EllaLink's transatlantic cable to deploy acoustic sensor tech

EllaLink, which is building a four-pair subsea cable between Portugal and Brazil, will deploy smart sensor on its cable to provide the scientific community with real-time, accurate and relevant data on seabed conditions. This will make EllaLink the first commercial subsea telecom cable system to integrate SMART cable concepts.

The EllaLink GeoLab infrastructure, which will be provided by EllaLink in cooperation with EMACOM, will leverage distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology in the Madeira branch of the subsea cable system. It will collect data along the route which will be optically transmitted back to the shore, independently and without impacting either telecoms traffic or the design life of the cable.

EllaLink is collaborating with GÉANT and the Portuguese NREN, FCT, both members of the BELLA Consortium, who will use EllaLink cable to support R&E collaborations between Europe and Latin America.

New Atlantic Data Center Hub planned in Portugal

The EllaLink Group and aicep Global Parques – Gestão de Áreas Empresariais e Serviços, unveiled plans for a new "Sines Tech – Innovation & Data Center Hub" in Portugal.

The new campus is to be built in the Portuguese port city of Sines, in proximity to the landing station for the new Ellalink subsea cable to Latin America.

Diego Matas, Chief Operating Officer of EllaLink, added “I am delighted to announce our collaboration with Global Parks in promoting Sines as a new Atlantic hub addressing the demand for diverse data center connectivity and an alternative cable landing site in Portugal. EllaLink evaluated multiple landing locations during the project development phase and Sines was the optimum fit. Sines Tech will provide an environmentally friendly integrated subsea and terrestrial solution for all our customers and partners alike, supporting EllaLink’s open access and carrier neutral philosophy.”

EllaLink and Telxius collaborate on Brazil-Portugal subsea cable

The EllaLink Group and Telxius signed a collaboration agreement for international subsea capacity and terrestrial connectivity in Latin America, including cable landing facilities in Fortaleza, Brazil.

The complementary infrastructure owned by EllaLink and Telxius will enable European traffic to reach Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and other key cities in Brazil and across Latin America.

EllaLink is an open state-of-the-art 4 fiber pair submarine cable system currently under construction. It will provide the first direct fiber route between Europe and Latin America.  The

This collaboration will leverage on the extensive Telxius’ subsea cable network and its terrestrial extensions across Latin America. EllaLink begins Marine Route Survey for Brazil-Portugal cable

Alcatel Submarine Networks has finalized the Cable Route Study and mobilized the marine survey vessel for the EllaLink submarine cable system. A marine route survey will be conducted over the coming months.

EllaLink will be a state-of-the-art 4 fiber pair submarine cable system linking Europe and Latin America with up to 72 Tbps of capacity. The low latency EllaLink route avoids the congestion of the North Atlantic.

EllaLink plans to be Ready for Service by the end of 2020.

Cellnex to acquire mobile towers in Portugal

Cellnex agreed to acquire approximately 2,000 mobile towers in Portugal from NOS. The deal includes a portfolio of telecommunication towers and rooftop antennas, located in urban (40%), suburban and rural (60%) areas throughout the country.

The transaction represents an initial payment of approximately EUR 375 million (EV), in addition to expansion Capex of up to about EUR 175 million related to perimeter increase (up to 400 new sites, including a Build-to-Suit program) and other agreed initiatives over the next 6 years. The acquisition will be financed with available cash.

Cellnex and NOS also signed an initial 15-year contract, extendible by successive additional 15-year periods, under which NOS will continue to use the sites that Cellnex will operate, locating its voice and data signal transmission equipment there.

Cellnex CEO Tobias Martinez underlined “the capacity of Cellnex teams, both at corporate level and in Portugal, to continue progressing in new agreements with our customers, even at a particularly complex and sensitive scenario as the one we are currently facing.”

Cellnex Telecom already operates 61,000 sites in Spain, Italy, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Portugal.

New branches to extend MainOne cable to Cote D’Ivoire and Senegal

Two additional branches are planned to extend MainOne’s subsea cable system to Dakar (Senegal) and Abidjan (Cote D’Ivoire). With this development, MainOne will have landing points in five markets – Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Cote D’Ivoire and Portugal, in addition to Cameroon.

