Ultra-fast Optical Mesh for Terrestrial, Airborne and Space Applications

BridgeComm is working with Boeing HorizonX on optical wireless communications (OWC) for one-to-many connectivity at 10-100+ Gbps. The two companies are collaboratively on OWC that provides bi-directional, ultra-high-speed mesh connectivity for terrestrial, airborne and space systems.

“Boeing has been a great partner for BridgeComm, beginning with Boeing HorizonX Ventures’ investment in 2018 to a broader strategic relationship,” says BridgeComm CEO Barry A. Second Intelsat EpicNG Launch Expected in August

Intelsat 33e, the second of the Intelsat EpicNG series of high throughput satellites (“HTS”), arrived at the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, where it will undergo final preparations before its scheduled launch on an Ariane 5 rocket on the 24th of August, 2016.

Intelsat 33e was manufactured by Boeing and is equipped with the most advanced digital payload on a commercial spacecraft.

Intelsat 33e will extend Intelsat’s high throughput capacity in both C- and Ku-band from the Americas to include Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean regions.

Intelsat said it has a number of customers already committed to Intelsat 33e, some of which include Pakistani Internet service provider SuperNet Limited, African telecommunications providers such as Telkom South Africa, Orange, IP Planet, Vodacom, Dijoubti Telecom, Safarifone and Africell RDC SPRL.; Russian network service providers Romantis and RuSat LLC; and media customers including TV & Radio Broadcasting (formerly Television and Radio Broadcasting of Armenia), and MultiChoice of South Africa.

Intelsat 33e will also deliver enterprise-grade, broadband services to aeronautical and maritime mobility service providers and users, including maritime mobility customers such as EMC, Harris CapRock and Marlink, and aero mobility customers such as Gogo and Panasonic Avionics.

First Intelsat EpicNG Satellite Successfully Launched by Arianespace

The first of the Intelsat EpicNG high throughput satellites was launched successfully from French Guiana aboard an Ariane 5 vehicle.

The Intelsat 29e (IS-29e), which is the first of the EpicNG satellites, combines high throughput Ku- spot beams in the Americas to meet broadband demand for carrier-grade telecom and enterprise connectivity as well as Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean coverage for dense aero and shipping routes. It also offers a transatlantic Ku- wide beam overlay and provides efficient broadcast capabilities for in-flight entertainment. C-band wide beam provides full South American continent coverage for media distribution. Boeing served as prime contractor.

  • In 2012, Intelsat first unveiled its EpicNG platform -- a new approach to satellite and network architecture utilizing multiple frequency bands, wide beams, spot beams and frequency reuse technology. EpicNG will be the company's next generation of satellites, promising higher throughputs and lower cost per bit. It will be a complementary overlay to the company's existing constellation of satellites and global IntelsatONE terrestrial network.

ViaSat and Boeing Build Lower Cost Space/Ground System

ViaSat and Boeing are teaming up to offer an integrated space/ground system for Service Providers that promises lower cost per bit and more flexibility.

The companies said next-generation RF Satellite Access Nodes, with an overall footprint size similar to cellular wireless towers, can effectively compete with terrestrial service alternatives for regional operators.

"The advantage of using geostationary satellites to spread broadband availability worldwide is the ability to focus capacity to where it is needed, rather than blanket the entire globe with a thin layer of capacity regardless of population density or demand," said Mark Dankberg, ViaSat chairman and CEO. "Our new system will add another dimension to that capability, with a networking system that can quickly shift or add capacity to markets where demand begins to grow or change."

"The blending of technologies – a high throughput payload with the economic efficiency of the Boeing all-electric propulsion 702SP satellite – provides the lowest cost per bit of capacity," said Mark Spiwak, president of Boeing Satellite Systems International, Inc. "The joint product offering between Boeing and ViaSat helps address a market need for regional operators."

The ViaSat Flexible Broadband System is based on the most advanced ViaSat High-Capacity Satellite System, the same flexible networking system developed for the ViaSat-2 satellite scheduled to launch next year. ViaSat and Boeing are also adapting a ViaSat-2 based payload to the Boeing 702SP (small platform) satellite bus to provide affordable and flexible satellite broadband anywhere in the world.

  • Earlier this year, SpaceX was selected to launch ViaSat's next generation, high-capacity broadband satellite (ViaSat-2) in late summer 2016 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. ViaSat-2, which is currently under construction by Boeing, will cover seven times the geographic area and offer twice the bandwidth economics advantage of ViaSat-1. Planned coverage includes North America, Central America, and the Caribbean basin. The satellite will also provide a bridge of coverage across the North Atlantic, connecting North America with high-capacity coverage in the UK and Europe for high-speed in-flight internet and other mobile services.

ViaSat Plans World's Highest Capacity Satellite for 2016 Launch

ViaSat awarded a contract to Boeing to build the world's highest capacity satellite for launch in mid-2016.

ViaSat-2, which is based on ViaSat's next generation, Ka-band satellite technology and architecture, will double the bandwidth economics of ViaSat-1 while simultaneously increasing its coverage footprint by seven-fold.

Coverage for ViaSat-2 will include North America, Central America, the Caribbean, a small portion of northern South America as well as the primary aeronautical and maritime routes across the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe.   

ViaSat said improvements to its SurfBeam networking technology will yield performance "commensurate with high-speed fiber-to-the-node networks (FTTN)."

ViaSat-2 will be based on the Boeing 702HP satellite bus.  

ViaSat and Boeing also signed a strategic agreement to jointly market and sell satellites systems based on ViaSat-2 technology.  

"The market success of ViaSat-1 class satellites has highlighted the magnitude of the opportunity for truly competitive satellite services," said Mark Dankberg, chairman and CEO of ViaSat. "It's clear that superior bandwidth economics in space create competitive advantages on the ground, in the air, and at sea, compared to other satellite and terrestrial alternatives. ViaSat-2 represents a significant breakthrough in broadband satellite technology – for the very first time combining extremely high bandwidth capacity with very large coverage areas. ViaSat-2 will make it possible to offer superior in-flight connectivity on applications ranging from JetBlue leisure flights to the Caribbean to U.S. government aircraft traveling to Europe or Latin America, to critical national and Homeland Security missions. ViaSat-2 will also combine unprecedented capacity and coverage with operational flexibility – solving historically intractable issues in geographical distribution of bandwidth demand, capital investments, and system performance. We believe ViaSat-2 is more than just state-of-the-art technology, it's a great investment."


  •  ViaSat's "Exede" Internet satellite service for North America is powered by the ViaSat-1 satellite,  which iffers the highest capacity commercial satellite to date with 140 Gbps of capacity.  The Exede service offers up to 12 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps with plans starting at $50 per month.

  • In September 2012, Intelsat selected Boeing's 702MP platform for its first EpicNG high-performance satellite.
Scheduled for launch in 2015, Intelsat 29e will offer high-performance communications coverage spanning North and South America, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the North Atlantic aeronautical route connecting North America and Europe.
