Semtech expands its EPON portfolio

Semtech introduced a combo chip and a multi-rate burst mode Transimpedance Amplifier (TIA) for 10G EPON Optical Line Terminals (OLTs).

“The upsurge in the 10G EPON market is expected to continue and we believe these products will help drive this growth,” said Dr. Timothy Vang, Vice President of Marketing and Applications for Semtech’s Signal Integrity Products Group. “Our engineering team has produced another unique chipset that delivers higher performance and enables lower manufacturing costs through further integration.”

The combo chip is a fully bidirectional device that supports both 1G and 10G EPON. The transmit data path features Semtech’s 10G EML driver with ClearEdge CDR referenceless technology to effectively reset the path jitter budget. Tx path optimization can be accomplished via an I2C programmable PLL loop bandwidth control and a variety of jitter filter modes. The EML driver includes eye-shaping features and an automatic power control loop to deliver best-in-class transmit eye quality. The burst mode receive data path includes two separate limiting amplifiers, one for 1G EPON and the other for 10G EPON with a fast Burst Mode Signal Detect function. The Rx path outputs 10G data at CML levels, while the 1G Rx output is available at CML or LVPECL levels depending on the device version.

Semtech’s high sensitivity Burst Mode TIA is designed for 10G EPON OLT applications. The device features a fast automatic gain control loop to enable high dynamic range in burst mode applications. The GN7056 is offered in die form, supports industrial temperature range and uses a single 3.3V power supply.

ADTRAN intros 10G-EPON virtual Remote-OLTs

ADTRAN introduced environmentally sealed, 10G-EPON virtual Remote-OLTs (virtual R-OLTs) that provide cable MSOs the ability to further execute on their 10Gbps FTTH and SD-Access strategies, while seamlessly integrating into existing DOCSIS back office provisioning and operational systems.

The new virtual R-OLTs support DOCSIS provisioning of EPON (DPoETM), native SDN integration and remote outside plant packaging, enabling MSOs to capitalize on evolving distributed access architecture (DAA) deployments as they leverage next-generation FTTH to enhance support for high-bandwidth services.

ADTRAN said its OLTs bridge the management horizon with support of both DPoE management and modern SDN control protocols allowing MSOs to effectively execute over time their transition to virtualized, managed and orchestrated SD-Access service architectures.

“ADTRAN’s market leadership in outside plant (OSP) product design has enabled us to successfully deploy hundreds of thousands of remote FTTx systems in many of the world’s harshest environments,” said Hossam Salib, vice president of cable and wireless strategy at ADTRAN. “Combining this unique OSP experience with our field-proven, fully standards-compliant DPoETM solution and our SD-Access leadership uniquely qualify ADTRAN to meet the requirements of a range of evolving DAA strategies.”

NEC partners with K-Opticom to trial vCPE over 10G EPON Internet connections

NEC and Netcracker Technology announced that they have conducted a successful trial in partnership with K-Opticom of Japan of a system combining network functions virtualisation (NFV) and 10 Gigabit Ethernet PON (EPON) technologies.

The companies claim that the trial verified for the first time that virtualised CPE (vCPE) can be successfully operated over 10 Gbit/s Internet connections.

K-Opticom is a provider of telecommunications services in the Kansai region of Japan based on its own fibre network, serving over 1.5 million residential subscribers. The company specifically offers the mineo mobile service through a MVNO arrangement and the eo denki electric power retailing service for residential customers.

NEC noted that vCPE provides CPE and other top-layer functions, such as dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) and network address translation (NAT), from data centres over Internet connections. vCPE is designed to allow the provision of enhanced home-based communications and to simplify home gateways, and the vCPE trial with K-Opticom delivered the following:

1.         By virtually establishing conventional CPE functions on the K-Opticom network, vCPE can support the provision of a secure communications environment, as well as facilitate the delivery of new services such as VoD, cloud storage and parental control.

2.         Enabled monitoring of communications status on devices such as computers and smartphones remotely at the request of the service user; allowing communications services top be improved and facilitating the prompt identification and resolution of faults.

NEC stated that based on the results of the trial with K-Opticom, the companies plan to conduct further trials in preparation for the full-scale roll-out of vCPE over 10 Gbit/s Internet services.

IEEE Study Suggests Multiple NG-EPON Specs

The IEEE released a Feasibility Assessment for the Next Generation of EPON based on the input of the wide industry ecosystem, including operators, system integrators, chip vendors, optics suppliers and others. Input was collected on the desired features and options for a next generation of EPON, operating at aggregate data rates above 10 Gigabit per second and minimizing the footprint and power consumption in optical access networks.

To address the diversity of market requirements, the referenced communication suggests consideration of multiple NG-EPON solutions, including a multi-wavelength 40G solution with an evolutionary path to 100G and single-wavelength solutions supporting the data rates of 25G symmetric or 25G downstream/10G upstream.

“The new PHYs need to consider the coexistence with the deployed EPON technologies and reuse functions and components of 10G-EPON to the extent possible,” states the IEEE 802.3 communication.

Said Marek Hajduczenia, chair of the IEEE 802.3 Industry Connections NG-EPON Ad Hoc and network architect with Bright House Networks: “The IEEE 802.3 Industry Connections NG-EPON Ad Hoc was launched to explore the market potential and technology options for an NG-EPON operating at data rates beyond 10G. The expectation is that information contained within the published communication will help with development of a future Call for Interest for NG-EPON and, afterwards, a new standard within the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group.”
