Ericsson Installs 10 Gbps E-Band Radio to Base Station

Ericsson has installed a 10 Gbps microwave hop using E-Band spectrum (70/80 GHz) in a 2+0 configuration (two carriers) in T-Mobile Czech Repulic’s live network.

The installation, which uses Ericsson’s commercially available MINI-LINK 6352, connects an optical aggregation site with a base station in the Prague area. This link spans a distance of 4.85 kilometers.

Ericsson said its outdoor MINI-LINK 6352 has the capacity and functionality to enable rapid deployment of 5G networks. The unit includes an embedded L2 switch, enabling full aggregation and switching between all traffic ports, makes it flexible to fulfill almost any site needs.

NEC Debuts 10 Gbps E-band Radio with Adaptive Modulation

NEC Corporation of America launched its new iPASOLINK EX Advanced radio, featuring Adaptive Modulation for 10 Gbps wireless throughput capacity in a single channel.

NEC said its new radio operates in E-band millimeter wave frequency range (71-86GHz), achieves low latency and high transmission capacity of 10Gbps within a single channel, more than three times higher than NEC's previous iPASOLINK EX model.

The new product's Adaptive Modulation and Bandwidth Radio (AMBR) feature enables dynamic adjustment of its modulation method and communication bandwidth according to the particular application, weather conditions and link distance, allowing it to maintain high quality network connections even in severe weather conditions.

The new iPASOLINK EX Advanced is approximately 30% smaller than the previous iPASOLINK EX model, improving site acquisition and installation costs. The integrated 10GbE interfaces allows it to efficiently transmit high capacity data via optical fiber to core networks.

KT Tests 5G Backhaul in E-Band with NEC

KT completed a 5G wireless backhaul proof of concept (PoC) in conjunction with NEC.

The test, which was conducted at Phoenix Park Ski World in PyeongChang, South Korea, used KT's commercial mobile network infrastructure. NEC supplied its ultra-compact, iPASOLINK EX microwave communications system operating in E-Band spectrum (70-80GHz).  The microwave radios were used to interconnect KT's LTE base stations.

NEC's iPASOLINK EX supports ultra-multilevel modulation (256QAM) technology for high capacity transmission of up to 3.2Gbps. It also supports narrow band transmission (channel width of 250MHz and 500MHz).

KT aims to launch 5G trial services in 2018. This PoC is based on a collaboration agreement in the field of 5G networks signed between KT and NEC in August 2015. The carrier is considering microwave backhaul using E-Band spectrum for 5G services in mountainous areas, where it is difficult to lay optical fibers.

“We are honored to have contributed to KT's 5G-related trial," said Hideyuki Muto, Deputy General Manager, Mobile Wireless Solution Division, NEC Corporation. “NEC's iPASOLINK EX can operate in harsh environments, and is easy to install at various outdoor locations without large scale installation works because it is compact and light weight. This joint PoC took advantage of these features in order to implement a high-capacity mobile backhaul network in snowy, mountainous areas very quickly. Going forward, NEC will strengthen its partnership with KT to contribute to the launch of their 5G trial services in 2018."

Fujitsu Introduces its BroadOne GX4000
