Ethernet Alliance Sees Promising Interoperability Results for 25G

A multi-vendor feasibility event testing pre-standard 25 Gbps Ethernet equipment and cabling has found an 86% interoperability success rate.

The recent 25 Gbps technical feasibility event held at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) produced promising results, according to The Ethernet Alliance, with a high percentage of tests exceeding expected requirements of the proposed IEEE 25 Gbps standard. Data captured during the testing was also provided to the IEEE P802.3by 25 Gbps Ethernet Task Force to aid in its refinement of IEEE’s proposed 25 Gigabit Ethernet (25GbE) specification.

“Work on the IEEE P802.3by 25 Gb/s standard is progressing quickly, but having this data available has been highly beneficial to the development of the 25 Gigabit Ethernet standard,” said Mark Nowell, chairman, IEEE P802.3by 25Gb/s Ethernet Task Force; and senior director of engineering, Cisco Systems. “The positive results generated at the Ethernet Alliance 25Gb/s feasibility event were very encouraging. I would like to thank the Ethernet Alliance for making this event a reality and bringing this data forward.”

“Interoperability doesn’t just happen. Ensuring the multi-vendor interoperability everyone is seeking requires investment from the Ethernet Alliance, technology developers, and the industry as a whole. We enable product testing against specifications and between multiple vendors. During our recent 40G/100G plugfest, we were testing equipment developed throughout the last five years, however, 25GbE is still at a nascent stage of the standardization process,” said Scott Kipp, president, Ethernet Alliance; and principal technologist, Brocade. “The array of pre-standard equipment and cables tested during our technical feasibility event showed an unanticipated level of maturity. It’s a strong expression of the Ethernet ecosystem’s continued commitment to interoperability and a sign of the industry’s desire to capitalize on the benefits that 25Gb/s signaling offers.”

Vendors taking part in the testing included Amphenol, Arista Networks, Cisco, Dell, FCI, Hitachi, Intel, Ixia, Luxshare-ICT, Marvell Technology Group, Mellanox Technologies, Molex, QLogic, Spirent, TE Connectivity, and Xilinx.

Arista Debuts Data Center Switches for 25/50/100GbE

Arista Networks introduced its new line-up of data center switches for 25/50/100GbE switching.

The new family of Arista 7060X, 7260X and 7320X fixed-leaf and modular-spline form factor switches offers a range of options at 1GbE to 100GbE along with Arista EOS (extensible operating system) features such as Smart System Upgrade with hitless software upgrades, hitless speed change and network rollback.  Highlights:

  • 7060CX-32S - offers multi-speed 10/25/40/50/100GbE on all 32 ports in a 1RU leaf switch along with flexible L2 and L3 features and wirespeed performance.
  • 7260QX-64 - 64 ports of 40GbE in a compact 2RU system with low latency and power per port of under 5W per port.
  • 7260CX-64 - delivers a new standard for 100GbE port density within a fixed form factor chassis offering 64 line rate 100GbE interfaces in 2RU.

Significant, Arista said pricing for the 7060X and 7260X start at under $1000 per 100GbE port.

Arista also announced availability of new optics at both 40G and 100G including an industry compatible 40GbE BiDi transceiver that operates over multi-mode fiber and a choice of cost effective solutions for 100GbE connections for server to leaf and leaf to spine connections including Active Optical Cables, 100GBASE-SR4 and 25GbE breakout cables.

Broadcom Debuts Cloud-optimized 25/50G Ethernet Controllers

Broadcom has begun sampling its new NetXtreme C-Series 10G/25G/40G/50G Ethernet controller product family designed for supporting greater virtual machine density in cloud data centers.

The BCM57300 NetXtreme C-Series Ethernet controllers offer bidirectional 50G throughput with 30 Mpps performance and integrated flow processing capabilities from the server to the top-of-rack switch They complete Broadcom's end-to-end 25/50G data center solution, which also includes the newly introduced StrataXGS Tomahawk Ethernet switch

Broadcom said its integrated "TruFlow" flow processing can double network throughput and provide up to a 50 percent increase in application performance compared to a software-only solution. The BCM57300 provides hardware-based, congestion notification responses that are 5,000x faster than traditional software-based approaches. When combined with StrataXGS switches, the notification enable data centers to avoid network congestion before it happens.