MainOne, which is a 7,000km cable system that spans from Portugal to Nigeria, entered service in 2010. Technology updates will boost potential capacity to 10 TBps of capacity. The upgrades are expected to become operational in November 2019.

TE SubCom is lead contractor on the project. MainOne has also selected SubCom’s WSS ROADM for the new branches. SubCom will light the new branches with Ciena’s transmission equipment.

Vodafone tests Huawei's cloud-based Broadband Network Gateway

Vodafone recently completed the second phase test of Huawei's cloud-based Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) solution in a fixed broadband scenario.

The phase I testing was performed in December 2017 and focused on 52 functional tests of the solution, while the phase II testing, completed in May 2018, focused on the Vodafone Portugal service architecture including internet access and VPN services. Both phase I and II have been completed successfully.

Phase II testing covered access, authentication and accounting for home broadband users in various scenarios. It also included performance, reliability and security testing of cloud-based BNG systems. Vodafone and Huawei verified functionality of the cloud-based BNG solution using virtual network functions (VNFs) as the control plane and also using physical network functions (PNFs) as the user plane.

Huawei says its BNG solution features a Control & User Plane Separation (CUPS) architecture, which decouples the control and user planes of traditional BNG architectures. The control plane integrates the user management functions of multiple BNGs and shifts their resources to the cloud. In addition to automated service provisioning and network O&M, the solution deployment in the cloud also enables global resource sharing, elastic capacity scaling, flexible architecture adjustment and network capability exposure.

Jeffrey Gao, President of Huawei's Router & Carrier Ethernet Product line, stated: "Cloud-based BNG is an innovative implementation of Huawei's Intent-Driven Network in the context of network service cloudification. The Intent-Driven Network decouples traditional networks into an elastic, reliable bearer layer and an agile service layer. This creates a simple architecture enabling the rapid and flexible adjustment of resources. This solution helps operators improve the efficiency of their network operations, reduce O&M costs and smoothly evolve network services to the cloud."

Altice Bids EUR 7.4 Billion for Portugal Telecom

Altice confirmed an offer to acquire Portugal Telecom from Oi for EUR 7.4 billion n on a cash and debt-free free basis which includes EUR 500 million consideration related to the future revenue generation of Portugal Telecom. The transaction, net of financial debt, accrued post-retirement liabilities and other purchase price adjustments will be financed by new debt and existing cash from Altice. The deal includes the existing business of Portugal Telecom outside of Africa and excludes Portugal Telecom's Rio Forte debt securities, Oi treasury shares and Portugal Telecom financing vehicles.

Altice is a multinational cable and telecommunications company with presence in three regions-Western Europe (comprising France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland), Israel and the Overseas Territories (currently comprising the French Caribbean and the Indian Ocean regions and the Dominican Republic).

  • Last week, Altice completed the financial transaction that combined SFR and Numericable.  Vivendi received EUR 13.366 billion in cash of which EUR 200 million will be contributed to the financing of the acquisition of Virgin Mobile by Numericable Group. The amount of  EUR 13.166 billion will be subject to an accounting analysis to confirm the estimated amount of net indebtedness, in accordance with the contract. Vivendi will keep a 20% stake in the new combined entity, which it will be free to sell after a one-year lock-up period, subject to Altice's pre-emption right. 

  • Numericable currently has over 5.2 million fiber homes in France, with more than 10 million homes passed.  SFR has 3G/4G mobile networks in France as well as 1.6 million fiber homes.

Portugal Telecom Powers New Data Center with Renewable Energy

Portugal Telecom inaugurated a next generation data center in Covilhã, Portugal, designed to serve as a global hosting center for IT and cloud computing infrastructure.

The Tier III data center is divided into 4 main sections plus one support section, for a total area of 75,500 m². There are 24 infrastructure halls offering occupying 12,000m² of open equipment space.

The data center boasts 100%  renewable energy sources. There is an on-site photovoltaic power station that should supply 30 percent of the anticipated load.. A Free Air Cooling system will be used.  Advanced control and monitoring systems will deliver a PUE of 1.25.
