Broadcom pushes ahead with Gen 7 64Gb/s Fibre Channel

Broadcom released the first Gen 7 64Gb/s Fibre Channel switching platforms and the first 64Gb/s Fibre Channel optical transceiver.

The solutions are currently being qualified for use in Brocade switches and Emulex adapters, for end-to-end Gen 7 Fibre Channel performance.

“Broadcom continues to lead the market and drive innovation with the launch of the industry’s first end-to-end Gen 7 Fibre Channel portfolio,” said Jack Rondoni, senior vice president and general manager, Brocade Storage Networking division, Broadcom. “Brocade Gen 7 harnesses the power of 64Gb/s switching technology and transforms current storage networks with autonomous SAN capabilities, simplifying management, and significantly reducing operational costs.”

Brocade said its Gen 7 Fibre Channel being 64Gb/s line-rate speed along with a 50 percent reduction in latency. Brocade Gen 7 also introduces a range of autonomous technologies to simplify and automate management. The self-optimizing capability utilizes actionable intelligence to automate network management and maximize performance. Learning traffic behavior enables the network to make smarter decisions on traffic prioritization, congestion management and notification to ensure optimal network performance for applications and storage.

Russia's Bank Otkritie deploys ADVA for 32G Fibre Channel

Russia's Bank Otkritie has deployed ADVA's FSP 3000 to enable 32Gbit/s Fibre Channel as well as 40 and 100Gbit/s Ethernet services.

One of Russia's largest commercial financial companies, Bank Otkritie is the first bank in the country to leverage Gen 6 Fibre Channel technology.

ADVA partners with Brocade on 32G Fibre Channel over 100 km

ADVA Optical Networking announced that it has demonstrated transmission of 32 Gbit/s Fibre Channel over 100 km, which is claimed as an industry first, during a joint field trial that utilised Brocade X6 directors and the ADVA FSP 3000 CloudConnect platform.

The trial was designed to illustrate the ability of ADVA's data centre interconnect (DCI) technology to interoperate seamlessly with Brocade Gen 6 Fibre Channel products. The joint solution will enable enterprise customers to address the demand for higher speed transmission in the data centre, as well as support the transition to flash-based storage solutions.

The combination of Brocade's newly introduced Gen 6 Fibre Channel technology and the ADVA FSP 3000 CloudConnect platform is designed to offer customers increased performance, availability and scalability.

ADVA noted that transmission of 32 Gbit/s Fibre Channel over 100 km represents a key capability for business continuity and disaster recovery planning. As companies move towards a low-cost, high-performance storage model, they require networks that can deliver low-latency and high-capacity bandwidth together with high reliability. This demonstration of 32Gbit/s Fibre Channel connectivity shows that networks can now maximize the performance of flash array technology.

Brocade announced in March the launch of its G610 storage switch as part of the Gen 6 Fibre Channel portfolio that support 32 Gbit/s performance and designed to provide always-on connectivity to the all-flash data centre. The company noted that the transition to flash storage and the emergence of non-volatile memory express (NVMe) requires infrastructure that can optimise application performance and adapt to evolving data centre needs.

The Brocade G610 is an entry-level switch designed for applications ranging from small shared storage fabrics to network edge deployments in data centres. The switch is scalable, offering support for from eight ports up to 24 ports, and features Fabric Vision technology with newly introduced VM Insight functionality providing visibility into VM-level application performance.

Regarding the joint demonstration, Scott Shimomura, senior director, product marketing, Storage Networking at Brocade, said, "A seismic shift is taking place as organisations move from legacy storage to all-flash arrays… but a lack of fast, responsive and reliable connectivity can be a roadblock… the Brocade Gen 6 Fibre Channel portfolio and ADVA FSP 3000 CloudConnect enable the reliable, low-latency Fibre Channel storage networks that data centres need to (support) flash storage".

Broadcom Samples NVMe over Fibre Channel

Broadcom announced sampling of its Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) over Fibre Channel solution on its Emulex Gen 6 Host Bus Adapters- a first for the industry.

The NVMe over Fibre Channel solution delivers 55% lower latency when used with NVMe drives compared to SCSI drives and a 28% performance advantage versus Ethernet solutions.

