Comcast Business Rolls DOCSIS 3.1 in Northeast & Mid-Atlantic

Comcast Business is now offering DOCSIS 3.1-based Internet service to business customers in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States including Greater Boston; Greater Philadelphia; New Jersey; and northern Delaware; as well as in Baltimore, MD; Charlottesville, VA; and Washington, D.C.

Comcast plans to rollout DOCSIS 3.1-based Internet in other areas this Fall. The service is already avaialble in Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, Detroit, Chattanooga, Huntsville and Miami.

“Comcast is building the nation’s largest gig-speed network. We have been at the forefront of DOCSIS 3.1 deployment and today’s roll out further demonstrates our commitment to bringing this transformational technology to all businesses in our footprint,” said Kevin O’Toole, senior vice president of Product Management at Comcast Business. “Our gig-speed network allows businesses to quickly and easily scale network capacity at their locations to suit their individual needs and to support new technology applications on-site or in the cloud."

Comcast rolls out Xfinity Mobile

Comcast completed its nationwide rollout of Xfinity Mobile across all of its sales channels in all of its markets.

Xfinity Mobile is a new wireless service that combines its partner's (Verizon) 4g LTE network with its own Wi-Fi network of more than 18 million hotspots. Comcast estimates that nearly 70% of customers will connect to the Wi-Fi hotspots when they are on the go.

"We created a unique mobile experience that’s simple and saves customers money by connecting to our nationwide Wi-Fi network, and allows them to only pay for the data they use," said Greg Butz, president of Xfinity Mobile. "Now that we’re available across all of our distribution platforms, including our retail locations in all of our markets, we look forward to introducing even more customers to Xfinity Mobile."

Two pricing options are offered:

  • Unlimited – $45 per month, per line on up to five lines with no usage limits.
  • By the Gig – $12 per GB of shared cellular data across all lines on an account each month. The majority of customers are choosing this option.

MEF - Advancing the Industry



Over the last few years, MEF has done three very important things: (1)  shifting beyond Ethernet to support other connectivity types and network-based apps; (2)  developing Lifecycle Service Orchestration (LSO);  shifting from just implementing technology specs to implementing LSO APIs, reference processes, and other operations enablers. The combination of these three will be very powerful, says Allan Langfield, Executive Director of Product Management at Comcast Business.

Comcast to offer DOCSIS 3.1 n Oregon and SW Washington

Comcast announced that it is launching a new DOCSIS 3.1-based Internet service providing speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s for residential customers throughout its Oregon/southwest Washington region, which it believes will be among the fastest and expansive service in the region, also offering access to its national WiFi network with more than 17 million hotspots.

The company's new 1 Gigabit internet service in Oregon/SW Washington area utilises DOCSIS 3.1 technology to deliver higher speed broadband over the existing communications lines installed in most customer's homes. To access the new service, customers simply need to install a new DOCSIS 3.1-compatible cable modem.

Earlier in May, Comcast launched Xfinity xFi, a platform designed to provide a simple digital dashboard that allows customers to set up their home WiFi network, see what devices are connected, troubleshoot issues and set parental controls. Outside the home, Xfinity Internet customers also have access to nearly 17 million WiFi hotspots nationwide.



  • The gigabit service launch in Oregon and southwest Washington follows Comcast's recent announcement that it was introducing DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit Internet service for residential customers throughout Utah, specifically in the markets of Salt Lake City, Provo and North Ogden. In 2016, Comcast announced consumer trials of the DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit Internet service in parts of Atlanta and in Nashville, Tennessee.
  • In January this year, Comcast Business announced it was offering DOCSIS 3.1-based Internet service to business customers in its Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit and Nashville service areas.
  • Comcast announced in February 2016 year plans to bring gigabit Internet speeds to residential and business customers utilising DOCSIS 3.1 technology, and during the year announced it was launching an advanced consumer trial of DOCSIS 3.1 technology-based Internet service offering speeds up to 1 Gbit/s to residential customers in Chicago and Detroit.

Comcast Business trials SD-WAN solution for mid-market/enterprise customers

Comcast Business announced that it is beta testing a new software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) solution targeting mid-market and enterprise customers that combines gigabit connectivity with the flexibility of software-defined networks to provide capabilities including centralised network policy management and lower operating costs.

