Spark New Zealand pilots private 5G solution from Huawei

Spark New Zealand is testing a private 5G solution from Huawei to provide connectivity for a sailboat from Emirates Team New Zealand ahead of the next America’s Cup.

The trial 5G service, which covers parts of Auckland Harbour, off Milford and Takapuna,is an extension of Spark’s existing 5G Lab in Wynyard Quarter in downtown Auckland, and uses test spectrum on loan from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

It is delivered using Huawei equipment.

Vodafone New Zealand implements adaptive networking with Ciena

Vodafone New Zealand is unveiling an adaptable and agile network that can respond in real time to its customers’ changing demands.

The adaptive network provides business customers with a digital user-interface for requesting additional network capacity. Vodafone can also set customer-defined service policies and program its network to suggest the ideal capacity, hardware configuration and spectral placement for any channel, across any network path.

Vodafone New Zealand is using technology from Ciena, including its Blue Planet Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) Domain Controller and Liquid Spectrum, which is a software-defined optical application.

Ciena said its solutions create a more adaptive network that can predict and address connectivity and capacity challenges by offering real-time, accurate planning data for both existing and new planned services. Additionally, with Ciena’s Liquid Restoration capability, the operator can significantly improve service availability with flexible adjustment of deployed coherent optical capacity and route affected services across any available path in the network.

“To respond to changes in end-user consumption and explosion in data usage, leading operators like Vodafone New Zealand must both automate and scale their networks,” said Rick Seeto, Vice President and General Manager, Ciena Asia Pacific & Japan. “They need a network that can adapt and respond, in real time, to their customers’ ever-changing demands while transforming from a necessary capability to a strategic asset – that’s the basis of the adaptive network.”

Final splice complete on Hawaiki transpacific cable with up to 43 Tbps of capacity

The final splice of the Hawaiki Submarine Cable has been made and the system is on schedule for commercial launch next month

The carrier-neutral Hawaiki subsea cable links Australia and New Zealand to the mainland United States, as well as Hawaii and American Samoa, with additional potential future landings in New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga.

The Hawaiki Cable System comprises over 15,000 km of high-capacity cable, and the use of TE SubCom's optical add/drop multiplexing (OADM) nodes allows for additional landings in the Pacific region to be added as needed.
Hawaiki will provide 43 Tb of new capacity in the Pacific region, significantly dropping the cost of connectivity in this area.

“Hawaiki will positively impact the countless communities and economies in the Pacific,” said Remi Galasso, CEO of Hawaiki. “Because of its scope and impact for communities in the Pacific region, the Hawaiki Cable System is a critical and multi-faceted endeavor. A second successful launch for Rocket:ab from NZ

Rocket Lab successfully completed its test launch from its from the Māhia Peninsula in New Zealand.

The Electron rocket reached orbit and deployed customer payloads at 8 minutes and 31 seconds after lift-off.

“Today marks the beginning of a new era in commercial access to space. We’re thrilled to reach this milestone so quickly after our first test launch,” says Rocket Lab CEO and founder Peter Beck. “Our incredibly dedicated and talented team have worked tirelessly to develop, build and launch Electron. I’m immensely proud of what they have achieved today.”

The payload included a Dove Pioneer Earth-imaging satellite for launch customer Planet, as well as two Lemur-2 satellites for weather and ship tracking company Spire.

Founded in 2006 by Peter Beck, Rocket Lab is headquartered in Los Angeles with operations and a launch site in New Zealand. It is a privately funded company with investors including Khosla Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, DCVC (Data Collective), Lockheed Martin, Promus Ventures and K1W1.

TE SubCom provides update on progress with Hawaiki cable system

Hawaiki Submarine Cable and TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity company that delivers undersea communications technology, have provided a further update on the project to deploy the 14,000 km Hawaiki trans-Pacific cable system that will link Australia and New Zealand to the mainland U.S. and Hawaii and American Samoa.

The partners have announced manufacturing progress, as well as ongoing advances with the installation permitting process in New Zealand, Australia and the U.S., stating that the Hawaiki cable system remains on schedule for completion by mid-2018.

Specifically, TE SubCom and Hawaiki Submarine Cable announced that:

1.         At SubCom’s Newington, New Hampshire facility, more than 13,000 km of cable for the Hawaiki system has been manufactured, together with more than 150 completed repeaters.

2.         Installation permits for Australia, New Zealand and Oregon are in process, and are progressing as expected in Hawaii.

3.         Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for the cable landing in Pacific City, Oregon has commenced and is due to be completed over the coming weeks.

4.         In Sydney, the construction of the land duct route is progressing, with more than half of the conduits installed, while HDD operations are scheduled to begin in June.

