IBM Intros More OpenPOWER Linux Servers

IBM introduced Linux-based servers based on its new POWER8 Chip and innovations from the OpenPOWER community.

The new servers join IBM's Power Systems LC lineup and aim to outperform x86-based servers on a variety of data-intensive workloads.

The servers leverage the IBM POWER8 silicon with NVIDIA NVLink, which is a high-speed, energy-efficient bidirectional interconnect that directly connects the new IBM POWER8 processor with NVIDIA Tesla P100 Pascal GPUs. NVIDIA NVLink is embedded at the silicon level and incorporated into the overall system design.

IBM said this tight coupling of IBM and NVIDIA technology enables data to flow 5x faster than on an x86-based system.

Tencent is testing the servers. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have also been early testers and the systems will serve as an early-generation test bed for developing demanding applications for Summit and Sierra, the next generation supercomputers that IBM expects to deliver respectively to ORNL and LLNL in 2017.

OpenPOWER Advances in HyperScale Data Center Race

Since its founding two years ago, the OpenPOWER Foundation, which is an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture, has grown to more than 200 participating companies and organizations. The goal is to build advanced server, networking, storage and GPU-acceleration technology for next-generation, hyperscale data centers.

At the second annual OpenPOWER Summit held in San Jose this week, more than 50 new infrastructure and software innovations, spanning the entire system stack, including systems, boards, cards and accelerators are showcased.

Some highlights:

  • New Servers for High Performance Computing and Cloud Deployments – Foundation members introduced more than 10 new OpenPOWER servers, offering expanded services for high performance computing and server virtualization.
  • Google is developing a next-generation OpenPOWER and Open Compute Project form factor server. Google is working with Rackspace to co-develop an open server specification based on the new POWER9 architecture, and the two companies will submit a candidate server design to the Open Compute Project.
  • Rackspace announced that “Barreleye” has moved from the lab to the data center. Rackspace anticipates “Barreleye” will move into broader availability throughout the rest of the year, with the first applications on the Rackspace Public Cloud powered by OpenStack. Rackspace and IBM collectively contributed the “Barreleye” specifications to the Open Compute Project in January 2016.
  • IBM, in collaboration with NVIDIA and Wistron, plans to release its second-generation OpenPOWER server,which includes support for the NVIDIA Tesla Accelerated Computing platform. The server will leverage POWER8 processors connected directly to the new NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU accelerators via the NVIDIA NVLink high-speed interconnect technology. Early systems will be available in Q4 2016. Additionally, IBM and NVIDIA plan to create global acceleration labs to help developers and ISVs port applications on the POWER8 and NVIDIA NVLink-based platform.
  • Expanded use of CAPI for Acceleration Technology – Foundation members, including Bittware, IBM, Mellanox and Xilinx, unveiled more than a dozen new accelerator solutions based on the Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (CAPI). Alpha Data also unveiled a Xilinx FPGA-based CAPI hardware card at the Summit. These new accelerator technologies leverage CAPI to provide performance, cost and power benefits when compared to application programs running on a core or custom acceleration implementation attached via non-coherent interfaces. This is a key differentiator in building infrastructure to accelerate computation of big data and analytics workloads on the POWER architecture.

  • A Continued Commitment to Genomics Research – Following successful collaborations with LSU and tranSMART, OpenPOWER Foundation members continue to develop new advancements for genomics research. Edico Genome announced the DRAGEN Genomics Platform, a new appliance that enables ultra-rapid analysis of genomic data, reducing the time to analyze an entire genome from hours to just minutes, allowing healthcare providers to identify patients at higher risk for cancer before conditions worsen.

U-Michigan Collaborates with IBM on HPC

The University of Michigan is collaborating with IBM to develop and deliver “data-centric” supercomputing systems based on OpenPower architecture.

Specifically, under a grant from the National Science Foundation,  U-M researchers have designed a computing resource called ConFlux to enable high performance computing clusters to communicate directly and at interactive speeds with data-intensive operations.

ConFlux incorporates IBM Power Systems LC servers and is also powered by the latest additions to the NVIDIA Tesla Accelerated Computing Platform: NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU accelerators with the NVLink high-speed interconnect technology. Additional data-centric solutions U-M is using include IBM Elastic Storage Server, IBM Spectrum Scale software (scale-out, parallel access network attached storage), and IBM Platform Computing software.

An initial application for the high-performance system involves a simulation of turbulence around aircraft and rocket engines.

