OE Solutions announces 50G Bidirectional optical transceiver for 5G

OE Solutions announced a 50G bidirectional SFP28 ER ST optical transceiver.

The new 50G BIDI ER ST transceiver, which is aimed especially at wireless mid-haul applications, operates in the O-band with a standard-temperature (ST) rating in a QSFP28 form factor. It supports a transmission distance of 40km.

The new device joins OE Solutions’ extensive portfolio of 10G, 25G and now 50G optical transceivers for wireless access networks, including front-, mid- and backhaul.

OE Solutions said the ambitious goals of the wide range of performance metrics in the 3GPP release-16 standard, which is expected to be ratified in 2020, will impact the optical access network supporting 5G wireless services dramatically. Much higher capacities need to be delivered to a much larger number of antennas. In addition, compute and storage resources will be required closer to the antennas than was the case for LTE and previous-generation wireless services. As the network architectures evolve to support these changes, new optical transceiver requirements have emerged.

The 50G PAM4 BIDI ER optical transceiver leverages PAM4 encoding to enable 50G duplex connectivity over a single fiber. When considered in conjunction with OE Solutions’ 10G and 25G NRZ BIDI transceivers, service providers can size a single-fiber connection cost-efficiently to match the
bandwidth demand. The 50G PAM4 transceiver employs dual-25G electrical interfaces of a QSFP28 standards-compliant module design. As such, the module offers a simple way to double the bandwidth over a single-fiber link without having to install filters for wavelength multiplexing.

OE Solutions' 25G transceivers deployed for 5G rollout in South Korea

OE Solutions confirmed that its 25Gbps and 10G transceivers are being deployed in the nation-wide roll-out of 5G in South Korea, where the three largest wireless network operators have committed to build nation-wide networks that will serve 80% of the population by the end of 2020. The nationwide rollout is expected to entail more than 1M optical transceivers of various types at a cost exceeding $400 million.

OE Solutions said the deployments include both 10Gbps and 25Gbps transceivers for the fronthaul connection utilizing a mix of CWDM and DWDM to maximize the utility of the existing fiber plant. OE Solutions, which is a major supplier of transceivers for both data rates, have been delivering more than 2,000 units of 25Gbps LWDM transceivers per week to support the rapid roll-out and plan to increase the capacity further.

Custom-grid WDM transceivers in the O-band, such as LWDM (utilizing the LAN wavelength grid), offer capital and time-to-market advantages by allowing coexistence of 5G with other services on the existing fiber plant.

OE Solutions announces 10G and 25G optical transceivers for 5G fronthaul

OE Solutions introduced 10Gbps and 25Gbps DWDM optical transceivers for the O-band and C-band, respectively.

These Industrial-Temperature rated (IT) transceivers, together with the company's previously released 25G LWDM optical transceiver, increase network operators’ options for leveraging wavelength multiplexing and economically deploy new wavelengths on existing fiber plant and serve added 5G radio heads with minimal changes to the optical architecture.

OE Solutions said its growing portfolio of 10Gbps and 25Gbps offers higher spectral efficiencies with DWDM transceivers in the O-band in addition to the more conventional use of DWDM in the C-band. These products not only increase the information density in a band, such as the O-band for example, but also offers an elegant migration path by leaving connections in other spectral bands of the same fiber unaffected.

OE Solutions expands 25Gbps portfolio with designs for 5G fronthaul

OE Solutions introduced two industrial-temperature rated 25Gbps SFP28 transceiver products for access applications, including for 5G fronthaul.

Fiber and spectrum scarcity have been constant drivers for bi-directional transceivers and we now see interest in alternative WDM solutions in the O-band, including LAN-WDM as well as custom wavelengths, as a way to increase fiber capacity,” said Per Hansen, VP Marketing & Sales of OE Solutions. “We have been a leading supplier of specialized transceiver solutions for wireless fronthaul since OE Solutions’ formation 15 years ago. These transceivers will be generally available in Q3 2018.

OE Solutions introduces Packet over SONET Smart SFP

OE Solutions introduced a Smart SFP transceiver for 2.5 Gbps Packet over SONET/SDH.

The new SFP+ transceiver can be used to connect routers and switches across SONET/SDH networks, without the need for a dedicated interface card.

The company says that by inserting its plug-and-play Smart SFP in a free 10GbE port, any router or packet switch can be upgraded to support 2.5 Gbps Packet over SONET/SDH, saving power, space and cost. Additionally, it provides extra flexibility, as any number of SFP+ ports can be upgraded to provide a SONET/SDH network interface. The new Packet over SONET Smart SFP is currently in field trials and will be available during Q4 2018.

OE Solutions already has a rich portfolio of Smart SFP solutions for TDM over Packet, that allows customers, ranging from large network equipment manufacturers to small city carriers, to deploy new services on their network or to solve problems which could not be easily solved before, by using the Smart SFPs.

OE Solutions debuts 25G Transceivers for 5G fronthaul

OE Solutions, a global supplier of optical transceivers based in Gwangju, South Korea with R&D centres in the USA, the Netherlands as well as offices worldwide, introduced three new 25Gbps SFP28 transceiver products at OFC designed for emerging 5G wireless fronthaul architectures.

The new 25Gbps transceivers joining OE Solutions’ extensive list of IT-rated transceivers for wireless applications are:

  • 25Gbps SFP28 1270nm/1310nm BIDI IT for distances up to 30km
  • 25Gbps SFP28 1310nm Duplex IT for distances up to 30km
  • 25Gbps SFP28 CWDM IT for distances up to 10km

Sampling is expected in Q2.

OE Solutions showcases its 25G SFP28 transceivers

OE Solutions, a global supplier of optical transceivers based in Gwangju, South Korea with R&D centres in the USA, the Netherlands as well as offices worldwide, has begun sampling a portfolio of 25G SFP28 optical transceivers for enterprise and access network applications.

The company will be demonstrating the portfolio at this week's ECOC 2017 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The first two devices in OE Solutions's 25G SFP28 portfolio are multi-rate transceivers for next generation datacom applications and wireless infrastructure. Specifically, the new 25G transceivers are:

  • 25Gbps (25G Ethernet, 8G-FC, 16G-FC and 32G-FC) 1310nm Standard-Temperature SFP28 for distances up to 10km
  • 25Gbps (25G Ethernet, CPRI-10) 1310nm Industrial-Temperature SFP28 for distances up to 10km

OE Solutions said it sees an opportunity for 25G both in data centre applications as well as in access networks, where IEEE work is underway to develop 25G Ethernet with eCPRI support for optical connectivity to 5G infrastructure.


  • In March 2017, OE Solutions announced high-density transceivers, including 2x10Gbps Compact SFP+, 4x10Gbps QSFP+, and 25Gbps SFP28, for wireless fronthaul applications. The new industrial-temperature rated transceivers are designed for high port densities in radio access network equipment.
  • Also in March 2017, OE Solutions began shipping Extended Reach 10Gbps CWDM SFP+ transceivers supporting 1GE and 10GE for Ethernet applications as well as CPRI-2 to CPRI-8 for wireless network applications.