Comcast Business claims to be the first cable company to introduce a carrier-grade, SD-WAN platform designed for enterprises and multi-site businesses. For the new solution it has partnered with Versa Networks, a provider of next-generation, software-based networking and security technology. Leveraging the Versa Cloud IP Platform, Comcast is able to offer a secure turnkey service that improves operational efficiency for customers.

Comcast Business noted that the SD-WAN beta trial will continue during the summer, with a full market launch anticipated for later in the year.

Comcast Business added that it is currently rolling out Business Internet 1000, a DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit Internet service for business customers, and plans to extend availability throughout its service areas. It also offers a range of multi-gigabit, fibre-based Ethernet services nationwide. The combination of SD-WAN capabilities with high-speed broadband and Ethernet services is designed to offer an advanced solution for mid-market and large enterprises investing in hybrid WAN services.

Versa Networks recently announced a significant expansion of its SDN capabilities to support software-defined branch (SD-Branch) as well as SD-WAN solutions. The Versa Cloud IP Platform has been enhanced to allow large enterprises and service providers to virtualise and software-define the branch and WAN to help reduce complexity and increase flexibility.

The enhanced Versa Cloud IP Platform offering enables customers to software-define IP services across the branch office and WAN and specifically offers features including support for third-party virtual network functions (VNFs), integrated WiFi and Ethernet switching support and embedded LTE.

Commenting on the new SD-WAN offering, Kevin O’Toole, SVP of product management at Comcast Business, said, "The SD-WAN solution pairs a carrier-grade, hosted SDN environment with widely available gigabit service… SD-WAN and gigabit bandwidth solutions herald a new generation of networking that provides the bandwidth, scalability, reliability and flexibility needed for cloud applications that are transforming business operations".

Comcast and Charter to explore national wireless market cooperation

Regional cable operators Comcast and Charter have announced an agreement to explore potential opportunities for operational cooperation in their respective wireless businesses to help accelerate and enhance each company's ability to address the national wireless marketplace.

Under the agreement, the companies, which have each separately established mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) reseller agreements with Verizon Wireless, will explore cooperation in a number of potential operational areas in the wireless space, including: creating common operating platforms; technical standards development and harmonisation; device forward and reverse logistics; and emerging wireless technology platforms.

The efficiencies created are intended to help deliver greater choice, new products and competitive prices for customers across their respective service footprints. In addition, Comcast and Charter have agreed to work only with each other with respect to national mobile network operators through potential commercial arrangements, including MVNOs and other transactions in the wireless industry, for a period of one year.

Regarding the agreement, Brian L. Roberts, chairman and CEO of Comcast, said, "(Comcast) is launching Xfinity Mobile in the coming weeks and… (will) work with Charter to explore ways it can make the respective wireless initiatives more efficient and cost effective… both companies have regional wireless businesses using the same 4G LTE network, and by working together the goal is to create better experiences for our customers".


* Comcast recently reported that as part of the FCC's Broadcast Incentive Auction, in the reverse auction its broadcasting operation NBC sold spectrum in New York, Philadelphia and Chicago for total proceeds of $481.6 million, while it purchased for $1.7 billion spectrum covering 88% of its service footprint and most of the footprint of its top 25 markets.

* Comcast serves nearly 29 million residential and business customers including over 23 million residential Internet and 10.5 million residential voice subscribers. Charter is the second largest U.S. cable operator, serving nearly 22 million residential broadband Internet customers and nearly 10.5 million residential voice customers.

Comcast Expands DOCSIS 3.1 to Utah

Comcast announced the launch of a new Internet service offering speeds up to 1 Gbit/s for residential customers throughout Utah based on DOCSIS 3.1 technology and delivered over its existing network infrastructure.

The new gigabit Internet service utilises existing lines that are already deployed in most homes, making faster to provision across communities. To subscribe to the service customers need to do is install a new DOCSIS 3.1-compatible cable modem capable of delivering gigabit speeds. The new service is available for a promotional price of $70.00 per month in certain areas of Salt Lake City, Provo and North Ogden in Utah, or $109.99 per month in the rest of the state.