5.         The first cable load, including 7,000 km of cable, is scheduled to begin in June.

New Zealand's Hawaiki Cable announced in 2013 that it had awarded a turnkey supply and installation contract to TE SubCom to build the 14,000 km trans-Pacific cable linking Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii to the US west coast.


  • The Hawaiki cable system will support capacity of up to 10 Tbit/s per fibre pair on the Australia/New-Zealand to U.S. route, while a number of Pacific Islands along the route will be able to connect to the main trunk.  The wet plant equipment is based on 100 Gbit/s technology and designed to allow for future upgrades. The cable system will also feature SubCom's OADM branching unit technology to allow connection of multiple regional branches to the main cable.

Spark New Zealand Installs 200G Wavelength with Nokia PSS 1830

Spark, New Zealand's leading communications service provider, has deployed the country's first 200G per wavelength production fiber link using Nokia's PSS1830 Optical Transport Network (OTN).

Spark's new 200Gbps network link connects its core network with the global gateway, and enables the service provider stay ahead of the data demand curve for both residential and enterprise customers.

Nokia said it has now shipped its 200G solution to more than 88 customers worldwide.

"Like many operators, Spark has faced relentless growth in bandwidth demand, largely driven by an increase in video streaming by business and consumer users. By taking a flexible approach to this challenge with New Zealand's first 200Gbps fiber link, together with Nokia, Spark is well placed to meet continued demand growth while meeting existing user expectations," stated Ray Owen, head of Oceania at Nokia.

NZ Breaks Ground for Hawaiki Landing Station

New Zealand Prime Minister, Rt Hon John Key, and Minister of Communications, Hon Amy Adams, participated in a ground breaking ceremony for the Hawaiki Submarine Cable landing station at Bream Tail, Mangawhai Heads, Northland, New Zealand.

The 14,000 km Hawaiki submarine cable will link New Zealand to Australia, Hawaii and mainland United States, with options to expand to several South Pacific islands.

“The Hawaiki cable brings huge benefits to New Zealand in terms of greater capacity, competition in Internet pricing, resilience and security of supply, and increased opportunities for our technology and IT industries,” said Hawaiki Chairman Sir Eion Edgar.

Hawaiki Transpacific Cable Project is On Track

Pre-deployment work on Hawaiki, the 14,000 km transpacific cable system scheduled for completion in mid-2018, is on track. Hawaiki will link Australia and New Zealand to the mainland United States, as well as Hawaii, with options to expand to several South Pacific islands.

Hawaiki Submarine Cable LP and TE SubCom announced that system manufacturing has commenced. Some updates:

  • More than 1,000 kilometers of lightweight cable has been manufactured to date for Hawaiki at TE SubCom’s facility in Newington, N.H., USA.
  • Manufacturing of Hawaiki repeaters is underway.
  • Detailed landing surveys have been completed for sites in Pacific City, Oregon and Kapolei, Hawaii.
  • Completion of deep sea survey from Oregon to Hawaii.
  • Survey has covered all of U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), with the completion of the branch to American Samoa
  • In September 2016, Hawaiki Submarine Cable LP officially submitted for a submarine cable landing license from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
  • Demonstrating its commitment to the connectivity of Pacific Islands, Hawaiki has added three additional branching units to enable the future connection of New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga.

AWS Signs Up for Hawaiki Transpacific Cable

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has purchased capacity in the Hawaiki Submarine Cable to speed performance and reduce latency for their cloud customers operating between
Australia/New Zealand and the US. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Hawaiki Submarine Cable, due to go live in June 2018, will offer more than 30 Tbps of capacity between the U.S. and Australia and New Zealand, which is considerably larger than the network capacity available today.

Amazon Web Services’ global infrastructure comprises 33 Availability Zones across 12 geographic regions worldwide, (including one in Sydney),
with another 5 AWS Regions (and 11 Availability Zones) in Canada, China, India, Ohio, and the UnitedKingdom expected to come online throughout the next year.

AWS Australia and New Zealand Managing Director, Paul Migliorini, said; “Our customers in Australia and New Zealand will benefit significantly from the arrival of the Hawaiki submarine cable. The role of the network, as well as the many AWS Regions around the world, is especially important for our customers looking to run global businesses and become more agile."

Ericsson will sell its fiber cable and duct business in Wellington, New Zealand, to Hexatronic Group AB.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

Hexatronic offers all 19 Ericsson employees who are currently employed in the business, employment in the continuing business.

