Hungary's new autonomous vehicle test track offers 5G

A newly-opened test track in Hungary for autonomous vehicles features Ericsson 5G technology installed on an existing radio tower owned by Magyar Telekom.

The ZalaZone track provides car manufacturers in Europe with a 2-kilometer handling course that includes a multi-surface braking platform and multiple test track modules for everything from highway roads to bad rural roads and a water basin.

The 5G infrastructure provides high-capacity and low-latency connectivity for test vehicles.

At the official opening of ZalaZone, attended by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the country’s Minister for Innovation and Technology László Palkovics, attendees were shown demos of self-driving cars using the 5G mobile network for the first time in Hungary.

Hungary's national power utility deploys ADVA's fiber monitoring

HEP Telekomunikacije (part of HEP Group), which manages the telecommunication infrastructure and telecommunication systems of Hungary's national energy utility,  has deployed ADVA's ALM fiber monitoring technology to provide precise, real-time insight into its access, metro and core networks.

ADVA's solution is being used to assure both HEP Telekomunikacije’s legacy SDH network and its high-performance WDM infrastructure built on the ADVA FSP 3000. Specifically, the ADVA ALM delivers detailed visibility of HEP Telekomunikacije fiber infrastructure, empowering its maintenance team to easily and precisely pinpoint faults or areas of degradation.

ADVA’s regional partner ITeRATIO played a key role in the project.

“What this deployment gives us is the power to react quickly to any issues. Whether it’s monitoring displacement in our underground infrastructure or detecting damage to OPGW aerial fiber, the ADVA ALM enables us to take rapid and effective action,” said Davor Rakoš, head of network construction and development, HEP Telekomunikacije.

“This simple, compact device offers several key advantages for utility network assurance. It operates without a fan and consumes very little energy. It’s also a highly robust solution ready to be installed virtually anywhere. What’s more, the ADVA ALM is fully interoperable with our existing network management solution, including our Netcool/OMNIbus supervisory system.”

DT opens European Smart Solutions Center in Budapest

Deutsche Telekom company has established a European Smart Solutions Center (ESC), based in Budapest with the goal of consolidating its smart city expertise and activities across the Deutsche Telekom Group.

DT is looking to promote smart city solutions to municipalities in Europe. The new center covers central functions such as marketing, partnering, pre-sales and delivery governance, and works closely with local smart city sales & delivery experts. The center also offers a unique competence in consulting cities to utilize funds for urban development, allocated by the European Union.

DT noted that the European Commission has allocated a budget of 120 million euro to promote free access to wireless connectivity in public places across Europe such as parks, squares public buildings, libraries, health centers and museums. DT is working with Cisco on a package for cities to implement a tailor-made, secure and user-friendly WiFi4EU solution.

Ericsson Opens 5G Garage in Budapest

Ericsson opened at 5G "Garage" within its R&D facility in Budapest, Hungary to served as an incubator for the 5G ecosystem.

5G for Hungary is part of the recently launched "5G for Europe" program, which will deliver industry pilots of 5G solutions in areas including the Internet of Things, energy and utilities, safety and security, public infrastructure and retail. It will include joint innovation and prototyping as well as demos to operators and enterprises.

Ericsson said these initiatives also support the recently launched “5G Exchange” (5GEx) collaborative innovation project co-funded by the European Commission and that is driven by the Ericsson Research team in Budapest.

Ericsson Expands 5G R&D Program in Europe

Ericsson is expanding its cross-industry 5G research and development (R&D) program in Europe, aiming to bring together major industrial players, the public sector and leading universities across Europe to strengthen the continent's competitiveness and maximize the benefits of the Networked Society.

The 5G for Europe program will focus on delivering research, innovation and industrial pilots that use next-generation 5G networks as an enabler. One of the goals is to deliver industry pilots of possible 5G solutions in areas including transport and automotive, the Internet of Things, utilities, public safety, public infrastructure and retail.

The program's academic and research partners include major technical universities such as Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy, Technische Universität Dresden, Germany, Universidad Carlos III of Madrid, Spain, IMDEA Networks Institute, Madrid, Spain, and King's College, London, United Kingdom. Among the industry partners are leading enterprises such as wiseSense, Weiss Robotics and MyOmega System Technology in Germany and Zucchetti Centro Sistemi in Italy.

Ulf Ewaldsson, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Ericsson, says: "5G is the next step in the evolution of mobile communication and will be a fundamental enabler of the Networked Society.