Comcast announced in February last year plans to bring 1 Gbit/s Internet speeds to residential and business customers utilising DOCSIS 3.1 technology. In November 2016, Comcast announced it was launching an advanced consumer trial of a new DOCSIS 3.1 technology-based Internet service offering speeds up to 1 Gbit/s to residential customers throughout the city of Detroit. In August, it launched a trial of the new gigabit Internet service in the Chicago area.

Comcast is Pleased with FCC’s Broadcast Incentive Auction

Comcast issued the following statement after the conclusion of the quiet period associated with the FCC’s Broadcast Incentive Auction:

“We are very pleased with the outcome of the FCC’s Broadcast Incentive Auction. In the Reverse auction, NBC sold spectrum at attractive prices in New York (NBC - WNBC), Philadelphia (Telemundo - WWSI), and Chicago (Telemundo - WSNS) and will receive total proceeds of $481.6 million. Additionally, with the purchase of $1.7 billion of spectrum that covers 88 percent of our footprint and most of the footprint of each of our top 25 markets, Comcast made a strategically compelling investment at historically low prices. We have no current plans for the acquired spectrum and note that the spectrum will not be cleared by the FCC and available for use for several years. The launch and growth of our Xfinity Mobile product is not dependent on this purchased spectrum.”

Comcast Business Launches DOCSIS 3.1 Service with 1 Gig and 500 Mbps Tiers

Comcast Business is rolling out DOCSIS 3.1-based Internet service to business customers in its Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit and Nashville service areas. "Business Internet 1 Gig" and "Business Internet 500" speed tiers are now available to thousands of business customers in these Comcast service areas using the company’s existing network.

Comcast said the new tiers of service complement existing gigabit and multi-gigabit options already available to Comcast Business customers, including Comcast Business Ethernet, which the company launched and has been expanding nationally since 2011. Those services can support speeds of 100 gigabits per second over fiber.

"High-capacity, high-performance internet can be a difference-maker for businesses that want to leverage software-as-a-service applications to improve their operations or enhance the customer experience by offering in-store Wi-Fi or a robust e-commerce site," said Kevin O’Toole, senior vice president of Product Management at Comcast Business. "DOCSIS 3.1 business internet service offers a new and easy plug-and-play option for accessing gigabit speeds in any business environment – whether that is a large distributed enterprise across a wide geographic area or a small business with one or a few locations."

Comcast Business plans to launch Business Internet 1 Gig and Business Internet 500 in the majority of its service areas throughout 2017 and into 2018.

Comcast Business Brings 10 Gbps Private Links to Microsoft's Cloud

Comcast Business is now supporting 10 Gbps private connectivity for enterprise customers to the Microsoft Cloud, including Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Office 365, and Microsoft Dynamics 365. The Azure ExpressRoute service is available to its more than one million Comcast Business Ethernet-enabled buildings nationwide.

The private cloud connectivity service provides businesses with predictable and often better performance, security and availability compared to connecting over the open internet, and is backed by a service level agreement (SLA).  Comcast Business is now a member of the Microsoft ExpressRoute partner program.

"As businesses increasingly rely on cloud services to virtualize more of their IT applications, they require connectivity with measurable performance, reliability and security," said Rosemary Cochran, principal at Vertical Systems Group. "The addition of Comcast Business to the Microsoft ExpressRoute partner network offers companies the cloud connectivity they need, backed by the reach and flexibility of Comcast’s expansive Ethernet service footprint."

Comcast Announces Multi-Platform, Direct-to-Consumer Solution for OTT Providers

Comcast Technology Solutions, which is a division of Comcast Cable, has expanded its direct-to-consumer (D2C) solution to help content providers build, launch, and manage over-the-top (OTT) experiences.

The expanded D2C solution offers video processing, management, multi-CDN distribution, and playout capabilities, as well as a powerful out-of-the box suite of monetization options spanning subscription management, promotion, storefront enablement, and billing. The solution is built with an innovative UX integration layer that allows UX providers to easily develop pre-integrated multi-platform application templates for maximum speed and flexibility.

Comcast Technology said its turnkey solution supports a variety of monetization models, with maximum flexibility and simplified pricing for enterprise customers.

