Dremio raises $25 million for its data analytics

Dremio, a start-up based in Mountain View, California, announced 25 million in Series B funding for its data analytics solutions.

Dremio said it "simplifies and governs the process of achieving interactive speed on data from any source, at any scale, at any time, through a self-service model delivered on an open source platform." Its solution takes advantage of elastic compute resources as well as object storage such as Amazon S3 for its Data Reflection Store. It can be run as an elastic service in the cloud and on-premises.

Apache Arrow was created by Dremio to provide the core data building block for heterogeneous data infrastructures and tools, including Spark, Python, R, BI, RDBMS, NoSQL, and file systems. Arrow is now the de-facto standard for in-memory analytics, with more than 100,000 downloads a month and adoption across a diverse range of projects.

“Dremio makes data self-service for data consumers in the same way that AWS makes infrastructure self-service for developers, but it benefits more than 10 times as many individuals. We are thrilled about the support and confidence we have received from our customers and investors, and we look forward to continuing to change the way data is harnessed by all companies,” stated Tomer Shiran, co-founder and CEO, Dremio.

The funding round was led by new investor Norwest Venture Partners with participation from existing investorsLightspeed Venture Partners and Redpoint Ventures. This brings total funding to $40 million.

Dreamio was founded in 2015 by Tomer Shiran (previously MapR, Microsoft, and IBM) and Jacques Nadeau (creator and PMC Chair of Apache Arrow; previously at MapR where he ran the distributed systems team).

Scalyr raises $20m for server log management

Scalyr, a start-up based in San Mateo, California, raised $20 million in Series A funding for its cloud-based log management and server monitoring service.

Scalyr, which was founded by two former Google engineers, aggregates a company’s server logs and metrics into a centralized system for analysis and troubleshooting. The company said its solution takes advantage of the cloud’s economies of scale and allows for efficiencies unseen in rival log management systems. Scalyr said its system enables engineers to search 1 terabyte of log data per second.

The company notes 140 customers, including CareerBuilder, Business Insider, OkCupid, Baidu and Giphy.

The funding round was led by Shasta Ventures with participation from earlier investors Bloomberg Beta, Susa Ventures and Heroic Ventures.

“We’ve had a lot of success with early sales. Once customers see they can resolve issues 5X faster, it’s a no-brainer,” said Scalyr Founder and CEO Steve Newman, a repeat entrepreneur whose last company—Writely—was acquired by Google to become Google Docs. “Now we just need to spread the word, scaling up sales and marketing. We’re also expanding our engineering and product teams. We’ve only just begun to shake up operational visibility.”

Aruba builds analytics-driven security framework for multivendor networks

Aruba, the wireless networking division of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, is launching an analytics-driven attack detection and response framework to bolster enterprise security from the edge, to the core, to the cloud for multivendor networks.

Aruba 360 Secure Fabric is a security framework that builds on User and Entity Behavioral Analytics (UEBA) to detect and respond to advanced cyberattacks from pre-authorization to post-authorization across multivendor networks, not just its own wireless LAN gear. Aruba already offers an IntroSpect UEBA product line that leverages machine learning security to detect anomalous user and traffic patterns across multiple data sources. Aruba Introspect can ingest common data sources including Microsoft Active Directory or other LDAP authentication records and identity information, and firewall logs from sources such as Checkpoint, Palo Alto Networks, or Aruba monitoring (AMON) logs from Aruba infrastructure.

Key components of the Aruba 360 Secure Fabric include:

  • Aruba IntroSpect UEBA solution : A new network-agnostic family of continuous monitoring and advanced attack detection software. Includes a new entry-level edition and uses machine learning to detect changes in user and device behavior that can indicate attacks that have evaded traditional security defenses. Machine-learning algorithms generate a Risk Score based on the severity of an attack to speed up incident investigations for security teams.
  • Aruba ClearPass : A network access control (NAC) and policy management security solution that can profile BYOD and IoT users and devices, enabling automated attack response, is now integrated with Aruba IntroSpect. ClearPass can also be deployed on any vendor’s network.
  • Aruba Secure Core : Essential security capabilities embedded in the foundation across all of Aruba’s Wi-Fi access points, wireless controllers, and switches, including the recently introduced Aruba 8400 campus core and aggregation switch.

Aruba said its new framework delivers betters and complementary attack detection with leading third-party security solutions. An emphasis is places on rapid response for breach investigations based on forensic traffic analysis.

IBM and SAP team on real-time retail data

IBM and SAP have teamed up to provide a co-innovated solution for the retail and consumer packaged goods industries that uses near real-time data to markedly improve planning and execution in the physical store.

The solution leverages unique data sources, such as IBM’s Metro Pulse, which flow through SAP Cloud Platform.

"SAP S/4HANA, coupled with access to rich, hyperlocal data understood and reasoned by IBM’s cognitive services, can provide consumer product and retail business users across the C-suite with the specific insights to gain a competitive advantage in major markets,” said Laurence Haziot, IBM Global Managing Director and General Manager Consumer Industries.