OpenPOWER Shows Prototypes for Next Gen Data Centers

The OpenPOWER Foundation – an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture - showcased a number of products and prototypes for next gen data center systems based on the POWER8 microprocessor.

Some highlights:

  • Prototype of IBM’s first OpenPOWER high performance computing server on the path to exascale – IBM and Wistron are jointly developing the first OpenPOWER-based high performance computing server using technology from NVIDIA and Mellanox. The system will be the debut offering in a series of solutions to be introduced as part of IBM's OpenPOWER technical computing roadmap, which includes IBM’s future delivery of two systems to Lawrence Livermore and Oak Ridge National Laboratories. The systems are predicted to be five to 10 times faster than today’s leading supercomputers.


  • First commercially available OpenPOWER server, the TYAN TN71-BP012 – With planned availability in the second quarter of 2015, the TYAN TN71-BP012 servers are designed for large-scale cloud deployments and follow Tyan’s highly successful OpenPOWER customer reference system introduced in October 2014. IBM will be among the first to deploy the new servers as part of its SoftLayer infrastructure, utilizing them for a new bare metal service offering.
  • First GPU-accelerated OpenPOWER developer platform, the Cirrascale RM4950 – The Cirrascale RM4950 is the result of collaboration between NVIDIA, Tyan and one of the OpenPOWER Foundation’s newest members, Cirrascale. Immediately available for order and shipping in volume in the second quarter of 2015, the platform supports the development of GPU-accelerated big data analytics, deep learning, and scientific computing applications.
  • Open server specification and motherboard mock-up combining OpenPOWER, Open Compute and OpenStack – Rackspace, a managed cloud company, revealed an open server design and prototype motherboard, combining OpenPOWER and Open Compute design concepts. The new design, targeted to run OpenStack services and be deployed in Rackspace data centers, will draw upon a wide range of open innovations to deliver users improved performance, value, and features.


“Since our first public event just under one year ago, the OpenPOWER Foundation has expanded dramatically and enabled the development of a new breed of data center technology products worldwide,” said Gordon MacKean, OpenPOWER Foundation Chair. “Through our members’ individual and collective efforts we are positively changing the game, delivering innovations that advance data center technology, expand choice and drive market efficiency.”

The OpenPOWER Foundation noted that the organization has grown to more than 110 businesses, organizations and individuals across 22 countries.  The OpenPOWER Foundation also announced the formation of the OpenPOWER Advisory Group, a formal mechanism for engaging with other open development organizations. Inaugural members of the Advisory Group represent the Linux Foundation, the Open Compute Project and the China POWER Technology Alliance (CPTA).

OpenPOWER Foundation Builds Momentum for its Architecture

Rackspace is the latest member to join the OpenPOWER Foundation – an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture.  One year after its formation, the OpenPOWER Foundation now has 80 members.

For 2015, OpenPOWER said it is planning a slate of development activities through its work groups as well as collaborative member projects. For example, currently 12 members are designing OpenPOWER systems, and several universities are conducting research with OpenPOWER based technologies.  These projects and other member work underway build upon a growing set of OpenPOWER compatible solutions introduced in the last quarter of 2014 including:

  • Nallatech collaboration with Altera produced the OpenPOWER CAPI Developer Kit for IBM POWER8
  • Tyan launched the TYAN GN70-BP010, the world’s first OpenPOWER customer reference system
  • NVIDIA and IBM collaboration produced the IBM Power S824L server with GPU acceleration
  • Redis Labs, Altera, Canonical and IBM collaboration produced the IBM Data Engine for NoSQL, a CAPI-enabled solution for NoSQL data stores


The OpenPOWER Foundation’s Technical Steering Committee has chartered six work groups.  The latest one formed addresses interoperability, allowing different server component technologies to work together.  Named the 25G IO Interoperability Mode Work Group, this new work group focuses on physical interfaces — the wiring that connects componentry — and will provide members a forum to work out an interoperability mode for custom 25Gbps PHYs. The interoperability work group joins the previously established Systems Software, OpenServer Development Platform, Hardware Architecture, Compliance and Accelerator work groups.

“We’re very excited with what we’ve accomplished over the past year, not just in terms of our expanding roster but as measured by our ability to tap into the unique talents each member brings to our growing community of innovators,” said OpenPOWER Chairman Gordon MacKean.

In addition, the foundation plans to host the first OpenPOWER Summit on March 17-19, 2015, at the San JoseConvention Center in California.
