Australia's NBN Co pushes fiber deeper and advances HFC network upgrade

NBN Co is pushing fibre deeper into communities in selected metropolitan and regional areas of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The fibre deeper work will pass more than 100,000 premises in areas currently serviced by Fibre to the Node (FTTN) technology, effectively converting FTTN locations to FTTP. NBN Co said it will consult with Internet retailers before finalising the design for its extended fibre network.

This marks the start of NBN Co’s $4.5 billion network investment program, which aims to make nbn’s highest wholesale speed tiers available, as demand arises, to around 8 million premises – or up to 75 percent of homes and businesses on the fixed line network by 2023.


NBN Co also reports that it is making good progress on its Hybrid Fibre Cable (HFC) network upgrade program. The company now expects to offer download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps to approximately 625,000 premises, or around 25 percent of the HFC network footprint by November 2020.

Since the company launched its nbn Home Fast, nbn Home Superfast and nbn Home Ultrafast wholesale speed tiers in May 2020, 100 percent of customers connected via HFC have been able to order nbn Home Fast; approximately 70 percent have been able to order nbn Home Superfast, and approximately 7 percent of customers in the HFC footprint have been able to access the fastest residential speed tier1.

Australia's NBN turns its attention to premium business services

Australia's NBN Co announced plans to invest up to A$700 million in a multi-faceted package of initiatives over the next three years to support business innovation, productivity and growth.

NBN Co said its goal is to significantly expand the national reach for Internet retailers to offer solutions based on wholesale business nbn Enterprise Ethernet services, increasing choice and availability for businesses across the country. 

  • The creation of up to 240 nbn Business Fibre Zones across Australia, including a presence in 85 regional centres. All businesses within these zones will have access to Enterprise Ethernet, at significantly reduced wholesale prices. In total, these zones are expected to cover more than 700,000 business premises. nbn is disclosing the locations of the first 130 nbn Business Fibre Zones, including 61 in regional locations such as Bunbury, Mount Gambier, Devonport, Shepparton, Port Macquarie and Rockhampton. 
  • Businesses in nbn Business Fibre Zones will see Enterprise Ethernet pricing reduced, some by up to 67 percent, giving thousands of regional businesses access to the same support as businesses in capital city centres, at the same wholesale price. Enterprise Ethernet is NBN Co’s fastest symmetrical wholesale product and premium-grade business offering. It has options for prioritised traffic, high capacity and symmetrical upload and download wholesale speeds from 10Mbps to close to 1Gbps, as well as enhanced 24/7 support through the business nbn Operations Centre with a dedicated team located in Australia. 
  • NBN Co has allocated $50 million over three years to work with local councils and state and territory governments to identify opportunities to extend business-grade services outside designated nbn™ Business Fibre Zones.
  • When an Internet retailer places an order for Enterprise Ethernet, for an estimated 90 per cent of business premises in the national nbn network footprint, NBN Co will not charge the retailer for building the fibre. Plus, if an Internet retailer signs up for a three-year Enterprise Ethernet plan, NBN Co will not charge the retailer an up-front connection cost.

Australia's nbn suggests COVID data surge may have peaked

Data demand on Australia's nbn’s main wholesale access service this week continued to soften for a second consecutive week, but still remain significantly above pre-COVID levels.



Some metrics:

  • For the week from Monday, 17 August to Sunday, 23 August, download throughput (the measure of data flowing through the nbn network) during the busy evening period peaked at 14.8 Terabits per second (Tbps) on the main nbn wholesale service. This represented a 5.9 percent decrease on the peak of the previous week.
  • Download throughput during the same week peaked at 9.5Tbps in daytime business hours, consistent with peak download throughput observed in the previous week and at 13.4Tbps in the early evening hours, representing a decline of 5.7 percent on the peak download throughput of the previous week.
  • Peak upstream throughput on the main nbn wholesale service in the evening busy hours for the week beginning 17 August was 0.96Tbps, holding approximately steady from the previous week’s peak of 0.97Tbps. 
  • Peak upload throughput was also broadly consistent with the previous week during early evening hours, when peak upload throughput was 0.92Tbps, and daytime business hours, which experienced peak upload throughput of 0.87Tbps.
  • Compared to the pre-COVID-19 baseline before social distancing measures were implemented, downstream network usage on the nbn main wholesale service during business hours on 21 August 2020 was 59 percent higher.
  • Upstream network usage on the nbn™ main wholesale service during business hours on 21 August 2020 remained high compared to the pre-COVID-19 baseline, up 92 percent.

Australia's NBN Co adopts Infinera Transcend network automation

NBN Co, Australia’s wholesale open-access broadband provider, is deploying Infinera’s Transcend software-defined networking (SDN) solution to implement self-healing capabilities across its 60,000-kilometer fiber optic transit network.