NTT DOCOMO invests in Petametrics

NTT DOCOMO Ventures has made an equity investment in Petametrics, a San Francisco start-up that provides “LiftIgniter”, a personalization API to deliver a wholly unique experience to every individual user impression.

LiftIgniter was founded by Indraneel Mukherjee, a former Google researcher, and a team of machine learning and math PhDs., The personalization engine is powering various NTT DOCOMO e-commerce services.

NTT DOCOMO said personalization based on sparse data points and real-time action by users has demonstrated the ability to significantly improve sales and customer engagement. However, most personalization engines require data scientists to analyze huge amounts of log data combined with user preferences and historical information in order to deliver intelligent recommendations to the end-user. With LiftIgniter, the machine learning-based personalization algorithms run 24/7, learning and reacting to each impression in real-time to predict and serve up tailored content for every user touchpoint. The platform is agnostic across all content, languages and devices. It can be fully integrated and operational within a few hours, with minimal ongoing management.

Plexxi teams with Decision Lab for real-time analytics

Plexxi and Decision Lab announced a strategic partnership combining Plexxi's Hyperconverged Networking (HCN) software and Decision Lab's real-time analytics for the Plexxi network fabric. The companies will co-develop an integrated set of software tools that collect fabric data path and control path statistics and provide users with analytics dashboards that will present customers with critical insights into their Plexxi datacenter network.

Thales to Acquire Guavus for Data Analytics

Thales agreed to acquire Guavus, which specializes in big data analytics, for US$215 million.

Guavus said it currently analyzes more than 5 petabytes of data every day on behalf of its customers, which include telecom and cable operators.  The company supports more than 20 major operators around the world, including the 5 largest North-American mobile operators (AT&T, Rogers, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon), 4 out of the top 5 Internet backbone carriers, and 7 out of the top 8 cable operators. Guavus is based in San Mateo, California and has about 250 employees, including 140 in Gurgaon (India).

MEF Demos LSO Analytics using PNDA



MEF demonstrated a reference implementation of LSO (Lifecycle Services Orchestration) analytics using Platform for Network Data Analytics (PNDA), a Linux Foundation project. PNDA aims to eliminate complexity by integrating, scaling and managing a rich set of open data processing technologies and by providing an end-to- end platform for deploying analytics applications and services.

MEF worked within its OpenLSO Analytics initiative to demonstrate both open source and closed source versions of MEF members’ LSO products integrated with PNDA. This reference implementation illustrates how big data analytics (BDA) can be used within the MEF LSO Framework to intelligently automate network resources in real-time and proactively deliver service assurance for demanding applications in complex networking environments.

Cisco Advances its Tetration Analytics

Cisco announced new capabilities for its Tetration Analytics framework including automated policy enforcement derived from its deep inspection of packet traffic.

Cisco Tetration Analytics, which was first unveiled in June 2016, gathers telemetry data from the ASICs on-board Cisco Nexus 9000 switches and/or from low-overhead software sensors in servers. It then applies machine learning techniques using analytics software running on Cisco UCS C220 servers to addresses critical data center operations such as policy compliance, application forensics, and whitelist security. REST APIs are used to drive a WebGUI. Tetration provides actionable results dynamically based on behavior analysis of billions of flows, processes, and workload characteristics.

Micro-Segmentation

Cisco’s latest software for Tetration Analytics now provides consistent security policy enforcement applied holistically across each application.

Cisco said policy can be enforced regardless of where the application resides: virtual, bare metal, physical servers, or in private or public clouds, across any vendor’s infrastructure. This new enforcement model binds policies to workload characteristics and behaviors while ensuring that the policy stays intact even as the workload moves.

Cisco is also delivering two new deployment models for Tetration Analytics. In addition to the original large scale platform, Cisco now offers a new smaller-scale platform, Tetration-M, suitable for deployments up to 1,000 workloads. Cisco is also introducing a new cloud appliance with software deployed in the public cloud on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Tetration Cloud – also suitable for deployments up to 1000 workloads. Regardless of the deployment model, Tetration can monitor workloads in private as well as public clouds.

Ciena Blue Planet Adds Analytics

Ciena is integrating analytics and machine learning into its Blue Planet portfolio to help service providers improve the end user experience and simplify network operations.

Specifically, Blue Planet Analytics combines analytics with orchestration and policy. It utilizes machine learning on data collected from multiple sources, including multiple network vendors, layers and physical or virtual domains. It can also take advantage of third party big data cluster systems such as Hadoop, Cloudera, and Hortonworks.

Ciena said the new capability and related applications gives operators the ability to visualize and identify trends in order to create more profitable services, better predict capacity requirements, and anticipate potential network and service disruptions before they take place.

AppsFlyer Raises $56 Million for Mobile Analytics

AppsFlyer, a start-up based in San Francisco, raised an additional $56 million in Series C financing for its mobile attribution and marketing data analytics.

