Cisco Expands its Intercloud Ecosystem

Cisco announced major milestones and next steps for its Intercloud initiative -- a globally connected network of clouds -- saying that it now has 65 partners running Intercloud Fabric in over 350 data centers.  The aim of Cisco Intercloud is to reduce complexity out of hybrid clouds.

Some Intercloud highlights:

  • Recent enhancements to Cisco Intercloud are focused in the areas of security, control, and expanded hypervisor support, including OpenStack, KVM and Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Cisco has signed up 35 independent software vendors (ISVs) to accelerate the creation of innovative cloud services for the Intercloud.
  • At Cisco Live!, 10 Intercloud partners—Cirrity, Datalink, iland, Long View, Peak 10, Presidio, QTS, Quest, Sungard Availability Services and Virtustream—announced new hybrid cloud services built on Cisco Intercloud Fabric. Cisco also announced that KPIT Technologies, Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, and the Salvation Army are using Cisco Intercloud Fabric to implement a single operational model across dev/test, quality assurance and production environments.
  • Cisco is planning to open an Intercloud Marketplace —- a partner-centric global storefront for Intercloud-based applications and cloud services from Cisco and partners. The first wave of new Cisco Intercloud Marketplace application developers and service partners include: ActiveState, Apprenda, Basho, Chef, Citrix, CliQr, Cloud Enabled, CloudBerry Lab, Cloudera, Cloudify, CloudLink, Couchbase, CTERA, Datadog, Davra Networks, desktopsites, Druva, Egnyte, ElasticBox, F5 Networks, Hortonworks, Informatica, MapR, MongoDB, Moonwalk, Nirmata, Panzura, Pegasystems, Platfora, Sanovi, ScaleArc, Skytree, StoAmigo, Talisen Technologies and Zenoss. Intercloud Marketplace launch is targeted for fall of 2015.  
  • Cisco is expanding its participation in leading open source developer communities like Cloud Foundry, OpenShift and Kubernetes. To help developers to build container-based micro-services, Cisco is building an integrated toolset for continuous integration and deployment. By providing developers with access to the latest APIs and micro-services across all Cisco cloud, IoE and big data technologies delivered through the Intercloud, Cisco is extending its focus on embracing and enabling its developer community via its DevNet initiative.
  • Cisco Intercloud Fabric now extends its zone-based firewall services to support Microsoft Azure. Cisco Intercloud Fabric Firewall solves the problem of securing traffic between virtual machines without redirecting this traffic to the edge firewall for lookup by including a zone-based firewall, the Cisco Virtual Security Gateway (VSG). With VSG support in Cisco Intercloud Fabric, customers who use the VSG for the Cisco Nexus® 1000V Series Switch in their enterprise data center can extend the same policies to the VSG instance in the public cloud. This allows them to have consistent firewall policies across their entire hybrid cloud infrastructure.
  • Cisco is now extending its VM onboarding to support Amazon VPC.  Cisco Intercloud Fabric is designed to make the onramp to hybrid cloud easier. Its VM onboarding capabilities allows businesses to easily extend management to VMs already deployed in a public cloud by identifying pre-existing target VMs and moving them under Intercloud Facric control.
  • Cisco Intercloud Fabric now supports OpenStack, KVM and Microsoft Hyper-V. A business' ability to choose the right cloud for the right workload should not be limited by the underlying infrastructure or in this case, the hypervisor. Business requirements do not care which hypervisor a public cloud uses. Operational models are better served if all public clouds are treated the same. With support for VMware vSphere, OpenStack KVM, and Microsoft Hyper-V, Cisco Intercloud Fabric now supports the vast majority of hypervisor deployments.

Cisco's Intercloud Expands Reach

Cisco has formed Intercloud partnerships with Deutsche Telekom, BT, Equinix, NTT Data and over 30 additional companies, demonstrating significant momentum behind its strategy to bring programmable networking to the interconnection of private and public clouds.

Cisco now aims to bring its Intercloud fabric into 250 of the top co-location data centers worldwide in the coming months, significantly advancing its goal of making Intercloud the leading architecture and ecosystem for exchanging cloud traffic. The company will dedicate $1 billion from its financing division to accelerate these key rollouts.

Intercloud, which Cisco first announced in March 2014, is a distributed network and security architecture designed for interconnecting high-value application workloads between clouds while retaining high security and local data sovereignty.  Intercloud uses APIs to connect cloud IT services across a data center network It supports OpenStack and multiple hypervisors. It is based on Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI).

At a press event in Silicon Valley, Rob Lloyd, Cisco's president of development and sales, described Intercloud as "the phase of the Internet," saying the challenge of interconnecting today public and private clouds in many ways resembles the challenges of the early Internet.

