CipherCloud Acquires Anicut Systems - Adaptive Security as a Service

CipherCloud, which provides cloud visibility and data protection, announced the acquisition of Anicut Systems, a privately held provider of adaptive security as a service. Financial terms were not disclosed.

CipherCloud said Anicut's technology enhances its cloud discovery, data protection and monitoring platform by bringing additional intelligence and security controls that help organizations defend against a fast evolving threats landscape. Anicut provides advanced cloud security analysis of real-time traffic using machine learning to detect malicious insider and external threats. The technology detects both high risk clouds and high risk user activities in their use of cloud services based on over 60 attributes to detect advanced attacks on cloud services such as spear phishing and watering hole. It also enables administrators to effectively configure and enforce corporate cloud use policies.

CipherCloud's open platform provides cloud application discovery and risk assessment, data protection – searchable strong encryption, tokenization, data loss prevention, key management and malware detection – and extensive user activity and anomaly monitoring services.

"We continue to raise the bar for cloud security," said Pravin Kothari, founder and CEO of CipherCloud. "The rapid pace of cloud adoption by organizations requires deep intelligence into cloud threats and real-time protection for data across clouds. We are making this investment to go deeper into cloud visibility and security given the clear demand."

CipherCloud Raises $50 Million for Cloud Encryption

CipherCloud, a start-up based in San Jose, California, announced a $50 million round of financing for its cloud protection.

CipherCloud provides cloud encryption and tokenization gateways to help enterprises to securely adopt cloud applications by eliminating concerns about data privacy, residency, security and regulatory compliance.

The funding round was led by Transamerica Ventures joined by Delta Partners, and existing investors Andreessen Horowitz and T-Venture, the venture capital arm of Deutsche Telekom.

The CipherCloud cloud security platform contains the following essential components:

  • Cloud application discovery that provides aggregated reporting and dashboards of cloud applications including understanding employee usage and behavior, whether they are using enterprise approved cloud applications or not, and the level of risk of using them and most importantly putting data into them.
  • Cloud data security that delivers based on corporate policies, industry regulations, or country required compliance laws the maximum level of protection to all sensitive data through a combination of searchable strong encryption, tokenization and malware detection controls.
  • Cloud user monitoring that enables the tracking and identification of anomalies that help to reduce the source of risk from both of insider and external threats.

"We began our cloud security journey in 2010 by solving the cryptographer's dilemma – enabling the breakthrough of searchable strong encryption while preserving the operations of cloud applications," said Pravin Kothari, founder and CEO, CipherCloud. "Now four years later, CipherCloud is the clear leader in the market with over three million users and is establishing the standard for how enterprises adopt the cloud while controlling and securing their data."

CipherCloud Acquires CloudUp Networks

CipherCloud has acquired CloudUp Networks, a privately held provider of SaaS application security. The transaction closed in early January. The financial terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed.

CipherCloud provides cloud encryption and tokenization gateways to help enterprises to securely adopt cloud applications by eliminating concerns about data privacy, residency, security and regulatory compliance.  The company began its cloud protection journey by delivering encryption, tokenization and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) capabilities.  The company has since integrated visibility capabilities into its platform to help customers discover data anomalies and determine the relevant security controls to protect their cloud bound data.

CipherCloud said the integration of CloudUp brings new capabilities to scan and tag different classes of data in order to protect sensitive organizational information. Additionally, the CloudUp technology provides a holistic view of the sensitivity of data across all cloud applications and enables DLP policies to be enforced on cloud data based on the sensitivity or risk level of that data. These capabilities enhance an organization's visibility into and compliance controls for data throughout its cloud lifecycle.

"We continue to raise the bar for cloud information protection," said Pravin Kothari, founder and CEO of CipherCloud. "The consumption of multiple cloud applications into the enterprise requires security to be in lock step with visibility. This acquisition reflects our strategy of growing our business with the tools our customers need to go to the cloud."

CipherCloud Introduces Cloud Encryption for Amazon RDS and Amazon Redshift

CipherCloud is now available for Amazon Web Services (AWS), enabling users to encrypt data on Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) and Amazon Redshift, AWS' petabyte-scale data warehouse service.

The solution, which offers several encryption options that can be applied on a field-by-field basis, provides AES 256-bit encryption and customer-retained key management to provide tighter control of data in Amazon RDS and Amazon Redshift. The company said these encryption capabilities enable customers to comply with the latest privacy mandates, including GLBA, PCI, HIPAA, HITECH, UK Data Protection Act, UK ICO guidance, the Australian Privacy Amendment Act and US state disclosure laws.

"Organizations in the public and private sectors are increasingly tapping the cost efficiencies and elasticity of the cloud to meet data storage and collaboration needs," said Pravin Kothari, founder and CEO of CipherCloud. "At the same time, privacy regulations around the world require strong data security and compliance to protect sensitive information from hacks, accidental leaks and surveillance. CipherCloud now makes it easy to add strong encryption to any data going to the cloud, without modifying code, or disabling cloud functionality."

Additionally, customers can also integrate other cloud applications for abilities such as offloading file storage into AWS environments to dramatically reduce costs and avoid storage limitations. This extends the ability to leverage AWS for real time database needs, such as cloud bursting for structured data (e.g., names, contact details and account numbers) stored in other clouds. The process is transparent to users as CipherCloud seamlessly encrypts and forwards files to AWS for storage while sending a pointer to the file on other applications where the data remains.