Key features of Broadcom's NetXtreme C-Series Controllers:

  • vSwitch Acceleration: TruFlow moves virtual switching functionality from the host CPU into the Broadcom C-Series Controller, increasing available CPU cycles for application processing
  • Flow Scalability: TruFlow distributes flow processing into the server endpoints
  • Software Defined Networking:  TruFlow implements the fundamental SDN protocol constructs of classification/match/action processing in hardware, including the latest OpenFlow standard. Distributing SDN protocols into the BCM57300 enables cloud operators to reap the benefits of SDN in their data centers with a flexible, scalable and dynamic network.

"Pushing the 25/50G Ethernet specification, which Broadcom defined and co-founded as an industry standard, to the server endpoint solidifies Broadcom's end-to-end offering."

Broadcom will be supplyting offers two families of standard adapter cards based on its BCM57300 NetXtreme C-Series of Ethernet controllers: PCIe NIC and OCP Mezzanine.

In April 2015, Broadcom began sampling the next-generation of its StrataXGS Trident Ethernet switching silicon, which has been optimized to meet the bandwidth, scalability and efficiency demands of 10GbE virtualized data centers.  The new silicon offers 1.28 terabit per second (Tbps) switching performance, 30 percent lower power and double the performance for data center virtualization overlays, such as VXLAN.

The 28 nanometer (nm) Trident-II+ Series, which provides a drop-in power and efficiency improvement over the previous version, brings a number of features for network virtualization, including single-pass VXLAN routing that doubles gateway performance in all network topologies, as well as support for pre-standard GENEVE overlays.

As a complement to Broadcom's latest StrataXGS Tomahawk and StrataDNX switch SoCs, the Trident II+ Series provides 100GbE connections to the spine layer and between racks, while supporting 10GbE connections to the servers in enterprise and private cloud deployments.

In September 2014, Broadcom introduced its next-generation, StrataXGS "Tomahawk" switch, packing 2 Tbps of switching performance in a single chip that is capable of supporting 32 ports of 100 Gigabit Ethernet, 64 ports of 40GE/50GE or 128 ports of 25GE.

The new chip, which represents the 7th generation of Broadcom Ethernet switching silicon, is designed for the programmable fabrics needed in next-gen, cloud-scale data centers. 

The StrataXGS Tomahawk Series is powered by more than 7 billion integrated transistors in 28nm. It supports new 25GE and 50GE protocol standards, and is the first chip to scale to 32-ports of 100G on a single device.

Significantly, Tomahawk implements Broadcom's FLEXGS and Smart-Flow technology, enabling the switch to be software configured for specific policies while preserving deterministic latency. The new design brings a 12X increase in application policy scale compared to previous generation switches, along with increased flexibility of packet lookups and key generation, and rich load balancing and traffic redirection controls. This supports an extensive suite of user configurable functions for flow processing, security, network virtualization, measurement/monitoring, congestion management and traffic engineering.

In May 015, Avago Technologies agreed to acquire Broadcom for $17 billion in cash consideration and the economic equivalent of approximately 140 million Avago ordinary shares. -- an implied value for the total transaction of $37 billion.  The merger will create the third largest global semiconductor company with strong presence in wired infrastructure, wireless infrastructure, enterprise storage, ASICs, PHYs, Ethernet switching silicon and set-top box silicon.  It will have combined annual revenues of approximately $15 billion and $77 billion in enterprise value.

Crehan: Multiple Technologies Drive Stronger Server Networking Upgrade Cycle

The availability of multiple new data-center Ethernet speeds will lead to a much stronger server networking upgrade cycle than seen over the past decade, according to a new Server-Class Adapter & LAN-on-Motherboard (LOM) Long-Range Forecast Report from Crehan Research.

The firm expects that the impending arrival of 25 gigabit Ethernet (GbE), 50GbE and 100GbE products, in combination with existing 10GbE and 40GbE products, will result in more than two-thirds of total networking ports migrating to high-speed Ethernet within three years (see accompanying figure).

“Over the past decade or so, the data center has seen many significant changes, and it is no longer a one-size-fits-all market,” said Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research. “Consequently, we are seeing solutions that are highly optimized for the needs of specific customer segments, whether it be a fully vertically integrated system for a converged enterprise network or a bare-bones disaggregated system for a massively scalable cloud service provider,” he said. “As a result, the market is currently looking for more targeted Ethernet networking solutions.”