Broadcom said its NVMe over Fibre Channel builds on the performance improvements delivered by Emulex Gen 6 HBAs, which cuts latency in half versus the previous generation.  The combination of Emulex Gen 6 with NVMe over Fibre Channel delivers an even greater reduction of 75% in latency versus legacy 8Gb Fibre Channel storage networks.

“NVMe over Fabrics is going to fundamentally change datacenter architectures over the next few years,” said Jeff Hoogenboom, vice president and general manager, Emulex Connectivity Division, Broadcom Limited. “Fibre Channel will play a pivotal role in NVMe deployments because it delivers a superior connectivity solution by providing better performance, lossless and reliable networking with no dropped packets, and it’s incredibly easy to deploy.”

QLogic and Brocade Demo NVMe Over Fabrics with Fibre Channel

QLogic and Brocade demonstrated a Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) over Fabrics solution using Fibre Channel as the fabric.

The demonstration, which is an industry first, is based on the draft specification of NVMe over Fabrics under definition by the NVM Express, Inc. organization and the draft Fibre Channel over NVMe (FC-NVMe) standards under definition by T11.

The companies said this FC-NVMe proof of concept (POC) sets a foundation for lower latency and increased performance, while providing improved fabric integration for flash-based storage.

NVMe provides a standards-based approach for PCI Express (PCIe) solid state drive (SSD) access that significantly improves performance by reducing latency and streamlining the command set while providing support for security and end-to-end data protection. NVMe over Fabrics defines an efficient mechanism to utilize these devices in large scale storage deployments and provides investment protection by allowing the latest in innovations and advances in low latency SSD flash to be used over proven Fibre Channel fabrics. This enables the NVMe storage devices to be shared, pooled and managed more effectively.

Avago to Acquire Emulex for Connectivity and Visibility Solutions

Avago Technologies agreed to acquire Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX) for approximately $606 million in cash.

Emulex, which is based in Costa Mesa, California, is a supplier of network connectivity, monitoring and management solutions. The Emulex portfolio includes Fibre Channel and 10GbE network connectivity that are designed into server and storage solutions from leading OEMs and ODMs worldwide. Through its Endace division, Emulex supplies network monitoring/visibility/recording.

"Emulex's connectivity business fits very well with Avago's existing portfolio serving the enterprise storage end market," stated Hock Tan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Avago. "We are excited to welcome the Emulex team to Avago."

Crehan: Data Center Switching Market Hits New Phase

2014 should be a year of major transition for Infiniband, Fibre Channel and Ethernet data center switch technologies, according to Crehan Research.

Crehan's most recently published Data Center Switch Long-Range Forecast Report, predicts that each technology will surpass its incumbent, becoming the majority of its respective segment on an annual basis:

  • In Infiniband, 56Gbps FDR will overtake 40Gbps QDR to comprise more than 50% of shipments.
  • In Fibre Channel, 16Gbps will exceed 8Gbps to comprise more than 50% of shipments.
  • In Ethernet, 10 Gigabit will outstrip 1 Gigabit to comprise more than 50% of shipments.

“10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) is finally on the verge of becoming the most popular data center switch port connection, after a long and sometimes rocky adoption curve,” said Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research. “And as 40GbE starts to ramp, we are still forecasting its adoption curve to look much better than that of 10GbE. This is already evidenced by the fact that recent data center switch introductions are really pushing the envelope on 40GbE port densities and economics,” he added.

In its year-ago Data Center Switch Long-Range Forecast Report (January 2013), Crehan illustrated that 40GbE would comprise close to one-third of all data center switch shipments by 2017, and this latest forecast maintains the same outlook. In Fibre Channel, the report further shows that despite a more gradual ramp than that seen for 8Gbps, 16Gbps Fibre Channel adoption is picking up steam. Crehan predicts that it will become the majority Fibre Channel switch technology by 2014.

"In the Infiniband switch market, 56Gbps FDR is well on its way to becoming the next de facto high-speed interconnect, setting the foundation for upgrades to the forthcoming 100Gbps EDR products."
