,” said Sam Masang, President of Palau Telecoms. “Now more than ever people expect to be able to access online services such as ecommerce sites and video calling applications at any time. We’ve been extremely impressed by the O3b fleet capabilities, and look forward to providing services for even more Palau residents in the coming years.”

Intelsat and SES agree on joint use of C-band by satellite and mobile operators

Intelsat and SES last week both agreed to back a proposal to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the seeks to protect satellite services in the 3700-4200 MHz C-band downlink spectrum while opening a specified portion of that spectrum for terrestrial mobile use.

The companies said their joint proposal sets a commercial and technical framework that would enable wireless operators to quickly access approximately 100 MHz of nationwide C-band downlink spectrum in the United States, speeding the deployment of next-generation 5G services. The idea builds on an innovative model first put forward to the FCC by Intelsat and Intel in October 2017 for spectrum sharing.

Under the proposal, a consortium of satellite operators would be created to oversee the governance of the initiative, define and implement the methodology for spectrum clearance, and serve as the sole interface for market-based transactions with parties interested in deploying terrestrial mobile services in specific portions of the C-band.

“The C-band is and remains a critical component of the U.S. network architecture. Space and ground segment operators have invested billions of dollars in U.S. C-band networks and connectivity and generate important value out of it. It is, therefore, our duty and mission to protect the C-band in the U.S. from any form of disruption and preserve its use,” stated Karim Michel Sabbagh, President and CEO of SES.

"Our proposed market-based solution provides a speedy resolution to the U.S. objective of accelerating deployment of 5G services. With Intelsat and SES now in agreement on major tenets of the framework and with the support of Intel, we are confident in our ability to implement this proposal quickly and efficiently, ultimately to the benefit of American consumers and the U.S. economy,” said Intelsat CEO Stephen Spengler.

SES preps four MEO satellites for March launch

SES confirmed that four new O3b satellites have arrived safely at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana, in preparation for launch by a Soyuz vehicle in March 2018.

The new satellites, which will be placed into orbit at a distance of 8,000km, will augment SES’s fleet of 12 O3b satellites.  The new satellites were built by Thales Alenia Space and will enable SES Networks to offer more capacity, enhanced coverage, increased efficiencies and greater reliability while delivering carrier-grade services including MEF Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certified services, to telcos, mobile network operators (MNOs), enterprises, internet service providers (ISPs) and government customers.

SES provides satellite connectivity for Loon balloons over P.R.

SES Networks confirmed that it is providing high throughput and fibre-like satellite connectivity service to Project Loon, the stratospheric balloons that are aiming to deliver 4G/LTE connectivity in disaster-affected Puerto Rico.

The connectivity is provided by SES Networks' O3b FastConnect, a rapidly deployable satellite terminal delivering fibre-like performance.

SES said this effort could not have happened with traditional satellites and could only happen with its fleet of MEO satellites because of its low latency, fiber-like capability.

“Our thoughts are with those whose lives have been impacted by this devastating hurricane," said Steve Collar, CEO of SES Networks. “Access to connectivity is crucial in getting those affected the information and help they need after a natural disaster. We are really pleased to be working with X and their other partners to deploy high-performance connectivity to Puerto Rico and to play a part in the island's restoration efforts.”

SpaceX Launches SES-10 and Retrieves Falcon 9 Rocket

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket successfully delivered the SES-10 communications satellite Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  The first stage of the rocket then successfully landed on a drone ship in the Atlantic.  The historic mission marked the first re-use of a rocket. Falcon 9’s first stage for the SES-10 mission previously supported the successful CRS-8 mission in April 2016.

SES-10, which was built by Airbus Defence and Space and is based on the Eurostar E3000 platform, features a Ku-band payload of 55 36MHz transponder equivalents, of which 27 are incremental. The satellite is wholly dedicated to providing service to Latin America, replacing capacity currently provided by other SES satellites at 67 degrees West, as well as bring additional capacity to Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The satellite will operate as the Andean Community’s Simón Bolivar 2 providing satellite capacity for each Andean Member State.

SES-15 Preps for Launch in Kourou

The SES-15 satellite has arrived at the European space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, in preparation for its launch by a Soyuz vehicle in April 2017.

SES-15, which was designed and manufactured by Boeing, carries a hybrid payload, with additional Ku-band wide beams and Ku- as well as Ka-band High Throughput Satellite (HTS) capability. The satellite will be equipped with an electric propulsion system for orbit-raising and in-orbit maneuvers. The satellite will also carry the Wide Area Augmentation Systems (WAAS), a US government-funded hosted payload to augment the Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

SES-15 is the first SES hybrid satellite to be launched and is equipped with 16 Ku-band transponders (36MHz equivalent) as well as a 10 GHz high throughput payload. The all-electric satellite will operate at the new orbital position of 129 degrees West and will serve North America, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

SES Posts 1H16 Revenue of EUR 956.8 million, down 4.2%

SES S.A. reported revenue of EUR 956.8 million, down 4.2% as reported (-4.8% at constant FX), for the first six months of 2016. EBITDA came in at EUR 699.8 million, down 5.4% as reported (-5.8% at constant FX and same scope).