Comcast Joins the ONOS and CORD Projects

Comcast Cable has joined the Open Network Operating System (ONOS) and Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter (CORD) projects, which are both led by ON.Lab.

“Software defined networking and network functions virtualization are powerful, fast-evolving tools for network transformation,” said Dr. Nagesh Nandiraju, Director, Network Architecture at Comcast. “We look forward to bringing our perspective and experience to the fantastic community of technologists already working on these open source projects.”

Comcast Adds Netflix to its X1 Platform

Comcast will begin delivering the Netflix service over its X1 platform. Netflix content will be fully integrated into Xfinity On Demand, enabling X1 customers to watch past and current seasons of shows.

Comcast Announces machineQ IoT Service

Comcast announced machineQ, a new business trial venture for the Internet of Things (IoT).

As a part of machineQ, Comcast will work with select commercial partners in proof of concepts to use its network to enable partners to gather, transmit, and analyze data from connected devices distributed throughout their organizations.

Comcast's machineQ will use Semtech's LoRa Wireless Radio Frequency Technology to deploy network trials in Philadelphia and San Francisco later this year. Target applications include utility metering, environmental monitoring (e.g., temperature, pollution, noise), and asset tracking through LoRa Technology-enabled devices and network services.

"We believe the business-to-business segment of the Internet of Things market is going to expand rapidly over the next decade as businesses look to IoT-based technology to manage their businesses in a more effective and sophisticated manner," said Sam Schwartz, Chief Business Development Officer, Comcast Cable. Comcast to Offer Pre-paid TV and Internet Option

Comcast will begin offering pay-as-you-go TV and Internet service.

Xfinity Prepaid Services lets people sign-up for TV or Internet service and “refill” their subscription any time they would like for either seven or 30 days.

The TV and Internet services, which come without a credit check or contract, will be available later this year starting in Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, Florida and Indiana and offered everywhere within the Comcast footprint by the end of 2017.

Comcast Readies for Gigabit Internet Service Rollout in Nashville

Comcast is beginning an advanced consumer trial of Gigabit Internet service to Nashville, it's second market following an earlier trial launched in Atlanta in April. The service uses DOCSIS 3.1 technology.

Comcast said initial customers in Nashville will have the choice of a promotional contract price of $70 per month for 36 months, or an everyday price with no contract at $139.95.

Ericsson Develops Wi-Fi on Wheels for Comcast

Ericsson has packed six Wi-Fi access points into a Ford Transit 350 cargo van for what it calls "Wi-Fi on Wheels."

The mobile Wi-Fi unit, which has an range of about 500 feet, could provid coverage to as many as 2,500 people. It was developed in conjunction with Comcast.

The van is equipped for multiple network access connections, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) microwave backhaul, and onboard backup power and modular deployment elements.

"Driving innovation means not only bringing the best technology, but also enabling it to be used in new ways,” explains Angel Ruiz, President and CEO of Ericsson North America. "This new rapid deployment solution will mean fast dispatch and hassle-free setup for Comcast, so they can bring coverage to new hard-to-reach locations."

Comcast Business Offers Direct Ethernet to AWS at Up to 10G

Comcast Business is now offering AWS Direct Connect Ethernet service at up to 10 Gbps.

Comcast Business is now a member of the AWS Partner Network (APN).  Comcast said it has the reach to connect more than 1 million Ethernet-enabled buildings in the Comcast network to AWS services like Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Solution (Amazon S3) and Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC).

The integration with AWS Direct Connect marks another addition to the data center and cloud program Comcast Business unveiled in 2014 that is designed to provide customers with more efficient access to cloud solutions. Comcast noted that it has one of the largest and most diverse networks in the country, with connections to more than 400 data centers and cloud exchanges.

“Connecting to a leading provider of cloud services is an advanced IT asset for our enterprise customers, and as CIOs and IT leaders look to expand their use of AWS, our integration with AWS Direct Connect will give them a new Ethernet network option to connect dispersed office locations and data centers,” said Denice Hasty, senior vice president of Marketing and Product Management for Comcast Business. “A key part of our cloud and data center initiative is to give businesses direct access to cloud providers for increased options and flexibility as they customize their hybrid network strategies.”
