Itential and Kaloom aim for automated 5G network slicing

Itential announced a partnership with Kaloom targetting the ability to integrate, automate, and deploy 5G network slicing intelligence. Customers will become better equipped to unlock the monetization of 5G through automation, network slicing, and virtualized network fabrics connected to the cloud.

Kaloom’s Cloud Edge Fabric solution disrupts the technical, operational, and economics of how distributed cloud edge and data centers are built and managed. With an embedded 5G user plane function (UPF), Kaloom’s solution enables the virtualization of network fabric needed for telecom providers to communicate within the larger network environment.

Itential simplifies and accelerates the deployment and automation of multi-domain, multi-vendor network infrastructures. The Itential Automation Platform is a low-code, cloud-native solution that seamlessly connects to any IT system, cloud, or network technology for end-to-end automation of any network use case, making it an ideal solution for automating and orchestrating advanced capabilities like 5G Mobile Edge Compute (MEC) creation and 5G network slicing.

Itential and Kaloom will also collaborate to enable configuration of InterPlanetary File Systems (IPFS) inside of the mobile core network to increase access for delivering mobile traffic. Mobile gateways are the cornerstone of the wireless network. The need for systems to run within data centers makes Kaloom’s added functionalities essential, as they include replication in a smaller virtualization of the network and its components.

“For operators to extract returns on their massive 5G investments, they need the means to offer and charge for differentiated services,” said Roy Chua, Principal at AvidThink, a research and analyst firm. “However, many operators worldwide are struggling to put together the underlying end-to-end infrastructure that can power these offerings. Kaloom and Itential’s partnership couples an agile network automation solution with a flexible network fabric, enabling network operators to bring such services to market much faster.”

“We are excited to be working closesly with Itential on a shared mission to enable telecom providers for 5G networking orchestration,” said Suresh Krishnan, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Kaloom. ”We have a strong alignment in terms of our views of the modern network and how it should be managed. Partnering with Itential to create new functionalities allows us to offer the differentiation needed for leading our customers into the future.”

Itential and Kaloom will be discussing the integration in more detail during Itential’s live-streamed webinar scheduled for June 8, 2021 at 12 p.m. ET. The webinar, Cloud to Core to Edge: Making 5G Network Slicing a Reality will feature a product demonstration and plans for 5G rollouts, honing in on end-to-end customer solutions for multi-customer network slicing. Other speakers at the webinar include leading executives from Equinix and AvidThink.

Next-Gen Network Automation - Advancing through Software

To advance network automation, organizations need to move from manual, human-centric command line interfaces (CLIs) to machine-driven automation. Chris Wade, Co-founder and CTO of Itential, talks about the critical issues associated with network automation and why it’s time to treat the network as code. By taking a software-centric approach, organizations can integrate across multiple domains for end-to-end network automation.

Itential launches API services for network automation

Itential launched new API Services that enable organizations to implement NetDevOps concepts and move toward Network Infrastructure as Code.

Itential said its solution was designed for DevOps and NetOps teams to accelerate the move toward software-driven networks through automation and agile network operations.  NetDevOps allows organizations to adopt CI/CD pipelines with the ability to build, test, validate and deploy changes before they are made to the network.

Itential’s NetOps pipeline capabilities include:

  • Build – Create the building blocks of your infrastructure
  • Dynamically render configurations from a library of expert built templates that combine reusable chunks of configuration to create composite configurations. Transform data from one format into another and run optimizers to eliminate redundant or poorly designed config.
  • Test – Ensure your infrastructure change does what you intend it to do
  • Simulate the change before you make it and compare simulation outputs to known desired outcomes. Check to see if your change affects any pre-existing functionality.
  • Validate – Ensure that your changes are safe
  • Check that a configuration is error free, before you deploy it to a device. Run a security scan to see if you’re running compromised software and run a security scan to see if you’re exposed to network threats.
  • Deploy – Deploy your infrastructure changes to your network
  • Leverage tools like Ansible, Terraform, SDN Controllers, and Orchestrators to push changes to your network. Update operational support systems to stay in sync with your network changes and keep track of your changes by tagging and versioning them when you deploy.

“The complexity of today’s networks, combined with the lack of investment in modern application concepts, has created a situation where network management applications are constraining the ability to support business and consumer demands,” said Chris Wade, CTO, Itential. “By incorporating a Network Infrastructure as Code approach to automation, enterprises can use Itential’s modern agile software development principles to build, test, validate, and deploy network changes and adopt existing investments in the infrastructure as code ecosystem.”

Itential introduces enterprise Automation Gateway application

Itential announced Automation Gateway, a purpose-built application for enterprise network automation and network programmability.

Itential said its Automation Gateway leverages existing investments in network configuration tools and network change scripts to propel network automation projects. Key capabilities include :

  • Out of the box support for all types of scripts from Python, C, Bash, Perl, and Ansible Playbooks; providing an integrated and centralized view of all automation efforts for use within the Itential Automation Platform.
  • Dynamic discovery of scripts, providing a centralized and globally available repository within the Itential Automation Platform for enabling script execution in automation workflows via defined group-based access controls for end-to-end network automation.
  • The ability to ‘decorate’ or enhance scrips to enable and enforce consistent schema definitions and normalize scripts for standardized and repeatable API consumption, further driving network programmability.

Additionally, Itential’s latest release includes advanced event-driven automation capabilities for performing closed-loop activities. Itential’s event-driven automation capabilities can trigger automation task based upon notifications from several event systems such as Kafka or NETCONF, ensuring constant network configuration, assurance and compliance and automatically remediating known issues without the need for manual interaction. Itential’s closed-loop automation capabilities simplify network troubleshooting and eliminate common manual errors, further increasing network agility.