“Just as Cisco played a leading role in connecting isolated islands of LANs to architect the modern Internet, Cisco’s Intercloud Fabric and Application Centric Infrastructure innovations uniquely position us to connect disparate cloud services to unlock the full potential of cloud, and with it a new era in IT,” said Lloyd.

Some highlights:

  • Deutsche Telekom plans to deploy Intercloud nodes within its state-of-the-art data centers in Germany. The DT Intercloud will be operated by T-Systems to deliver sovereign and secure Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offerings that meet Germany’s strict data protection standards.  Deutsche Telekom’s new Intercloud infrastructure, based on OpenStack to allow DT to standardize and scale their services globally, will incorporate Cisco’s suite of cloud solutions, including Cisco Intercloud Fabric and Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), which includes Cisco Nexus 9000 Series switches  and the Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC).
     
  • BT will deploy Cisco Intercloud Fabric in its 45 data centers worldwide. BT will become fully Intercloud enabled to support highly secure, global hybrid clouds with unparalleled workload portability for BT’s customers.  BT Cloud Compute is a pre-provisioned data center infrastructure that enables customers to create, deploy, monitor and manage their own cloud service. It integrates advanced Cisco technologies and is available in major economies across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa and Asia Pacific.
  • Cisco will offer its own Intercloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) in its own data centers and with its own switches and UCS servers.  Cisco will also offer its own cloud services based on the Intercloud architecture.
  • Equinix will deploy the Cisco Intercloud, including the Cisco Nexus 9000 Series switch, Cisco APIC, and the Cisco Evolved Services Platform, for the Equinix Cloud Exchange, which is available in major markets worldwide. The companies plan to develop a hosted private cloud solution that utilizes the Equinix Cloud Exchange to deliver highly secure private access to the rich ecosystem of cloud service providers in Equinix data centers globally. Cisco plans to deploy Intercloud capabilities in 16 Equinix markets across Europe, Asia and the Americas.
  • Cisco will use its Meraki platform to help Service Providers offer secure cloud VPNs to SMBs.
  • Other announced Intercloud partners include ANS Group, CGI Group, Cirrity, CTI, Dimension Data, Ethan Group, Infront Systems, LightEdge Solutions, LG CNS, Logicalis, Long View, Netelligent, NWN, NetApp, NTT DATA, OneNeck IT Solutions, OnX Managed Services, Peak 10, Presidio, Proxios, PT Portugal/Oi, Quest Media and Supplies, RedHat, Steria, Sungard, Telstra, VCE, Virtustream and Wipro.
  • Comstor, Ingram Micro Inc. and Tech Data will become cloud aggregators for Cisco.
  • Cisco Intercloud Fabric has now been officially released to customers.
  • Cisco Capital has earmarked $1 billion to accelerate rollout of these solutions.

  • In November 2013, Cisco unveiled its Application Centric Infrastructure for data centers and clouds. In a press event in New York, John Chambers described ACI as the next big transformation of the IT industry driven by imperatives of the application economy.

    ACI is a step beyond virtualization and software-defined networks (SDN), said Chambers, because it brings agility and automation with full visibility and integrated management of both physical and virtual networked IT resources at the system, tenant, and application levels.  The architecture promises a pay-as-you-grow mode scaling to over 100,000 switch ports and capable of supporting more than one million IP end points in a data center spine with 60 Tbps capacity.  A key premise is that the network should adapt to application requirements through dynamic insertion and chaining of physical and virtual L4-7 network services including firewalls, application delivery controllers, and intrusion detection systems.  The new architecture is designed for multi-tenant cloud environments by providing real-time view of per tenant and per application health, statistics, and troubleshooting.  Real-time analytics will be used to drive intelligent application placement decisions.
    The foundation for ACI is an Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC), enhanced versions of the NX-OS data center switching operating system, and a new line of Nexus 9000 data center switches based on technology from Insieme Networks, the Cisco spin-in start-up that is being acquired and re-integrated into the company.

Huawei and 21Vianet Build China”s Largest Commercial SDN

21Vianet, the largest carrier-neutral Internet Data Center provider in China , is preparing to launch the largest to launch commercial SDN in China to enable the management of cloud services in its facilities. Huawei is the supplier.

Specifically, 21Vianet deployed Huawei's Cloud Fabric Data Center Network Solution that mainly uses the CE12800 series data center switches and Agile Controller.  Initial deployment is at eight large-scale data centers in China located in major cities like Beijing , Guangzhou , Nanjing and Wuhan . These data centers support the company's services throughout China and combine to be the country's largest commercial SDN data center network. In the next phase, 21Vianet will expand the deployment of the SDN-enabled solution to more than 80 large-scale data centers in over 40 cities.