“SES’s first half results were in line with management’s expectations, while the appeal of SES’s differentiated and holistic solutions to major customers has continued to deliver substantial contract backlog and validates SES’s capability-driven strategy," stated Karim Michel Sabbagh, President and CEO.

A few operational highlights from the financial statement:


  • HDTV channels up 12.1% (YOY) to 2,442 channels, improving HD penetration from 30.4% to 32.7%
  • Of the 7,463 total TV channels broadcast by SES’s global fleet (30 June 2015: 7,164), 32.7% are broadcast in HD (30 June 2015: 30.4%). This represents a growth in HDTV channels of 12.1% (YOY) to 2,442 HDTV channels. 
  • At 30 June 2016, 60% of SES’s total TV channels are broadcast in MPEG-4 (30 June 2015: 54%).
  • At 30 June 2016, SES now broadcasts 16 commercial UHD TV channels (30 June 2015: none), including all regional variations. In January 2016, SES and Vivicast Media unveiled UHD-1 for audiences of North American cable operators and telcos. Then, in May 2016, SES announced an agreement for the world’s first Ultra HD sports channel, Viasat Ultra HD. 
  • SES now supports a total of 57 global government customers. In January 2016, SES secured a new contract with the Kativik Regional Government, in Canada, to provide satellite services across the northern Quebec region. The contract, which began on 30 June 2016, includes 12 transponders on SES-2 to deliver critical C-band communications capabilities. The service will triple the bandwidth currently available across the region.
  • As at 30 June 2016, the SES fleet had 1,550 available transponders (30 June 2015: 1,518 available transponders). The movement in available capacity includes the entry in commercial service of SES-9 (+53 incremental transponders) on 1 June 2016. This was partly offset by the ARSAT migration (-16 transponders) and reduction in available capacity on NSS-6 (-5 transponders) as a result of power degradation.

SES to Acquire 100% of O3b

SES exercised its call option and offered to acquire the remaining shares and warrants of O3b Networks, bringing its ownership stake from 49% to 100%.


Specifically, SES will pay US$730 million to directly increase its fully diluted ownership of O3b from 49.1% to 100%, using proceeds from the company’s recent equity raising. On completion, SES will consolidate USD$1.2 billion of O3b net debt and will, following completion, refinance a significant proportion of the most expensive debt facilities, using the proceeds secured by the recent hybrid bond issuance and the remaining proceeds from the equity raising. This will significantly reduce O3b average cost of debt of 9.5%, noting that SES's current average cost of financing is approximately 4%.

SES said O3b’s unique and global high throughput, low latency solution expands its own global reach and satellite-enabled solutions.

Karim Michel Sabbagh, President and CEO of SES, commented: “Moving to 100% of O3b will be highly accretive for SES, both from a strategic and economic standpoint. In addition to exceeding SES’s investment hurdle rates, full consolidation accelerates the delivery of important transformational and combinational synergies that are only possible with 100% ownership.”

O3b Networks operates a constellation of 12 High Throughput Satellites (HTS) in a Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) around 8,000 kilometres from the Earth. The company offers customers a ‘fibre in the sky’ solution, with each of the constellation’s beams capable of delivering up to 1.6 Gbps of throughput at a low latency of less than 150 milliseconds, a significant improvement over geostationary connectivity. O3b has procured an additional eight satellites to accommodate rapidly-expanding demand, with four satellites expected to be launched during H1 2018, and the remaining four satellites expected to be launched in H2 2019. These procurements will increase the size of the current fleet from 12 to 20 satellites (including three satellites currently flying as in-orbit back-up). At ‘steady-state’ utilisation, which is targeted to be achieved by the end of the third year of a satellite’s commercial service, the full operational constellation is expected to generate annualised revenue of between US$32 million and US$36 million per satellite.

O3B Lands $460 Million to Expand Global Satellite Constellation

O3b Networks closed $460 million in incremental financing to support its next-generation satellite network.  The company plans to use the money to expand the total number of satellites in its constellation from twelve to twenty.

O3b began full commercial operations in September 2014. The company said it now supports connectivity for more than 40 customers worldwide, with more than 50% of those customers having already upgraded their service commitments to O3b during the first year of commercial operation.

SpaceX successfully launched the SES-9 satellite using a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

SES-9 is SES’s largest satellite to serve the Asia-Pacific region. It weighed 5.3 tonnes at the launch and has 57 high-power Ku-band transponders – equivalent to 81x36 MHz transponders’ It thus provides significant expansion capacity to serve the buoyant and fast-growing video, enterprise, mobility and government sectors across Northeast Asia, South Asia, India, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Boeing was lead contractor.

In addition, SES-9 is equipped with dedicated mobility beams to provide maritime coverage vessels on high-traffic maritime routes between the Suez Canal and Strait of Malacca.