Southern Cross Cable Deploys Ciena 8700 Packetwave Switch

Southern Cross Cable Network, which connects Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii, completed its latest upgrade adding 900 Gbps to all segments of the network, bringing total Network lit capacity to 5.8Tbs. In addition, Southern Cross Cable Network has deployed the Ciena 8700 Packetwave packet switching platform, augmenting its existing suite of Carrier Ethernet services.

“While we have augmented our transmission by 900 Gbps per segment, we have also upgraded our key Ciena 5430 nodes to 15 Tbps OTN switching capability, a first for the region and a world first for a submarine cable operator as far as we are aware. Southern Cross’ key switching nodes are now capable of switching over 100 times Southern Cross’ original segment capacity," stated Anthony Briscoe, president & CEO of Southern Cross.

Pacific Wave Adds 40G TransPacific Capacity

Pacific Wave has upgraded its U.S. West Coast peering exchange by adding a second 40 Gbps connection to Australia and New Zealand. The link goes from Los Angeles through the Big Island of Hawaii and on to Australia. It complements an exisitng 40 Gbps link from Seattle through Oahu to Australia.

Pacific Wave is a state-of-the-art international peering exchange designed to serve research and education networks throughout the Pacific Rim and beyond and features connection points at three US West Coast locations: the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Seattle. It is a joint project between the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) and the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP) with support from the University of Southern California and the University of Washington.

Brocade Supplies High-Performance Cloud Fabric for NZ's AO Cloud

New Zealand-based AO Cloud Ltd has selected Brocade's VCS Fabric technology and data center architecture for a new wave of "convergent cloud" solutions.

Specifically, AO Cloud has deployed Brocade VDX 6740 Switches in its data centers to create single-layer 10 GbE fabrics. The fabrics are automatically aware of all devices (servers, switches, appliances) within their domain, and AO Cloud can add and remove switches from any VCS fabric without manual configuration. Virtual Machine (VM) network automation features are intrinsic to the fabric and are also hypervisor-agnostic.  To extend VM awareness and mobility between data centres, AO Cloud has also deployed Brocade NetIron CER 2000 Series high-performance routers that support Layer 2 VPN connections between sites. In common with the Brocade VDX switches, the new routers feature Software-Defined Networking (SDN) capabilities based on the OpenFlow standard, providing greater programmatic control over the network.

"AO Cloud is differentiating its cloud services offering with a new network architecture we have branded 'convergent cloud.' Our plans always encompass fast compute and storage facilities that could talk to multiple production data centres, capable of isolating customer traffic in VLANs and producing an extremely secure environment," said Jeff Herbert, Director, AO Cloud Ltd.

"For this we needed the highly scalable capabilities of Brocade Ethernet fabrics. We also wanted to provision the network for SDN capabilities to facilitate drag-and-drop capabilities for VLANs between data centres, and prepare to write our own SDN software to modify new connections as homogenous across the network. For this we needed an active-active data centre environment to host resilient managed services. It had to be Brocade," added Herbert.

Brocade said active-active data centre architectures support real-time synchronization and load balancing of applications and their data between two or more cloud data centers, enabling service delivery from any or all of them. This approach makes location another virtualized layer in the service cloud. AO Cloud is leveraging the SDN capabilities of Brocade routers and switches to help its customers design and self-provision secure Layer 2 VPNs within the cloud built around multiple data centres.

"The automated fabric environment that AO Cloud has constructed provides a key technical benefit of allowing it to manage customer services, rather than focusing on managing infrastructure," said Gary Denman, Senior Director for Australia and New Zealand at Brocade. "Not very long ago, the concept of virtual machine mobility between data centers was just a theory, but AO Cloud is now leveraging it to offer a range of services with strong value-add. I believe this is very much a sign of how the cloud will deliver business services in the future."

Vodafone New Zealand Rolls 700 MHz LTE with Nokia

Vodafone New Zealand has selected Nokia Networks to enable the launch of its commercial 700 MHz LTE network, one of the first Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) 700 MHz networks in the world.  The APT 700 MHz digital dividend spectrum band is harmonized across several countries in the Asia Pacific region.

“Our focus this year is about expanding our 4G network to rural New Zealand with 700MHz, and Nokia Networks will play an important part in implementing this initiative. We’ll be activating 4G wherever possible on new Rural Broadband Initiative sites this year,” stated Vodafone New Zealand Director of Technology, Sandra Pickering.

In 2012, Vodafone acquire dTelstraClear from Telstra Corporation for NZ$840 million (£430 million, US$664 million) in cash. The deal included TelstraClear’s voice and data-based services, network infrastructure and New Zealand customer base.