The report predicts that the many various high-speed Ethernet options will coexist for some time, each benefitting from the demands of a specific market segment. For example:
  • 25GbE is expected to see a strong initial ramp from deployments by cloud titans such as Google and Microsoft, an area of the market where 10GbE server networking is currently prevalent. 
  • 10GbE should see its third, and biggest, adoption phase as the mainstream enterprise market upgrades its mostly 1GBASE-T server and server access infrastructure to 10GBASE-T.
  • 40GbE is starting to ramp significantly, benefitting from a current window of opportunity as the most attractively priced data center Ethernet speed from a bandwidth perspective. 

In both its 3Q14 Server-Class Adapter & LAN-on-Motherboard (LOM) Long-Range Forecast and its 3Q14 Data Center Switch reports, Crehan Research highlighted the dramatic uptake in 40GbE data center adoption, noting that networking bandwidth demands were so strong in some market verticals that these customers could not wait to evaluate impending 25GbE and 50GbE options.

Xilinx Announces 25G Ethernet IP for FPGAs

Xilinx announced low latency 25G Ethernet IP for FPGAs aimed at data center switching.

The low latency 25G Ethernet MAC and PCS LogiCORE IP solution supports the new 25G Ethernet Consortium specification and will be aligned with the industry's continuing advancements in next-generation processors, which are doubling their performance for tomorrow's data center servers.

Xilinx is demonstrating the 25G Ethernet MAC and PCS LogiCORE IP solution at this week's Supercomputing in New Orleans. The live demonstration utilizes two Virtex UltraScale VCU107 boards communicating over four channels of 25G Ethernet through 5 meters of direct attached copper cable and two QSFP+ modules.

IEEE Forms 25G Ethernet Study Group

A new IEEE 802.3 25 Gbps Ethernet Study Group has been formed to explore the market opportunities and needs for a single-lane 25 Gbps speed for server interconnects for Ethernet.

The reuse of serial lane 25 Gbps signaling technology, which was developed to support 100 Gbps Ethernet, enables cost optimized deployments in newly constructed data centers.

“The application of single-lane 25 Gbps signaling technologies provides Ethernet with a solution set that can be reused by those companies building the data centers of tomorrow. The new study group expects to lay the groundwork for a new Media Access Control (MAC) rate that will enable cost-optimized single-lane solutions that will increase network deployment efficiency,” said Mark Nowell, chair of the IEEE 802.3 25 Gbps Ethernet Study Group and senior director, Cisco Systems. “The heavy lifting in developing and standardizing 25 Gb/s signaling technologies has been done as part of the development of 100 Gbps Ethernet. These technologies can be reused to enable a single-lane 25 Gbps Ethernet solution set for server interconnects for these future data centers.”

Coming Soon -- 25 and 50 Gigabit Ethernet

A new industry consortium, including Arista Networks, Broadcom, Google, Mellanox Technologies, and Microsoft, announced the availability of a specification optimized to allow data center networks to run over a 25 or 50 Gigabit per second (Gbps) Ethernet link protocol. The specification prescribes a single-lane 25 Gbps Ethernet and dual-lane 50 Gbps Ethernet link protocol, enabling up to 2.5X higher performance per physical lane or twinax copper wire between the rack endpoint and switch compared to current 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps Ethernet links. The new specification is being made available royalty-free by the Consortium members to any data center ecosystem vendor or consumer who joins the Consortium.

The 25 Gigabit Ethernet Consortium said its mission is to support an industry-standard, interoperable Ethernet specification that boosts the performance and slashes the interconnect cost per Gbps between the server Network Interface Controller (NIC) and Top-of-Rack (ToR) switch. The new specification covers 25 Gbps and 50 Gbps Ethernet physical layer (PHY) and media access control layer (MAC) behavior, including virtual lane alignment, autonegotiation, and forward error correction characteristics.

“We believe that 25 and 50 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) serves a focused market requirement for next-generation, performance and cost optimized server- and storage-to-switch interconnects and are proud to be a key contributor to the Consortium’s 25 and 50 GbE specification," stated Rochan Sankar, Product Marketing Director, Infrastructure and Networking Group, Broadcom.

“The companies joining the 25 Gigabit Ethernet Consortium are taking a major step forward in increasing the performance of data center networks,” said Anshul Sadana, Senior Vice President, Customer Engineering, Arista Networks. “With ever-increasing server performance and with the uplinks from the leaf to the spine layer migrating to 100 Gbps in the near future, it makes sense to increase the access speed from 10 Gbps to 25 and 50 Gbps.”