Huawei said its Open Programmability System shortens 21Vianet's new service innovation period from six months to only one month. In addition, the solution's automatic path adjustment and optimization function increased the efficiency of link bandwidth utilization from 50 percent to 80 percent.

"21Vianet's goal is to become one of the most respected Chinese companies in the Internet infrastructure sector. 21Vianet's SDN-enabled network is an example of the successful commercial application of an SDN network in China ," said Mike Ma , Vice President, 21Vianet. "We are pleased to be partnering with Huawei to explore the use of SDN technology for data centers and the commercialization of solutions developed by our joint innovation initiatives. In March 2014, Microsoft Azure is now commercially available in China. The service is delivered by 21Vianet from multiple locations in China to enable critical disaster recovery scenarios.

21Vianet has already provides cloud services to more than 3,000 customers in China, including CNTV, LineKong, GMW.cn and Coca-Cola China.

Microsoft said this launch is significant because Microsoft has now become the first global company to make onshore public cloud services available to customers in China.

In December 2013, IBM announced a partnership with 21Vianet Group, a carrier-neutral Internet data center operator in China, to introduce a private cloud service in China.  IBM will provide the physical point of distribution (POD) and service while 21Vianet will host the POD facility at 21Vianet data center in Beijing.

Cisco Names Intercloud Partners: Dimension Data, Sungard, Telstra

Cisco announced partnerships with Dimension Data (part of NTT, Sungard Availability Services and Telstra to extend its vision of the Intercloud.  The partners will align their public cloud infrastructure to the Cisco Cloud architecture and deliver Cisco Cloud services to customers and resellers.

Cisco's open Intercloud allows local hosting and local provider options that enable data sovereignty. The hybrid cloud capabilities that differentiate the Cisco Cloud are built upon the Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) and Cisco Intercloud Fabric technologies.

Some highlights of the partnerships

The deal with Dimension Data expands a 23-year relationship. Cisco will use Dimension Data's Managed Cloud Platform and SaaS solutions to deliver a suite of midmarket cloud services to its customers and resellers. Dimension Data and Cisco will partner to deliver an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) solution that will be packaged with Cisco technology and software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications, including Microsoft SQL Server and SharePoint. The Cisco validated and co-branded solutions will be sold by Cisco through the Cisco channel partner community. Dimension Data's global cloud service is available via 10 data centers around the world, with plans to expand to 13 locations by September 2014. As a Cisco Intercloud partner, Dimension Data will evolve its Managed Cloud Platform to embrace Cisco ACI and Intercloud Fabric — the building blocks of the Cisco Cloud architecture

Sungard Availability Services is a Cisco Intercloud partner, utilizing its cloud infrastructure to deliver new Cisco Cloud services to customers and resellers. As a Cisco Intercloud partner, Sungard AS is expanding its cloud infrastructure utilizing the foundational elements of the Cisco Cloud architecture, including Cisco ACI. Sungard AS is poised to become the first cloud provider to market with a Cisco ACI-based public cloud offer built on an application-centric cloud architecture. Cisco will feature two cloud services from Sungard AS in its service catalog: an IaaS offering that enables customers to rapidly deploy hybrid clouds; and a disaster recovery-as-a-service offering to deliver business continuity.

Telstra said it will build a cloud infrastructure together with Cisco that provisions cloud and network services in real-time, providing greater speed, security and performance.   This includes investing in the Cisco Evolved Services Platform for its networking infrastructure, enabling seamless and highly secure delivery of cloud applications to customers, across the network and cloud, all the way to the branch and user desktop. Telstra’s cloud offerings based on Cisco’s global cloud platform will be available in Australia by the end of 2014.


In March, Cisco announced plans to build "the world’s largest global Intercloud" – a network of clouds – together with a set of partners.  The idea is to leverage a distributed network and security architecture designed for high-value application workloads, real-time analytics, “near infinite” scalability and full compliance with local data sovereignty laws. Cisco's open Intercloud promises APIs for rapid application development and a new enterprise-class portfolio of cloud IT services for businesses, service providers and resellers. It will support OpenStack and multiple hypervisors. It will also leverage Cisco's recently announced Application Centric Infrastructure.

Cisco plans to invest over $1 billion to build its expanded cloud business over the next two years following a "partner-centric" business model.  The Cisco Intercloud will be hosted across a global network of Cisco data centers and partner data centers. It will offer value-added application- and network-centric cloud services to accelerate the Internet of Everything.