Infinera’s SDN-based dynamic service rerouting capabilities for DWDM-based networks allow network operators to restore customer services by automatically rerouting traffic when faults occur.

NBN Co’s network enhancements are based on Infinera’s 7300 multi-haul DWDM platform with Infinera’s Transcend SDN solution spanning several transport layer technologies – such as optical DWDM layers and electrical Optical Data Unit (ODU) switching layers – to provide end-to-end service control and enable SDN-based service control for Infinera’s optical and packet-optical transport portfolio. It also offers open and standards-based RESTful northbound interfaces to provide real-time, programmable multi-layer control to higher-layer controllers and provides a foundation to introduce programmable networking and automation in the NBN Co environment.

NBN Co’s transit network is a backbone network of fiber optic cables that links hubs across Australia to the wider nbn broadband access network that connects homes and businesses. This network moves large aggregate volumes of data between locations, delivering capacity to homes and businesses. The network connects to NBN Co’s 121 points of interconnection (POIs) – typically located at telephone exchanges – which are where phone and internet providers plug their own networks into the NBN Co access network. The reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology enhancements introduced on the Infinera 7300 Series Multi-Haul Transport Platform will allow NBN Co to increase its network resiliency and reliability by introducing automatic service restoration capabilities across its transit network.

Australia's NBN Co now passes 10 million homes/businesses

Australia's NBN Co reached a major milestone: more than 10 million homes and businesses are now able to connect to the nbn access network. Less than twelve months of the build are remaining. nbn provides wholesale services to phone and internet providers.

Some additional notes:

  • As at May 2019 62 percent of homes and businesses were on a 50Mbps wholesale speed plan or higher – compared with 44 percent in May 2018.
  • There are currently more than 160 million connected devices in Australian households and almost 400 million expected by 2023, according to Telsyte’s Australian IoT@Home Market Study 2019. 25% of people say they are interested in making their homes ‘smarter’ but 35% indicate they would like help to set-up their connected services.

Australia's NBN Co deploys ADTRAN's in-ground G.fast DPUs

Australia's NBN Co will deploy ADTRAN's 2nd generation G.fast Distribution Point Units (DPUs) in the next phase of the country’s national broadband access network.

ADTRAN confirmed that it has shipped hundreds of thousands of the most advanced generation of G.fast ports for this project. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The first G.fast DPUs are being installed in the Sydney suburb of Rockdale, where the newest phase of the wholesale nbn is being built out by 2020. This is the first network in the world to deliver high speeds of broadband via in-ground G.fast DPUs, according to NBN Chief Network Engineering Officer Peter Ryan.

“ADTRAN is a valued strategic partner for nbn and has played a key role helping nbn meet our deployment goals to evolve our network,” Ryan said. “I am very pleased that we are taking this next step together on our journey of delivering cutting-edge technology to Australians with our first deployment of ADTRAN G.fast technology onto the nbn FTTC network. Having this technology in the ground today gives us additional flexibility to meet end-user demand as it evolves.”

ADTRAN notes that it was among the first to deliver G.fast solutions that conform with Amendment 3 of the ITU-T G.fast standard, which doubles the usable spectrum from 106 MHz to 212 MHz and reduces the power consumption to enable convenient and cost effective reverse power feeding. With Amendment 3, G.fast is now capable of providing an aggregated bandwidth of 2 Gbps, delivering fibre-like speeds for applications which require leveraging the existing phone or cable television wiring infrastructure. The increased capacity also helps operators with additional deployment flexibility, as for the first time G.fast-based services can be delivered to locations where these need to coexist with existing VDSL2 services while still maintaining the ability to deliver symmetric Gigabit speeds.

ADTRAN delivers 2nd gen Gfast capable of 2 Gbps

ADTRAN launched its 2nd generation Gfast products allowing for the transparent extension of FTTH service capabilities.

The company is the first to deliver Gfast solutions that conform with Amendment 3 of the ITU-T G.fast standard, which doubles the usable spectrum from previously 106 Mhz to 212 MHz. With Amendment 3, Gfast is now capable of providing an aggregated bandwidth of 2 Gbps, delivering fiber-like speeds for Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs) and other applications which require leveraging the existing phone or cable television wiring infrastructure.

ADTRAN said the increased capacity also helps operators with additional deployment flexibility, as for the first time Gfast-based services can be delivered to locations where these need to coexist with existing VDSL2 services while still maintaining the ability to deliver symmetric Gigabit speeds. The company has Gfast deployments underway with Tier 1 carrier networks in Asia, Australia, North America and Europe.

“Second generation Gfast solutions can allow operators, municipalities and regulatory agencies another delivery path to meeting the goal of delivering Gigabit speeds to consumers,” IHS Markit Principal Analyst, Service Provider Technology, John Kendall said. “The current Gfast market is set for strong growth as leading service providers are ramping deployments as a natural extension of their fiber investment strategies and Gigabit service rollout plans.”
