Rubrik adds $261 million in funding for cloud data management

Rubrik, a start-up based in Palo Alto, California, closed $261 million in new venture funding for its Cloud Data Management platform, which delivers data protection, search and analytics, archiving and compliance, and copy data management capabilities for hybrid cloud enterprises. This gives the company total venture backing of over $553 million and a valuation of $3.3 billion. The new funding came from new investor Bain Capital Ventures, and with strong participation from existing investors Lightspeed Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, and IVP.

Rubrik now has over 1,400 employees and is delivering global 24×365 support with three locations in the US, plus locations in Ireland, the Netherlands, India, and Tokyo.

  • Instant Access – Rubrik delivers instant application recovery and predictive global search by unifying data locked within disparate application silos into one globally indexed namespace while leveraging zero-data cloning technology to enable on-demand copy data workflows.        
  • Automated Orchestration – Rubrik nearly eliminates daily operational management by enabling a single policy engine to orchestrate service level agreements across the entire data lifecycle. The Rubrik programmatic interface automates how data services are created, consumed, and retired across clouds.
  • Security and Compliance – Rubrik secures data whether in-flight or at-rest throughout its lifecycle, regardless of location. The Rubrik platform delivers granular user provisioning and data permissions across all cloud data management workflows while providing automated compliance reporting to successfully complete various industry and internal audits.

  • In 2018, Rubrik welcomed Microsoft Chairman John W. Thompson and Chairman Emeritus and former CEO of Cisco John Chambers as a board member and a board advisor, respectively. The company also expanded its executive team with several high profile hires from leading technology companies, including: Chief Financial Officer Murray Demo (Atlassian), CIO Avon Puri (VMware), Chief Legal Officer Peter McGoff (Box), Chief People Officer Jeff Vijungco (Adobe), SVP of Product & Strategy Shay Mowlem (Splunk), and SVP of Finance & Strategy Kiran Choudary (Atlassian).

Rubrik to acquire Datos IO

Rubrik, agreed to acquire Datos IO, a market leader in backup and recovery for NoSQL databases and big data file systems. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The acquisition of Datos IO will extend Rubrik’s reach into mission-critical cloud applications and databases increasingly adopted by application and DevOps teams at Fortune 500 companies.

The companies said they share a common vision for building a control plane that can automate, orchestrate, and secure data in the cloud.

Datos IO’s flagship platform RecoverX pioneers a radically new approach to comprehensive data management for modern cloud applications built on modern NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra, Couchbase, Amazon DynamoDB) and big data file systems (Cloudera, Hortonworks). Datos IO has filed 22 patents in application-aware data management for enterprise use cases of backup and recovery, test/dev refresh, in-place analytics, and cloud mobility. Fortune 100 companies have chosen Datos IO to protect and manage their cloud applications enabling digital transformation, including three of the top Fortune 15 companies and the world’s largest home improvement retailer.

The company said it is on an annual run rate approaching $100 million.

The latest investment round was led by IVP with strong participation from Lightspeed Venture Partners and Greylock Partners, bringing total equity raised to $292 million.

Rubik Launches Cloud Data Management Platform v3.0, Raises $61 Million

The $61 million Series C funding round was led by Khosla Ventures with heavy participation from existing investors Lightspeed Venture Partners, Greylock Partners and angel investors. The company has raised $112 million to date.

  • Rubrik is headed by Bipul Sinha, who previously was a partner at Lightspeed, where he invested in Nutanix (founding investor and board member), PernixData, and Numerify.) Its founders also include Arvind Jain, previously a Distinguished Engineer at Google where he started/managed the Google Fiber, MapMaker and YouTube and Search infrastructure teams; Soham Mazumdar, who was the co-founder and CTO at Tagtile, a mobile loyalty company (acquired by Facebook) and who co-founded Teragoogle, a complete re-architecture of Google's Search Infrastructure, for which he was awarded the Google Founder's Award; and Arvind Nithrakashyap, who led the real-time ad infrastructure team at Rocketfuel and previously co-founded the Exadata storage platform at Oracle.