AppsFlyer's mission is to make the marketing industry more measureable. The company said that over the past 2 years its revenues have grown by 500% and staff from 40 to 240 people across 12 global offices. AppsFlyer measures $6 billion in mobile marketing spend annually, processes over 300 billion mobile events every month, has more than 2,000 integrated partners and supports over ten thousand marketers as clients. In addition to their existing measurement partnerships with major industry players including Facebook, Google, and Twitter, AppsFlyer was recently selected as a measurement partner by Pinterest, Tencent, Adobe, Yahoo!, and IBM.

Enea Completes Acquisition of Qosmos

Enea completed its acquisition of Qosmos, a privately held company with leading positions in IP traffic classification and network intelligence, for approximately EUR 52.7 million. Qosmos is estimated to generate sales of approximately EUR 14.2 million in 2016.

Qosmos is a supplier of Network Intelligence software based on Deep Packet Inspection. Its software provides detailed real-time traffic visibility for applications such as mobile traffic management, cyber security, and network analytics.

Nokia to acquire Deepfield for Big Data Analytics

Nokia agreed to acquire Deepfield, a start-up specializing in in real-time analytics for IP network performance management and security.

Deepfield, which  was founded in 2011 and is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, developed an analytics platform that identifies over 30 000 popular cloud applications and services.  Its Internet Genome tracks how traffic runs to and through networks to reach subscribers, in real time, and without the need for probes, taps and monitors in the network itself.

Nokia said it plans couple Deepfield big data analytics with the dynamic control capabilities of open SDN platforms, such as the Nokia Network Services Platform (NSP) and Nuage Networks Virtualized Services Platform (VSP). Together, these products become the cognitive "brain" that makes real-time, automated changes to wide area networks (WANs) and datacenter networks so they can quickly adapt to changes in application demand, flow and traffic patterns. This will allow Nokia customers to drive greater network efficiency, help assure quality and enhance security - without manual intervention, and in real-time.

Nokia's service assurance and customer experience management portfolios would also leverage Deepfield's big data analytics, including per subscriber application performance, to automate actions that ensure ongoing service health and customer satisfaction.

BC Partners and Medina Capital Add Analytics to New JV

BC Partners and Medina Capital agreed to acquire Brainspace Corporation, a privately-held machine learning and analytics company based in Addison, Texas.

Brainspace will become part of the new joint venture global cybersecurity company providing software, services and infrastructure. The joint venture includes a portfolio of 57 data centers to be acquired from CenturyLink, along with the acquisition of Medina Capital's portfolio of security and data analytics companies.

Arista Adds Telemetry Features with HPE, SAP, Veriflow and VMware

Arista Networks is rolling out new telemetry and analytics capabilities for cloud networks.

The new Arista EOS (Extensible Operating System) and CloudVision provides visibility into network workloads, workflows, and workstreams on a network-wide basis.

Key features include:

  • Instantaneous event-driven streaming of every state change, providing improved granularity compared to traditional polling models.
  • State visibility from all devices in the network, including configuration, counters, errors, statistics, tables, environmentals, buffer utilization, flow data, and much more.
  • CloudVision Analytics Engine for storing state history and performing trend analysis, event correlation, and automated alerts. The basis for both real-time monitoring and historical forensic event investigation.
  • New Telemetry Apps for the CloudVision Portal, including the Workstream Analytics Viewer, providing simplified visualization of network-wide state for faster time to resolution.
  • An open framework, built on standard RESTful APIs as well as OpenConfig-based infrastructure, providing a point for integration into a variety of partner solutions and customer-specific infrastructure.

Brocade Expands Analytics Monitoring for SANs

Brocade introduced new capabilities in its Analytics Monitoring Platform for providing end-to-end visibility and greater insight into application performance.

The Brocade Analytics Monitoring Platform is a purpose-built SAN appliance that measures application- and device-level I/O performance and analyzes traffic behavior within Brocade Gen 6 and Gen 5 Fibre Channel networks. The solution delivers actionable intelligence to administrators enabling them to optimize application performance.

New features include:

Viewics Secures $10.5 Million for Healthcare Analytics

Viewics, a start-up based in Sunnyvale, California, raised $10.5 million in new funding for its healthcare-focused analytics for hospitals and health systems.

The new funding was led by existing investor Canvas Ventures and new investor Roche Venture Fund, whose portfolio includes 23andMe, Flatiron, and Lumos Pharma. City National Bank also participated.

Viewics HIPAA-compliant platform provides advanced analytics beyond business intelligence software.

NETSCOUT Announces nGenius for Flows

NETSCOUT SYSTEMS announced its "nGenius for Flows" solution for extending its Adaptive Service Intelligence analysis to flow-based data sources

Specifically, nGenius for Flows, which is an integrated extension to nGeniusONE, adds NetFlow and other flow data to the core packet flow. The data sources all are converted to proprietary Adaptive Service Intelligence® (ASI) data for business assurance analytics.
