LG pulls out of MWC2020

LG Electronics has decided to skip Mobile World Congress later this month in Barcelona due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus. LG said it made the decision "with the safety of its employees, partners and customers foremost in mind."

In addition, The Verge reported that ZTE will cancel its planned press conference at the event.

Koo Bon-moo, chairman of LG Corporation, passes away

Koo Bon-moo, the chairman of LG Corporation, the fourth largest industrial group in Korea, has passed away. He was 73 and had been ill for about a year. Koo served as chairman since 1995. Under his helm, the global sales of appliances, displays, smartphones and batteries skyrocketed. The company changed its brand identity from Lucky Goldstar to LG. It also divested its semiconductor business (now SK Hynix), and it established a telecom division. 

Koo Kwang-mo (40), a senior official in LG Electronics and the adopted son of Koo Bon-moo, will take over the role of chairman. The Koo family and its charitable foundation are believed to control about 47% of the corporation.

Vodafone and LG UPlus partner to address South Korea market

Vodafone and LG UPlus have jointly announced a new partner market agreement covering South Korea, marking the first strategic partnership by LG Uplus with a global telecoms company.

Under the new partnership, which commenced in April 2017, Vodafone will leverage its global reach and expertise to support the consumer and enterprise operations of LG Uplus in South Korea. As part of the agreement, Vodafone will share best practices with LG Uplus across all areas of its business, including network strategy and development, with the aim of helping LG Uplus to improve its customer base management capabilities.

Vodafone and LG Uplus will additionally cooperate to enable the delivery of unified communications and enterprise services to multinational companies with a presence in South Korea and internationally.

LG Uplus is focused on providing services comprising mobile, B2B solutions and TPS (triple play service, with broadband, VoIP and IPTV), and at the end of the first quarter of 2017 served approximately 12.6 million mobile subscribers and 3.67 million broadband customers.

Vodafone Group is a global telco with mobile operations in 26 countries, partners with mobile networks in a further 49 countries and fixed broadband operations in 17 markets. At the end of March, Vodafone Group had 515.7 million mobile customers and 17.9 million fixed broadband customers, including India and all of the customers for its joint ventures and associate companies.


In April this year, Vodafone and Proximus of Belgium the renewal of their strategic partnership covering Belgium and Luxembourg for a further five years, building on a relationship that began in 2003. The agreement is designed to enable the companies to offer joint products and services across their networks for consumer and enterprise customers.

LG Launches LTE-Connected Android Smart Watch

LG is launching the first Android Wear smartwatch to feature cellular connectivity

The LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE, which begins shipping this month in the United States and Korea, allows users to answer calls and check messages. They can receive and respond right from their smartwatch, even when they are not carrying their mobile phone.  It features a hairline-etched stainless steel body and a full-circle 348ppi P-OLED display. The three buttons on the right side of the smartwatch provide quick access to shortcut settings, LG Health and other apps.

AT&T will be offering the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE in its store on Nov. 13.  The new Watch Urbane is also available for pre-order online from Verizon.

LG's Flagship G2 Smartphone Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800

LG unveiled its new flagship smartphone -- the G2, featuring a 5.2-inch Full HD display, energy efficient graphic RAM (GRAM) technology and a unique design that places all buttons on the rear of the device.

The LG G2 runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Processor with 2GB of RAM and support for LTE-Advanced. The LG G2's 13 megapixel camera offers Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) technology and multi-point autofocus.

LG is also promoting a number of user experience features:

  • Answer Me — Automatically answers the call after lowering the ringtone when the phone is raised to one's ear.
  • Plug & Pop — Recommends options or related features to choose from when the earphone or USB cable is detected.
  • Text Link — Allows information embedded in text messages to be selected and easily saved in a memo or calendar and searched on a map or the internet.
  • QuickRemote — LG G2 be used to remotely control popular home entertainment devices
  • Slide Aside — Enables easier multitasking by simply "sliding" open apps off to the side using a three-finger swipe.
  • Guest Mode — Protects owner's privacy by displaying only pre-selected apps when guests access the phone with a secondary unlock pattern.

The LG G2 will be rolled out in over 130 wireless carriers in the next eight weeks.
