Citrix Integrates its NetScaler ADC with Cisco Nexus Fabric

The Citrix NetScaler application delivery controller (ADC) can now be configured as a remote services blade for the Cisco Nexus 7000 Series Switch, enabling automated control, simplified deployment and an overall lower cost of operations compared to a conventional side-by-side deployment.

The integration of NetScaler into the Nexus 7000 is made possible by Cisco Remote Integrated Service Engine (RISE) technology. Once installed, NetScaler integrates an external appliance as if it were an embedded service module attached directly to the switch backplane in order to leverage the intelligence of the switch itself. RISE technology significantly reduces the number of steps required to integrate NetScaler with the Cisco Nexus 7000 Series Switch.

"As networks transform into cloud architectures for secure and scalable mobile services delivery, intelligent automation becomes a core underpinning to ease deployment, enhance operational control and enable true network elasticity. Leveraging Cisco RISE technology in the Nexus 7000 series, best-in-class application delivery capabilities powered by Citrix NetScaler become an industry-first offering to be tightly coupled with the Nexus fabric - empowering public and private clouds to dramatically simplify networks and gain unparalleled agility," stated Sunil Potti, Vice President and General Manager, NetScaler Product Group, Citrix.

Cisco Offers Desktop as a Service (DaaS) for Cloud Providers

Cisco introduced a Desktop as a Service (DaaS) solution that enables enabling cloud providers to offer their customers a either a VMware or Citrix virtual desktop subscription service using the Cisco Unified Computing System and the Cisco Unified Data Center architecture.

The Cisco DaaS solution delivers up to 252 virtual desktops on a single UCS blade server while supporting end user applications that require high-quality rendering of immersive, 3D graphics.  Cisco is also adding new UCS Solution Accelerator Packs for Desktop Virtualization that provide simplified ordering.

"Many organizations are looking for ways to achieve the benefits of desktop virtualization without the need to install and maintain equipment or make capital investments," said Satinder Sethi, Vice President, Engineering.  "Not only is Desktop as a Service a great solution for a growing number of companies, but Cisco's offering is uniquely architected to help cloud service providers achieve rapid time-to-market while economically scaling their business."

"Desktone by VMware and Cisco have developed a complete and proven blueprint for enabling service providers to offer a Desktop as a Service solution for delivering Windows desktops and applications as a cloud service based on VMware Horizon View." said Peter McKay, Vice President and General Manager, End-User Computing, VMware. "Our mutual customers such as Logicalis, Quest, Netelligent, Dimension Data, Adapt and ANS are utilizing our unique architecture that includes multi-tenancy, self-service provisioning, multi data center management, multi-desktop model support, grid-scale, and security to deliver Desktop as a Service and provide differentiated value added services to their customers".

Citrix to Open NetScaler Control Center for VMware NSX

Citrix's NetScaler Control Center will gain support for VMware's new NSX network virtualization technology. This will provides automated deployment and configuration of NetScaler functionality within networks that will use the new VMware NSX network virtualization platform and other VMware virtualization technologies. Release dates have not yet been specified.

Citrix said its goal is to enable cloud administrators to programmatically insert NetScaler services into software-defined data centers built on VMware virtualization technologies.

Benefits include:

  •  Enable users to spin-up NetScaler services in their VMware-based cloud environments at the same time they are spinning up virtual servers, virtual storage and the larger virtual network

  • Allow self-service NetScaler configuration by users directly from the VMware vCloud GUI
  • Free users from dealing with the complexities of network topology and configuration, allowing them to focus solely on the NetScaler functionality that their applications need

  • Complement NetScaler Insight Center and NetScaler Command Center, solutions that deliver deep visibility and control to critical business applications and mobile services across public and private cloud environments

Cisco Adds Citrix NetScaler to Unified Fablic Cloud Portfolio

Cisco will integrate the Citrix NetScaler application delivery controller (ADC) technology into the Cisco Unified Fabric Cloud Network Services portfolio. Specifically, the Citrix NetScaler 1000V will be sold by Cisco and its channel partners worldwide and supported by the Cisco Technical Assistance Center.

The announcement builds on a strategic alliance announced by the companies in October 2012.

Some key points:

The Citrix NetScaler 1000V will integrate with the Cisco Nexus 1100 Cloud Services Platform and vPath service insertion architecture to uniquely link to the Nexus 1000V.

As part of the Cisco and Citrix collaboration in next-generation data center and cloud architectures, the Citrix NetScaler SDX service delivery networking platform and the Citrix NetScaler MPX hardware-based line of ADCs will also attach to the Cisco Nexus 7000 Series switches in the future.  This capability will provide customers the benefits of higher resiliency, plug and play installation, improved agility, and increased leverage of both their switching and ADC investments.

A portfolio of virtual services for the Cisco Nexus 1000V virtual networking environment will be available, including the ASA 1000V Cloud Firewall, Virtual Security Gateway virtual firewall, virtual Wide Area Application Services WAN optimization solution, Cisco Prime virtual Network Analysis Module, and Cloud Services Router 1000V. The portfolio also includes best-of-breed third party virtual services offerings that are seamlessly integrated into the framework. Citrix NetScaler 1000V will seamlessly co-exist and interoperate with the broader Cisco Cloud Network Services family.

The two companies are also collaborating on go-to-market initiatives, including the publication of Cisco Validated Design (CVD) reference documents to assist customers gaining full leverage from Cisco’s Unified Data Center strategy.

“As enterprise IT aligns itself with cloud rollouts and virtualization, datacenters are becoming the cornerstones of business, driving the need for closer integration between functional elements, and optimizing how applications are delivered over IT and network infrastructure. In that context, the cloud network services-focused partnership between Citrix and Cisco is clearly a step in the right direction,” stated Ram Appalaraju, Vice President, Products, Data Center Group, Cisco.