Vodafone New Zealand was already the country’s largest mobile operator with more than 2.4 million customers. TelstraClear owned New Zealand’s second largest fixed infrastructure, which includes a 6,600km fibre backbone connecting 19 of the country’s largest cities. It also includes an extensive local access network with 2,000km of fibre and 4,500km of copper as well as a cable TV and broadband access network passing 150,000 homes in Wellington and Christchurch. Its customer base includes government and large corporations, small and medium enterprises as well as consumers.

Telecom New Zealand Employs Huawei for LTE

Telecom New Zealand launch a new "Ultra Mobile" 4G LTE network in parts of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Huawei provided a convergent radio access network (RAN) technology solution for the network based on its SingleRAN technology.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

Telecom NZ to Sell Australian Subsidiary for A$450 Million

Telecom NZ agreed to sell its Australian subsidiary, AAPT, to TPG Telecom for A$450 million. The deal represents approximately 6.4x AAPT’s current recurring annualised EBITDA run-rate of approximately A$70m.

AAPT operates a national network serving enterprise, government, wholesale and broadcast companies across Australia.

Telecom NZ agreed to sell its Australian subsidiary, AAPT, to TPG Telecom for A$450 million. The deal represents approximately 6.4x AAPT’s current recurring annualised EBITDA run-rate of approximately A$70m.

TPG is an Australian ISP/Telco that owns end-to-end network infrastructure which includes over 400 DSLAM enabled telephone exchanges across Australia, extensive metropolitan fibre optic networks, and the international PPC-1 submarine cable connecting Australia and Guam with onwards connectivity to USA and Japan.

Telecom NZ said the sale lets it focus on operations in its home market.  Sale proceeds will be used to repay debts.

Hawaiki Plans 100G-capable Trans-Pacific Cable System

New Zealand's Hawaiki Cable Limited has awarded a turnkey supply and installation contract to TE SubCom to build a 14,000 km trans-Pacific cable linking Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii to the US west coast.

The Hawaiki cable system will be capable of 10 Tbps per fibre pair on the Australia/New-Zealand to USA trunk. A number of Pacific Islands located next to the cable route will be able to connect to the main trunk.  The undersea cable system elements - known as ‘wet plant’ - will be based on 100 Gbps wavelengths technology and are designed for future upgrades as terminal equipment advances. The cable system will also include SubCom’s Optical Add Drop Multiplexing (OADM) branching unit technology to connect multiple regional branches to the main cable.

“Our procurement process first started in October 2012 and has progressed according to plan. The supply contract with TE SubCom is a major step forward for Hawaiki and adds significant momentum to our project” said Rémi Galasso, Chief Executive Officer of Hawaiki Cable Limited.

The Hawaiki cable system is planned for completion in late 2015.

Huawei's Founder Gives First Media Interview

Ren Zhengfei, the founder of Huawei, made his first media appearance since establishing the company over 26 years ago.

Speaking to the media in New Zealand, Ren said Huawei does not present a cyber security threat and there is no factual basis to make such accusations.

Huawei recently won a major bid to supply LTE equipment to  Telecom New Zealand.

Cyan Supplies SDN-enabled Packet-Optical in Auckland

Vocus Communications, which provides telecommunications and data center services to ISPs in Australia and New Zealand, is deploying the Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms and the Cyan 360 software-defined network (SDN) operations system for its newly constructed network in Auckland.

The initial deployment consists of Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms configured with wavelength selectable switch (WSS) reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) and 10G service modules. Vocus will employ Cyan 360 SDN operations systems to facilitate multi-layer planning, management and performance verification of the network. Cyan's metro SDN solution also supports multi-vendor integration to maintain operational simplicity while using best-in-class ecosystem components. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Pacific Fibre Ceases Operations Due to Lack of Funding


Pacific Fibre, which was planning the longest and most technically advanced undersea cable systems linking Australia, New Zealand and USA, has ceased operations after failing to raise the NZ$400m required to fund the cable build. The company had been planning a two-cable system linking Australia and New Zealand via a trans-Tasman cable, and another cable connecting New Zealand to the United States.

“The global investment market is undoubtedly difficult at the moment but we knew this was always going to be hard, regardless of our timing. We started Pacific Fibre because we know how important it is to connect New Zealanders to global markets. The high cost of broadband in New Zealand makes it hard to connect globally and it is this market failure, not a technical failure, that we tried hard to solve” said co-founder and director Rod Drury.

“We still cannot see how the government’s investment in UFB makes sense until the price of international bandwidth is greatly reduced” said Mr Drury.

The company noted that the cost of bandwidth to the U.S. from New Zealand as 5.8 times greater than the price paid by Australians, according to a 2011 study from the Australian telecommunication research company Market Clarity.