The Falcon 9 rocket attempted to land on a drone ship in the Atlantic, but missed narrowly.

The deal will enable Gogo to address the growing demand for high-speed inflight connectivity on travel routes over North America, including Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico and Canada, as well as Central America and the Caribbean. Gogo will also have access to HTS capacity on an additional satellite, SES-12, which is set to be launched in 2017 with high-powered spot beam and wide beam coverage over Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Russia.

PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Signs on For SES-9 Satellite

PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Telkom), Indonesia’s largest satellite telecommunications services, has contracted capacity on SES' recently-launched SES-9 satellite.

As part of the agreement, SES and Telkom will co-market SES-9 capacity over Indonesia, allowing customers from across all market verticals, including video, cellular, broadband, maritime andaeronautical, to utilise satellite capacity within the country. SES-9 will be co-located with SES-7, operating in the arc around 108.2 degrees East, and has a dedicated beam that comprehensively covers the Indonesian archipelago. Scheduled to enter service mid-2016, SES-9 will deliver high-powered capacity that meets the rising demands for connectivity across Indonesia.

SES Takes Majority Stake in O3b Networks

SES will increasing its stake in O3b Networks (O3b) from 49.1% to 50.5%, giving it majority control, for a payment of US$20 million.  This brings its aggregate equity investment in O3b to date to US$323 million (EUR 257 million). On completion, SES will consolidate O3b’s net debt, which is currently USD 1.2 billion. In addition, the Board of O3b Networks has agreed to evaluate an Initial Public Offering (IPO) process for the remaining 49.5% of O3b shares following receipt of the requisite regulatory approvals, and subsequent completion of SES’s increase in ownership to 50.5%.

O3b Networks operates a constellation of 12 High Throughput Satellites (HTS) in a Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) around 8,000 kilometres from the Earth. The company offers customers a ‘fibre in the sky’ solution, with each of the constellation’s beams capable of delivering up to 1.6 Gbps of throughput at a low latency of less than 150 milliseconds, a significant improvement over geostationary connectivity.

O3b claims to be the fastest growing satellite network in history in terms of capacity contracted. Since beginning commercial operations in September 2014, the company has added over 40 Enterprise, Mobility and Government clients across 31 countries. To date, over 50% of customers have already upgraded their initial service commitments, demonstrating the attraction of O3b’s unique and ‘game-changing’ solution. Consequently, O3b has a fully protected contract backlog of US$350 million. O3b’s global customer base includes Digicel Pacific, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, American Samoa Telecom, Speedcast, Rignet, Bharti International (Airtel), Timor Telecom, CNT Ecuador, Entel Chile and (via SES Government Solutions) the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

O3b has procured an additional eight satellites to accommodate rapidly-expanding demand, with four satellites expected to be launched during H1 2018, and the remaining four satellites expected to be launched in H2 2019. These procurements will increase the size of the current fleet from 12 to 20 satellites (including three satellites currently flying as in-orbit back-up). At ‘steady-state’ utilisation, which is targeted to be achieved by the end of the third year of a satellite’s commercial service, the full operational constellation is expected to generate annualised revenue of between US$32 million and US$36 million per satellite.

SES said the consolidation enables it to extend its global reach and satellite-enabled solutions.

German Broadcaster Picks SES Platform

TELE 5, a leading commercial broadcaster in Germnay, has renewed a multi-year contract with SES Platform Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SES.

Under the deal, SES Platform Services, a global service provider for the distribution of video content, will be providing services to TELE 5 which include editing and distributing video and metadata (such as information about license periods, pictures, trailers and brief descriptions) – from live broadcasting to video-on-demand.

TELE 5’s inventory of over 8,000 hours of HD video material and over 2,000 assets – from feature films to magazine formats and original reporting – is stored in Fluid MAM (Media Asset Management), a Web-based media management application developed by SES Platform Services and based on secure cloud technology. It enables companies to digitally manage their video and metadata easily and conveniently, before efficiently delivering the content to internet or VOD platforms.

TELE 5 will use Fluid MAM to deliver more than 1,200 hours of VOD content annually. The flexible playout system Fluid PLAY guarantees high audiovisual quality and allows for sophisticated video effects and special forms of advertising.

SES Readies Next Satellite Launch

Eleven days after the successful launch of the SES-6 satellite on board an ILS Proton booster, the company's next satellite has safely arrived at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in anticipation of a July 21 launch.

ASTRA 2E, which was built for SES by Astrium of France, uses the Eurostar E3000 platform and carriers 60 Ku-band transponders, as well as 3 wideband Ka-band transponders. It will enable the delivery of next generation broadcast and broadband services in Europe, the Middle East and Africa at the neighborhood of 28.2° East.

ASTRA 2E will be the seventh Eurostar satellite in the SES fleet, following the successful launch of SES-6 in June 2013 and ASTRA 2F in September 2012.
